2
Dying of a broken heart sounds like the ending of a sad love story,
3
but it actually happens.
4
The broken heart syndrome usually affects people who have received very bad news.
5
Broken heart syndrome is officially called Takasobo syndrome or TTS.
6
It involves the sudden weakening of heart muscles.
7
The signs of TTS are chest pain and shortness of breath.
8
Although rare, it can lead to heart attacks and death.
9
Recently, researchers discovered that even happy events can cause TTS.
10
Christian Templin and Yelena Gadry are with University Hospital Zurich.
11
For five years, they and a team of researchers tracked 1,750 cases of TTS across nine countries.
12
The team found that emotional shocks caused TTS in 485 of those 1,750 cases.
13
And within that group of 485,
14
a total of 20 people could be said to have suffered from happy heart syndrome.
15
The events that caused happy heart syndrome include a birthday party,
16
a surprise celebration, and the birth of a grandchild.
17
However, none of these cases of happy heart syndrome caused death.
18
Gadri and her team published their findings in the European Heart Journal.
19
They found that TTS affects mostly women.
20
About 95% of the patients in both the broken heart and happy heart groups are women.
21
Happy and sad life events are, of course, very different.
22
Further studies are needed to figure out if both kinds of TTS events share the same pathway in the central nervous system.

Practice Tips

To maximize your learning experience, utilize the shadowing technique while watching the video. Given the moderate speed of the narrator's speech, begin by listening to short phrases before repeating them out loud to improve English pronunciation. Start with the first few sentences, ensuring you mimic the intonations and rhythms of the speaker. This will help reinforce your understanding of how emotional content can affect speech delivery.

As you progress, attempt to shadow speech from the video in longer segments, gradually increasing your comfort level with the material. Pay attention to how the narrator articulates terms related to health and emotions, such as "chest pain" and "happy heart syndrome." By incorporating these specific phrases into your practice, you will not only enhance your vocabulary but also feel more confident discussing various emotional impacts on health—an excellent topic for IELTS speaking practice and general English conversations.

Lastly, consider recording your own shadowing practice. Listening to yourself will provide valuable feedback and help you pinpoint areas for improvement. With dedication, you will see significant progress in your speaking skills and a deeper understanding of how language can convey complex ideas surrounding emotional health.
