1
Hi, welcome to Simple IELTS Solutions.
2
My name is Simon.
3
Thanks very much for joining me.
4
This video is all about the subject of computers.
5
The topic of computers comes up quite regularly in speaking and also in writing.
6
And these are some of the very latest IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions
7
I'm going to go through two questions with you
8
and also give you two model answers what would life be
9
like without a computer for you can you let me know in the comments below
10
I want to hear what your answer to this question would be right without further ado let's get started
11
i out speaking part one topic computers what will your life be like without computers
12
why don't you pause the video here try and answer the question yourself
13
or better still let me know in the comments below what your answer to this question would be
14
and then we can carry on and see how I've answered this
15
unfortunately I'm old enough
16
that I can actually recall a time before the advent of computers unlike many of the younger generation
17
I think life would be much slower paced without them
18
because we would have to rely on the post or snail mail rather than email.
19
So, vocabulary -wise, we've got recall.
20
To recall is a verb.
21
So, instead of saying remember, I said recall.
22
So, this is a verb we can use instead of remember, and it means the same thing, really.
23
Advent the advent of computers I talk about the advent of computers that's a noun
24
and that's the beginning or the start of something is an advent
25
and generation is a noun and these are people of a similar age
26
and snail mail snail mail is an idiom
27
and this is referring to the normal postal service
28
so sending a letter in the post don't forget to hit
29
that like button if you're liking this video
30
and also share it with anyone else you think it would be useful for
31
and I also want to invite you to my IELTS speaking course
32
and this only takes five hours of your time
33
and this is designed so you could make an answer even
34
if you have only limited vocabulary about the topic
35
so check the link in the description below
36
and that's my IELTS speaking course right back to the video in what condition would you not use a computer
37
it's another strangely worded
38
question but I think they mean
39
when would it be bad for you to use a computer or when would you not use a computer.
40
Don't forget you can pause the video now and answer the question yourself and then see how I've answered.
41
I think it would be frowned upon or probably prohibited to use a computer in a formal academic exam.
42
If you were taking a test in the examination hall
43
I'm sure the invigilators would not be keen on you firing up your laptop to look up the answers.
44
Let's look at the vocabulary I used there.
45
So if you were taking a test I'm using a conditional sentence here
46
and it's a good idea to show the examiner lots of different types of grammar structures
47
so they can give you a good score for your grammatical range
48
and accuracy vocabulary wise we got frowned upon it would be frowned upon frowned upon is an idiom
49
and that means basically disapproved of
50
or they would not like it prohibited it's an adjective means forbidden
51
or not allowed exam is another word for a test invigilators it's a plural noun
52
and these are the people who supervise the exam
53
Keen on is a phrasal verb.
54
You know I like to use phrasal verbs because they're very easy to use.
55
They're much easier to use than idioms.
56
And you can use them in a lot of different circumstances.
57
And keen on is a great one to use because it basically just means like.
58
But here I've said not be keen on, so it means don't like.
59
firing up another phrasal verb and that's basically turning something on
60
so if you fire up the tv it means you turn on the tv
61
so that's my IELTS speaking part one model answers about computers
62
there's lots of vocabulary in there to give you ideas um
63
I hope you've written your answer to the part to the first question in the comments below
