1
Terry here is going to be taking over from Vanessa Williams in The Devil Wears Prada
2
which has broken box office records since first opening in 2024.
3
Yes, it follows aspiring journalist Andy as she gets a job at the fashion magazine Runway working for Miranda, one of the industry's most powerful figures.
4
But before we talk about it, here's a taster of the smash hit show.
5
A million girls would kill for this job. Do you read Runway?
6
Not often.
7
What if I don't want this life?
8
Everybody wants to be us.
9
That's all.
10
It's such a fun show, and it's such the right time to be offering this kind of joy to an audience
11
and vanessa um was my first phone call when i got the offer
12
because we've been friends for decades from desperate housewives
13
and before from the 90s from radio shack commercials that's actually where really oh yeah i'm very old um
14
anyways i called her and i said what do you think
15
and she said i've been talking to the producers about you for a year i'm
16
so glad they offered it to you you should absolutely do it you'd have
17
so much fun and my daughter had actually seen vanessa in it like a year ago
18
and she doubled down on how great it was
19
and how much fun i would have
20
so the two of them easily convinced me to join the
21
top of my musical list me too on the list of
22
things to see i mean there's everything in this incredible outfits there's dancing there's singing
23
but this isn't going to be the first time
24
that you've performed in front of a crowd is it no
25
um i most recently i did morticia adams in the adams family
26
which was great
27
and I kind of see a little through line from Morticia
28
to Miranda they'd be friends friends they both have agency
29
and confidence and you know far more control than I do personally
30
and before that was quite a few decades ago
31
but was an honor I played Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes Rob Marshall version of cabaret
32
and I did that I toured that in the US for seven months
33
but i missed out on broadway
34
because um i was exhausted needed a break well things happen
35
for a reason now rehearsals haven't started yet have they
36
but apparently watching the film is helping you especially the scene
37
where miranda has a bit of a go at andy
38
when she's in that blue jumper well i yeah i mean i'm actually not watching the film
39
and not really seeing vanessa in it too much
40
because i want to have space to like bring my own thing to it
41
but that said the dialogue is very similar to the movie in in the musical yeah
42
and i was recently in mexico city to see rosalia who by the way is fantastic
43
if anyone hasn't seen her and my daughter was with me
44
and we were in the car on the way to the concert yeah
45
and my daughter said the word stuff i don't know what
46
we were talking about maybe it was how much stuff should we buy in mexico i don't know
47
but she said the word stuff and I just it ticked me off
48
and I went oh stuff you know and I just went into
49
that oh okay I see and I just went into the whole cerulean speech
50
and she looked at me and she went mom
51
when I come to visit you I think I'm going to have to see the play every night
52
because that was amazing and Elton John sir Elton John I should say has done the music
53
but this is not the first time
54
but you've worked with him is it isn't
55
that crazy yeah back in 2005 um he asked me to be in a music video
56
that he did and there it is i mean i really it was surreal it was just insane
57
that i was
58
that elton john was actually playing an upright piano in this
59
yard in a in this in a part of los angeles
60
i it was it was it was crazy i would have
61
felt a bit self -conscious i'll be honest what he did
62
do for me i brought my childhood um yellow brick road album
63
and i was so shy you know because it's elton john
64
and i was like would you sign my album for me
65
and he did
66
and now i have it um oh there it is i
67
have it framed um in my house uh it's sort of a wonderful piece of memorabilia very cool i mean
68
so i can't believe i'm working with him again i'm
69
so excited yeah and he's so lovely as well
70
and i'm actually of course another show taken to the stage is dinner ladies you were just 24
71
when you started that alongside victoria wood what was
72
that like well it was mind -blowing at the time
73
because victoria wood was the reason i wanted to be a
74
performer yeah you know i was obsessed with her since you know i can remember
75
so to get it was my first job at drama school
76
so it was yeah it was an extraordinary time with all
77
those extraordinary cast members you know you think you know julie walters celia rimway
78
and read and then we had an episode where we had dora brian you know, Thora Heard and Eric Sykes, yeah, so I, yeah, sort of...
79
know bucket list ticks yeah before we just started yeah yeah
80
and we have to of course mention susan in desperate housewives okay
81
and the scene where susan so brilliant gets locked out of a house naked uh was
82
that really good fun to film because you say
83
that was one of the standout ones for you yeah you
84
know interestingly enough i'm doing this rewatch podcast that's streaming on hulu starting in november
85
and i'm doing it with my daughter in real life emerson and my daughter on the show, Andrea Bowen, and we've been re -watching the show.
86
It's my daughter's first time re -watching it.
87
And so we just went through the first season, and we're just now halfway into the second season.
88
And we were talking the other day about, what is your favorite scene you've seen so far?
89
And collectively, she likes that scene the best.
90
I like that scene the best.
91
James Denton, who played Mike, likes that scene the best.
92
It seems to have sort of lasted the test of time.
93
It really, it was, I love the choreography of it it was it was really a dance between the steady cam operator
94
and the wardrobe department
95
that yeah figure out in the prop department figuring out how to cover the bits you don't want to see
96
and um yeah it was a memorable moment yeah when we watched it earlier i remembered it instantly
97
well you can see terry in the devil wears prada the musical at london's dominion theater from the 20th of October.
