27
Alright, let's get started.
28
Are your ears ready?
29
You know what time it is.
30
It's listening time.
31
Okay, let's talk about Christmas in the U.S.
32
First of all, I want to mention
33
that Christmas is usually considered by most people to be the most important holiday in the U.S.
34
I already mentioned this in the episode about Thanksgiving, but I want to repeat it here today.
35
Thanksgiving is not the most important holiday in the US,
36
but for some reason a lot of people from other countries think this.
37
They think that Thanksgiving is the most important holiday here,
38
but most people would consider Christmas to be the most important holiday.
39
So there are a lot of reasons for this.
40
Of course, at the heart of Christmas is the religious aspect of the holiday,
41
the reason why Christmas exists, right?
42
It's to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, right?
43
So Christians in the U.S will really value Christmas because it's the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior, right?
44
There's a huge reason to celebrate if you're a Christian.
45
But even if you're not religious,
46
this holiday is probably still the most important one throughout the year because it's become a holiday that most people
47
celebrate whether or not they regard the religious aspect of it.
48
So it's still big just in society beyond just the religious population.
49
So there is the religious significance, the reason for the holiday, obviously.
50
However, it's also a really big holiday for other people and for other reasons as well.
51
And we have a whole season around Christmas.
52
There's the Christmas season.
53
So the whole month of December is special in the U.S.
54
This month feels different.
55
It looks different.
56
It sounds different.
57
You can tell that it's the Christmas season anytime in December.
58
and I'll talk a little more about that in just a minute.
59
But yeah, we have a whole season around Christmas.
60
That's how significant this holiday is.
61
And of course, it's a really big family holiday.
62
Usually, this is a day when you get together with your family
63
and you eat together and you have this time as a family.
64
Like Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving also has that aspect as well. But Christmas does too.
65
And for me, Christmas has more of that.
66
It's on another level.
67
So Christmas is really significant for its family aspect as well.
68
And we have a Christmas culture, I would call it.
69
In the US, we have a whole culture that is related to this holiday.
70
there are a lot of things that are specific to Christmas that suddenly appear around this time of year.
71
And a lot of things become different and people do different things.
72
They even act differently sometimes around this season.
73
So there's a whole separate culture when it comes to Christmas.
74
So let me talk a little bit about that.
75
So during the Christmas season, what happens?
76
Well, first of all, let me talk about when this season is.
77
So I think that technically the Christmas season starts right after Thanksgiving.
78
For some people, the Christmas season starts even earlier.
79
They already get in the Christmas spirit earlier on in the year.
80
However, I think that for most people, after Thanksgiving, it's Christmas time.
81
It's the Christmas season.
82
So this starts at the end of November, of course, and then it continues on through December.
83
So we have multiple weeks.
84
We have a full month where everything feels like Christmas.
85
The season is in full swing.
86
In English, when we say that something is in full swing,
87
we're saying that you are now in this period.
88
You are in this season.
89
It is happening now completely.
90
So by the time December comes,
91
the Christmas season is in full swing and you start to see this Christmas culture all around you.
92
So there is the visual aspect of this Christmas season.
93
So of course, the decorations are a big part of this.
94
And Christmas decorations usually come up after Thanksgiving,
95
and they're taken down in January, usually at the beginning of January.
96
That's usually when you'll see these decorations.
97
However, sometimes you'll see them even earlier than that,
98
and you'll see them stay up even later than the beginning of January.
99
But usually most people have their decorations up throughout the month of December,
100
throughout that whole month.
101
And we have some special areas throughout our cities where we have really,
102
really cool Christmas decorations and Christmas lights.
103
So if you visit the U.S during the month of December and you're in a big city,
104
there will probably be multiple neighborhoods where the whole neighborhood has really incredible Christmas decorations.
105
and each neighborhood that does this has a different nickname, a name for itself.
106
So the name might be Candy Cane Lane or Starlight Circle
107
or something like that
108
and people will go from different parts of the city to see this neighborhood
109
and see all of the decorations and the lights there.
110
This is a really cool tradition that we have in the U.S during the month of December.
111
I'm excited to take my family to see some of these neighborhoods this season.
112
And they sometimes sell things in these neighborhoods at night when a lot of people are walking through the neighborhood.
113
They might sell hot chocolate or cookies or other snacks.
114
It's a whole experience when you do this.
115
So that's a really cool thing.
116
And there's also the audio aspect of the Christmas season.
117
I talked about the visual aspect,
118
but there's also the audio aspect because there is Christmas music everywhere.
119
Everywhere you turn, you hear Christmas music.
120
By the way, when we say everywhere you turn, we just mean everywhere you go,
121
everywhere you look, everywhere around you.
122
So everywhere you turn, there's Christmas music playing.
123
When you walk into a store, if they have music at that store, chances are it's Christmas music.
124
And we have a whole genre of music here called Christmas music.
125
Musical artists release Christmas albums specifically for this season.
126
So there is a whole genre dedicated to Christmas music.
127
So that's something that you'll hear everywhere.
128
Everywhere you go, you hear Christmas music.
129
So it sounds like Christmas during this month.
130
And people watch Christmas movies.
131
This is a genre of movies here in the U.S.
132
We have Christmas movies.
133
There are tons and tons of Christmas movies.
134
And some families have the tradition of watching the same Christmas movie or the same Christmas movies every year.
135
And they've already seen those movies 20 times,
136
but they continue to watch them every year because it's the tradition during the Christmas season.
137
My sister does this, I think.
138
She watches a lot of Christmas movies and re-watches them every year.
139
I don't really do this, but when I was a kid,
140
there were a couple Christmas movies that I really liked and I watched them year after year.
141
So I participated in that a little bit when I was younger.
142
And there are Christmas cards that you see in people's houses.
143
A Christmas card is a card that you make by taking a picture,
144
oftentimes with a professional photographer,
145
not always, but sometimes, you take a picture during this season with you and your family,
146
And then you create these Christmas cards and you send these Christmas cards to your friends and your family members.
147
And some people write something on these Christmas cards.
148
Some people write things about what each person in their family has done this year.
149
they give you an update on the life of the different family members some people do
150
that with these cards but other people just put the names of each person on the card
151
or maybe they just put the last name of the family but the picture is the most important part and people
152
will put these Christmas cards on their refrigerator.
153
They'll use a magnet to stick these cards from different people on their refrigerator or somewhere else in the house sometimes.
154
And so you can see the pictures of all their different friends and family members there on the fridge.
155
So that's something that's really big here in the U.S., but I don't think that's a big thing in other countries.
156
But that's another thing that happens during the Christmas season.
157
And of course, there's the food.
158
I haven't mentioned that, but the food during the Christmas season is very particular to Christmas.
159
So there are a lot of different types of foods that we only eat during Christmas or during Thanksgiving,
160
and there are a lot of flavors that change during this season.
161
So certain foods or drinks will have holiday flavors,
162
Christmas flavors, during November and December.
163
You'll see a lot of flavors that incorporate certain fruits or other things that are related to this season.
164
And there are certain drinks, especially, that are like holiday drinks, like eggnog, for example.
165
That's something that you buy during the Christmas season, but not at any other time during the year.
166
So that aspect, the food and the drinks,
167
that changes and that becomes Christmassy during this time.
168
And one other thing that also changes is there's something that we might call Christmas cheer.
169
So cheer refers to happiness,
170
being bright and hopeful and happy and smiley.
171
This is cheer.
172
So during this season, people might seem a little bit more cheerful in public.
173
People will greet you or they will say goodbye to you with a Merry Christmas or something like that.
174
And you can sometimes feel like people have this cheer and are a little bit nicer during this time of year.
175
And so that's a good thing as well.
176
That's something nice regarding the Christmas season.
177
So as you can see, during the Christmas season, you feel Christmas everywhere.
178
You feel it all around you, right?
179
And talking specifically about the days, December 24th and December 25th,
180
I also wanted to mention that in the U.S., Christmas is December 25th.
181
Christmas Eve is what we call December 24th.
182
However, Christmas Day, December 25th, this is the day.
183
This is the most important day.
184
The 24th is also very important.
185
However, Christmas is December 25th.
186
In other countries, December 24th is the important day, and then the 25th isn't quite that important.
187
However, in the U.S., it's not like this.
188
People don't usually stay up all night on December 24th
189
and have this big party into the early hours of the morning and then go to bed really, really late.
190
That's not the traditional custom in the U.S.
191
Some people might do that, but that's not what's most common, I think.
192
Most people really enjoy Christmas Eve and many people celebrate on that day.
193
However, they probably go to bed at a normal time and kids usually go to bed fairly early.
194
And then people wake up early on Christmas morning on December 25th.
195
Kids especially love waking up really early on Christmas Day and going to open their presents.
196
That's a really big tradition in the U.S.
197
So December 24th and December 25th are both really important.
198
However, the 25th is Christmas.
199
That is the day.
200
That's Christmas for us.
201
So I also just wanted to mention that.
202
And one other thing I wanted to mention is the weather.
203
So if you live in a place in the U.S that has four seasons, that has a real winter,
204
people often hope for a white Christmas.
205
When we say a white Christmas, we're talking about a Christmas when it snows.
206
There's snow on the ground and it's white.
207
So people really like this in the US because the snow makes it feel like Christmas.
208
I don't live in a city where it snows, so this doesn't exist here.
209
But in other places, this is something that people really like.
210
And Christmas feels like a holiday where you're supposed to be inside,
211
warm with your family, oftentimes with a fire in the fireplace.
212
The fireplace is the part of your house where you can light a fire
213
and then the smoke goes up through the chimney.
214
And in the U.S., many people live in houses versus apartments.
215
Of course, a lot of people live in apartments too,
216
but here many, many people live in houses more than people in a lot of other countries.
217
So here it's common to have a fireplace and you can light a fire and feel warm and cozy
218
by the fire with your family, drinking a warm drink like hot chocolate or something,
219
and enjoy that atmosphere, that nice environment, and see the snow outside.
220
People really love that in the U.S.
221
Again, I don't have that because I live in Southern California,
222
but that's kind of the romantic image of Christmas that a lot of people have.
223
So that's Christmas in the U.S.
224
There are many other things that I didn't mention
225
but I wanted to give you a feel for this season and the Christmas culture that we have and I love Christmas.
226
It's my favorite holiday.
227
And for me, it's the only thing I like about the winter season because I don't like the winter.
228
It's too cold for me.
229
The days are too short.
230
I like the sun.
231
I like being outside.
232
I like the warm weather.
233
So Christmas is the only thing that I really look forward to in the winter.
234
It's okay if it's a little bit colder and darker because we have all the decorations and lights and the Christmas atmosphere.
235
However, when Christmas is over, then I want it to be spring or summer again.
236
But I love Christmas and I'm looking forward to Christmas this year.
237
Okay, that's it for today.
238
