1
Hello everyone, my name is Dylan and welcome to another British English listening exercise.
2
So today I'll be reading you an original short story called Love Me, Love Me Not by Nicola Prentice.
3
So this story is at an B2 to C1 level, so upper, intermediate.
4
However, it is very well written, so it's quite easy to follow.
5
All you need to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy.
6
Kate looked around the room at the other participants, 10 men and 10 women all around the same age.
7
Thank you for coming today and offering your time to help advance medicine.
8
LimeRen, the medicine we're testing, is in what we call the phase 4 stage,
9
which means previous human trials have shown us the drug is completely safe." Kate stopped paying attention.
10
She'd read the information the medical research company had sent her,
11
so she knew the vitamin tablets had already been approved for sale and that they were just fine -tuning now, not testing side effects.
12
She didn't know any of the other people in the group.
13
Presumably none of them had jobs either, or they wouldn't have signed up to a medical study to earn money.
14
But otherwise, it was impossible to know if she had anything in common with any of them.
15
She hoped so, or it was going to feel like a very long four days stuck in the hospital -like research centre.
16
Known side effects are that some people experience heightened emotions and psychological states as well as a feeling of general well -being.
17
The lead researcher finished off his presentation.
18
We'll be interviewing each of you and taking standard physical tests through the day and night.
19
So, if you can all sign the consent forms, we can get started.
20
Cade signed and dated her form without reading the information.
21
Hopefully, this was going to be the easiest money she ever made.
22
I hope the food's better than last time, said the guy sitting next to her as he handed in his form.
23
Kate smiled.
24
I'm Michael.
25
Kate, she said.
26
You've been here before, as often as they'll let me, he laughed.
27
Easiest money I ever made.
28
She smiled back, someone she had something in common with after all.
29
A few hours later, eating dinner and having taken her second dose of Lyme Wren that day,
30
Kate couldn't deny she felt extra relaxed.
31
Maybe it was the drug, or maybe it was just being in a place where nothing was expected of her.
32
There were books to read, films to watch, and even board games and puzzles.
33
It was nothing like her normal days,
34
sending job application after job application and going to stressful interviews that never led to a job.
35
She looked up and saw Michael smiling at her.
36
Fancy playing a board game? he asked.
37
His eyes were such a deep shade of brown, Kate thought.
38
She couldn't think why she hadn't noticed earlier.
39
To her annoyance, she felt her cheeks going red.
40
Sure, she replied.
41
I'm very competitive though, she warned.
42
Perfect, he said.
43
Me too.
44
Was it her imagination, or did his cheeks look a bit pink too?
45
For the next two days, Kate and Michael hung out all the time, playing games, chatting and watching films.
46
I feel as if I've known you for months, not days, she said.
47
She already knew he lived not far away, that he was a student studying for his PhD and
48
that he had dimples in his cheeks when he smiled
49
and a cute way of putting a pen behind his ear when he was reading.
50
She couldn't be completely certain, but she thought he seemed to be making sure he sat next to her for meals
51
and hung out with her whenever he could.
52
Or maybe she was the one who was always looking for him.
53
So, do you think you're feeling any side effects?
54
He asked her one evening.
55
They were sitting on the sofa watching a film, Michael's knee was almost touching her leg, and if his hand moved even a tiny bit,
56
it would be touching hers.
57
Her heart beat faster and all she could think about was closing the gap and feeling his skin touch hers.
58
She was blushing again.
59
She knew it.
60
Any what? she asked, forcing her mind back to the conversation.
61
These side effects of Lymerin that they told us about at the presentation, he said, moving his hand away.
62
Her skin immediately felt cold, as if the presence of his hand had been warming the air between them.
63
Oh, I was only half listening, she said.
64
We'd still get paid anyway though, right?
65
And then he did it.
66
He moved his hand so that it covered hers.
67
A warm feeling went all the way through her fingers and across her skin.
68
She turned her hand over and held his hand.
69
He smiled and leaned towards her slightly.
70
Can everyone line up for their evening dose of Lyme Ren, please?
71
called a nurse.
72
Michael dropped her hand and followed the rest of the group to the nurse's room.
73
Kate couldn't remember ever feeling so happy.
74
Thank you everyone for taking part in this trial.
75
You are now free to go, the lead researcher said the next morning as the trial ended, any side effects will wear off over the next few days.
76
Those of you who have experienced strong feelings, emotions, and happiness will find that the feelings lessen,
77
but we don't expect anyone to become depressed.
78
However, we will follow up with all of you in the next few days to make sure everything is fine.
79
We can have our first date now, Michael said to Kate.
80
Breakfast?
81
Over breakfast, they talked and talked.
82
Kate knew she was in love.
83
It was stupid, but it was true.
84
Michael said it first.
85
I can't believe I met you.
86
I've never felt like this about anyone before.
87
This does feel amazing, Kate said.
88
And then a quiet worry that she had been ignoring became too loud to ignore.
89
You don't think, what?
90
What if it's the lime wren making us feel like this?
91
What was it he said about heightened emotions?
92
There's only one way to find out, Michael said.
93
If you don't want to be my girlfriend anymore after a few days, will know it was just the limeroom.
94
She felt herself melt at the word girlfriend.
95
Maybe your side effects will wear off first.
96
Maybe, he laughed, but I don't think so.
97
This feels real to me.
98
Me too, she said.
99
Four months later.
100
Looking back a few months later, Kate had to admit nothing was ever going to be as perfect as those first days together,
101
eventually, real life had to interrupt.
102
She got a job a few days after the trial ended
103
and he went back to the library and his books and research projects.
104
It was the end of her money worries
105
but also the end of spending all day every day together and all the excitement of falling in love.
106
But still, they saw each other when they could and met each other's parents.
107
Everyone expected them to get married, and when he finally produced a ring and asked her to marry him, she felt that old excitement again.
108
Three years later.
109
You do it, Kate shouted.
110
She hated doing the weekly shopping.
111
Why couldn't he do it?
112
I will, but I can't go right now.
113
I'm sorry, Michael said quietly.
114
He never shouted, but sometimes Kate found his quiet patience irritating.
115
Fine, I'll go then, she said, slamming the door.
116
Kate felt as if these kind of arguments were happening more often.
117
As she walked around the supermarket, she thought about how they'd been before when they were in love.
118
Can it ever feel like that again?
119
She wondered.
120
Walking into the health section, she spotted a word she recognized on the shelves.
121
Lime Wren.
122
The vitamin's name reminded her of a time she was really crazy about Michael.
123
She picked up a box and put it in her basket.
124
When she got home, Michael was already in bed, so she ate dinner alone, taking her Lime Wren tablet with a big glass of water.
125
The next morning, she woke up early as usual, but instead of jumping straight in the shower, she joined Michael downstairs for breakfast.
126
Good morning, she said, feeling a sudden desire to kiss him on the cheek as she sat down next to him at the table.
127
He was eating in front of a big pile of books, looking cute with a pen behind his ear.
128
What are you working on?
129
I'm writing a grant application for my next research project, he said oh, good luck.
130
What's the project about?
131
After breakfast, she reflected on how nice it had been to see him talking about his passions.
132
She'd forgotten how cute his dimples were when he smiled, she thought.
133
Or maybe she hadn't seen him smile much recently.
134
Anyway, she decided to have breakfast with him every day since it had been such a lovely start to the day.
135
It couldn't hurt to make a bit of effort, could it?
136
Two years later.
137
The baby hadn't stopped crying for two hours, but now she was calm, her little face peacefully as she slept.
138
Kate sighed with annoyance.
139
Where was Michael?
140
She walked out of the bedroom angrily and went downstairs to find him filling bottles with milk for the baby.
141
Well done, Michael said.
142
That didn't sound easy.
143
No, she said angrily, it isn't.
144
You're doing an amazing job, he said.
145
Okay, so I've done all the laundry, made your lunch for later and arranged to come home early this afternoon so that you can have some time for yourself.
146
Kate managed to smile and say thank you.
147
He really was being very sweet, even if she was too tired to feel grateful or to be nice back.
148
As soon as he had left for work, she reached for the box of lime wren.
149
By the time he came home, even earlier than he'd promised, Kate's smile matched his smile at seeing her.
150
One year later.
151
Kate was putting clothes away while her daughter slept.
152
She picked up one of Michael's favourite jumpers and held the soft fabric next to her cheek.
153
She missed him and he had only been out an hour.
154
Putting it back, she noticed something hard underneath the rest of the jumpers in the drawer.
155
The something turned out to be boxes and boxes of Lime Wren.
156
She was shocked to see them, even though, by now, she took Lime Wren every day.
157
And every day she felt madly in love with her wonderful husband.
158
She thought of it as a quick way to those feelings she'd always had for Michael.
159
Everyone said marriage was hard work and she just didn't have the time
160
or energy to work at love as well as her part -time job and a young baby.
161
She found that when she took the tablets, she made more effort at all those small gestures that made their life together nice.
162
If he did something nice for her, she said thank you.
163
But most of all, she actually felt thankful.
164
She paid him compliments and noticed things about him.
165
She asked him about his day and remembered things that were important to him.
166
She'd seen nothing wrong with the shortcut.
167
Until now, that is.
168
Now she knew why he had always been so good at doing those same things for her.
169
It was all fake.
170
Instead of being all smiles when Michael got home, she was angry.
171
Clearly, the limerun only had a limited ability to make everything perfect.
172
Her rose -tinted glasses were definitely off now.
173
What are all these, she asked, pointing to the limerun packet she'd taken from the drawer and piled up on the kitchen table.
174
Michael moved closer to the boxes and tried to read the writing.
175
They're vitamins, aren't they?
176
Don't act as if you've no idea why I'm asking, said Kate.
177
Angry, he was acting innocent.
178
These boxes, she said, dramatically, pointing to the pile again, are our relationship.
179
Oh, he said.
180
It's Limerin.
181
Yes, it's Limerin, she said i know exactly what they are he looked confused
182
so why are you asking me what they are i remember
183
the name now you've said from the place we met right but i've not taken those for years
184
what i just i don't know it's better to get vitamins from fruit and vegetables isn't it he said
185
The medical trial company sent us a load of them years ago, but I put them away somewhere and forgot to throw them away.
186
We eat a balanced enough diet, so there's no need to take vitamins.
187
What about...
188
She felt her voice getting louder and louder, but also something made her feel a slight doubt as she planned the words.
189
It sounded ridiculous.
190
What about the falling in love part?
191
The side effects?
192
You were always so wonderful and perfect, the ideal husband, and now I know why.
193
Uh, thanks?
194
He laughed.
195
I know they told us there were some side effects, but we were just joking when we said we fell in love because of the tablets, weren't we?
196
Besides, he added, turning the box over in his hands.
197
They must have changed the ingredients or something, because it doesn't say anything on the box anywhere about side effects.
198
See?
199
He held it out for her to look.
200
Maybe they changed the recipe after we did that trial. Who knows?
201
He gave her a big hug.
202
The perfect husband is all natural.
203
Don't worry.
204
He went off upstairs to check on the baby, and then she heard him banging pots and pans in the kitchen as he started to make dinner.
205
She too examined the boxes and it was true.
206
There was nothing written on the box about side effects or even on the leaflet inside.
207
The tablets were just vitamins after all.
208
Lime Wren wasn't a shortcut to love and it never had been.
209
