6
Let's begin.
7
Before we discuss the components that pick up a solar farm, let us first discuss the basic concepts involved in a PV system.
8
Sunlight or solar radiation is the energy emitted from the sun.
9
It travels through the Earth's atmosphere before being absorbed by the photobotide cells
10
or simply PV cells and then converted into electrical energy.
11
The solar radiation at the top of Earth's atmosphere, also known as the solar constant, is approximately 1.367 kW per square meter.
12
However, as it passes through the Earth's atmosphere, it is reduced to about 1 kW per square meter.
13
Photovoltaic cells or PV cells are made from semiconducting material, mostly silicon-based, which are neither conductors nor insulators.
14
These materials conduct electricity under certain conditions.
15
A silicon-based PV cell conducts electricity when sunlight hits the surface due to impurities added to it.
16
This process is called doping.
17
The impurities allow electrons to move around once excited by the particle of the sunlight called photon, creating current, thus allowing the cell to conduct electricity.
18
PV cells connected in series make up the PV module.
19
Connecting identical PV cells in series will result in the same current output as a single cell, but the voltage output is the combined voltages of the individual cells.
20
Connecting more cells in series increases the power output of the PV module.
21
Due to the modular design of PV modules, it gives us flexibility in combining them to achieve our desired system design.
22
PV cells are connected in series to form a module, PV modules are connected in series to form a string,
23
and PV strings are connected in parallel to form an array.
24
For the strings, voltage is equal to the sum of the voltage outputs of the modules.
25
Current is equal to the smallest module current output.
26
For the array, voltage is equal to the lowest string voltage output, and current is the sum of the string's current output.
27
Module performance is affected by operating conditions.
28
Because operating conditions vary, a standard set of operating conditions needs to be utilized, which allows for performance comparison between different modules.
29
Two main sets of operating conditions have been established based on parameters like cell temperature, irradiance, air mass, and wind speed.
30
The first is the standard test conditions or STC.
31
Under international standards, all modules are tested following STC as follows.
32
Cell temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, irradiance of 1000 watts per square meter,
33
air mass of The second set of operating condition is the normal operating cell temperature or NOCT,
34
which most module manufacturers include in their data sheet and are quoted based on the following reference conditions.
35
Ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius
36
Irradiance of 800 watts per square meter Air mass of 1.5 And wind speed of 1 meter per second Now,
37
let's move on to the components that make up a utility-scale solar farm
38
The PV module is the basic component of the solar farm
39
This is the component that receives the solar energy from the sun and converts it into electrical energy.
40
There are two main types of PV module technology.
41
These are silicon crystalline cells and the thin film cells.
42
Silicon crystalline cells can be monocrystalline or polycrystalline.
43
String cables are used to connect PV modules to form a string.
44
It is made of UV-resistant, double-insulated copper or aluminum single-core cable.
45
They are usually rated at 1000 volts or 1500 volts.
46
Sometimes, it is required to connect two or more strings in parallel depending on design.
47
It is accomplished by connecting them through harness cables using Y connectors or something similar.
48
Once the PV modules are connected in series to form strings, these strings are connected in parallel to form arrays.
49
This parallel connection of strings is accomplished in a combiner box.
50
Combiner boxes must have enough inputs for all the arrays, with appropriately sized fuses, isolator, and surge protection devices.
51
Some combiner boxes have string current monitoring depending on the design.
52
Combiner boxes must be rated IP55 and UV stabilized to prevent overheating and minimize losses.
53
The output of the combiner box is then sent to the inverter via the DC feeder cable.
54
The DC feeder cables must be sized to carry the total current of the array
55
and should also account for the voltage drop from the combiner box to the inverter.
56
All the DC feeder cables from each of the combiner boxes
57
in the block are connected to the DC input of the inverter.
58
The inverter is the component of the PV system that receives all the DC power from the PV arrays.
59
It is where the conversion of power from direct current to alternating current happens.
60
The inverter used in utility-scale solar farms have maximum power point tracker, so that the PV modules or arrays operate at their maximum power point.
61
The inverters must be able to reference the grid voltage in order to connect to it and energize.
62
It is called grid-following inverters.
63
Inverters must also have anti-eyelanding protection, such that when the grid voltage or frequency goes out of range, the inverter must trip.
64
There are typically two types of transformers used in utility-scale solar farm.
65
One is the distribution transformer installed after each inverter to step
66
up the output voltage of the inverter to a level for transmission to some station.
67
The capacity of the distribution transformer can vary from 50 to 2500 kVA or even higher, depending on the design.
68
The high voltage side is typically up to 36 kV.
69
Liquid type transformers are used most of the time instead of dry type transformers because they dissipate heat more quickly and efficiently.
70
The second type is the substation transformer.
71
As the name implies, it is located in the substation.
72
and used to step up the voltage from the medium voltage to high voltage for transmission across long distances.
73
Substation transformer is characterized by the following.
74
Primary voltage is greater than 36 kV.
75
Capacity can vary from 2.5 MVA to more than 100 MVA.
76
Liquid cooling is used.
77
The Ringman unit or RMU distributes the medium voltage output of the distribution transformer to the collector system.
78
It has a common bus bar
79
which serves as the main connection point of each inverter station in the collector feeder and eventually to the MV switch gear.
80
It also contains disconnect switches, earth switches, protection relay, and circuit breaker
81
to allow for manual or remote isolation of parts of the feeder for maintenance or fault finding, as well as for protection of the transformer in cables.
82
AC cablings carry the power from the output of the inverter to the point of interconnection.
83
AC cables include the inverter cables that connect the AC side of the inverter to the distribution transformer,
84
the transformer cables that connect the distribution transformer to the RMU, the collector cables that connects all the inverter stations through the RMU,
85
the collector feeder cables that connects the first inverter station of the feeder to the MV switch gear,
86
And finally, the in-camera cables that connect the MV switchgear to the substation transformer.
87
The connection between the high-voltage side of the substation transformer is usually provided by the network service provider.
88
MV substation
89
The MV substation is where the power from the solar farm is transported through the collector feeders connected to the MV switchgear, and eventually delivered to the point of interconnection.
90
The main equipment in the MV substation include MV switch gear where the collector feeders are connected.
91
It has circuit breakers, relays and metering system among others.
92
110 volts DC systems to provide independent power supply to the critical systems like the protection system.
93
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition or SCADA It provides the means to monitor the status of the equipment in the solder farm,
94
as well as control the equipment in the farm remotely It also displays the parameters measured by the data acquisition system,
95
as well as the values of active power, reactive power, voltage, frequency, and power factor at the point of interconnection
96
Network and communications equipment that facilitates transfer of data from the instruments, control systems, and protection systems in the plant
97
Low voltage systems for lighting and small power
98
Fire alarm and vested systems for the early detection and annunciation in case of fire Power plant controller,
99
or PPC, controls the output of the solar farm exported to the grid Metering equipment such as power quality meters,
100
check meters, and revenue meters Aside from the major components mentioned,
101
there are other components that can be seen in a utility-scale solar farm These include
102
PV tracking system This may be single-axis or dual-axis tracking
103
This makes the PV array follow the position of the sun for optimal output
104
Data acquisition system or DAS or sometimes called meteorological stations,
105
consists of instruments for gathering and recording meteorological data which are essential for performance testing of the solar farm.
106
Some of the parameters measured include ambient temperature, wind speed, global horizontal irradiance or GHI,
107
plane of array irradiance or POA, albedo GHI, albedo POA, Soiling stations,
108
which consists of reference clean panel, soiled or dirty panel, module surface temperature sensors,
109
data lagers, etc. This allows quantifying the drop-in performance of solar farm due to soiling.
110
Auxiliary panel houses the low-voltage power supply, UPS, and network or communications equipment in the field.
111
Harmonic filters are also used in some solar farms if deemed necessary based on the harmonic study.
112
As the name implies, they block or absorb the harmonic distortions produced by the inverters during the DC to AC conversion.
113
And there you have the components that make a utility-scale solar farm.
114
When all these components are put together, it produces clean energy from the sun that can be used by consumers for their everyday use.
