Shadowing Practice: I Spent $100 At A Canadian Grocery Store... Here's What I Got - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creando lección...
1
I'm not quite sure what to expect when it comes to my first big grocery haul back in Canada,
2
guys, after living abroad for the last two years.
3
I've heard from my dad how much prices have gone up on a whole,
4
but to be fair, I think that's unfortunately the case in most places in the world.
5
Sofia, Bulgaria, where I currently live, being one of them.
6
So it's going to be interesting to see how prices have changed.
7
I think when I was last living here, I was averaging maybe six, seven hundred Canadian dollars a month, something like that.
8
But then again, it all depends what you buy, right?
9
It all depends what kind of groceries you are getting.
10
So in today's video, I'm going to be taking you to Superstore,
11
which overall I would say is one of the more budget friendly grocery stores in Canada
12
that has a lot of selection
13
and overall I'd say it's my top place to go to so let's go take a look how things have changed
14
so the first thing that i'm going to get is actually a roast chicken
15
and i feel like 10.99 is still a very reasonable price like i know some people really love costco
16
because you can get the roast chickens you know for a lot less there but 10.99 10.99 is not bad
17
i will say that it's always the cut fruit or vegetables
18
that get absolutely crazily priced like even though this looks like a big platter i would not say
19
that this is that much fruit and for 25 like that's crazy
20
as far as the worst price offenders go in canadian groceries i would actually say
21
that it's the produce section i have mentioned in many past videos
22
that i think the produce that we get in canada unfortunately isn't the best quality
23
and it's very very expensive and the other thing to keep in mind is
24
that these prices are per pound right like in europe everything is in kilos
25
which is 2.2 times a pound
26
but generally the prices will still be you know even less
27
per kilo than we have here per pound i would say
28
that berries are some of the worst offenders uh when it comes to high prices in Canada, but to be honest, like,
29
it's not that bad here, I would say.
30
Like, five dollars is a generally normal price for what raspberries would cost, but of course they are in season,
31
and then over here, it looks like they have strawberries and, like, a whole bunch of them for only four dollars,
32
so to be honest, that's not bad.
33
when i am feeling lazy one of my favorite things to get is these salad kits
34
and usually you know they are quite expensive at like seven dollars for not
35
that much salad but look today they have them on sale for only four dollars
36
when do they expire actually not for a while so that is a very good deal.
37
so now as far as bread goes this is something
38
that i regret to inform you
39
that canada does not have the best bread quality in my opinion like in the regular grocery stores it has
40
so many preservatives in it because it literally lasts weeks and it's kind of soft and mushy a lot of times, but it is cheap.
41
Like it is generally cheap if you get that kind of stuff, but if you are getting better quality bread, like even just remotely better,
42
it's basically double the price.
43
And if you went to an actual bakery that had freshly made sourdough or any other kind of artisanal bread, double that price basically.
44
okay i am actually shocked at the price of this ground
45
beef like ground beef guys i know it's you know quite a bit of it
46
but still like almost 30 for 1.3 kilos my god it
47
when it comes to butter or margarine
48
or whatever this has definitely got more expensive i'm seeing like
49
8.99 for the big tubs five for the small ones like i remember they used to be three
50
and then if you want actual real butter it's basically on sale for six dollars
51
and then the more fancy kinds are like eight dollars and up
52
so definitely expensive one
53
of the other staples in my diet is cottage cheese because you know it's like high
54
in protein and and generally has you know good nutrition
55
but i'm so confused of why they have
56
so few brands they literally have just the no name
57
or this nordica kind and i mean it's 849 for this one
58
and it's 549 for this guy so i guess i'll get this one but still so
59
and here we are in one of the most expensive sections of the grocery store
60
you guys 40 dollars like i know this says three liters, but still.
61
To be fair, it was also very expensive in Bulgaria where this size of olive oil would regularly be $13.
62
Here I guess, you know, it's a savings of $4 for basically better quality that is, you know, cold pressed, extra virgin from Greece.
63
so yeah olive oil is liquid gold
64
I'm sorry. so
65
okay
66
so as far as frozen food goes i will say the
67
pc blue menu is actually decent first of all it's fairly budget-friendly priced at like four five dollars a meal
68
and I feel like the quality is also quite good.
69
I especially like the chicken korma.
70
Butter chicken is also good.
71
The lasagna is amazing so not bad for frozen food.
72
all right three very large bags of groceries let me show
73
you guys what i got i do have to say
74
that i was not wowed by the produce selection
75
that they had at superstore today
76
so i'm going to be getting some extra produce at some smaller local stores in my area
77
because I think the quality is better but I did get the four dollar strawberries, bananas, I got some organic baby carrots,
78
celery which is also organic, I got a restaurante pizza that was on sale,
79
I got the two for nine dollar frozen meals you know just to have when I don't feel like cooking.
80
Can of black beans, some tzatziki sauce for the carrots and celery,
81
walnuts I think were like ten dollars, some microwave popcorn, pumpkin seeds,
82
um oh yeah this lettuce mix that was actually for a really good price at four dollars
83
the roast chicken which also I think is quite a deal at 10.99 actually the crazy part is
84
that I think the chicken that are not cooked that are more
85
or less this size are almost more expensive I thought I
86
remember them being like that's crazy how is a cooked chicken uh less expensive than a raw chicken.
87
For some fun treats I ended up getting these kind of Asian snacks.
88
These were pretty cheap.
89
I think they were like two dollars each.
90
I got some maple syrup which if you're getting the real stuff this can actually be quite expensive.
91
I got some Greek yogurt for breakfast bowls.
92
Also some cottage cheese for protein pancakes that I like to make.
93
I got some spreadable butter and then lastly I also just got a packet of granulated sugar since we were out.
94
So this is everything that I got
95
and the price the price to be honest it's not good it's obviously not good I wish things were less expensive
96
but it's also not absolutely insane.
97
Comment down below if you expected it to be higher or lower.
98
It came to 108 more or less 109 Canadian dollars.
99
So that is quite a bit but I do feel like I did buy quite a few things, especially since I have a whole chicken,
100
I have some frozen food, I have, you know, these big tubs for breakfast.
101
I did get some fruit, some vegetables.
102
These are obviously expensive.
103
This is expensive.
104
So do I think that these prices should be lower?
105
Absolutely.
106
I think, you know, if you have the average paying job in Canada,
107
which I believe is around 60,000 Canadian dollars,
108
you know, per person and considering how high the rent or to buy a place is nowadays,
109
you know, higher grocery prices are just one extra thing to worry about.
110
But on the other hand, I almost was expecting it to be worse.
111
From some of the other videos that I've seen online of Canadians showing grocery prices, it's far more insane than what I saw today,
112
but that's why I think it really depends where you go.
113
Grocery stores like Metro or Loblaws, those tend to be higher than places like Superstore or Freshco,
114
and it all depends what you want to get.
115
If you're not looking for sales and
116
if you just absolutely need to have a certain brand of course it's going to be a lot higher
117
but I do find that
118
if you go to you know the more budget-friendly sort of grocery stores
119
if you look at the different sales they have going on every week try
120
and meal prep so you use everything up you can you can make things more budget-friendly
121
but should you have to do that
122
you know that's that's a question for every person I feel
123
like shelter food water medical care like those are all basic necessities for every human being
124
and you know governments should be trying their best to make them as affordable as possible
125
and making it a priority so yeah
126
that is my grocery haul for the day I would love
127
to hear from you guys in the comments whether you are Canadian or somewhere else in the world.
128
Let me know how these prices compare to what you would usually spend in a week or a month.
129
But yeah, I hope you guys found this video helpful.
130
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
131
And as always, keep being your own kind of beautiful.
132
Bye guys.
