35
He hoped to acquire the newcomers.
36
It snowed that night.
37
In the morning the shepherd couldn't take his sheep out of his lodge.
38
Instead, he had to feed them inside.
39
He gave a small amount of wheat to his own sheep.
40
But he gave more of the food to the wild sheep.
41
He thought the extra wheat would discourage them from leaving.
42
It snowed for several days.
43
During that time, the shepherd's sheep ate very little.
44
The wild sheep, however, ate very well.
45
At last, the snow melted and they ventured outdoors.
46
As soon as he opened the door of his hut, the wild sheep started to run away.
47
Wait!
48
This is how you repay me?
49
After I treated you so kindly, why do you run away?
50
The shepherd asked.
51
His voice was full of hatred.
52
The wild sheep stopped and turned toward the shepherd.
53
We're leaving because you fed us better than your own sheep, one of the wild sheep replied.
54
You tried to deceive us with your ridiculous plan.
55
Yesterday you treated us kindly, but tomorrow you might be different.
56
If more wild sheep joined your herd, you would treat us as inferior sheep.
57
As the wild sheep ran away, the shepherd understood his offense.
58
He knew this awkward situation was his own fault.

He had not been a satisfactory caretaker.

68
That day, Mike walked home down an alley.
69
He found a bunch of wood boards next to a pine tree.
70
He thought to himself, I could build a decent sled from this.
71
If I let
72
Joe use it, he will be nicer to me and Jane.
73
He took the wood home.
74
Mike got an axe and cut the wood.
75
He used nails to make sure that the pieces were not loose.
76
As he worked, he bumped his elbow on the boards.
77
The painful sensation made him want to cry.
78
It was a hard chore, but he persisted.

He worked overnight.
80
By morning, the sled was finished.

Mike called Joe on the telephone.

Come over to my house right away.

85
Mike wanted him to come over.
86

87
You weren't kidding when you said those mean things.
88
But I'm not like you.
89
I just built this sled, and I'll let you ride it with me if you are nice.

Mike was so nice to him.

They were scared, so they ran away.

Tina looked for a place to hide.
102
She found a garden with flowers blooming.
103
Tina had a passion for flowers.
104
She decided to hide there.
105
She became sleepy and made a pillow with some leaves.
106
She whistled happily as she worked, and she fell asleep.

Would you like some dessert?

Tina said yes.
122
She was hungry, and she wasn't frightened anymore.
123
She took a bite of cake and relaxed.
124
How did you get to my garden?
125
Tina told Wilma how she got lost.
126
That's terrible.
127
Let us take you home.
128
Actually, I think that I want to stay with you, Tina said.
129
She wasn't scared of big people anymore.

Wilma and Tina lived happily ever after.

Trick or Treat Many different cultures have had traditions about the dead.
132
People in places like Ireland, China, Egypt, and Mexico believed that souls needed food.
133
They thought the food nourished them on their journey from cemeteries to heaven.
134
People had to put out good things for souls to eat.
135
However, if the food rotted or spoiled, the soul got mad.
136
The wicked soul might curse the family and make them starve during the winter.
137
In other places, people begged for food on a holiday that remembers the souls of dead saints.
138
People wore disguises with hoods that covered their faces.
139
If they did not get food, they played a trick on the home.
140
For this reason, the activity is known as trick -or -treating.
141
Shortly after people first began trick -or -treating, parents started sending their children to beg on that day.
142
Housewives gave the children food if they performed a song or a dance.
143
When people moved to America from all over the world, they brought this tradition with them.
144
Inhabitants of villages started trick -or -treating in the early 1900s.
145
In 1939, a children's publication acquainted the whole country with the tradition.
146
It became very popular.
147
Today, trick -or -treaters are not begging for food, and they are not scared of souls.
148
They just enjoy the thrill of dressing up like creatures and getting candy.
149
Ghosts and skeletons are favorite costumes.
150
But some children wear fancy disguises, like pirates.
151
They carry flashlights instead of fires.
152
In some places, children still perform songs or riddles to get candy.
153
But most of the time, they just say, trick or treat.
154
The Senator and the Worm A rich senator lived in a big house.
155
He had more money than anyone in his district.
156
One day, he was sitting on a chair listening to a radio broadcast.
157
As he listened to the news bulletin, a worm crawled from underneath the chair and onto his head.
158
His cook was in the kitchen stirring some spaghetti sauce.
159
Suddenly, a cry from the senator alerted him.
160
He ran to the rear of the house where the senator was sitting.
161
The cook looked and saw the worm.
162
He tried to console the senator.
163
I'll take it off right away, he said.
164
No, shouted the senator.
165
I want you to kill it.
166
But it's only a worm, the cook said.
167
Why should we execute it?
168
It hasn't committed a crime.
169
The senator could not injure the worm on his head.
170
Hurry, he shouted.
171
The cook looked through several drawers but found nothing.
172
Then he ran to the closet and took out a pipe.
173
He returned to the senator and lifted the pipe over his head.
174
He knew he couldn't just tap the worm.
175
He was going to hit it hard.
176
He grasped the pipe tightly.
177
What are you waiting for, said the senator.
178
Kill it.
179
The cook swung the pipe at the senator's head.
180
Oh, no, the worm said.
181
He's going to chop me in half.
182
It jumped off the senator's head.
183
There was a tremendous noise.
184
Ow!
185
cried the senator.
186
A bump rose upon his skull.
187
Meanwhile, the worm crawled outside.
188
That was close, said the worm.
189
Instead of being nice, he wanted to hurt me.
190
Now that man has a big bump on his head.

Patsy Ann was a brilliant dog and she was very unique.
194
She was deaf.
195
She couldn't bark either.
196
But she used all of her other senses to know when a ship was near.
197
Patsy Ann lived on the streets.
198
Her owners did not want her because she could not hear.
199
So they abandoned her.
200
She found refuge in a fancy hotel.
201
Guests rubbed her back and scratched her chin.
202
Many people gave her food.
203
She became quite overweight.
204
She became very famous.
205
Visitors to Alaska were enthusiastic about meeting her.
206
They brought presents for her.
207
They liked seeing her, and the feeling was mutual.
208
The mayor said, Patsy Ann should be called the town's greeter.
209
The people in town loved Patsy Ann too, even though she lived on the streets.
210
They were willing to fight to keep her.
211
A new law made all dogs wear a collar and get shots.
212
The mayor received many complaints.
213
People wanted Patsy Ann to be able to stay.
214
One ambitious sailor got people to help.
215
Together, they paid for Patsy Ann to go to the veterinarian.
216
She got her shots and collar.
217
She could stay.
218
When Patsy Ann died, everyone missed the town's loyal greeter.
219
So, the mayor hired someone to make a statue of Patsy Ann.
220
He restored the town's greeter.
221
Now, she sits at the dock forever, waiting for ships to come home.

The Anniversary Gift Joe was a carpenter.
223
He built houses in the Highlands.
224
Joe's wife Stella used a needle and thread to sew elegant clothing.
225
She only used beautiful fabric to make clothes.
226
Since they didn't have a lot of money, they lived in an old shed.
227
Water dripped in when it rained.
228
They had broken chairs instead of a couch.
229
But they had coal for heat and flour from the mill for bread.
230
Together, they trimmed the bushes to make their house look nice.
231
Joe and Stella were poor, but not ashamed.
232
They were happy.
233
Sometimes in the evening, they walked downtown.
234
They looked in store windows and dreamed.
235
Stella wanted a hairbrush with an ivory handle.
236
She pulled her hair upwards every day because she didn't have a brush to make it nice.
237
Joe wanted to fix his grandfather's watch.
238
For their anniversary, Stella wanted to get
239
Joe what he wanted.
240
But then she did the arithmetic.
241
It would take at least six months to save enough money.
242
Then she had an idea.
243
She cut off all of her hair and sold it.
244
Meanwhile, Joe knew that he could never fix his watch.
245
So he polished it and sold it.
246
He made enough to buy the brush.
247
On their anniversary, the door burst open.
248
Joe was excited to give
249
Stella his gift.
250
But first, Stella gave him the money to fix the watch.
251
When he saw his wife without any hair, he smiled.
252
I sold my watch to buy you something, Joe said.
253
He gave her the brush, and she laughed.
254
They were both willing to give up something very special to make each other happy.

Dalton vs. the Bully Dalton was a nice boy, but sometimes the other boys made fun of him because he was so tall and skinny.
256
Dalton's biggest problem was Mitch.
257
He was a bully who boasted about his strength.
258
He quarreled with the other boys.
259
Sometimes, if boys gave Mitch their lunch money, he would have mercy and leave them alone.
260
One day, the boys learned about a special middle school Olympics.
261
Their gym class was going to be in it.
262
Many kids were excited, but Dalton thought it sounded like torture.
263
That morning, Dalton ate plenty of carbohydrates for breakfast.
264
He entered the gym and looked at the dial on the clock.
265
It was time to begin.
266
The teacher asked if they were ready.
267
Everyone nodded, except Dalton.
268
I got stung by a bee.
269
I need to see the nurse, said Dalton.
270
He made it up so he wouldn't have to play.
271
I don't believe you.
272
Get ready to play, responded the coach.
273
First, they wrestled.
274
Then they jumped, crawled, and played other games.
275
But Mitch was dominant in every event.
276
They strained all morning to defeat him.
277
By lunch, they were sore.
278
Their entire bodies ailed them.
279
They thought about how to win.
280
They knew the last game of the day was volleyball.
281
Kids who used to be Dalton's rivals became his allies.
282
They wanted him to help them beat Mitch.
283
Dalton was going to be Mitch's opponent.
284
The game started.
285
Every time Mitch tried to hit the ball over the net, Dalton stopped it.
286
Finally, Mitch used all of his strength, but the ball bounced off
287
Dalton's hands and back into Mitch's face.
288
Finally, Mitch was defeated.

In fact, Grace reproduced every sound that Anna made.
295
She took her sister outside.
296
She put Grace in the wagon, but there was nowhere for them to go, so they went back inside.
297
Anna put the infant on the floor and went into her room.
298
But when she came back, Grace had vanished.
299
Anna looked everywhere, but she could not find her sister.
300
Maybe the baby had been kidnapped.
301
Where are you?
302
Anna called aloud.
303
The situation was becoming urgent.
304
She wanted to call her mom, but she didn't want her to think
305
Anna couldn't do the job.
306
Anna sat down.
307
What was she going to do?
308
But then, Anna heard something.
309
It was coming from her room.
310
Grace?
311
She got down on her knees and looked under the bed.
312
She could see
313
Grace's bald head.
314
Grace had followed
315
Anna into her room and crept under the bed.
316
What a relief!
317
Anna cried.
318
She picked up her sister and patted her on the head.
319
Her head was soft and had no wrinkles.
320
Grace was sucking on a thumb and looked tired.
321
So Anna wrapped her in a blanket and sang rhymes for her.
322
Then she put
323
Grace in bed for a nap.
324
After that afternoon, Anna knew that taking care of Grace was not an easy job.
325
It takes a lot of work to take care of a baby.

The ecosystem was now very abnormal.
333
Peter knew he was in the magic marsh.
334
Now he was tired and thirsty.
335
He was afraid.
336
Being lost in the marsh could be fatal.
337
When people entered it, they never came out.
338
At last he found a pond.
339
Flowers grew around it.
340
The blossoms smelled like the best perfume.
341
He felt relaxed, so he drank some water and fell asleep.
342
When he awoke, he saw an evil dwarf staring at him.
343
What are you doing here? it asked.
344
The dwarf spoke in a strange dialect.
345
I'm lost, said Peter.
346
Can you help me?
347
Yes, it said, but Peter didn't know it was dishonest.
348
The dwarf took an old manuscript from his pocket.
349
It was a magic map.
350
Just recite the words at the bottom, the dwarf explained.
351
It will show you how to get home.
352
Good, Peter said.
353
He was impatient and quickly grabbed the map.
354
He recited the magic words and a line appeared on the map.
355
He walked for many days but never left the marsh.
356
Finally, the map led him back to the pond.
357
He walked in a circle.
358
The dwarf was still there.
359
Here's a proverb for you to think about, it said.
360
When patience is lost, then so are you.

What is that?
366
It's a cone maker.
367
I built it from a kit.
368
You take flour from the barrel and put it in this pan, Uncle John said.
369
Then add water and sugar here and stir it so the sugar dissolves.
370
Next, you fasten down the beam.
371
Uncle John wanted to look casual, but he was excited.
372
He made a few swift motions and turned it on.
373
There was a puff of smoke, and then cones came out the other end.
374
Is it hard to use?
375
Sam asked.
376
On the contrary, it's easy to use.
377
Want to try?
378
Sam washed his hands with caution.
379
He made a deliberate attempt to keep germs out of the dough.
380
Soon, Sam had his first cone.
381
He smiled in triumph.
382
Uncle John tried to turn the machine off, but it just kept making cones.
383
Sam and Uncle John put them on the counter then on chairs.
384
Before long, cones scattered all over the floor.
385
They tried everything to stop it, but it wouldn't stop.

He didn't want the bullets to hit anyone.
402
He just wanted to scare people with the loud sound.

Finally, the people of Ocean Town decided that they had to get rid of Sheriff Dan.
404
With their understanding, the crowd sought to unify the town.
405
They marched to Dan's house.
406
He was startled by the sight when he ran to the door.

When he opened the door, the crowd jumped on him.

Dan yelled, Get your hands off of me!
410
I'll put you all in jail for the rest of your lives!

The crowd didn't listen.

Dan was so scared that he began to sweat.

The chef started to panic.

Would he like the food?
446
The Emperor loved the food.
447
After his departure, the chef was very proud and very thankful to his new friend, the apprentice.
448
Why Monkey Has No Home For five years there was a famine.
449
The farmers asked people to bless them and finally they had a good harvest.
450
Since there was now plenty of food, the pharaoh decided to have a party.
451
The party was a happy affair.
452
For five days they had a huge feast.
453
Monkey was very happy.
454
Because of the famine he was very slim.
455
He wanted to eat a lot of food.
456
When he arrived at the feast, hundreds of long tables were filled with food.
457
There were nuts, bowls of cereal, and ripe fruit.
458
He could also smell hot roasted meat cooking on the stove.
459
The assembly of animals was merry.
460
However, during the feast, Monkey thought of a scheme to exploit the pharaoh's kindness.
461
He decided to steal some of the food and then eat it at home.
462
All the animals were cheerful.
463
They didn't notice that
464
Monkey was hiding food.
465
After the feast, Monkey took the food to his house and ate it.
466
He repeated this routine every day for four days.
467
But on the fifth day, the pharaoh had a surprise.
468
He was going to give all the animals a home.
469
Monkey was very excited, but when he arrived at the pharaoh's home, he could not get through the door.
470
The diameter of his waist was wider than the doorway.
471
He was too fat.
472
Monkey asked the pharaoh to forgive him for his theft, but the pharaoh said no. Pardon?
473
asked the monkey.
474
He didn't understand why the pharaoh was being unkind.
475
Everybody else will have a home now, but not you.
476
Now you know that greed gets you nothing, explained the pharaoh.
477
Matthew Learns a Lesson Matthew was a sensible boy.
478
He always kept his room tidy and had a natural literary aptitude.
479
One day, he hoped to have a career in journalism.
480
The adolescent spent much of his time reading and liked having privacy.
481
But his quiet personality hindered his ability to make friends.
482
One day, Matthew went to the pharmacy to pick up some pills for his grandmother.
483
He saw some boys leaning against a pole outside.
484
One of the boys complimented Matthew.
485
I like your jacket.
486
Another boy asked, Do you want to go to Nate's restaurant?
487
Sure, Matthew said.
488
The boys walked to the restaurant.
489
They were going to have slices of pizza.
490
They ordered their food and drank soda with straws.
491
They ate until their bellies swelled up.
492
Matthew was having so much fun.
493
One of the boys said, Let's leave without paying.
494
Matthew didn't want to, but he presumed his new friends wouldn't like him if he didn't.
495
Suddenly, the waiter yelled, Stop!
496
The two other boys ran, leaving Matthew there alone.
497
Soon, the police arrived.
498
Leaving without paying for your meal is the same as stealing, said the police officer.
499
The restaurant wants justice.
500
So next week, you have to go to court and let a jury decide your punishment." When he went to court,
501
the judge asked, "'Do you have anything to say, Matthew?' He said, "'I feel sorrow for what I've done.
502
Now I know that real friends won't ask you to do something illegal.'" The jury then let him have his liberty,
503
but they made Matthew pick up trash as punishment.
504
Much to Matthew's surprise, he ended up meeting some new friends.
505
The Magic Cup Paul and John were brothers.
506
They fought all the time because they both wanted to be leaders of the agency they both worked at.
507
There was a superstition in their town about a magic cup.
508
People said the cup was in a volcano located far away.
509
Anyone who retrieved the cup would have their wish come true.
510
John and Paul both wanted to find it.
511
Then they could become the leader.
512
They both left to find the cup.
513
Before their trip, their mother said they should work together.
514
They dismissed that idea.
515
Even though their trips originated from the same house, each wanted to travel alone.
516
They were both miserable during the trip.
517
They had to navigate small boats across shallow rivers and climb difficult slopes.
518
Their journey spanned many days.
519
When they finally got close to the volcano, the ground began to vibrate and the volcano erupted.
520
Ash filled the sky and lava covered everything.
521
John climbed to the top of a hill to keep from getting burned.
522
A few moments later, his brother went up the same hill.
523
They were confined to the hill until the lava cooled down.
524
They talked about the things they had seen while wandering around the country.
525
They felt more sympathy and affection for each other than ever before.
526
They decided that fate had brought them together.
527
The next day they left to finish the remainder of the trip together.
528
Everything seemed much easier.
529
When they finally found the cup, they learned that it didn't make wishes come true.
530
It was only an ordinary cup.
531
But the trip to reach the cup taught them to work together and love each other.
532
The Night's Plan A town was fighting for their independence from another country.
533
Several rebels started a revolution.
534
However, they were afraid of an invasion from a lot of troops.
535
They didn't have enough warriors to stop them, so they asked a knight for help.
536
The knight made a plan.
537
A tall mountain was outside the town.
538
The road near the top was very narrow.
539
Cliffs rose on both sides of it.
540
We must trick the enemy.
541
They have to follow us up the mountain, the knight explained.
542
On the narrow path, only a few can attack us at one time.
543
The people agreed with the knight's plan.
544
The knight put on his armor, and the warriors got their spears.
545
When the enemy attacked, the knight and warriors acted as if they were afraid.
546
They quickly withdrew toward the mountain.
547
The enemy troops followed them up the steep path.
548
Soon, the enemy became tired.
549
At the summit, the knight and his troops stopped.
550
The enemy was close behind them, but now they were tired.
551
Also, only a few could attack because the path was narrow.
552
The knight and the warriors fought the enemy, but there were too many troops.
553
The knight was afraid.
554
If the warriors yielded the path to the enemy, the town would be lost.
555
A storm suddenly came over the mountain.
556
There was strong wind and rain.
557
Thunder boomed.
558
Lightning struck some trees near the enemy.
559
The trees blazed.
560
The flames scared the enemy, and they retreated.
561
They ran down the mountain, out of the town, and never returned.
562
The knight explained.
563
With a little luck, a good plan beats even a big army.
564
The Magic Pear Tree It was a cool morning, and the grass was covered in mist.
565
The market was full of people.
566
A mean farmer named Jack yelled, Pears for sale!
567
He sat on a bench, plotting how he could trick people.
568
Then an orphan came to his cart.
569
Can you spare a pear? she asked.
570
Jack felt rage.
571
He replied, You don't have any money!
572
Please, I haven't had supper in days.
573
No! shouted the farmer.
574
The orphan sighed.
575
However, a pregnant lady heard the dispute and confronted Jack.
576
Just give her a pear, she said.
577
Jack had no shame and said no. Finally, a man bought a pear for the girl.
578
The girl quickly ate it, but she saved the seed.
579
She wanted to get revenge.
580
She told Jack, I know a way to get hundreds of pears in one day.
581
I'll show you how.
582
He watched the girl dig a hole.
583
She dropped the seed into the ground.
584
Then she spread the dirt over it.
585
Watch closely, she said.
586
In a few minutes, a stem will grow.
587
It'll turn into a tree that's full of pears.
588
Jack stared at the dirt, but nothing happened.
589
The only objects there were a few daisies.
590
He looked for the girl, but she had snuck away.
591
Then he looked at his cart in horror.
592
It was empty.
593
He suddenly realized that the orphan had tricked him.
594
While Jack was waiting for the tree to grow, the people had taken the pears from his cart.
595
They all laughed while they were eating the tender fruit.
596
The farmer felt ashamed.
597
The incident taught him to be kinder.
598
Little Wolf and Mother Wolf Mother Wolf was a magnificent animal.
599
She had all the traits of a terrific hunter.
600
She was very strong and fast.
601
She knew how to hide and how to seize prey.
602
Mother Wolf was the forest's supreme creature.
603
Her skills were evident to all the other animals.
604
Mother Wolf lived in a den beneath a tree with her cub, Little Wolf.
605
At dawn, Little Wolf and Mother Wolf were eating breakfast.
606
Little Wolf looked sad.
607
Mother Wolf said, What is wrong, my cub?
608
Little Wolf said, I want to be big like you.
609
You can run and leap better than anyone.
610
You can howl so loudly.
611
Being big is a necessity, and I am so small, Mother Wolf said.
612
Don't be dissatisfied with your size.
613
Being small can be very helpful sometimes.
614
Just then, rain and hail began to fall.
615
The tree was hit by lightning.
616
It fell on the wolf's den.
617
Little Wolf was scared.
618
The wolves knew that escaping the den was vital.
619
Mother Wolf said, Little Wolf, I cannot move the heavy pile of branches, but you can escape with ease.
620
You can get out and find help.
621
Little Wolf crawled out of the den and called all the large animals for help.
622
They went to the den and pulled away the branches.
623
Mother Wolf came out and said, Thank you, Little Wolf.
624
You saved my life.
625
She softly squeezed
626
Little Wolf and kissed her.
627
Little Wolf smiled.
628
She said, Mother, this outcome has taught me a profound lesson.
629
Even though I'm small, I'm still important.
630
The Old Man with a Bump An old man had a large bump on his face.
631
He went to the best physician in town.
632
He gave the old man tragic news.
633
I can't do anything.
634
You'll have to get accustomed to it.
635
One day the old man went into the forest.
636
suddenly the light became dim it was going to rain
637
so he found a hollow tree to sit under it leaked a little but there was no other place he could wait
638
When the rain stopped, his joints felt stiff from sitting.
639
Suddenly, he heard a tune coming from far away.
640
Many fables said monsters lived in the forest.
641
No one could affirm that the stories were true, though.
642
Still, his instincts told him that there was something out there.
643
He walked farther into the forest.
644
Then he saw a fire glowing.
645
He was astonished to see a clan of monsters.
646
They were having a great feast and banging on drums.
647
He stood behind a tree spying on them.
648
Then the leader asked, Who's the best dancer here?
649
Me, the man yelled, coming from behind the tree.
650
He started to dance.
651
When he was finished, the leader said, I want you to dance every night.
652
In order to make sure you return, I'm going to keep something you love.
653
Please don't take my bump, he begged.
654
Can't sacrifice it.
655
It's good luck, he exclaimed, pointing at it for emphasis.
656
The monsters agreed that they had to take his bump.
657
After they did, the man stroked his face to make sure it was gone.
658
He had tricked them.
659
He never went back, and he never had to worry about his bump again.
660
The Circus Ben was unhappy.
661
He lived on a ranch near a small town, and he didn't have many friends.
662
Then one day, a messenger came to the ranch.
663
He showed the headline in the town newspaper.
664
The circus was coming to the town.
665
It even coincided with Ben's birthday.
666
Ben was very excited as his father steered the car through the town.
667
The circus couldn't accommodate all the people who wanted to see the show, but Ben had a ticket.
668
Ben peered at the activity around him.
669
He watched people of both genders dance all around.
670
They wore funny costumes, and their hair was dyed many different colors.
671
Also, tame tigers with stripes on their fur did tricks.
672
Outside, people could commission an informal portrait.
673
They posed in front of a funny picture while an artist quickly drew them.
674
Ben couldn't believe it.
675
He was happier than he had ever been before.
676
That day, Ben knew what he wanted to do.
677
He loved the circus to such an extent that he wanted to have his own circus when he grew older.
678
Seeing the circus was like a dose of medicine for him.
679
He wasn't unhappy anymore.
680
He felt special.
681
He inquired about what he needed to do to have his own circus.
682
He studied hard and learned about business.
683
Ben worked very hard, and one day he had his own circus.
684
It was a great circus.
685
People told him that he could be very rich, but he wasn't tempted by money.
686
He just wanted to make children happy.
687
He knew the circus had changed his life, and he wanted to do the same thing for others.
688
Lazy Hans Hans was lazy.
689
He seldom helped his mother with anything.
690
He didn't cook and he never mowed the lawn.
691
He didn't even shave.
692
He spent the daytime gambling with his mother's money.
693
One day his mother realized that her money was gone from her purse.
694
You're banned from my house, she shouted.
695
Don't come back until you've learned your lesson.
696
Hans went to live in the forest like an outlaw.
697
But it was cold and Hans couldn't find food.
698
He went to a cottage to ask for a meal.
699
An aborigine answered the door.
700
Can I stay here, please?
701
Hans asked.
702
You can stay if you work, the man replied.
703
Hans liked the prospect of food and warmth, so he agreed.
704
The man pointed to a field.
705
Take this rod and plant it over there.
706
I am a wizard, and this magic rod will bring us food.
707
The field was far away.
708
Hans knew it would be hard to walk there, so he just threw the rod behind the cottage and sat by the river.
709
When daylight faded, he returned to the cottage and went to sleep.
710
The next morning, the old man looked very fierce.
711
You didn't take the rod to the field, he shouted.
712
No, confessed Hans, it was too far.
713
Because of you, we have nothing to eat, replied the man.
714
Hans was terrified that the man would punish him.
715
So he ran home.
716
Mama, he cried, I'm desperate to come back.
717
His mother was cautious.
718
Do you promise to work, she asked.
719
Yes, said Hans, I'll never be lazy again.
720
Larry the Cow, Harry the Rooster, and Lester the Duck lived on a widow's farm.
721
They dreamed of playing music in a parade.
722
One day, the widow went to the lawn where her herd of cattle was grazing.
723
I'll eat him tomorrow, she said, pointing to Larry.
724
Larry wanted to flee, but he didn't have the nerve to go by himself.
725
Then his friends Lester and Harry showed him a poster.
726
It's for a parade in Bremen.
727
We'll go with you, and we can perform our symphony there," Lester said.
728
The animals put together a small bundle that held a drum, a flute, and a portable microphone.
729
Then they took their baggage and initiated their long journey.
730
They walked down a paved lane all day.
731
That night, they looked in the window of a house.
732
They saw a group of thieves.
733
They were eating a large dinner and telling stories about their greed and the people they stole from.
734
Lester was an optimist.
735
He said, I think we can scare them away.
736
Soon, the animals came up with a plan.
737
Harry flew inside and knocked over the lamp.
738
What was that?
739
screamed a thief as the bulb broke.
740
They could barely see now.
741
Then Larry stood on two feet, and Lester flew to the top of his head.
742
They looked very big.
743
All three of the animals made scary noises.
744
The thieves tried to hit the animals, but Harry flew over them and scratched them.
745
It's a phantom!
746
yelled one thief.
747
The thieves ran away.
748
The animals ate and rested.
749
The next morning, Larry said, Why go to Bremen?
750
We can stay here and make music.
751
And so they remained there and were quite happy.
752
How did Greenland get its name?
753
The nation of Greenland isn't very green.
754
The sun's rays don't shine there for three whole months.
755
As a result, it's covered with snow, ice, and frost.
756
Then how was the name derived?
757
It started with a Viking named Eric the Red.
758
Errik had many merits.
759
However, there was an underlying problem.
760
He got angry easily.
761
People were scared of him.
762
However, he was married to the niece of a very powerful man, so everybody tried to be nice to him.
763
One day Errik fought with his neighbor and killed him.
764
His consequent punishment was to leave Iceland.
765
Many stories circulated about a land west of Iceland, but only a fraction of the people in Iceland believed them.
766
Still, Erik wanted to find it.
767
Erik sailed toward the land via the Atlantic Ocean.
768
His marine knowledge was good, but the trip was hard.
769
Some of his men drowned.
770
Erik's lieutenant wanted to resign from his position.
771
Others thought about committing suicide.
772
Suddenly, Erik thought he saw something.
773
I don't believe it, said Erik.
774
It must be an illusion.
775
But it was no trick.
776
It was the new land.
777
Eric trembled in the cold polar air.
778
He saw that there was ice everywhere.
779
He realized that the ice could keep enemies out.
780
Not even the best navy could invade the new land.
781
He could start a new dynasty in his name.
782
But how could he convince people to live here?
783
I'll call it Greenland, he said.
784
Eric's plan worked.
785
Within In two years, over a thousand people moved to Greenland.
786
In the end, Greenland got its name all because of a trick.
787
Everyone is special.
788
When I was young, everything that went wrong in my house seemed to be my fault.
789
Once, my brothers tried to make cookies.
790
They blended flour and ginger and made a disgusting paste.
791
Then they tried to wash it down the drain, but it got all over the floor.
792
Later, my brothers said that I did it, and I had to wipe it up.
793
I worried that my parents liked them more than me.
794
One autumn day, I was sure I would make my parents proud.
795
I bought a model rocket.
796
After I put it together, I invited everybody to watch it.
797
I wanted my brothers to envy my technical knowledge.
798
I lit the fuse, but nothing happened.
799
Looks like your fireworks don't work.
800
I hope you kept the receipt so you can return them," my brother said.
801
It's not fireworks, I screamed.
802
They were making fun of me again.
803
I didn't know what went wrong.
804
I hadn't altered anything.
805
I quickly moved the wires on the bottom, hoping that would help.
806
Suddenly, the rocket flew up.
807
We stood aside as it curved through the lawn and ran straight into the mailbox.
808
Then the mailbox collapsed.
809
The rocket was crushed.
810
Embarrassed, I ran inside and hid.
811
A few minutes later, my mom asked, Are you okay?
812
I just wanted them to be jealous of me for once.
813
Now I see why you and Dad don't love me as much as them, I said.
814
That's not true, said my mom.
815
See my fingers?
816
Each one is different.
817
You kids are like my fingers.
818
All are different, but I love them all the same.
819
I embraced her.
820
Now I know that my parents love me just as much as my brothers.
821
Pizarro and the Inca Gold According to rumors, there's lots of precious gold hidden in the jungles of Peru.
822
It got there when the Spanish conquered parts of South America.
823
The Spanish noble, Francisco Pizarro, arrived in Peru in the 1500s.
824
He found a group of people called the Incas.
825
The Incas believed that their leader, Atahualpa, was both a king and a god.
826
But Pizarro didn't agree.
827
It is a sin for a man to think he is god, he said to Atahualpa.
828
Atahualpa thought Pizarro was insulting his heritage.
829
He thought the blonde Spanish men held prejudices against the Incas.
830
But Atahualpa was a kind man and didn't want to fight the Spaniards.
831
He said, If I give you a room full of gold, will you leave my country in peace?
832
Pizarro was suspicious.
833
He thought Atahualpa was exaggerating.
834
But a few days later, Pizarro returned to the Inca palace with his ambassadors.
835
He saw a room filled with stacks of gold.
836
There were golden necklaces, cups, plates, and vases.
837
It was a great spectacle.
838
He acknowledged that Atahualpa had told the truth.
839
But after seeing the gold, he wanted all of Peru's gold.
840
So he didn't leave the country.
841
The Spanish soldiers stayed in Peru and grabbed all the gold they could find.
842
But the Inca people tricked the Spaniards.
843
They mixed the gold with tin so that it was poor quality.
844
They gave this gold to the Spaniards.
845
Meanwhile, they hid the good gold.
846
They stuffed it into sacks and dragged it deep into the jungle.
847
The Spanish conquerors never found the gold.
848
People think it is still there today.
849
The Boy Who Saved the Town Marcus lived in a small suburb near the sea.
850
He was a stubborn boy, and he only cared about himself.
851
His father worked as a chemist for an institution and wanted Marcus to get a job there.
852
Instead, the boy delivered milk.
853
Each morning he took dairy products to the grocers.
854
One day, Marcus was jogging down the street with a gallon of milk to give to a merchant.
855
He didn't want to be late.
856
He ran down a path beside a large canal.
857
A wall there kept water from coming into the town during high tide.
858
But Marcus saw a small hole in the wall.
859
Marcus knew that if the wall broke, it would be a tragedy for the town.
860
At first, he hesitated.
861
He had to choose between helping himself and helping the town.
862
There was only one way to save the town.
863
It seemed crazy to him, but it was the only thing he could do.
864
He poked his finger into the hole.
865
This didn't fix the problem forever, but it did postpone the tragedy.
866
His finger ached.
867
He felt the chill of the Arctic water as it splashed him.
868
There was no one else around.
869
He knew he had to wait until the tide descended.
870
It was very difficult, but Marcus stayed there and saved the town.
871
Once the tide had descended, Marcus told everyone what happened.
872
A group of people went to the wall.
873
They saw the hole and fixed it.
874
Everyone was very happy with Marcus.
875

  • “th” की ध्वनियाँ: grandfather /ˈɡɹæn(d)ˌfɑðɚ/, thief /ˈθiːf/, grandmother /ˈɡɹæn(d)ˌmʌðɚ/, clothing /ˈkloʊðɪŋ/, thread /ˈθɹɛd/
  • “sh” और “zh” की ध्वनियाँ: sheep /ˈʃiːp/, chef /ʃɛf/, shepherd /ˈʃɛpəɹd/, sheriff /ˈʃɛɹɪf/, shout /ʃaʊt/
  • लंबे शब्द — बलाघात सही रखें: ridiculous /ɹɪˈdɪk.jə.ləs/, publication /ˌpʌblɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/, ordinary /ˈɔɹdɪnɛɹi/, institution /ˌɪn.stɪˈtʃuː.ʃən/, priority /pɹaɪˈɒɹɪti/

हिंदी भाषियों के लिए मुश्किल ध्वनियाँ:

  • /v/ और /w/ का फ़र्क़ — /v/ में ऊपर के दाँत निचले होंठ को छूते हैं, /w/ में होंठ गोल होते हैं: worm /wɝm/, warrior /ˈwɔɹi.ɚ/, meanwhile /ˈmiːnwaɪl/, volcano /vɑlˈkeɪ.noʊ/, swing /ˈswɪŋ/
  • /z/ — इसे “ज” (/dʒ/) न बनाएँ: lazy /ˈleɪ̯zi(ː)/, disguise /dɪsˈɡaɪz/, ease /iz/, visitor /ˈvɪzɪtɚ/
  • शब्द की शुरुआत में s + व्यंजन — पहले “इ” न जोड़ें: swing /ˈswɪŋ/, scratch /skɹæt͡ʃ/, scream /skɹiːm/, scare /skɛɚ/, steal /stiːl/
