One of the best ways to become fluent in English is
2
to be able to grow your vocabulary to speak about real world situations.
3
And today you are going to learn a lot of vocabulary to be able to speak about two things
4
that happen every single day in my house, and maybe they happen every day in your house too.
5
If you're new here, hi, I'm Vanessa from SpeakEnglishWithVanessa .com, And I have been teaching real life English

my YouTube channel for over the past 10 years to now more than 7 million of you.
8
Thank you so much for learning English with me.

13
And every week I create a free PDF worksheet
14
that will help you to level up what you have learned in today's lesson.
15
You're not just watching, but you're also using what you've learned with this worksheet
16
because inside the worksheet is not just all the vocabulary, all the sample sentences, all the ideas you're going to learn,
17
but also there is a bonus speaking and bonus listening practice that are included in the worksheet.
18
You need to be able to use what you've learned, right?
19
That's the best way to make it stick and be able to use it.
20
So the best way to do this is to get the worksheet and the bonus speaking and listening practices.
21

22
and voila, the PDF worksheet plus the bonus speaking and listening practice will land in your email inbox.
23
It is my gift to you.
24
So here's the big question.
25
Do these two activities happen every day in your house too?
26
Do you need to do the laundry and do the dishes every day?
27
My house has five people who live here, two adults and three kids.
28
And let me tell you, we go through a lot of clothes and a lot of dishes.
29
So I want to bring you along while I fold the laundry
30
and while I wash the dishes to talk about all of the pieces of clothing.
31
Some of these you might never have heard.
32
These are not just beginner some clothing expressions, and all of the dishes that I'm going to wash.
33
I will explain each one and what they are so
34
that you can grow your real life vocabulary and be able to use it in the real world.
35
Are you ready?
36
Let's go to the laundry.
37
All right, let's get started and see what task lies before me.
38
I have laundry here from my youngest daughter, my middle son, my oldest son,
39
me and my husband, and I just try to fold them and place them all in kind of chronological order, youngest to oldest.
40
First, if a shirt is inside out like this one was, I have to turn it right side out.
41
Isn't that kind of a strange expression?
42
Right side out.
43
Why not left side out, inside out, right side out, strange expressions here.
44
This is a collared shirt.
45
It is my husband's collared shirt.
46
And because those get hung up on hangers, I just lay them here and I take them to the bedroom later to hang up.
47
This shirt is also inside out.
48
So I put my hand inside it, pull it right side out, shake it out a bit and fold it up.
49
It's nothing magical, but it works.
50
This is my daughter's dress.
51
Isn't it so tiny and cute?
52
And because these also get hung up, I just kind of gently fold them and lay them here.
53
These are my son's shorts.
54
These are kind of like sweat shorts.
55
They're really comfy.
56
And I just fold those once, lay them down.
57
Some more shorts for my daughter.
58
Another dress for her.
59
We have some PJs.
60
So these are pajamas, but for me and my family, we call them PJs.
61
You can say pajamas, no problem.
62
Sometimes for children, we say jammies.
63
For some reason, my family doesn't say that.
64
These are also PJs for my daughter.
65
Yeah, I don't know why.
66
Why don't we call them jammies?
67
It's kind of cute.
68
This is a very specific item.
69
I don't know if you would know what this is if you didn't have a baby.
70
This is called a sleep sack.
71
It is like a wearable blanket because babies can't.
72
have a blanket.
73
When they sleep, they could suffocate.
74
They can wear a sleep sack and you zip them up and it's like a little blanket.
75
All right, I have another dress.
76
These adorable corduroy pants that my lovely neighbor, Michelle, gave to my daughter.
77
If you have not yet met Michelle, she is on my YouTube channel here.
78
We talk about gardening together and sometimes she likes to buy clothes for my kids.
79
These are sweatpants.
80
These are really comfortable pants and my oldest son refuses to wear anything else except for sweatpants.
81
Whatever.
82
I don't really care.
83
It's comfy.
84
We got t -shirts.
85
Oh, another cute.
86
This is a long sleeve shirt.
87
Michelle got this for my daughter.
88
So it is new.
89
It has not been worn yet.
90
Some more sweat shorts.
91
Now this is a new item.
92
This is a tea towel.
93
This tea towel goes in the kitchen and usually you use it to dry your hands.
94
I use it sometimes to dry dishes or clean up messes.
95
I have a lot of messes around my house.
96
Someone is always spilling something.
97
I remember one morning I counted five things
98
that I needed to clean up off the floor that had been spilled before 8 a .m.
99
That's a crazy morning.
100
There was always something that needed to be cleaned up.
101
Oh, you have to see this shirt.
102
This is one of Dan's t -shirts that I got him.
103
It says, it's not a dad bod, it's a father figure
104
so this phrase dad bod is often used to describe
105
when men who are 30s and 40s have a little belly
106
so they're not really super fit anymore they call it a dad bod
107
but instead of being a dad body father figure his figure but this phrase father figure also means someone who is
108
the man in your life who you look up to, who is like a father.
109
Maybe he is a father.
110
He might not be your actual father, but we could say he's like a father figure.
111
It's very important, someone impressionable in your life.
112
I'm not sure if you can get the joke of that t -shirt.
113
It's not a dad bod.
114
It's a father figure.
115
It's very silly.
116
Usually on Father's Day, I like to get Dan silly father -related t -shirts.
117
He has several of them at this point.
118
This is a cloth napkin.
119
I don't know why I fold these because they just get messed up very quickly, but there you have it.
120
Sometimes I do.
121
We have some more PJs for my daughter.
122
Shorts.
123
These are shorts, regular shorts for my son.
124
This is kind of a weird time of year when we have both shorts and long pants.
125
So it kind of means more organization for me because I have to put different piles of clothes out for each kid.
126
There's short sleeve stuff and shorts long pants long sleeve stuff
127
so it's all um it's a little bit more to manage but
128
when you have five people in your house three children two
129
adults there is always something to manage right always have to
130
fold some kind of laundry do some kind of dishes now dan my husband he is in charge of dishes.
131
So he does dishes every night and I do laundry every couple days.
132
Have you ever seen this before?
133
This is not extremely common in the US, but I love it.
134
It's these little reusable, zippable bags.
135
It's like got a plastic lining on the inside we have probably 20 of these
136
and we use them for school lunches
137
because in the U .S you have to you can buy a lunch at school
138
but at my kids school they don't offer lunch you have to bring your own lunch from home
139
so we have these little bags
140
that we put carrots apples sandwiches whatever in these little bags
141
and we can reuse them how great is that I love it it makes my heart happy
142
this is a washcloth I use this to remove some makeup so you can see there are still
143
I don't know if you can see this, but there's still some stains on it.
144
It doesn't bother me because I'm just going to use this to take off some makeup.
145
So this is just for me.
146
Socks.
147
I usually leave socks in a big old pile.
148
And then at the end, when I'm done doing all the laundry, I sort the socks.
149
This is my shirt and it will get hung up.
150
I will lay that there.
151
All right, we're almost done with one whole basket.
152
What a dream.
153
Empty success.
154
But I have some bad news.
155
I have more.
156
Sometimes it feels like I'm doing all of the clothes that exist in our entire house.
157
Now for some shirts like this one, it's inside out, but I don't really care.
158
I'm going to just fold it wrong way out, inside out.
159
This is my dress.
160
I am going to turn this one right side out.
161
This we would call a sundress.
162
It's light.
163
It's only for the hottest days of summer.
164
And even though it's probably more fall -like now, I still wear this because some afternoons are just so hot.
165
And I am someone who gets hot very easily, sweats very easily.
166
So I like to wear light clothes, things that keep my body cool longer.
167
All right, we got some more sweat pants.
168
These, a new item.
169
This is a placemat.
170
It goes on the table underneath your plate.
171
And for these, I just fold them in half.
172
There'll probably be a bunch of them because I usually grab all of our placemats at once and wash them all.
173
Just a quick note when we're talking about laundry
174
when we're talking about the whole process washing it drying it folding it putting it away we say do the laundry.
175
I need to do the laundry.
176
This verb do is essential.
177
You can't say I'm making the laundry.
178
I'm having the laundry.
179
You have to say I'm doing the laundry.
180
Now for some of those other tasks, these are my workout shorts for working out, getting strong.
181
For the individual tasks, we can say, I'm washing the clothes.
182
I'm putting the clothes in the washing machine, which is what I have.
183
And then after I take them out of the washing machine, I put them in the dryer because in the US, some people do hang their clothes,
184
but I would say it's pretty rare it's pretty rare yeah
185
it's pretty rare especially for someone to hang all their clothes
186
and I know in some countries it's unheard of to actually use a dryer
187
but in the U .S it's really common I know it's not good for energy
188
and for the environment but we use them all the time
189
and I think when you get in the habit of using a dryer it's hard to break that habit right right?
190
And when you have this much laundry, I just don't have time to hang it up, fold it, then it's all crinkly.
191
When you put things in the dryer, they get soft.
192
So it feels like, yeah, I don't need to iron them.
193
It's just nicer.
194
Sorry if that's really bad for the environment, but that's the way it is these are some green placemats
195
and these this is my son's short sleeve shirt we call this a t -shirt a t -shirt
196
or just a short sleeve shirt these are they have ripped off the lining on the outside
197
but these are some tie -dye washcloths
198
that my children use they were not originally tie -dye we had some kind of tie -dye project
199
and they tie -dyed them
200
so whenever I do laundry there's three of them I tie
201
-dye them you might be wondering Vanessa why do you not cut off this long string it's
202
because my kids love it I don't know why they play
203
games with the their bath toys with these strings I don't
204
even know sometimes kids find the strangest things to have fun with, so I leave it.
205
And I'm sure someday when my kids are grown, I'll look back fondly on those silly things.
206
All right, what have we got left?
207
Still a nice little pile here.
208
This is my husband's colored shirt, so I would call that a short sleeve.
209
colored shirt and it gets hung up in the closet ideally
210
so I will put it on the couch these are some sweatpants these are my husband's sweatpants
211
and I will loosely fold those we've got some more
212
pjs for my kids usually for my kids because they're small they're young they can turn their clothes right side out.
213
But I think if I do it while I'm doing the laundry, it kind of saves some hassle.
214
I can imagine later when they're about to go to bed and they get their PJs and they're so tired.
215
It's the end of the day.
216
And then their PJs are inside out like, oh, they're inside out.
217
I can't put them on.
218
If you are a parent, you know that situation
219
so I try my best for my kids clothes especially to
220
turn them right side out that's a fixed phrase you have to use all together I turn it
221
or turn them right side out right side out I think I've said
222
that a lot during this video like these I will turn
223
them right side out wow we have quite an impressive stack of folded clothes already
224
and we're almost done all right this is my workout shirt.
225
So we could say tank top.
226
It's just a tank top.
227
A tank top has no sleeves.
228
Kind of like this shirt.
229
It's a tank top.
230
It has no sleeves.
231
And it's because when I work out, I sweat a lot.
232
These are also PJs, adult PJs for me.
233
And now we are left with almost just socks.
234
All right.
235
So I have a skirt.
236
This is my skirt and it said on the tag, so you can read the tag and it says how to wash it.
237
It said wash with cold water, but I don't have time for that.
238
I wash everything all together.
239
I don't separate things by color.
240
I don't separate delicate things from not delicate things.
241
The only things I separate are generally towels, like big bath towels, or if I'm washing a little rug or something,
242
I'll put that in separately.
243
But if it's clothes, it's all going in together at the same time.
244
I don't know.
245
Do you separate clothes if you have to do laundry for your whole family?
246
Are you dedicated and do you actually separate clothes?
247
I know when I was growing up, I was taught, I don't know who taught me this because I don't even know if my parents did this,
248
but I was taught you should have lights and darks.
249
Maybe it's that nowadays we don't care for our clothes in the same way.
250
Excuse me.
251
It's another little bag and you can just throw them in the wash and they're clean.
252
It's amazing.
253
You can even throw them in the dishwasher and wash them.
254
yeah I don't separate things lights and darks
255
and maybe my clothes won't last as long maybe it damages my clothes
256
but some socks
257
but in the end I would rather save the time I don't have fancy clothes maybe that's it
258
if I had fancy clothes then I would take more care to separate them, but I don't.
259
All right.
260
Now we are left with this lovely pile of socks.
261
Let's talk about how we, the, the expressions we use to talk about socks.
262
And if you have made it this far into watching someone else fold laundry, congratulations.
263
All right.
264
So I have two socks that are a matching pair.
265
Pair is the word that I would use for these socks, a pair of socks, and they are a matching pair.
266
Hooray!
267
Now sometimes if my kids are around, right now two of my kids are at school and one is taking a nap,
268
but if my kids are around I do have them help me do the laundry and sometimes it works out, sometimes it does not.
269
Sometimes someone walks through all of the beautifully folded clothes and ah it's a disaster,
270
but I'm generally trying to also teach them how to fold things, how to separate.
271
These are your clothes.
272
These are his clothes.
273
And I think in general, just helping kids learn chores is good.
274
But if you are a parent and you have ever tried to teach children how to do chores,
275
you will know that it is 10 times the amount of effort.
276
Oh, I have so many.
277
unmatched socks.
278
It is 10 times the amount of effort to teach your kids to do chores than to just do them.
279
But in the long run, it's helpful to do it.
280
So I try to teach my kids how to do chores
281
whenever they're around all right we have purple yellow gray
282
blue green brown blue oh it's a different blue uh three of dan's socks
283
and three of my daughter's socks bad news where did the
284
rest did the socks go oh I see oh no that's
285
a dirty sock oh I mismatched these okay we have a brown sock
286
so I'm going to match these and when I put them incorrectly together I said mismatched I
287
mismatched the socks but now they are correctly matched all right these ones
288
because they're my kids and my kids don't care
289
if their socks are the same color I am just going to fold them together
290
and they will not care I don't know if your kids care about this kind of stuff but for me
291
my kids reach into the sock drawer grab whatever they want
292
and put them on all right I have a bonus sock
293
so it's just going to go in the drawer these three socks are surprise oh I found one
294
well those two socks need a matching pair their matching pair has been
295
uh stolen by little elves somewhere these three socks my daughter doesn't care either
296
so I'll just put a yellow sock and a blue sock together who cares
297
and this sock is going to just have a little solo
298
party all right well there we have it all of the clothes are folded the laundry baskets are empty.
299
My job is still not done
300
because I need to put all of these clothes back in my kid's room and my room.
301
It's a big job to do the laundry.
302
Well, great work while I folded that laundry.
303
Watching along, maybe you were also doing the laundry.
304
I have to tell you something funny.
305
When I told my friends that I created a lesson about clothes while I was folding the laundry.
306
They thought that I was crazy, that this would be the most boring thing ever.
307
Who wants to learn while someone's folding the laundry?
308
But I'm proud to say they were wrong when I originally shared this lesson with you.
309
You loved it.
310
This is a great way to learn in the real world with real life objects and real life situations.
311
So I was very proud to tell them they were wrong.
312
You were right.
313
This was a lesson that you loved and I hope you still love.
314
All right, let's go on to the second everyday situation, which is washing the dishes.
315
You're going to learn a lot.
316
Let's go.
317
So to wash the dishes, I have this little reusable washcloth thing, and I have some dish soap
318
and I have some strong power actually let me get this
319
water a little bit hot actually this job washing the dishes has been my husband's job for many years
320
so he was very excited that I was going to film this video
321
because I would do his job for him
322
so here in the sink I have dishes from this morning
323
and dishes from all day yesterday for all five of my family members me my husband
324
and my three children so you will see dishes
325
that we used for cooking dishes that we used for eating some children's dishes
326
and who knows what else is in here it looks like
327
a mess um all right let's just get started I'm going to put some water.
328
I am a lucky duck who has a dishwasher.
329
So usually we just rinse the dishes
330
and I'm going to put some soap on here
331
and usually I just give them a very quick rinse so that there's nothing sticking to them.
332
These are just some spoons
333
and what I'm going to do usually I would put these directly into the dishwasher
334
but I'm going to put them just in a little bowl over here
335
and then I'll show you my dishwasher in a second
336
so these are all of our spoons
337
that we used for oatmeal this morning these are our kids oatmeal bowls just little plastic bowls
338
that kids can use so that they don't break them whenever we have our kids use what we call fragile balls.
339
They get so excited.
340
It's just a regular bowl, but it is fragile and it can break.
341
These are our kids' plates.
342
More kids' plates.
343
Sometimes they stain.
344
So this has blueberry juice on it, but I don't really care.
345
The dishwasher will probably take care of it.
346
And if it doesn't, that's okay, right?
347
Gotta just let it slide.
348
This is a mug.
349
I love this mug it's glass
350
so you can see the color of the tea inside it
351
which is very exciting to me all right we'll put those
352
in the dishwasher in a moment here I have we call this a mason jar it's just a little jar
353
that has a lid and please don't judge my sink continuing to flow while I'm doing this
354
uh we have these reusable straws my kids love to use a straw but I hate to buy disposable ones so
355
we just have some reusable ones these are some kid cups
356
more plastic cups more straws I think this morning my husband
357
made some yogurt with cacao powder in it it was so good
358
and the kids wanted to slurp it up with a straw so we have more straws than usual
359
for me I would call this a cup you could call it a glass
360
because it is made of glass
361
but I just call it a cup oh we have lots
362
of kid bowls all right we're just going to get some of the oatmeal debris out of this note that
363
that word debris has a silent s at the end in
364
fact I have a memory as a uh as a fourth grader my teacher teaching us
365
that debris had a silent s and she called each kid into the hallway
366
and said how do you pronounce this to see
367
if we had been listening
368
that debris should have a silent s I got it right
369
I was listening all right we have a couple extra more cups.
370
Kid cups.
371
Those ones are not too messy.
372
This is what I would, I would personally call this a Tupperware dish.
373
There's a lid somewhere in here, but this Tupperware dish, Tupperware is the brand.
374
You could call this, what would you even call this if you don't call it a Tupperware dish.
375
I have never heard it called anything else.
376
Plasticware?
377
I don't know.
378
This is a Tupperware dish.
379
I don't know what we had in there, but leftovers.
380
We had some kind of leftovers in there.
381
Some more spoons.
382
This is a pot that we cooked oatmeal in this morning.
383
So there's some kind of like crusty pieces stuck to the outside of this
384
and I have somewhere a little I don't know where it
385
is I'm going to use this this is like a little this is just a piece of plastic really
386
but you could use this is called steel wool I find it really abrasive
387
so I have a plastic version that if it's not really difficult, I'd rather just use the plastic version.
388
This doesn't really have a name.
389
I would just call it a scrubber.
390
Um, I've never really seen that kind of thing before until my mother -in -law gave this to me and I thought, huh, pretty cool.
391
I want to know, do you use gloves when you wash the dishes?
392
Um, I never do, as you can see.
393
my husband does not either
394
and I just wash my hands afterwards it's fine right it's not a restaurant it's just our house um
395
so this uh this I would call just a plate you might see
396
a small plate in a textbook being called a saucer
397
because you put it under a teacup but this is too big to be a saucer.
398
And I use it as a actual plate, not just to put underneath a cup.
399
So this is just a little plate.
400
That's what I would call it.
401
All right.
402
We got some fun stuff down here.
403
Oh boy.
404
This is yesterday's oatmeal pot.
405
Kind of gross.
406
But when I said I was going to make a video doing the dishes, we tried to pile up as many dishes as possible.
407
Uh, so this has, this still has some residue of oatmeal in the bottom, but I can put it in the dishwasher and it's going to be okay.
408
Pretty cool.
409
So we'll see that in just a minute.
410
Um, I have my spatula.
411
I don't remember what I cooked with this, but something there are forks.
412
These forks are not too dirty.
413
I'm just going to put them in the dishwasher.
414
Pretty dirty.
415
Uh, this I would call a steak knife you might call
416
this something different you can also call it you can see here it has this really
417
bumpy edge this is a serrated knife my kids call them serrated knives
418
and I think it's super cute because serrated is such a an advanced word um
419
but they uh they like to say that these are tongs
420
and there's quite a bit of debris on it so that's why I'm wiping them off
421
these are tongs you can grab things grab things with them
422
I made a roast pork the other day it was so good
423
and I used those tongs to grab the pork out this
424
is technically I think there's even a name on it um
425
I don't think it's considered a chef's knife um just a chopping knife I would call this simply a sharp knife.
426
Isn't that such a boring thing to say?
427
But it's so true.
428
I feel like sometimes there's these very specialized vocabulary words
429
that you might learn and then they're just not used in real life.
430
I would just call this a sharp knife, a knife, a chopping knife.
431
And I use this to chop carrots or apples or whatever.
432
This on the other hand is a butter knife.
433
I do not use it exclusively for butter.
434
It's not sharp really at all but I would call that a butter knife.
435
All right we got more forks.
436
I'm going to turn up the water, get a little bit more soap on my sponge here
437
and I don't know if you can see this glorious work I'm doing.
438
All right I'm going to try to just get a little bit of this debris off of these plates, set them here.
439
Here we have some cute kids silverware.
440
So you might hear this called cutlery in real life.
441
I have never heard someone say cutlery.
442
It's silverware.
443
It is not made of silver.
444
It is just metal.
445
But we still call it silverware so anything
446
that you use to eat at the the table is silverware these are cat dishes
447
so we could say just like a pet dish this is
448
a cat dish we put our cat's food in it this one as well
449
we have another little plate the lid all right this is a lid to the tupperware
450
and there's some butter on here
451
but I'm not worried about it I can just put
452
that straight in the dishwasher
453
and it will be fine all right we got more straws more spoons a fork just a fork nothing fancy
454
we do have different sizes of spoons
455
so these are the three sizes of spoons in my house kind of bigger medium
456
and kids I don't know why we have different sizes of spoons
457
but they exist and we use them for I don't give the kids the big ones
458
because their mouths aren't big enough for that
459
but the kids use these two sizes it's just the way
460
it is I don't know do you have different size silverware in your house
461
that you don't know why you have for example this this fork
462
and this fork this is a these are both adult forks this one is shorter and this one is longer
463
why I don't know we just have them maybe I just
464
am not fancy enough to know why there are different sizes of silverware
465
because we don't have salad forks
466
and soup spoons well actually we do have soup spoons you will see
467
that in just a minute
468
but we don't use them exclusively for those purposes all right here as I was saying behold a soup spoon
469
so we bought these cute little spoons at the Asian market
470
because every Monday my family uh we call it miso Monday
471
and we eat miso soup and have uh kimchi and rice
472
and seaweed and we use these spoons for our miso I don't think it's a very American thing.
473
Growing up, my family had one of these spoons and it had a really cool design on it.
474
We have fragile ones as my kids call them, fragile ones with a little cat on them.
475
And then these plastic ones that the kids use.
476
We had one of these in my house and I thought it was the fanciest thing.
477
And I always wanted to use it for my breakfast cereal.
478
But now we just use them very normally.
479
All right, let's see what we've got left.
480
All right, I have, so this, um, this spoon, this is like a silicone serving.
481
stirring spoon.
482
It has some grease on it from the pork that I made yesterday.
483
So I'm going to wipe that off because I don't want that fat to go down the drain and clog it.
484
So I'll just wipe it off.
485
This is a paper towel, wipe it off with a paper towel, and then I'll throw this away later.
486
But this can go directly in the dishwasher.
487
The only thing that you have seen
488
that does not go in the dishwasher is this my nice knives I don't put in the dishwasher okay
489
and usually to be honest
490
when I'm not filming a video whenever we do the dishes
491
I hardly ever wipe off the dishes it's literally just five
492
maybe five minutes of quick rinse throw in the dishwasher quick rinse throw it in the dishwasher
493
because i'm not talking to somebody showing them every single thing
494
all right we have a couple more things couple more kid plates
495
one chopstick you might ask why does somebody have only one chopstick
496
why would you not have two we use these wooden chopsticks for stirring tea and drinks i don't know why,
497
but I love the, the wooden ones for that.
498
We have some metal Korean ones that we use for actually using chopsticks when we eat, but I don't have any of those that are dirty right now.
499
So you'll have to wait for another video to find out.
500
All right.
501
We have some, this is a, um, a regular bowl.
502
I would just call this a regular bowl.
503
My kids call it a fragile bowl it is fragile.
504
Uh, in fact, it has several cracks in it.
505
So there is a, um, a crack here.
506
There's a crack inside the bowl.
507
You probably can't see this very well.
508
Um, but so far it hasn't cracked in two.
509
So I'm just going to keep using it.
510
All right.
511
I have a lid.
512
Remember that, um, the jar that I showed you earlier, I have a lid that goes with it and another jar.
513
I'm gonna rinse that out.
514
Another jar here.
515
Another jar.
516
I use jars a lot to store food.
517
All right, another jar.
518
A few final items down here.
519
Two forks and a spoon.
520
A kid's bowl again.
521
Man, my kids go through
522
so many bowls it's unbelievable whenever they have a snack bowl
523
uh want to eat a couple nuts put it in a
524
bowl want to eat a cut up apple put it in a bowl
525
so many bowls all right one more fragile bowl
526
so usually at dinner my kids have the kid bowls they used to
527
and then my oldest son felt like he grew out of the kid bowls
528
and he wanted to start using a bigger bowl
529
so usually whenever we have soup my oldest son
530
and then my middle son
531
because he wants to do what the older guy does right they use fragile bowls with us
532
and it's just my baby who uses these kid bowls
533
but everybody uses kid bowls for snacks all right i want
534
to show you this cool thing right this is this is
535
called a crinkle cutter knife do you see how it's like wavy here it's not very sharp either
536
but you can use this to cut potatoes or carrots
537
and it leaves that cool design
538
and the cool thing is my kids use these all the time they're not very sharp
539
if you slam down on your finger maybe it would it would hurt you could cut yourself
540
but it's not as sharp as a knife
541
um and they like to cut potatoes cut potatoes
542
and carrots with this crinkle cutter knife I don't think that's a common thing to have in an American household
543
but here we are the final thing I want to show you is this.
544
Can you see this?
545
It is used for items like this.
546
So this is our cast iron glazed pan.
547
It is not exactly cast iron.
548
It's cast iron underneath here, but there is a glaze on it, which makes it easier for cleaning in my opinion.
549
So this has some eggs left on it
550
and what I need to do I cannot put this in the dishwasher bad news bears
551
if you put this in the dishwasher I'll put this um I will just fill this with some water
552
and let it soak
553
and then when it is done soaking I don't know like this evening
554
or something Dan will come in with this little scraper and we'll gently scrape the residue
555
off of the pan i love this thing i feel like it's this is like kind of gross right
556
stuff can get stuck in there we wash this all the time
557
and we replace it as well i'm gonna put this on my counter over here
558
um so we use this to scrape it off
559
and it's really easy to clean okay I have one other
560
thing I want to show you oh I'm going to wash my beloved cutting board
561
so in order to wash something like this I need to do it by hand
562
so we have I really what I've been showing you
563
so far I have some soap in my hand has not been really washing something by hand
564
because I didn't get anything actually clean.
565
I just took off the, I just rinsed them off.
566
So I was basically rinsing all the dishes.
567
I also use this with my cutting board to scrape off any pieces that might be stuck.
568
And then I simply rinse it off.
569
There we go.
570
all right um this I did wash by hand it is clean now
571
so I would say I washed my cutting board by hand
572
but these dishes I just rinsed them off um we will put them in the dishwasher in a second
573
and then I like to put it I have this I bought this thing to set a picture on
574
and the picture didn't fit.
575
And then I set my cutting board on it and thought, wow, this is genius.
576
So I usually set my cutting board on that in the sink to let it dry. And that's done.
577
We, I will put everything in the dishwasher now.
578
So let's go over to the dishwasher and you are going to be privy to the magic called loading the dishwasher.
579
That's what we call it
580
when we put dishes in the dishwasher um you are not
581
going to see my face very much you're just going to see the dishes but let's go
582
all right here we have the dishwasher I have two racks
583
that I can put things on and I'm just going to start loading it up
584
so we could just say I'm going to load the dishwasher
585
but if you use a phrasal verb like to load up it sounds more natural you might be picky
586
and try to put every piece of silverware in a special little slot, but I am not picky when it comes to the dishes.
587
I just throw them in.
588
You can put plates on the bottom.
589
I like to put all of the little stuff on the top and the bigger stuff on the bottom.
590
Some people are very picky about doing the dishes, but when you have to do it every day and there are a lot of dishes.
591
I have no energy to be picky about it.
592
Usually I do try to leave a little space though between them so that the water can
593
go all around it and get them clean.
594
Okay, I'll put that here.
595
By the end you just throw in dishes in any old spot, anywhere that they'll fit.
596
And I have the cat bowls, we will put in here as well.
597
There's water that comes from the bottom of the dishwasher and water that comes from the top.
598
So even if they're kind of piled on top of each other, it's okay.
599
All right, I like to put these in here.
600
And all of the silverware will just get basically tossed into the silverware spot.
601
I don't think so there's this little tray.
602
I don't think this has any special name except the silverware tray.
603
If you have heard this called something, let me know.
604
I have not really heard it called something in particular.
605
I just say put the silverware in the dishwasher
606
and whenever I open the dishwasher when it is finished
607
and unload it I have to grab the sharp knives quickly
608
because my daughter the moment the dishwasher opens it's like a carnival has opened.
609
She runs so excited.
610
She wants to see what's in here.
611
but of course she grabs the sharp knives first so um this steak knife I put in the dishwasher
612
um so I have to be careful that she doesn't grab stuff like that all right we've got some cups here
613
let's get those cups in
614
and i believe that's everything so the final step is we need to put soap
615
in the dishwasher i they have those little pods that you can put in here but
616
it's a lot cheaper just to use powder so i just use powder we'll put some in and close it up
617
and I will start it and turn it on. And that's it.
618
Yay.
619
Well, thanks so much for washing the dishes with me.
620
I hope that you were able to expand your vocabulary in a fun and interesting way.
621
