1
Hello students it's your IELTS tutor Jack.
2
Welcome back to another episode of the IELTS plus English podcast.
3
Today's topic is something I was quite looking forward to actually.
4
I do like talking about money.
5
How about you?
6
I think money can be kind of it splits people into people
7
that really enjoy talking about money
8
and those who don't you know it's kind of stressful
9
or unpleasant as a subject for me i do enjoy it
10
and i'm looking forward to answering some questions before
11
i start just a quick announcement firstly for my korean listeners i do have an academy here in gangnam seoul
12
so if you're interested if you'd like to come
13
and see me you can contact me you can find everything on jacks -english .com
14
if you are an international listener i do apologize I would love to meet you all, but I can't.
15
However, I am working on a textbook that will go with this podcast.
16
It will have lots of IELTS scripts and tips and strategies and all these different things.
17
I'm really excited to show you, but I am making it at the moment.
18
I'll give you further announcements in the future
19
so we're talking about money last lesson i mentioned hypotheticals
20
so i just want to give you a quick extra explanation before
21
we start today's topic about hypotheticals this is called the second conditional
22
you don't need to memorize what it's called the second conditional i do want you to memorize the
23
if clause with a would action so an example would be
24
if you won the lottery what would you do all i want to say to you is this
25
if you get a hypothetical you've got to catch
26
that wood in the question you must hear it
27
and you must use it in your answer if you don't
28
if you say
29
if i won the lottery i will buy a car in the ielts exam
30
you'll be marked down in real life it just sounds awkward
31
so please be careful of wood topics you know hypotheticals imagined scenarios imagined conditions
32
so to practice please answer the following question in your head
33
or comment in the youtube comments whatever you want to do
34
and it's this if i gave you a million dollars what would you do
35
if i gave you a million dollars what would you do of course
36
this is not real i'm not going to give you a million dollars
37
so we must use wood because it's imagined hypothetical in case you're interested
38
if i won a million dollars or
39
if you gave me a million dollars I would buy my dream house in England in the countryside.
40
You know what my dream house is
41
because we did home a few weeks ago so you can hear all about my dream house there.
42
Great let's get into some questions.
43
Today's first question is a part one.
44
How important is money to you?
45
Money is very important to me
46
because it allows me to do the things I want to do
47
and provide the lifestyle that I want to provide to my daughter and family.
48
I'm quite a frugal person not stingy you know stingy is a bit too negative I'm quite frugal
49
so my because my goal is to save money
50
and for the have the the lifestyle I want in the future are you more of a spender
51
or a saver well as i said i'm frugal
52
so i'm definitely more of a saver i do like to treat myself
53
sometimes to things like technology you know i love phones laptops cameras
54
that kind of stuff so sometimes i treat myself
55
but generally i'm a saver
56
and i i like to put my money in the bank good i'm warmed up i'm feeling comfortable
57
so we're going to do a part two question
58
i put two minutes on the clock today's question is describe something you want to buy
59
but can't afford okay well i'm gonna adjust this um you know i want to buy my dream house
60
but i've talked about my dream house so i'm gonna change it today
61
so two minutes are on the clock starting now i'd like to tell you about a campervan
62
In the past, I did a lot of hiking.
63
I've talked about this story a lot, but I did a lot of hiking and particularly I did a lot of caravanning.
64
My family had a caravan.
65
It was a caravan that you tow on the back of a car
66
and we would go to campsites
67
and stay there it was uh less luxurious you know it's nothing like staying in a hotel
68
but it was a very it was wonderful it was a fantastic experience
69
and great to experience a more simpler lifestyle
70
so let me tell you more about the camper van
71
i would like to buy it's something i definitely can't afford
72
it costs a lot of money i mean tens of thousands of dollars
73
but a camper van there are so many different types nowadays i would like something that's more of
74
an suv type car that has been converted into something
75
that you can sleep in
76
and even has kind of cooking equipment in it you know almost built into the car
77
i've seen it on youtube and
78
And basically you can you have the freedom to go anywhere you want and you can comfortably sleep at any location.
79
Of course, there are rules and regulations set by the government.
80
You can't just park on the side of the road.
81
But this kind of camper van would allow me and my family to really get into the mountains, have barbecues,
82
sleep um it kind of excites me to think about sleeping in quite rough conditions like rain
83
or snow perhaps the reality would not be as enjoyable anyway for me personally camping is uh
84
wow i didn't get very far in my structure i was just about to give my opinion about camping
85
and then i would talk about the future okay let's do some part three questions
86
and see if we can get some of this vocabulary in.
87
How much money is enough?
88
Well that's a difficult question because it very much depends on the person.
89
In my case enough money is the amount of money required for me to be financially independent meaning
90
I don't have to work
91
but I can choose to work on the things i enjoy
92
this would allow me to uh do the things i want to do to have the hobbies
93
that i want to to engage in i don't need to be well off
94
that's not something that's important to me
95
but yeah for me enough money is it's it allows me not to work okay well
96
we're doing well we're getting through some of this vocabulary let's
97
do another part three do you think parents should give pocket money to kids
98
i think yes parents should give pocket money to kids obviously
99
it depends on the financial situation are the is are the parents able to give pocket money to their kids
100
that's the important thing firstly but
101
if they are able to i think
102
it's good to set up a system where the kid can gather the money
103
and learn how to manage money learn how to save and
104
if they have a target in mind some kind of toy they can set aside money collect it together
105
and and learn how to save for something i think that's a really important skill in my case
106
when i was my parents did give me pocket money it wasn't much compared to some people
107
but it was enough that it allowed me to learn how to save
108
and buy the things I wanted to buy
109
so very valuable lesson
110
I think final question today what problems does money cause in your society well that's a very good question
111
and I will talk about career because I maybe
112
because I'm an adult now
113
and I see issues caused by money most importantly
114
I see issues with competition people seem to buy things to show off
115
they are buying things in order to look maybe look richer wealthier to look more you know higher in society
116
so they buy things like handbags watches expensive cars sports cars
117
which i think for some people it's fine they have the money but when it comes to problems
118
It's people who are buying things outside of their financial ability, you know, outside of the amount of money they have.
119
So the competition causes people to make extravagant purchases, totally unnecessary.
120
I see it around me among my friends and I really try to avoid it.
121
Excellent.
122
Easy to talk about today again
123
and something as i said i really enjoy you will have topics you enjoy
124
so i i do hope you get those topics in the ielts exam that's everything i have for you today
125
and i hope you enjoyed today's episode i really appreciate
126

129

130
which will be music oh okay music an interesting one
131
