Hello and welcome back to the British English podcast.
17
I'm Charlie and today we're talking about travel.
18
Yeah, travel, a popular topic in the IELTS speaking exam.
19
But instead of focusing on part one or part two, today's episode is all about part three,
20
where you'll need to express opinions,
21
discuss broader ideas and analyse different aspects of a topic.
22
And if you're preparing for IELTS or just wanting to expand your ability to talk about travel in English,
23
this is going to be a great episode for you.
24
So let's get started, shall we?
25
This episode is brought to you by Coffee Mate.
26
After watching this season of the HBO's original series, The White Lotus, this is the tropical getaway I needed.
27
One more piña colada, please.
28
Hey, hey, you're not on mute.
29
Oh, I thought I was in paradise.
30
Turns out it was my coffee mate.
31
Coffee Mate Pina Colada and Thai iced coffee flavored creamers.
32
Inspired by the newest season of HBO's original series, The White Lotus.
33
For the love of coffee, try now.
34
Here at the Almond Joy Factory where tropical vibes abound, we use soft, fresh tasting coconut.
35
The crunchiest almonds and delicious chocolate candy.
36
Ah, but do you know what our most important ingredient is?
37
Sometimes you feel like a nut.
38
Sometimes you don't.
39
Almond Joy's got nuts and something even way better than that Yes,
40
Almond Joy is made with almonds and joy All right,
41
in the IELTS Speaking Part 3, the examiner asks you follow-up questions related to the topic from Part 2,
42
but with a focus on analysis, comparison and speculation.
43
Your answers should be well developed and supported by examples or reasoning.
44
So let's look at some common part three travel related questions and I'll provide you with some model answers for each one.
45
So the first question might be, how has travel changed over the past few decades?
46
That is, how has travel changed over the past few decades?
47
And a good response might be something like this.
48
Hmm.
49
Well, I think travel has changed drastically in the past few decades,
50
mainly due to advances in technology and lower costs.
51
In the past, international travel was seen as a luxury and only a small percentage of people could afford to go abroad.
52
Flights were expensive and information about destinations was limited to guidebooks.
53
However, nowadays, budget airlines, online booking platforms
54
and travel blogs have made it far easier for people to explore different parts of the world.
55
Additionally, the rise of remote work has allowed more people to travel for extended periods.
56
That said, mass tourism has also led to issues like over tourism and environmental damage,
57
which is definitely something to consider.
58
Okay, so I think that was a good response and would be given a good mark.
59
Probably, you know, could be a nine, could be a nine.
60
Definitely an eight, definitely an eight in my opinion. So why is that?
61
Well, it was well structured and the answer moves from past to present, showing clear organization.
62
It showed varied vocabulary, phrases like budget airlines, mass tourism and over tourism as well.
63
And then the grammar as well, like the use of present perfect.
64
For example, travel has changed drastically and conditional structures,
65
which, yeah, both of those improve the grammatical complexity of the answer.
66
Let's go on to question two now, which was what are the advantages and disadvantages of international tourism?
67
I'll say that again.
68
What are the advantages and disadvantages of international tourism?
69
And I might look them in the eye and say,
70
there are definitely positives and negatives when it comes to international tourism.
71
On the one hand, tourism boosts local economies, creates jobs and fosters cultural exchange.
72
Many countries, particularly those that rely heavily on tourism,
73
benefit greatly from visitors spending money on accommodation, food and activities.
74
On the other hand, tourism can also have negative consequences.
75
Overtourism can strain local infrastructure.
76
It could increase pollution and sometimes lead to the exploitation of local cultures.
77
For instance, cities like Venice or Barcelona have struggled with excessive crowds,
78
making daily life more difficult for residents.
79
So while tourism is important, sustainable travel practices are crucial to minimizing its negative impact.
80
OK, so that was the second answer to the second question.
81
So why was it good?
82
Well, it had a balanced discussion.
83
The response presented both advantages and disadvantages, showing critical thinking.
84
um it gave real world examples mentioning Venice and Barcelona
85
which adds authenticity and depth
86
and then I'd say the usage of phrases like on the one hand
87
and on the other hand help in regards to cohesiveness
88
because it just glues the pros and cons together to make a very clear argument and the examiner likes to see cohesiveness.
89
So yeah, it's good.
90
It's good.
91
All right.
92
The third question is, do you think people will travel more or less in the future?
93
I'll repeat that again, of course.
94
Do you think people will travel more or less in the future?
95
Again, I'd be sitting across the table and looking deep into the examiner's eyes and say,
96
that's an interesting question.
97
That is an interesting question.
98
Don't repeat that.
99
Don't say it twice.
100
Just say it once.
101
That's an interesting question.
102
You could try and say it a bit slower and more dramatically if you wanted a bit of time to think.
103
But yeah, that's an interesting question.
104
I think it really depends on different factors.
105
In the short term, global events like economic downturns or pandemics can reduce travel.
106
However, in the long term,
107
I believe people will continue to travel more and more due to globalization and the increasing ease of transportation. But
108
that being said,
109
climate change might force us to rethink how we travel as people are becoming more aware of their carbon footprint.
110
So we might see a shift towards eco-friendly travel options such as train travel instead of short haul flights.
111
governments may also introduce stricter regulations on tourism to protect the environment
112
so while I think travel will remain popular the way we travel might change significantly
113
okay again why why was that good well or why did I think
114
that was good that's uh let's say it like that
115
so i used some phrases
116
that uh we would class as like hedging language um this is like it really depends
117
and we might see these phrases help you um demonstrate the ability to discuss uncertainty
118
so instead of saying oh don't know you're using sort of academic
119
or intellectual language to show that there's uncertainty in the answer.
120
There's no certainty.
121
We don't know.
122
We don't know.
123
But here's a way that we can describe our options of what the possibilities are going to look like.
124
It was, I would say it was also a strong answer because of the way that there was
125
future speculation the response effectively speculates on future travel habits
126
which yeah is directly answering the question you know do you think people travel more
127
or less in the future so I'm answering the question basically and then there were smooth transitions between different ideas,
128
making it easy to follow, and that scores highly in coherence for the examiner.
129
So yeah, there we go.
130
Those three questions and answers.
131
Let's go over some tips though that will help you in part three of the IELTS speaking exam.
132

133

153
Void where prohibited.
154
My first tip would be to expand your answers.
155
Avoid giving short responses.
156
So instead, explain your reasoning and provide examples to support your points.
157
You know how I brought up Venice and Barcelona.
158
That's providing an example to support my point.
159
The next tip I would say is to use a variety of tenses.
160
It's easier said than done or it's easier thought than said.
161
Can I say that?
162
Notice how I used past, present and future tenses in my answers.
163
So, yeah, showing a good range of grammar structures will boost your score.
164
Another tip might be to express opinions really,
165
really clearly and use phrases to support this or just show how you're clearly showing your opinion.
166
So like, in my opinion, or I strongly believe that blah, blah, blah.
167
Or the other one that I mentioned on the one hand
168
and then on the other hand so yeah using these phrases to express your opinions clearly
169
all right another tip i could say is to um compare
170
and contrast so examiners love when you discuss different perspectives
171
so use comparative structures like um compared to the past travel is much more accessible today
172
and then another one was while some people prefer adventure travel
173
and then another one could be uh while some people like this others like that So while some people prefer adventure travel,
174
others enjoy relaxing beach holidays.
175
So while some people like this, others like that.
176
Yeah, so compare and contrast.
177
All right, my final tip before I get onto the challenge for you today is to speculate about the future.
178
Because questions often require predictions.
179
So use phrases like, I imagine that in the future, blah, blah, blah.
180
Or it's likely that we will see, blah, blah, blah.
181
It's likely that we will see an increase in travel over the years.
182
Or I imagine that in the future, we will be restricted by our governments as to how we travel.
183
Hopefully not.
184
Hopefully not.
185
i don't know is that good is
186
that bad let me know let me know all right let's go on to the challenge
187
so it's time for you to practice try answering one of
188
the questions i discussed today take your time to expand on your ideas
189
and use some of the phrases we covered so the questions were how has travel changed over the years?
190
What are the benefits and drawbacks of tourism?
191
And do you think people will travel more or less in the future?
192
I changed the wording a little bit just to give you
193
a little bit of extra language to see how the questions could change slightly.
194
If you want the original, I'll say them now.
195
How has travel changed over the past few decades?
196
The second one was, what are the advantages and disadvantages of international tourism?
197
And then the third one was, do you think people will travel more or less in the future?
198
Okay, so maybe pause this episode here,
199
record yourself answering one of these questions on your phone using voice memos or whatever app you like to record yourself.
200
and if you can play it back and listen to your response
201
and try to compare it to my response and then also
202
if you can put on your examiner hat
203
and try to mark your answer think about what was good
204
and some areas that you might need to develop a little further all right that's all for today's episode.
205
I hope you found the model answers and tips helpful.

Here’s how: Step 1: Watch the video once to grasp the topic (travel changes, IELTS tips). Step 2: Play short clips (5-10 seconds) of Charlie’s model answers. Pause, then repeat, mimicking his tone and pace. Step 3: Focus on linking words like "mainly due to" and "drastically"—these make your speech flow. Step 4: Record yourself and compare to the video. Notice gaps in fluency or pronunciation. This shadow speak method builds confidence for IELTS and real-world conversations.
