Luke here with the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel
2
and I'm up in the mountains of Alaska and the weather is trying to kill me.
3
I got hit with a serious winter snowstorm in the middle of September
4
and I'm having to seek shelter in a survival cabin to stay warm.
5
I'm cold and I'm wet but I'm having quite the adventure.
6
Well I've got good news and I've got bad news.
7
The bad news is that it's cold and wet and it's probably going to dump snow on me tonight.
8
The good news is I've got the trail all to myself.
9
So since I'm all by my lonesome I'm going to turn on my tracking on my Garmin InReach Mini
10
so my wife knows where I am.
11
All right first mile.
12
Now I've got a really good chance of seeing some ptarmigan
13
or grouse on the road and I love to hunt and eat those.
14
But I ended up not bringing my gun just because it was a lot of extra weight.
15
You know the surefire way to see birds is to not bring your gun.
16
The trail is starting to get narrow and mucky.
17
Check these out.
18
This is mountain ash.
19
So this is mountain ash or roan.
20
Never eaten these before.
21
Some people say that they're good.
22
Some people say they're poisonous.
23
Best information I can find is that the flesh is edible but the seeds will give you some discomfort.
24
Mountain ash is really common in this part of Alaska and it's a berry you can find pretty late in the season.
25
This right here is a willow.
26
In the wintertime willow is the primary food source for moose, ptarmigan, and hares.
27
It also has some medicinal properties.
28
The greenish yellow inner bark of a willow has aspirin in it.
29
It tastes just like biting into an aspirin pill.
30
But it's obviously not as potent as an aspirin pill, so you'd have to chew a lot of it to get the same dose.
31
But it's a pretty wretched way to get pain relief.
32
Uh oh.
33
Look at this.
34
That my friends is snow.
35
Oh boy.
36
Winter is coming.
37
Alright, two miles down.
38
I'm just barely starting to get that aspirin taste out of my mouth.
39
Mile number three.
40
My pants are getting wet.
41
I can start to feel it soak through right there.
42
I'm breaking the main rule of big boy survival.
43
Don't wet your pants.
44
Look at that water.
45
That is so clear.
46
Gorgeous.
47
There's mile number four.
48
Check out this beaver pond.
49
This is the beaver den.
50
It's hollow inside.
51
And there's usually like a little hole down in there where the beaver comes up underwater
52
and then he can hang out inside.
53
This right here is the beaver's food pile.
54
These are all willows that he's not often stored in front of his house for wintertime.
55
When ice covers the pond, he'll go down underneath the ice and grab food from underneath the ice and bring it into his den.
56
See this little slide right here where he scoots back and forth.
57
You can see this entire wall of mud.
58
That was all made by a beaver.
59
That's the beaver.
60
Sorry about that.
61
Got to watch my language.
62
I want to keep this family friendly.
63
Seeing more and more snow.
64
Slowly gaining elevation.
65
Mile number five.
66
Look at this.
67
It's a watermelon berry.
68
It's rare to find watermelon berries in the fall.
69
They're usually gone by the end of the summer.
70
Man, it's 33 degrees and raining out here.
71
I don't understand why I'm not seeing anybody else on this trail.
72
Oh, geez.
73
Just hit the 6-mile mark.
74
I got some blueberries
75
there's a bunch of crowberries some of them are kind of
76
red it's been such a cold wet year the berries aren't ripening properly they're not ripe yet
77
it's too bad because there's a ton of them
78
oh my fingers are getting numb I brought a pair of gloves with me
79
but I don't want them getting soaked on my first day Alright,
80
just did 7 miles.
81
Now for the hard part.
82
I gotta climb that thing.
83
Well, it's starting to properly snow on me.
84
My hands are so cold right now.
85
Need a little snack break.
86
Alright, we just completed 8 miles.
87
This is where I gotta be really careful.
88
My muscles are tired, I'm fatigued, and everything is slippery.
89
Just gotta take it nice and slow.
90
Unfortunately the path is getting covered up with snow and that's not making my life easier.
91
The snow is completely covered up the path, but that's okay, I know where I'm going.
92
Just need to follow this little stream.
93
The headwaters of this stream are in a saddle that'll get me over this mountain.
94
Oh, my battery just died.
95
My hands are so cold I had to use my teeth to get it out.
96
It's getting a bit much.
97
I need to find some shelter.
98
My hands get too cold.
99
I can't light my stove or set up my tent.
100
And I do all those real important things.
101
Oh, there's a ptarmigan right there.
102
That's a rock ptarmigan as opposed to a willow ptarmigan.
103
The rock tarmigan live up here in the rocky parts of the mountains.
104
They're a little smaller and they make a different sound.
105
Look, there's a tarmigan right there.
106
I knew I should have brought the .22.
107
Having to pick my way through these boulders is taking so much time.
108
I've got to be careful I don't fall down.
109
I am exhausted.
110
My limbs are numb.
111
It's slick.
112
It's getting dark.
113
It's really easy for me to take a bad fall here.
114
I've got to be careful.
115
I finally get to go downhill a little bit.
116
oh look at that there's a cabin oh how do i get down there i've never been
117
so glad to see shelter it's just in the nick of
118
time sun is gonna set here in less than an hour slow as fast fast as small
119
That one hurt a little bit.
120
They've got an outhouse.
121
Oh my goodness.
122
How do you get inside?
123
I am so cold.
124
So cold I had to use my teeth to undo the buckles on my backpack.
125
I need to get dry immediately.
126
This is a mountaineering cabin.
127
It's a shelter from the storms for people exploring the mountains here in Alaska.
128
It was built by volunteers from the Mountaineering Club of Alaska.
129
Just a whole bunches of odds and ends, equipment,
130
a whole bunch of the tools in there in here got a little table and chairs
131
mountaineering books and a map poker chips
132
and decks of cards trivia suit little kitchen area some pots
133
pans oh there's just a little bit of fuel in there that's a full can
134
don't pee in the outhouse got it there's a little ladder here in the loft Oh look at the little library there.
135
A little loft to sleep in.
136
Nice.
137
Got some old mats and stuff.
138
I am so cold.
139
I think I'm going to bust out my sleeping bag and get it set up in the loft
140
and hop inside for a little bit.
141
Well I'm glad I kept my gloves dry but I think it's time to use them.
142
I can't even get my fingers in those. so I've
143
got these adhesive body warmers.
144
I'm going to use these.
145
Man, I didn't think I was that cold how to get in here I'm just freezing.
146
When I was packing for this trip I had a nice little bag of hot chocolate and herbal teas.
147
is going to bring that along and uh i think i forgot it
148
because it's not in my bag so i just got a little hot water
149
and honey in a cup and i'm going to drink that because i am so cold
150
yep that's good enough i found my bag
151
of hot chocolate yay oh my bag is soaked let's see how bad it is
152
Oh geez.
153
Oh yeah my bag is pretty wet.
154
I hate the rain.
155
I hate it.
156
Hot water bottles in here.
157
Okay.
158
Alright, got some stretchy pants on.
159
Got these down booties.
160
They are wonderful.
161
I feel like I'm starting to not die.
162
I'm wearing every bit of dry clothing that I have
163
and I've got two water bottles in here and I'm snuggled up in my sleeping bag bag.
164
I'm super hungry and I want to cook some dinner, but I'm just going to sit in this bag until I feel warm.
165
Once my body feels nice and warm, then I'll go make dinner.
166
I'm going to eat a little snack while I sit here and warm up.
167
I got some smoked alligator gar from our trip to Louisiana.
168
Got some dates.
169
well it took a while but i'm feeling warm again my base layers
170
and underwear are still pretty wet but it's warm that's a lot better
171
but i think i need to make some dinner it is
172
getting really late oh it is cold in here all right we're gonna make some quesadillas oh it goes
173
so much better with your fiends fingers work pork chili verde we're gonna stuff inside okay smell you
174
i forgot to bring a plate but i found this one Dang it.
175
Just dropped my knife and busted the tip off it.
176
I really like this knife.
177
It's stuck together.
178
That's good.
179
Got a little can of salsa here.
180
Mmm, that's good.
181
Roast a little marshmallow here.
182
Got a little chocolate sauce.
183
Oh, that hits the spot.
184
It's going to get well below freezing tonight.
185
Hiked about 9.5 miles today and climbed 3,600 feet in elevation.
186
So we are way up in the mountains.
187
oh my pole propping the door closed the wind doesn't open it
188
but look at
189
that there is a proper pile of snow out there we got close to a foot on the ground
190
and we could get a lot more snow tonight we're gonna
191
reheat this bottle too i'm going to bed with piping hot bottles
192
i'll tell you what i wouldn't mind a little bit of hot chocolate too with marshmallow oh
193
it actually seems to dry me out pretty good i feel
194
a low drier just since i put this hot water bottle under my clothes mint hot chocolate that is good stuff
195
oh that was good i got my clothes hung up
196
and i'm hoping they'll dry a little bit before tomorrow morning
197
no i'm not holding out a lot of hope i think i'm gonna go hop into bed no sense
198
and run around here my stretchy pants
199
oh i can't tell you how much i've warmed up just by being drier
200
oh and having a little food in me doesn't hurt either
201
all right it's late and i'm exhausted i'm gonna see you guys in the morning
202
oh good morning i didn't sleep particularly well last night but i was warm
203
ended up having to take my jacket off it got too hot something i didn't think it was possible
204
when I went to bed.
205
You know, I wouldn't call that dry,
206
but it's not dripping wet.
207
Oh, they're so cold.
208
Oh, I'm terrified about putting those back on.
209
I think there's a shutter on that window.
210
If I go outside, I could open it up.
211
Look at this valley.
212
Oh, that's where we came down last night.
213
We've got this board all covered in nails.
214
That's to keep bears out.
215
Bears get real curious.
216
Man, I really need to use the bathroom.
217
I think I better go check out the outhouse.
218
many of these cabins are maintained by the mountaineering club of alaska they don't require any reservations
219
or fees they just ask that you be a dues-paying member
220
or if you get stuck in the weather
221
and it's an emergency you're more than welcome to use them too
222
but they're first come first serve and they can be quite popular in the summertime
223
when the weather's good if you guys want to learn more about these cabins
224
or donate to the mountaineering club of alaska I'll put a link in the video description below.
225
Let's see if we got a little more sunlight in here.
226
Ah, it's a little nicer.
227
We can admire that view a little bit now.
228
All right, I got some steel-cut oats here.
229
I'm going to make some good oatmeal.
230
Oh, alrighty.
231
Good hearty oatmeal with butter and brown sugar.
232
It's hard to beat.
233
Oh, it feels good to have hot food in me.
234
I filled up another hot water bottle.
235
This one is going to go to try to dry out my pants.
236
Well darn it, I think that's actually working.
237
Oh, you know, it's nice to just sit here and not be wet and cold.
238
Oh, I'm really trying to think hard about what to do next.
239
Originally, I was planning on spending three days hiking through the mountains, and I was going to go to the crash site of a B-29 bomber.
240
Last summer, I did a two-day hike to that crash site, and it was really cool, and I've wanted to go back ever since.
241
But to get there, you've got to go over two glaciers
242
and around this mountain and there's a big problem let me show you
243
if i want to go to the bomber crash site i've got to climb two
244
and a half thousand vertical feet up over that saddle
245
and there's a foot of ice and snow on those rocks
246
and it's been snowing on and off all morning
247
so there's a really good chance i could get caught in
248
another snowstorm the weather's definitely been a lot worse than i anticipated on this trip i was
249
so cold yesterday i really feel like i pressed my luck a little bit more than i like to do
250
and i'm thinking i just need to head back home
251
and i'm about 80 the way through my fuel i have just barely enough fuel to cook dinner tonight
252
that means no hot water bottles no hot drinks you know
253
and that's going to be really rough if i'm wet again
254
so i'm thinking the smart move is to hike the nine
255
and a half miles back through the snow and
256
if you guys want to see the crash site
257
and those other survival huts i'll put a link to my video from last summer in the video description below
258
but i think i need to start packing up and getting my gear ready
259
you know hot sports drink ain't bad pants are soaking wet pretty much everywhere except for where the bottles were
260
it's been a fun but challenging trip so far
261
but i think it's time to call it let's gotta lock this place up
262
gotta make sure we put my snow gators on these burton snow pants have built-in snow gators
263
I'd have two pounds of snow in each shoe
264
if it wasn't for those snow gators you know this place is beautiful
265
when it's not trying to kill you there's some ptarmigan tracks right there must be pretty fresh
266
because it was snowing this morning look at this
267
it's a snow spider now i know spiders can crawl into my mouth
268
while i'm sleeping in the snow cave there's something to be
269
afraid of in the winter time i found my trail this is the stream i was following yesterday oh
270
but look at that the sun's come out
271
and it is gorgeous look at this just makes you feel tiny doesn't it that sun coming off the snow is bright.
272
Now that I've pulled my sunglasses out, I've jinxed it.
273
It's gonna snow on me any minute now.
274
Oh, I lost my sunshine and it's starting to rain properly.
275
I'm glad I got off that mountain.
276
I bet it's snowing like the devil up there.
277
Three miles to go.
278
There you go.
279
One mile.
280
If I hurry up, I might make it to my car before my underwear gets wet.
281
Yay!
282
Well, keeping with the pattern of this trip, I am soaking wet and freezing cold.
283
But I made it back to the car.
284
And I feel pretty good about my decision to call it early.
285
But hopefully you guys enjoyed this video.
