1
I'm currently standing in the loneliest town in America.
2
I'm in the middle of Alaska, hundreds of miles away from the nearest city, and there is pretty much nothing out here.
3
The town is called Chicken Alaska.
4
It's an old gold mining town cut off from the rest of the world.
5
No cell towers, no grocery stores, no main electricity.
6
And I'm spending 24 hours here.
7
But that's the fun part.
8
The real challenge was getting here.
9
It says rerouting right now.
10
Let me explain.
11
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Denali, Alaska.
12
Whoa.
13
We've traveled a long way to get to this point.
14
It all started in Seattle, where my little brother and I embarked on one of the loneliest cruises in America.
15
The cruise took us through remote waters from Seattle all the way up to Juneau, Alaska, where we boarded a flight to the final city of Anchorage.
16
From there, we hopped in our rental car and started the drive into the isolated wilderness of Denali.
17
After surviving a night in the wild and seeing some crazy wildlife,
18
it's now time for us to begin the final stage of our journey of reaching the loneliest town in America.
19
Let's drive.
20
So we reserved our base camp.
21
They sent us a confirmation email telling us a little bit about what it's gonna be like.
22
This is what it says.
23
Welcome to our unique area of Alaska.
24
Chicken is completely off-grid.
25
There are no public services available.
26
No groceries, propane, telephone, internet, cell towers, electricity, water, trash, or sewer within a hundred mile radius.
27
Good luck.
28
I'm just kidding, I added that last part.
29
They didn't say good luck.
30
And so began our final stretch of the journey, a seven hour drive across beautiful Alaska to reach the lonely town of Chicken.
31
I pulled off because there was a sign that said there's a scenic view over here, but.
32
I don't know if this was it.
33
I think it's more that way.
34
Okay, we've been driving for a few hours at this point, but there's two things I really want to see along the way, and the first we're coming up on, which is the literal North Pole.
35
Yup, we're officially so far north that we've reached the legal town of the North Pole.
36
All right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the North Pole.
37
Dude, that wasn't even rehearsed, bro.
38
We got chemistry.
39
We're finishing each other's sandwiches.
40
Yay!
41
I'm looking at a road that says St. Nicholas Drive, which is kind of crazy.
42
I guess we've literally made it so far north into Alaska that this town is literally called the North Pole.
43
What does it smell like?
44
What are the vibes?
45
It smells like concentrated cigarettes.
46
And Santa looks a little unique here, but...
47
Oh my goodness.
48
Fun part about the town is that all the lamp posts and light posts and sign posts are designed like candy canes, which is cool.
49
And I guess Santa Claus house here is where Santa Claus lives.
50
We went in there, it's pretty cool.
51
There's souvenirs and all the like.
52
Unfortunately, as much as we love Santa, we gotta get to the loneliest town.
53
So this was stop number one.
54
Super fun.
55
Let's keep going.
56
We still got like what five hours of drive or something?
57
Yeah.
58
Alright, let's see.
59
This is the loneliest series and if you know me, you know I love a good gas station.
60
So I figured if both of those things are true, I gotta find the loneliest gas station and my friends, I think I found it.
61
Unfortunately guys, it looks like it's closed.
62
On maps that said it might be open.
63
You guys getting chills?
64
Wow.
65
Nothing like a good gas station.
66
Alright, uh, I think I've seen all I need to see.
67
Let's get back on the road.
68
Chicken, I'm coming for you.
69
We're about two and a half hours away and we've already seen our first sign for the Canada border.
70
Might have to go get some maple syrup.
71
And after a few more hours of driving, we reached the final stretch.
72
Guys, look.
73
This is officially the first sign we have seen for chicken.
74
We're 66 miles away.
75
Map shows were like an hour and 19 minutes.
76
And we are literally out here.
77
Dude, how are you feeling?
78
Good, I'm ready to get there bro.
79
I really hope that there is like a restaurant or something open when we get there.
80
But dude, this is it!
81
We're getting closer!
82
Woo!
83
The road we're on is not just a regular highway.
84
It's 66 miles of bumps, dirt, and gravel that completely cuts you off from the rest of the world.
85
Once you turn on this road, you are officially in the wild.
86
Oh look, look, look, look, look, look, look.
87
all have a good night we're heading to chicken all right
88
guys we have been driving on this road for over an
89
hour now we have not seen a single other car
90
or a single other soul on this road we have a zero cell service uh
91
and our map is stuck on rerouting right now the roads
92
are starting to get very bumpy as well not only have
93
we not seen like any other cars we have not seen a single other structure.
94
Not a single gas station, not a single truck stop.
95
Literally nothing.
96
It's all just forest as far as the eye can see.
97
I do need to go to the bathroom here soon.
98
All right, I'll check back in when hopefully we pull up to Chicken.
99
this right here all the road is kind of like that we got 13 miles of dirt roads
100
says we're two miles away we're getting closer guys whoa guys I think we made it.
101
Look at this.
102
Oh, look at this. So cute.
103
Bro, we made it.
104
How do you feel right now?
105
I'm stoked.
106
Guys, after hundreds of miles traveled, cruise, ship, spending the night in the wild, we have made it to Chicken, Alaska.
107
This is crazy.
108
While we're here, I want to explore everything this place has to offer to the restaurants, the hotels, the environment, the people.
109
I want to see it all.
110
It's like 10 p.m right now, so the first thing is first.
111
We've got to go find our hotel and get ready probably for bed.
112
And by hotel, I mean, well, you'll see.
113
And then tomorrow morning, we can check out more of the town, but let's get in here.
114
This is where we're gonna be staying for the night.
115
To get the full picture of this town, I'm gonna be looking into the hotel, the food, the people, and lastly, I want to learn about the gold that has so much history here.
116
At this point, it was like 10.30 p.m., but this is where the email told us to come and check in.
117
Guys, where am I?
118
It is so quiet.
119
Chicken is up there.
120
Well, guys, I guess everyone in this town is asleep.
121
It is pretty late, but in case you've ever wondered what the loneliest town in America's hotel looks like, I'm calling it a hotel.
122
It's going to make people mad, but I'm going to go try to find my cabin.
123
I think I can just pick one.
124
It says they have espresso here, so this might be a good place to come and get some coffee in the morning.
125
We just got to find where our cabin is.
126
showers there.
127
There's nobody here right now.
128
Crazy.
129
I think this might be my cabin.
130
Let's see.
131
Oh, sweet.
132
Okay.
133
So the key was just sitting here on the table.
134
So now I have to put my information on this and put this with money in the drop box over there.
135
And then this is officially my room.
136
Nice place.
137
And there's beds.
138
We didn't know if there was gonna be beds or not.
139
We knew such little information about this.
140
When some people go on vacation, they stay at the Marriott, the Hilton, the Four Seasons, all great hotels.
141
But I bet they've never stayed at a hotel like this.
142
Tomio, that's not a hotel, that's a campsite.
143
Give me this, I've been driving all day, alright?
144
This room is cozy.
145
Look, I've stayed at some lonely hotels in my day.
146
But this might just be one of the loneliest cabins I've ever stayed in.
147
Chicken has some charm, what can I say?
148
This cabin is called Steel Creek and you walk in and first thing you notice is how big this room is.
149
It's pretty cold outside right now, it's like 30s, high 30s Fahrenheit,
150
but in here it's honestly pretty warm and there's a nice space heater on the wall as well which made me excited.
151
I didn't know if we were gonna have power here, turns out we do have power and plugs so that that we can plug our stuff in and charge it.
152
Right when you walk in you notice a nice little lamp, a mini fridge to store your food in that we don't have.
153
There's some nice art on the wall including a saw that's a little bit questionable but not to worry right?
154
And then you have not one bed, not two bed, but three bed.
155
Very excited about that.
156
A nice little mirror
157
and you have a table in the middle where they've left
158
us what appear to be grocery bags with towels in them in case we decide we want to take a shower.
159
And perhaps my favorite part about this room is the view
160
because from my door I can lay eyes on the big chicken the icon of this town an old structure
161
that I believe has something to do with gold hopefully I'll learn about
162
that tomorrow as well this is just one section of the town there's more to see tomorrow
163
so despite it being very bright outside it's 10 30 p.m right now
164
so I want to snuggle down and get some rest see you in the morning.
165
If there's one thing that I've realized going to all these lonely places
166
so far is that I'm really really thankful to have my brother with me.
167
And I just know tomorrow we're gonna find some cool stuff around here.
168
Well hasn't this been quite the adventure so far?
169
And you know what else is an adventure?
170
One of my new favorite things ever.
171
And it's from today's sponsor, Cometeer.
172
This is a coffee like you've never seen it before.
173
What makes Cometeer different is that the coffee is sourced from world-class roasters like Counter Culture, Onyx, and Intelligentsia.
174
Then, brewed to perfection and flash frozen to lock in peak flavor.
175
It's peak.
176
No machine, no guesswork, you just melt it.
177
For hot coffee, just pop this frozen puck in the mug using the eject button, add hot water, and watch it go.
178
For an iced latte, thaw the capsule overnight, add milk and ice first, drizzle the coffee over the top, and you get this incredible inky cloud effect.
179
Iced coffee, same thing, just water and ice.
180
It tastes so good and you cannot mess it up.
181
Trust me, I'm speaking from experience.
182
Cometeer ships frozen on dry ice in recyclable aluminum capsules.
183
Straight to your door.
184
This is their new world mug collection.
185
Inside this box is 32 cups of coffee from 16 different countries and roasters.
186
They're all paired head to head
187
and you can rate each matchup in the Cometeer app or this little passport to figure out which origins you like best.
188
My winner from the box was the Ethiopian light roast.
189
We can't get enough.
190
My wife even stopped going to Starbucks.
191
Thanks again to Cometeer for making this video possible, and be sure to try it for yourself, and get $20 off your first order at Cometeer.com backslash TonyO20.
192
The link is in the description as well.
193
Good morning, everybody.
194
Let's go explore this town, shall we?
195
Before we start our day though, it's shower time, which was in this cool building.
196
We needed to exchange our dollar bills for quarters, because that's how the showers ran.
197
Time for this rooster to take a shower.
198
Sorry.
199
We're gonna use these quarters to pay for the showers behind us, but this is the part where, uh, my camera, we turn the camera off.
200
When we made it back to our cabin, we met a friend named Mike who started giving us some info about this place.
201
Yeah, this place, they named it chicken because they couldn't spell ptarmigan.
202
I looked it up looked it up, ptarmigan is the Alaskan state bird.
203
No shade on the people of chicken.
204
I couldn't spell this either.
205
Are you serious?
206
No way.
207
No way.
208
And this is where the gold rush started 100 years ago.
209
This thing.
210
That was eating gold.
211
So these buckets hook to this thing.
212
It just goes, and it pushes it all the way through and spits out the rock and keeps the gold in.
213
Well Mike, great to meet you.
214
I'm sure we'll see you around.
215
If you see Joseph, go say hi to her.
216
Okay.
217
Mike was a chill guy and he told us we needed to go try coffee from the coffee shop.
218
The cafe is open.
219
It's time to go get some coffee hopefully.
220
Morning.
221
How are you?
222
Yeah, I'm Antonio.
223
Great to meet you.
224
Would I be able to order a coffee?
225
A coffee I can do.
226
I have a full-time service cookie.
227
I'll do a hot latte, please.
228
This little trading post had all sorts of awesome stuff, and then Lou showed us a picture of something they spotted on the same road Carlos and I were on yesterday.
229
He actually charged at the truck.
230
No way.
231
So he was aggressive?
232
Yes.
233
Oh my goodness.
234
I'm glad we didn't run into that.
235
And then she showed us this old book with the history of chicken.
236
And how long have you lived here?
237
47 years.
238
Wow.
239
We found out that that chicken outside was actually built by some school students and transported here by trailer.
240
Who founded chicken?
241
Miners from back in the 1800s.
242
They came here for gold.
243
So it's been around that long?
244
Yes.
245
Lou was super sweet and made us a great cup coffee
246
but we had more to see all right we're repping the
247
chicken merch now baby what you got got myself a little
248
chicken alaska gold camp jacket i got the vest let's go
249
also got some coffees what's crazy is you could be anywhere in the world
250
and there is tap to pay yeah there is crazy internet via starlink not expecting
251
that and there's lattes
252
so they're working it out here lou is super sweet we got some more of this town to explore
253
so let's keep going we then headed to the town's main street
254
because we still needed to try some food and learn more about the gold around here.
255
Maybe even try to find some.
256
That was some subtle foreshadowing.
257
Luckily there was a restaurant called the Chicken Creek Cafe that was open.
258
Knock knock.
259
I don't really know why I said that when I walked in.
260
Hey are you guys open?
261
Uh, barely.
262
That's totally fine.
263
Are we okay to come in?
264
Yeah, I know.
265
Okay, sweet.
266
How about breakfast sandwiches?
267
Down for breakfast sandwiches, bro.
268
That sounds incredible.
269
What was your name?
270
Max.
271
Max.
272
Antonio, great to meet you.
273
Antonio and Carlos.
274
I'll take free coffee.
275
Oh yeah, I'll take coffee.
276
Absolutely.
277
Max had also just made fresh baked cookies and they were just sitting on the counter.
278
And of course it would be rude if I didn't get one.
279
So I got one and I ate it and it was incredible.
280
Oh wow.
281
While Matt makes us these delicious breakfast sandwiches, Let me catch you up on a goal I have.
282
See, I have a dream of hitting 1 million subscribers, and since you all are always telling me that I look old, I made a deal with you.
283
That if I hit 700,000 subscribers during the series, I'd shave the mustache.
284
Well, you guys destroyed that goal, and my wife shaved my mustache on livestream, and this is how I look now, like a baby.
285
Now, this is technically the last episode of the series, but I've decided to extend the subscriber incentive to the end of this month.
286
Our next goal is 800K, where you guys will decide what color I dye my hair.
287
You have till July 1st. My fate is in your hands.
288
And a pack of those of the cigarettes.
289
Great sandwich, Max.
290
Thank you.
291
And that's when we met the boys, Bill and Jim.
292
We didn't know it then.
293
These guys were going to play a big part in our story of Chicken Alaska.
294
We found out they were local gold miners and hung out with them for a little bit.
295
I'll be blessed.
296
See you.
297
Thanks again, Max.
298
But as much as we wanted to stay, we still wanted to check out some of the other buildings on Main Street Like the Chicken Creek Saloon
299
that it seemed a little too early for anybody to be hanging out in yet.
300
Oh, it's cool.
301
I guess this is the saloon here.
302
These are all hats.
303
Oh, there's probably like thousands.
304
This is insane.
305
I don't really even have words.
306
This is crazy.
307
That's all I can say.
308
And after leaving the saloon, we came outside to find the boys waiting on us with an offer.
309
These guys were so kind.
310
They invited us to where they live and where they mine for gold.
311
Alright, before we head out, a chicken, we met some friends.
312
They're taking us, I guess, to their camp?
313
I'm not sure where they're taking us.
314
But, uh, we're going.
315
Now I know what you're thinking, Tonio, you're following two complete strangers in one of the most
316
remote towns in America to their camp where you don't even know where it is and you're completely just trusting them?
317
Yes.
318
And just like that, we had arrived at their base camp where they live.
319
That's awesome. So cool.
320
So, by my bus, is a fully self-contained converted school bus.
321
Oh, sweet.
322
It's got 900 gallons.
323
That's awesome French fry oil.
324
No way.
325
So you convert French fry oil into power?
326
Yep.
327
Oh cool.
328
I just go from Georgia to here.
329
Solar power, battery, or Starlink.
330
You turn on the core.
331
Starlink plugs into this, and this all runs off the solar.
332
Oh nice.
333
Literally a furnace.
334
This is the spot.
335
Messy man camp.
336
Got a shower in here.
337
This thing holds 900 gallons of fuel so I can use it for a fuel storage.
338
No way.
339
It'll go from here to Georgia on a fuel tank of french fry oil.
340
So it drives.
341
Oh yeah, it drives.
342
Yeah.
343
Oh yeah, yeah.
344
To run this whole camp, it costs about $300 in fuel.
345
A month.
346
No way.
347
Home base whenever you're out here mining.
348
This is home base.
349
And then this is how we...
350
Oh yeah, let's see this.
351
How we process some stuff.
352
Oh, look at that gold in there.
353
Look how fine that is.
354
Here's a, we ran a couple hours yesterday and we got about $2,000 worth of gold.
355
Wow.
356
In a couple hours.
357
Then Jim gave Carlos and I a personal lesson on how to mine for gold.
358
Your gold stays in a pan.
359
You see that one piece right there?
360
Mm-hmm.
361
As you can see, Carlos is absolutely dialed in.
362
Oh, see, this would be addicting.
363
It's better than drugs.
364
Jim was so generous and gave us our own bags that we could pan through that actually have gold in them.
365
But there's still gold in it, so practice the craft.
366
So this hovercraft goes in the river?
367
Yeah, it flies!
368
It could go on the road.
369
Yeah, on the road, over rock.
370
Hovercraft!
371
Okay, so these guys told us they're gonna take us to the mine
372
and show us where they mine for gold out here.
373
They also gave us some gold potentially in here to pan through.
374
I couldn't believe that not only had we learned about the gold around here, but we'd actually gotten some of our own.
375
And after following them for a few miles down some crazy roads, we finally arrived at the mine.
376
here we are at the office not a bad place come on let's take a walk
377
what we're down right now is just about a foot above bedrock
378
there is gold in that stuff
379
so there's gold up there yes there's gold up there in
380
those gravels there's no place i'd rather be what a cool
381
job all right guys we are out here in near chicken Alaska with the boys we got Prince we got Yukon Bill, Tin Pan Jim and Carlos.
382
My personal favorite thing about Alaska is the remoteness and the lack of people.
383
It's not people-y.
384
Alone.
385
Yeah.
386
Not lonely.
387
Yeah.
388
There's a difference.
389
Big difference.
390
That's what we've started to learn because we've gone to like lonely places
391
but we realize there's a difference between being lonely and being alone.
392
Come to Alaska just to explore.
393
Yeah.
394
A lot of people think camping is like
395
like living homeless yeah it's living free yeah it's living free campaign gym
396
so no people yeah being alone yeah not lonely yeah the lord is with me
397
so i'm never alone speaking of that i have a gift for both of you
398
that i wanted to surprise you with and it ties just into
399
that one sec so we've been taking this journey and the message
400
that we want people to know
401
that they can feel lonely at times in their life but
402
that lonely won't last because god is with them then there's There's people, there's relationships, and it's not about quantity, it's about quality.
403
And we've been wearing these hats that say, lonely won't last.
404
Amen!
405
Amen!
406
He's singing my tune, bro!
407
He's singing my tune!
408
You guys are reinforcing that message that it's not about where, it's about who.
409
I got two more brothers I didn't even know did.
410
Carlos and I didn't realize that even in the loneliest town in America, we'd find some long-lost brothers.
411
Lord, bless them with sights they can only imagine.
412
Trust them with safety that they can only feel.
413
Lord, guide them in their walk of life and protect them.
414
Lord, we ask this in your most humble and gracious name, Yeshua, Savior.
415
