We just got back from Lake Arrowhead.
3
Have you checked out those vlogs?
4
If you haven't, please check it out after watching this video.
5
Gabriel and I are feeling like we need to move our body after the long car ride.
6
So we are going to a track and we're going to run.
7
And it's been a really long time since I've ran on the track before.
8
And I'm curious to see what my mile is.
9
So what I mean by that is how long is it going to take me to run one mile on a track?
10
I haven't done this since high school.
11
Oh!
12
I'm being told to fasten my seatbelt.
13
So I'm going to click in my seatbelt here.
14
Okay.
15
Please like, subscribe, and share this video.
16
and also check out my new youtube channel it's for kids families
17
and super beginner english learners i'm curious
18
if you like to work out also let me know in the comments what is your favorite type of workout For me,
19
It depends on the day and how I'm feeling and how my body is feeling.
20
If I'm having a little bit of an anxious day where I have a lot going on in my mind
21
and also if I have a lot of tasks to do, I will do a more calm,
22
quiet workout like yoga, or i might take nari my dog for a long walk and stretch afterwards.
23
I go to the gym three times a week and at the gym they do various workouts.
24
Some days we do strength training only which means that we will lift pretty heavy weights and the
25
focus will either be upper body or lower body.
26
Other days I will do a cardio...
27
HIIT workout, which means high intensity interval training.
28
So that's what HIIT stands for.
29
In a cardio HIIT training, we would do cardio exercises.
30
We might run on a treadmill on an incline, or we might do battle ropes,
31
which are weighted ropes that you slam up and down with your arms.
32
of cardio exercises at the gym.
33
And what makes it hit is sometimes we will incorporate strength exercises as well to get our heart rate up.
34
Today, I'm feeling like I just want
35
little bit of movement maybe a lot of movement so I'm not going to do any strength training.
36
You just ran the red light.
37
It's okay.
38
I want this round.
39
Were you checking to see if I was watching you?
40
No one is around.
41
What's your favorite kind of workout?
42
Mine is HIIT as well.
43
So high intensity interval training.
44
And then my second favorite is cycling.
45
Why do you like cycling so much?
46
It's low impact, so it's easy on the body, easy on the knees and the joints.
47
And I get to see a lot of Los Angeles when I go on my adventures.
48
When you go for a bike ride, how far do you usually ride?
49
usually...
50
I ride once a week on Sunday and it's around 54 miles.
51
When did you learn how to ride a bike?
52
probably when I was...
53
five years old or four years old I think.
54
Very young.
55
How do you feel after you go on a long bike ride?
56
Sometimes a little overexerted because I burn so many calories and it's kind of like a shocker to my body.
57
So I feel very run down.
58
Yeah, it takes a lot out of me and I think it's because I do it once a week.
59
And I go, pretty far.
60
54 miles is pretty far.
61
But if I do anything like 20, 30, I feel fine the whole day.
62
I don't feel that overexertion.
63
Growing up, I played a few sports.
64
I started with playing soccer just on a club league or in a club league, I should say.
65
And I've dabbled in other sports for fun, but I never got serious.
66
When I say dabble, I mean I just tried it.
67
So I've tried lacrosse.
68
Lacrosse is a sport very popular on the East Coast.
69
Actually, my high school was number one in the nation for the boys lacrosse team.
70
There's a term in lacrosse called it's the fastest game on two feet.
71
I've also tried playing softball.
72
You know, I didn't really get too into sports when I was in high school because I chose to focus on music.
73
You can learn more about my music journey in one of my recent vlogs.
74
It's a storytime vlog, so please check that out.
75
more focused on my overall health and in LA there are
76
so many places where you can try different workouts
77
and it's fun we are approaching the college with the track where we're going to run
78
and this college is called Santa Monica College hopefully the track is
79
is open because it is a holiday weekend
80
and yeah I don't know I've never been here I don't know if it's open to the public I think we do...
81
Oh, we don't have to pay for parking.
82
We would have to pay if it was Monday through Friday through 9am to 6pm.
83
The parking meters here can be a little confusing.
84
I love this neighborhood.
85
Oh!
86
Here's the swimming pool Can you see?
87
So people are doing swim lessons and I think you can also pay maybe $10 to swim for the day.
88
When I went to this college,
89
I did not attend any sports games and I did not play sports.
90
I just came here to attend classes.
91
I did not finish.
92
college.
93
I Didn't even get an associate's degree, which is a two -year degree.
94
because I was very focused on my full -time job and I could not
95
handle coming to school full time as well as working full -time.
96
This is a beautiful track actually.
97
It's nice huh?
98
Yeah.
99
Show me a warm up.
100
Show me a warm up.
101
I don't warm up.
102
You don't warm up?
103
Why?
104
My warm up is to run.
105
Oh, he said my warm -up is the run.
106
Can you do that hurdle?
107
That's a hurdle.
108
This is actually a great place.
109
to teach English.
110
So over there is the stand.
111
Is it the stand or stands?
112
Stands.
113
Okay, so it's plural.
114
Over there are the stands.
115
Here's a flag with a flagpole.
116
and a goalpost for soccer and and there's Gabriel.
117
He is timing his run.
118
This is the track and If you run, four times around the track That is one mile.
119
I think this is a safe place for me to put my bag down, so I'm gonna go ahead and put my bag down.
120
That girl is practicing soccer.
121
Actually, football!
122
with her dad.
123
How sweet.
124
Maybe I will run with the camera.
125
Go Gabriel, go!
126
I'm out of breath.
127
Woohoo!
128
I am standing on the turf.
129
The field is outlined by spray paint this yellow gold spray paint.
130
In a sports game, if a player steps outside this yellow line, they are considered out of bounds,
131
which means that the game is paused and Sometimes there's a penalty for going out of bounds.
132
Sometimes They need to...
133
turn over the ball to the opposing team.
134
Look at the big tire.
135
What?
136
He used to play football and now he's doing some football drills.
137
He's walking slowly after his run, so now he's cooling down.
138
And now he's being silly again.
139
As expected, my one mile time. was not good.
140
It was under 10 minutes so that's good.
141
I think when I was in high school, I may have ran it in like 8 minutes.
142
I was never a strong runner, but I prefer sprinting.
143
I don't like long distance.
144
Here is a very large tire and I'm guessing this is used for strength training to flip over.
145
I am going to show you the difference between walking, jogging, running, and sprinting.
146
This walking.
147
I'm walking On the track.
148
The track is very soft, by the way.
149
It's super...
150
bouncy.
151
It feels good on my joints.
152
This is a jog.
153
- Okay.
154
A jog allows me to have a conversation with my jogging partner.
155
It's still comfortable.
156
It's not strenuous.
157
And now, I'm going to run and I probably can't talk much.
158
And that was kind of my sprinting, but now I'll sprint.
159
I can't sprint in these shoes.
160
I don't have proper running shoes on.
161
These are actually slip -ins.
162
Next time I will sprint with better running shoes.
163
Actually I need to buy running shoes.
164
What other exercise can I show?
165
How about grapevine?
166
This is a grapevine.
167
You can do this to warm up.
168
Opposite.
169
Sometimes at the gym, We do tennis runs, which is this.
170
It's kind of awkward.
171
What's this called?
172
They call it the ASKIP.
173
This is called the ace skip.
174
Although sometimes when I do it, I accidentally do...
175
is this a running man?
176
And these are jump squats.
177
These are jumping jacks.
178
This is a side lunge.
179
This is a forward lunge.
180
and a backward lunge and split squat.
181
You can do a jump split Gabriel is ordering our food.
182
in advance so that by the time we leave the track, we can go pick it up.
183
I think this cement square with the circle inside is for shot putting.
184
Oh!
185
Someone put their keys here.
186
Maybe it's one of these people.
187
Hopefully no one forgot their keys.
188
Hopefully no one lost their keys.
189
This is a sled.
190
and a lot of footballers or maybe just athletes in general, will...
191
put some weight on this sled and then they will push it.
192
It's a very difficult exercise I like to do this at the gym, but the sled that I use is just for one person.
193
That is a goalpost in football.
194
The kicker.
195
needs to kick the ball, through or in between the goalpost the Santa Monica mascot.
196
is called the Corsairs, But I have no idea what a Corsair is, actually.
197
This is the end zone.
198
And then each of these white lines signify the number of yards, right?
199
Each of these white lines signify the number of yards, five yards.
200
So these little ticks...
201
or little lines.
202
is one yard And then this long line is five yards.
203
So in between 20 and 30, - Thank you.
204
There are 10 ticks.
205
I'm gonna catch up To Gabriel.
206
What position did you play in football?
207
Running back.
208
Free safety.
209
I've watched many football games and I could never tell you the purpose of most of the positions.
210
Your phone dropped!
211
He dropped his phone while he was trying to play football with himself.
212
Well, that is the end of today's vlog.
213
because we need to go pick up food and I'm hungry.
214
I'd love to know what you learned.
215
So please let me know in the comments and I really appreciate all of your support, Like, subscribe, share and check out my new YouTube channel.

Why practice speaking with this video?

This engaging video provides a unique opportunity for English learners to practice speaking by following along with native-like experiences. The speaker invites viewers into their life, sharing personal narratives about workouts, trips, and daily routines. This context makes the content relatable, encouraging learners to immerse themselves in everyday English. Utilizing a shadowing technique, where you repeat what you hear in real-time, helps enhance your pronunciation and intonation. This method is especially beneficial for IELTS speaking practice, as it trains your ear for natural speech patterns and expressions while also improving fluency.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

In the transcript, several expressions and grammatical structures stand out, allowing learners to grasp everyday language usage:

  • "I'm curious to see..." - This phrase highlights curiosity and interest. It's a useful expression to express your thoughts and feelings.
  • "It depends on the day..." - This conditional structure is crucial for discussing varying situations. Understanding how to use this can help learners express flexibility in their activities.
  • "What is your favorite type of workout?" - This is a great example of how to form questions. Asking open-ended questions is essential in conversations and can encourage dialogue.
  • "I go to the gym three times a week." - Notice the present simple tense here, which is commonly used to talk about regular habits and routines.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As with any spoken content, certain words and phrases can be tricky to pronounce. Pay particular attention to the following:

  • HIIT - This abbreviation for "high intensity interval training" can be mispronounced. Practice saying it clearly as one syllable: "hit."
  • "Incline" - This word's vowel sound can cause confusion. It's pronounced /ˈɪn.klaɪn/, emphasizing the first syllable.
  • "Cardio" - Make sure to stress the first syllable: /ˈkɑr.di.oʊ/, to ensure clarity.
  • "Weighted ropes" - When pronouncing this phrase, emphasize the strength in "weighted" to convey the correct meaning.

By using a shadow speak approach and focusing on these grammatical structures and pronunciation tips, learners can enhance their English speaking skills effectively. Utilizing a shadowing app can complement your practice, helping you retain the nuances of spoken English, making you more confident in conversations.
