1
One of the strongest pound-for-pound men in history didn't build his strength by lifting weights in a gym.
2
He instead built it in chains.
3
During World War I, Russian strongman Alexander's Ass was captured and thrown into an Austrian prison as a prisoner of war.
4
After repeated escape attempts, he was moved to solitary confinement with his wrists and ankles shackled in chains.
5
He began pulling on his chains with everything he had, and soon, to his shock and amazement, he found he had grown even stronger than he was before his imprisonment.
6
When he eventually moved back into the general prison population, he began pushing and pulling on the bars of his window at night, as he had previously done on his chains.
7
One night, he actually managed to rip one of the bars from the window, leading to his now legendary prison escape.
8
After the war, Zass went on to have an even more impressive strongman career than he did before.
9
He bent steel bars with his bare hands, carried horses on his shoulders, and caught steel balls fired from a cannon.
10
He also began teaching what he had learned, having been convinced that true strength lived not in the muscles but instead in the tendons.
11
This method of strength training became known as overcoming isometrics
12
and Alexander Zass is to this day known as the father of isometrics.
13
In the hundred plus years since Zass' escape, science has discovered a great deal about overcoming isometric exercise,
14
where the body pushes or pulls against an immovable object at at maximum force.
15
Overcoming isometrics has been found to greatly increase the strength
16
and structural integrity of tendons by triggering a complete remodeling of the collagen fibers.
17
This remodeling takes what is essentially a somewhat chaotic bundle of tendon fibers
18
and rebuilds them into a tightly aligned structure with regular cross-links that dramatically enhance both strength and stability.
19
The end result is a tendon that is far less likely to tear
20
and far more capable of transferring forces from the muscles to the skeletal structure.
21
Interestingly, this also helps produce another phenomenon Zass himself noted, the creation of high levels of strength without extra bulk.
22
This training has a long reputation for creating people who look moderately strong, but perform feats of strength seemingly well beyond their size.
23
Today, this is often comically referred to as skinny strong, and it's why overcoming isometrics has produced some of the most deceptively powerful humans in history.
24
Tendon strength, while representing a significant part of the power development of overcoming isometrics, is not the only factor at play.
25
There's much more happening, especially in the nervous system, but I'll get to that in just a moment.
26
But first, it's important to understand something else rather unique about overcoming isometrics.
27
Because there is no actual movement, there are almost no sheer forces on the joints, meaning they experience very little wear and tear.
28
And although the intensity of overcoming isometrics is high, the muscles don't lengthen under load, as is commonly seen in standard lifting.
29
That lengthened eccentric contraction is usually where most of the stress and damage in the muscle actually comes from.
30
If you remove it, soreness rarely develops and the muscles stay relatively fresh.
31
Now, both of these points are equally true of yielding isometrics, but here's where overcoming isometrics are quite different.
32
Whereas yielding isometrics are typically held for 30 to 60 seconds or longer, overcoming isometrics, because they are maximum effort,
33
have been found to be highly effective with sets of only 5 to 6 seconds.
34
This is a huge advantage for those on a time crunch, and these short load times have been found to produce strength adaptations comparable to maxing out in powerlifting,
35
but also incredibly low fatigue.
36
This also works great alongside standard strength practices because it removes the need to perform high intensity.
37
You don't have to lift heavy and exhaust yourself to gain max strength.
38
You can perform moderate intensity strength training with some overcoming isometric sets added in,
39
giving you the same level of strength stimulus as high load high intensity lifting without the same damage.
40
It's honestly a game changer for older athletes or anyone dealing with chronic joint issues, previous injuries, and accumulated years of wear and tear,
41
but who still want to continue to build high levels of strength.
42
Okay, now back to the skinny strong concept, basically strength that seems to exceed the size of the body.
43
When I was younger and still doing a lot of barbell lifting, I personally witnessed a friend break through a long time plateau
44
and blow past his personal training record on bench press because he spent roughly 6 seconds pushing against a wall beforehand.
45
This left a lasting impression on me and the science I've come across since then has helped to demystify what actually happened.
46
It's an effect known as neural priming
47
and it's one of the best ways to couple overcoming isometrics with dynamic strength training or power skills.
48
When you perform overcoming isometrics you are attempting to push or pull with absolute maximum effort against something that will not move.
49
It is a 100% effort exercise that requires genuinely aggressive intent just to perform correctly.
50
And when you exert everything you have against an immovable object, even for a few seconds, you activate nearly all of the available motor units in the working muscles.
51
Basically, the nervous system recruits every muscle fiber currently available and includes them in the contraction.
52
In fact, overcoming isometrics produces a motor unit activation nearly identical to a true 1 rep max in powerlifting.
53
But unlike maxing out, it carries far less injury risk, produces far less fatigue, and removes the threat of failing under a loaded bar entirely.
54
This combination of motor unit recruitment
55
and the collagen remodeling we covered earlier explains why overcoming isometrics has such a powerful reputation for maximizing pound for pound strength.
56
So now let's talk about how you can actually use this to your advantage.
57
Here's how neural priming works.
58
You first perform an overcoming isometric exercise to maximally activate the nervous system and fully recruit the motor units.
59
You then rest for a few minutes before performing another strength or power exercise targeting the same basic movement pattern.
60
The overcoming isometric creates an ideal window of effect of roughly 3 to 8 minutes after the set, in which the short-term nervous system fatigue is cleared,
61
but the nervous system still remains primed and firing at very high levels.
62
You are essentially piggybacking off the neural effects of the isometric to push your other lifts and exercises to new heights.
63
This technique has been repeatedly shown to increase strength and power output in the short term.
64
And with consistent use, it has been found to accelerate long-term strength and power gains as well.
65
And for those pursuing an all-out maximization of athletic performance, neuropriming is one of the most underutilized tools available.
66
Though I also don't want to make it seem like this is the only effective way to use overcoming isometrics.
67
Bruce Lee was a huge fan of overcoming isometrics
68
and he had great results experimenting with him as a standalone strength routine
69
that he performed alongside his conditioning and martial arts training.
70

71
Whether you're rebuilding from injury, training for longevity, or chasing maximum strength, it helps to take the guesswork out of the process.
72
The link is below and as always, thank you for supporting the channel.
73
So what do you actually need to get started with overcoming isometrics?
74
You simply need an immovable object to push or pull against.
75
Common options include pushing against walls, pulling on anchored ropes, or using a barbell immobilized in a rack.
76
There's also a simple device called an isochain, essentially a chain anchored to the floor with a handle that lets you easily set up a number of overcoming isometric exercises.
77
You can find isochains for sale online or you can build one yourself for under $30 or $40.
78
I personally built mine from some 2x6 boards, a chain, a pair of carabiners, and a handle, and it works perfectly.
79
Once you have your implement of choice, choose your exercises based on your goals and follow these three simple guidelines.
80
First, look for mid-range joint angles for general strength and tendon development purposes.
81
This is the safest and most productive starting point for most people and has the most general carryover.
82
If you have a specific plateau you're looking to break through in one of your dynamic lifts, match the joint angle of your isometric exercise to that sticking point.
83
Overcoming isometrics performed at that exact position will directly address the weakness and likely push you past a plateau.
84
And finally, for athletic performance, train the positions your sport demands.
85
A combat athlete, for example, might hold an isometric punch against a wall at the exact point of contact, directly hardening the strength and neural drive at that specific position.
86
As for workload and frequency, stick to two to four exercises per session performed one to four times per week.
87
Overcoming isometrics won't produce much muscular fatigue, but they are max effort and they do still tax the nervous system.
88
Respect that and your recovery will stay ahead of your training.
89
That's it for today.
90
Good luck in your training.

And until next time, keep moving, my friends.

Ecco come fare:

"Rip one of the bars from the window"), alza il tono per enfatizzare l'emozione.
