1
First off, I don't believe that Son of Man is a divine title.
2
Second off, you mentioned Jesus forgiving sins and having the ability,
3
and you mentioned the power, right?
4
The power, the authority to forgive sins.
5
Let me ask you this.
6
Does Jesus inherently possess the authority to do anything,
7
or does he gain that authority from the Father?
8
And if the answer to that is yes,
9
does God need to be given authority,
10
or does God possess that inherently?
11
Jesus is eternally powerful.
12
That's why this chapter I reference speaks of the two powers in heaven.
13
Now, when you see anything about authority being seated or given,
14
it speaks to when Jesus Christ is here on this earth.
15
Because as you understand, Jesus Christ is fully God and he is fully man.
16
And so when the scripture speaks of God being given authority,
17
it's not speaking of it in the sense that he's being given authority as a divine being,
18
but it's speaking of his earthly ministry.
19
Okay, perfect but if you believe that Jesus is the Son who is also a divine person within the Trinity,
20
then what's the significance of the Father giving the authority and him having to receive it from the Father?
21
If he was a divine person who inherently possessed authority on his own,
22
and you obviously believe that Jesus had the hypostatic union,
23
he had the divine essence whilst he was a person.
24
If it's the case that he possessed the divine essence,
25
which inherently has authority, then there would be no need for him to receive authority from the Father
26
because he He already has the divine essence that possesses authority.
27
So to me, it just seems indicative of Jesus making it very clear
28
that he needs to receive things from the only true God,
29
who he also talks about in John 17,
30
verse 3, when he addresses the Father as the only true God.
31
So Jesus, obviously, according to you,
32
you believe that God is the Lord of all flesh and so on and so forth.
33
And if Jesus comes down and he humbles himself,
34
he receives the authority from the Father,
35
the power from the Father,
36
not because he's necessarily deficient,
37
but because he humbled himself.
38
There is no significance of him receiving that from the father
39
if he's capable of giving it to it Sorry giving it
40
to himself on his own by virtue of the divine essence
41
to me It kind of just seems like an evasion from the point
42
that is he needed to receive authority from the father He does nothing except
43
that the father gives him permission or the ability.
44
Why exactly is that?
45
He didn't need to receive authority Philippians 2 tells us
46
that Jesus being equal to God did not think of it as robbery,
47
but he made himself of no reputation He came in the appearance of man.
48
So he humbled himself in a way that would be relatable to his creation.
49
And in that humbled state,
50
he received authority as an old and a humble service to the father.
51
And I don't see a contradiction or issue with that.
52
Okay, what does it mean to be equal to God here?
53
Does it mean equal in divine essence or can it mean equal in some other sense?
54
Some other sense that is more paralleled to other passages within the New Testament.
55
What sense do you mean equal in?
56
What other sense besides divine essence could you be referring to?
57
Yeah, the sense in John 17 verses 20 through 23,
58
where Jesus says that the disciples are one with the Father in the same exact way
59
that he is one with the Father.
60
He says, let them be one.
