5
It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.
6
What is happiness?
7
Are you happy?
8
What makes you happy?
9
For thousands of years, people all over the world have discussed these questions,
10
and expressed different opinions.
11
We begin today's program with some of their thoughts.
12
Aristotle was a great thinker who lived in Greece over 2,000 years ago.
13
He said, "'Happiness depends on ourselves.'" Thucydides also lived in Greece at about the same time.
14
He was a military man who studied history.
15
He said, "'The secret of happiness is freedom.
16
And the secret of freedom is courage." William Gladstone was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the 19th century.
17
He said, Be happy with what you have and are.
18
Be open-handed with both and you will not have to hunt for happiness."
19
Charles Spurgeon also lived in the United Kingdom at about the same time.
20
He was a religious speaker.
21
And he said, It is not how much we have,
22
but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.
23
Today's Spotlight is on happiness.
24
People all around the world think that happiness is important.
25
In 2012, the United Nations even passed a resolution about happiness.
26
All 193 member states agreed to the resolution.
27
They recognized happiness as a global human goal.
28
And they decided to make the 20th of March the International Day of Happiness.
29
On the 20th of March, 2015, the Secretary General of the United Nations,
30
Ban Ki-moon, wrote a special message.
31
In it, he said, I wish everyone around the world a very happy International Day of Happiness.
32
The search for happiness is a serious business.
33
Happiness for the whole human family is one of the main goals of the United Nations.
34
Peace, plenty, lives of respect for all, this is what we seek.
35
We want all men, women and children to enjoy all their human rights.
36
We want all countries to know the joy of peace.
37
We want both people and planet to be blessed with lasting development,
38
and to be free of the terrible effects of climate change.
39
Let us give thanks for what makes us happy.
40
And let us give our efforts to filling our world with happiness.
41
But what makes people happy?
42
Many people think that happiness depends on being rich and beautiful.
43
But scientists and experts have studied happiness.
44
They know this is not correct.
45
Good and bad things happen to everyone.
46
Many scientists and experts believe that happiness is something we can choose.
47
They believe that happiness is not always about what happens to you.
48
They believe that much happiness is about how you choose to react.
49
You can choose to react to events in your life in a positive way.
50
Dr. Amit Sood is an expert at the Mayo Clinic in the United States.
51
He said, Happiness is a habit or custom.
52
Some of us are born happy, but most others have to choose it.
53
We often, however, do not understand we have that choice.
54
We also do not know how to exercise that choice.
55
As a result, we push happiness away.
56
Do not let that happen to you.
57
So, how can we choose to be happy?
58
What do we need to do?
59
Experts have a lot of different advice.
60
But they agree that gratitude, or being thankful, is very important.
61
You will learn to be happy, or happier, by being thankful.
62
Dr. Robert Emmons is a leading expert on gratitude.
63
He suggests many ways to become more thankful.
64
One method he suggests is keeping a gratitude journal or book.
65
Every day, write down things for which you are thankful.
66
These things may be about you, events, or people.
67
He also suggests that you use the language of thankful people.
68
You can use words like gifts, givers, blessings, and blessed.
69
What things are people most grateful for?
70
Bupa is a health organization in the United Kingdom.
71
Bupa did some research about the things that make people feel happy.
72

74
Another example, many people enjoy feeling the sun on their faces.
75
Other people feel good when someone is kind to them.

Kontext & Hintergrund
