7
Josie, what topic are we looking at today?
8
Well, Mark, today we're talking about when to use the verb Do.
9
And when to use the verb 'make'.
10
That sounds great.
11
Shall we get started?
12
Let's go.
13
Okay, Josie, is there a rule that we can follow?
14
about when we use make and when we use do.
15
Well, the difficult thing about make and do is that there aren't really many rules.
16
But there are two rules.
17
Two rules is good.
18
Two rules is enough.
19
First of all, We use make when we are creating or producing something.
20
Okay, can you give us an example of what that would be?
21
Yeah, so for example, we make dinner, We make breakfast, we make lunch, we make a coffee.
22
Okay, so tell me, what are you making for dinner this evening?
23
Hmm, good question.
24
I don't have any plans.
25
I think I'm going to make pasta for dinner this evening.
26
Nice.
27
I made a salad for my lunch today.
28
Oh, good.
29
Delicious.
30
So 'make' is then used when we're talking about creating something.
31
Perhaps food.
32
Exactly.
33
So usually we can see the thing that we have created or eat it in the case of food.
34
Okay, so what other things can we make, Josie?
35
Well, if you're a very creative person, maybe you make your own clothes.
36
I'm not very creative, so I don't make my own clothes.
37
Me neither.
38
I would love to, but I've never made any clothes.
39
I do like DIY.
40
Okay, so have you ever made any furniture?
41
Yes, I made this table. Did you?
42
Well done.
43
I bought this table from Ikea, then I made it, I built it.
44
Okay, I think that still counts.
45
Good.
46
So anything else we need to know about to make?
47
That's the only rule really, for make.
48
So we're something that we can see.
49
Okay, so is there a rule for "do"?
50
Yeah, so usually we use 'do' when we're talking about actions.
51
you For example, we do homework and we do housework.
52
Do you like doing housework?
53
Does anyone like doing housework?
54
I don't think so.
55
No. Just to remind our listeners, housework is work that you do in your house when you clean.
56
So for example, you do the laundry.
57
or you do the dishies.
58
Yes.
59
What other uses are there of 'do'?
60
When do we use 'do'?
61
Well, we use 'do' when we're talking about an action that is not specific.
62
So we often use 'do' with the words 'something' and 'something' anything and nothing.
63
Okay.
64
So did you do anything last night Josie?
65
Yes, I did something last night.
66
Are you going to tell us what it was?
67
And then obviously I should tell you.
68
I can say, yes, I went for dinner.
69
Okay.
70
I did the dishes and did more housework last night.
71
Fun.
72
So are there any other rules for do and make?
73
Unfortunately, not really.
74
So the best way to learn when to use these words is to learn the fixed expressions,
75
which include do and make.
76
Josie, would it be a good idea to look at 10 examples, 10 phrases?
77
which use do or make Definitely.
78
I think it's a good way to get them in your head.
79
Okay, let's look at five examples of 'to make' and then five examples of 'to do'.
80
So number one.
81
Number one: we make a mistake.
82
So when you're learning a language, you often make a mistake, but that's the best way to learn.
83
And we make friends.
84
When you're learning a language, you often make friends who speak that language.
85
Good.
86
We make a decision.
87
Thank you.
88
So yesterday I made a decision to do the housework last night.
89
Good.
90
We also make plans.
91
Because I did the housework last night, I'm making plans to go out for dinner tonight.
92
Good for you.
93
Finally, for make, we make a mess.
94
So if you spill some food in the kitchen, you make a mess.
95
You don't do a mess.
96
Absolutely.
97
Good.
98
So let's now look at do, examples with do.
99
Yeah, so we do our hair or our makeup.
100
I do my hair and makeup every morning.
101
We do an exam.
102
So when it comes to the end of a course, you do an exam to test what you've learned.
103
Good.
104
We do exercise.
105
It's very important to do exercise every day.
106
Good.
107
And on that note, we also do sport.
108
So those two are connected.
109
We also do the shopping.
110
I do the shopping regularly on a Saturday morning.
111
Good.
112
So you do the shopping, you go to the supermarket.
113
Exactly.
114
Good.
115
Is that ten?
116
We've got one more.
117
I think we also do research.
118
Yeah.
119
So it's interesting to do research on a topic that interests you.
120
Excellent.
121
Okay, so today we have looked at the verbs make and do.
122
We have seen that with make...
123
we use make when we create something.
124
That's right.
125
And we use do In particular situations when there is something or nothing or anything to do,
126
Yes, and when we're talking about an action.
127
An action.
128
Yeah.
129
Okay.
130
And then we also looked at 10 different examples where we either use 'make' or 'do'.
131
Of course there are many more fixed expressions with 'make' and 'do', so it's a good idea to do some research.
132
And that's how you make progress.
133
Absolutely.
134
We really hope you enjoyed this lesson.

  • "We use make when we are creating or producing something": La regola per "make" è semplice: si usa per creare o produrre qualcosa di tangibile (es. "make dinner", "make a coffee").
  • "I made this table. I bought it from Ikea, then I made it": Qui "made" significa "costruito", mostrando che il verbo non si limita solo alla cucina, ma anche a progetti fai-da-te.
  • "We use do when we're talking about actions": La regola per "do" è più ampia: si usa per azioni non specifiche (es. "do homework", "do sports").

Nell'audio, attenzione a:

  • "Make": La pronuncia corretta è /meɪk/, con la "a" lunga.
  • "Do": Si dice /duː/, non /doʊ/.
