4
The story is called The Gift Basket.
5
Yeah!
6
Some of you know it, some of you don't know it, but after this, you're never gonna forget it.
7
All you have to know about this story is
8
that all the people involved have always been and will continue to be friends.
9
That being said, Martin and I...
10
All the good ones start like that.
11
Martin and I, are scheduled to perform in Northern California.
12
Usually we fly, but this particular day, I was having a problem with Southwest Airlines.
13
They wanted me to pay for an extra seat for someone who wasn't traveling with me.
14
Take your time, you'll figure it out.
15
Anyway, I tell Martina, I'm not paying for an extra seat.
16
Let's just drive.
17
It's six hours. So we headed north.
18
Three hours into the drive, we're passing through a city called fresno and as we're passing hey fresno 559 anyway
19
as we're passing through fresno we start seeing billboards off the side of the freeway that said
20

21
and showtime at the apollo comedian g riley
22
and i look at martin i go oh shoot g's in town
23

27
because what are you gonna say i said i'm gonna tell him
28
that i'm the front desk and that he just received a gift basket what's
29
so funny about a gift basket i said i'm gonna describe it over the phone
30
and i'm gonna make all the items
31
that are in this imaginary basket become items
32
that stereotypically a black person might like
33
but you're crazy i said i'll tell you what we got two hours to kill how
34
How about this?
35
How about we go to the supermarket
36
and we make an actual racist gift basket and we'll have it delivered and we'll wait outside to see what happens.
37
I said, are you down?
38
We go to a store and we start to design the sickest practical joke ever.
39
I get a shopping cart and I'm like, all right, we need a basket.
40
So I find one, I take out the grass, the plastic eggs and the chocolate rabbits and we start hitting the aisles.
41
First item I grab is a fried chicken about that big.
42
See how quick that laugh was?
43
There's a few black people in here like, mother f*er, this better be funny.
44
It's hysterical.
45
Let me just finish the story and then you can judge me in the parking lot.
46
So anyway, then
47
Martin hands me a miniature watermelon and I put it next to the fried chicken.
48
Here's where it gets interesting.
49
Employees of the store find out what we're doing and they start volunteering to help us finish the basket.
50
Half of the employees were black, which made it so much more accurate.
51
Aisle after aisle, aisle.
52
One guy was stocking a shelf.
53
He was an older white guy.
54
And we're like, sir, can you help us?
55
What do you need?
56
My buddy Martin
57
and I are trying to make this messed up racist gift basket for our black friend as a practical joke.
58
Can you think of something we can put in there?
59
Without even blinking an eye, the guy was like, You gotta have Kool -Aid.
60
It's at the end of the aisle on the right, malt, liquors, and XL over in the back of the store in the freezer section.
61
It's on sale two for one.
62
By the time we get to the register, all these different employees plus us came up with the basket that had fried chicken,
63
watermelon, Kool -Aid, grape soda, barbecue potato chips, sunflower seeds, an ebony magazine, a Chris Rock DVD called Bigger and Blacker,
64
Magnum condoms, Newport cigarettes, A rack of ribs, the recipe for cornbread.
65
It was getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.
66
Icing on the cake, we find a greeting card that's on clearance from Halloween,
67
and it has a picture of three ghosts on the cover wearing sheets.
68
I tear off the half that says, Happy Halloween, and on the back of the card, I write, Welcome to Fresno.
69
Love the Chamber of Commerce.
70
And we stick it to the basket.
71
We made it all nice and pretty and we haul ass to the hotel
72
We pull up
73
We walk in the basket is hot as hell
74
so I'm racing in I get inside and I put it on the counter as fast as I can bro.
75
It's too perfect
76
There's a black girl behind the front desk
77
As soon as I put the basket down I hear Is that chicken?
78
Ooh, let me see.
79
Hold on.
80
What is it?
81
Let me explain.
82
My name is Gabriel.
83
This is Martin.
84
We're a couple of comedians, and we're about to play a really crazy practical joke on
85
a friend of ours who's staying here tonight by the name of G.
86
Riley, who's also a comedian.
87
Oh, the one that's on the signs on the freeway.
88
Yeah, the one that's on the signs on the freeway.
89
So as a practical joke, we went to the store and we made this messed up racist gift basket.
90
That's why you can smell fried chicken.
91
And she was like, what?
92
You need Jesus, that's what you'll name.
93
Kiki, girl, you better hang up that phone.
94
You ain't gonna believe what I'm looking at over here, girl.
95
Listen, we think it would be hysterical if we could have you deliver the basket for us.
96
She lost it.
97
Oh, the hell you didn't.
98
I know you didn't just ask me to take that to a black man.
99
You are out your damn mind.
100
Oh, Lord!
101
Lord!
102
Give me the strength to not kill this big -ass Mexican over here, Lord.
103
Mm -mm.
104
Uh -uh.
105
Okay, look here, Nacho Libre.
106
I don't care who you are.
107
I am not doing it.
108
Hell, no. I'll give you 50 bucks.
109
Where that mother at?
110
We follow her to the hotel room.
111
She knocks on the door.
112
Martin and I hide by the elevator on the floor.
113
She knocks.
114
She opens the door, sees a beautiful black woman standing there with a gift basket.
115
This is for you, baby.
116
He says, thank you, closes the door.
117
She walks away and she sees us on the ground hiding, right?
118
And she's like, y 'all still going to hell.
119
We get up and we walk over to the door and we put our ear, listen, listen.
120
This is what we hear inside.
121
Woo!
122
Chicken!
123
Oh, Kool -Aid!
124
He's getting excited over every single item he's pulling out of the basket.
125
He gets to the greeting card.
126
What can the friends know?
127
Love the chamber of commas.
128
Hell yeah.
129
Then we feel him flipping the card over because his voice changed.
130
He's like, oh yeah, man, this is...
131
What the ?
132
Outside the door, we heard racist bastards.
133
When we heard racist bastards, we lost it.
134
Housekeeping is freaking out.
135
We're laughing, we're crying, we got boogers coming out.
136
We can't take it anymore.
137
We knock on the door.
138
He yells, who is it?
139
Too easy, chamber of commerce.
140
He rushes the door.
141
I put my finger on the people so we can't see who it is, right?
142
The knob starts to jiggle, then the door explodes open and he's like, what?
143
And he sees us and he's like, ah!
144
Ah!
145
What's up, G?
146
Man, y 'all give a brother heart attack.
147
Did you like your basket?
148
Man, that was messed up.
149
Did you like it?
150
Man, I love all that shit.
151
And now, ladies and gentlemen, a story that has been seven years in the making.
152
I would like for you to now hear, for the first time ever, the other side of that story.
153
Ladies and gentlemen, I flew him here to Hawaii so that he can share this with you.
154
Give it up for my friend, Mr. G.
155
Rylou!
156
I gotta be honest, I didn't know it was racist.
157
I thought it was lunch.
158
I thought it was lunch.
159
I didn't know it was racist until I got back to my neighborhood and the brothers in my neighborhood looked at me,
160
They say, man, I don't believe you let that Mexican guy do that to you, man.
161
That was messed up.
162
I know you got him back.
163
I said, what, buy him lunch?
164
I can't afford to buy that man lunch.
165
If I buy him lunch, he'll be getting me again.
166
But you gotta understand, it was a perfect set of circumstances when it happened.
167
Because I'm laying across the bed in the hotel.
168
I had never been to Fresno before.
169
And I wanted something to eat, and I didn't know where to go eat.
170
So I'm laying across the bed, and I'm saying to myself, where could I go eat?
171
I wish I had some food.
172
And all of a sudden, magically, there's a knock on the door
173
and a black girl shows up with a gift basket
174
and I took the gift basket
175
and I said they know how to treat their comedians up here in Fresno
176
and I'm walking to the bed and I can feel the heat
177
and I can smell the chicken from the gift basket
178
and I'm like oh this is cool because nobody smells chicken and thinks of racism right
179
I see the watermelon.
180
I'm like, oh, this is cool.
181
They know how to treat a comedian up in here.
182
I get to the card, and I look at the card, and I go, what the is going on?
183
I said, oh, my God, I'm working for the Ku Klux Klan.
184
And I really started to panic, because in my head, I'm saying to myself, is this for real?
185
Because there were billboards all over the city with my picture.
186
And I started thinking they were trying to scare me out of town.
187
So now I don't know what to do, right?
188
And I start trying to call a promoter, and the promoter's not answering the phone, and it's festering in my head,
189
and I'm nervous, and I'm pacing the room, and all of a sudden there's a knock on the door, right?
190
And I go, oh my God, they come to get me.
191
so i so i ease over to the door right
192
and i look through the people right
193
and all i see is a brown dot right
194
and i go i hear somebody out there because i hear the breathing right i hear
195
so this was about 60 pounds ago right
196
so i gotta look down up under the door right
197
but i said oh my god it gotta be about five or six of them out there
198
Oh my God.
199
So I figure like this.
200
I figure, okay, you know what?
201
If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen.
202
You know, if it's gonna happen, I'm gonna go down swinging, right?
203
So I put my best black face on.
204
You know, I tried to look mean.
205
You know, I look like this guy right here.
206
I look like that guy right there, right?
207
And I go, who is it?
208
And they go, Chamber of Commerce.
209
And I go, oh my God, the Chamber of Commerce is the Klu Klux Klan.
210
And I'm panicking, so I get to the door, right?
211
And I pull the door open, and when the door opens up, these guys are falling all over the hall laughing at me.
212
They're rolling all into the cleaning lady's car.
213
The cleaning lady didn't know what was going on, right?
214
She's scared to dust because she sees a black dude with no shirt like this, so she grabs the lemon pledge like it's pepper spray, right?
215
She's ready to get...
216
So everything, now that I realize it's a practical joke, everything calms down, because I remember how hungry I was.
217
I'm like, okay, cool.
218
Practical joke, right?
219
So I go in the bathroom to wash my hands.
220
While I'm in the bathroom washing my hands, I hear a commotion in the other room, right?
221
I go back in the other room.
222
They're going through the gift basket.
223
The maid is leaving with the watermelon.
224
Martina's drinking my 40 and this bastard is eating my chicken!
225
I'm outta here!
226
Thank you.
