1
All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right.
2
Here we go.
3
Is it too?
4
I think it's fine.
5
Probably fine, right?
6
Probably fine.
7
Okay.
8
Hi, my name is Father Mike Schmitz and this is Essential Presents.
9
So, I don't know if you've ever been in a situation like this where
10
You were so sure that something was God's will and then you pursued it.
11
whether that was a major in college or that was a career path or that was a relationship,
12
or maybe even discernment in religious life or discernment oriented towards marriage.
13
And you were so
14
convinced you were so certain that this was what god wanted you to do
15
and then then it wasn't right then it didn't turn out
16
and sometimes i you know i hear from a lot of
17
people who say like i thought i was i was i
18
thought for sure this is what god wanted for me i thought for sure this was his path
19
and then it didn't work out you know the uh i didn't get the job
20
or um i didn't get accepted into the program
21
or the person broke up with me or the people in discernment
22
and formation they they said i wasn't i couldn't go on and continue formation whatever that thing is sometimes
23
We can be certain that something is God's will.
24
It turns out that it's not.
25
And it's really easy in those moments to second guess ourselves.
26
It's really easy in those moments actually even to get upset with God.
27
And so what do we do in those moments?
28
And so in order to kind of dive into this, I want to look at a couple different aspects of this, maybe even four things.
29
The first is the things we have to consider.
30
One is, that Well, God has made it very clear in some areas.
31
this is what I want, always do this, and this is what I don't want, never do this.
32
Like, you know, we know those things, the commandments, that kind of thing, teachings of the church.
33
There are some things that God always says, don't do this.
34
Don't commit murder.
35
Don't commit adultery, etc. down the line.
36
And there's some things God says, always do this, like always go to mass on Sunday and always have a prayer life.
37
And those those things we need to do.
38
Take care of the people around us.
39
A lot of our choices God lets us have the choice.
40
God lets us have the freedom to choose.
41
How are you going to live my commandments?
42
How are you going to live out my will in your life?
43
That God gives us, if he doesn't make it clear that here's what I want, in a lot of ways, I think what God is doing is he's saying, okay, go ahead and choose.
44
You know what?
45
My broadly speaking my will my perfect will for you
46
So now I'm giving you some freedom
47
and you have this freedom to be able to choose in the midst of my will
48
The direction you can go this way or
49
that way you can your major could be engineering your committee your major could be architecture Your major could be education.
50
It could be nursing You don't even have to go to
51
college like all of those things can fall under God's permissive will
52
and he doesn't necessarily have a a perfect will in those moments right it's kind of like that
53
so number one god gives us a lot of freedom to
54
choose our own now on those lines sometimes we don't like that why because we have choose God's perfect will,
55
if I choose God's will, then it'll be smooth sailing.
56
And if I...
57
it's up to me, then...
58
I don't have anyone else to blame except for myself.
59
So sometimes we really like the idea that if God's will is out there, it's this mysterious kind of a thing.
60
And if I pick the right thing, then things are going to be absolutely perfect.
61
Of course, that's never a guarantee.
62
God never promised that ever, ever, ever.
63
Did he ever promise that if we follow him and do exactly what he asks, that our life is going to be perfect?
64
In fact, it's the opposite.
65
Sirach chapter 2, verse 1 says, My son, when you come to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for trials.
66
Jesus himself says, In this world you will have trouble.
67
You will have trouble.
68
But take heart, I've overcome the world.
69
to say yes to God's will as it has as as he wills it, does not preserve us from pain.
70
And secondly, if it's my choice, then I have no one to blame.
71
I have no one to blame about myself and I can't just automatically blame God.
72
So that's the first thing.
73
You have some freedom.
74
Second thing is, okay, when it comes to discernment, I thought I discerned the right thing.
75
And it turns out it wasn't the right thing.
76
Well, we realize this.
77
We realize that our discernment can be wrong.
78
Like, yeah, but I was praying, I was talking to people, and I thought I was following God's will.
79
I was really striving after that.
80
Even in the midst of that, our discernment can be wrong.
81
I mean, think about this.
82
The history of the church is full of people who...
83
claimed heresies, right?
84
They thought this is absolutely, this is what the truth is.
85
And they had to be corrected by the church.
86
I mean, even for kind of a lot of the reformation, - Thank you.
87
That was led by what?
88
That was led by people who were praying, and people who said they were listening to God's voice, but they did exactly the wrong thing.
89
It took the unity of the church and now it's splintered into tens of thousands of different denominations.
90
And they did this while they were praying.
91
We can discern wrong.
92
We just know that.
93
If that can happen on a massive scale, like the division of the body of Christ, that can happen in my life too.
94
So number one, I have a lot of freedom.
95
Number two, I can discern wrong.
96
I can get it wrong.
97
Even if I'm praying number three, I This is important.
98
Just because things have not panned out how I wanted them to pan out, doesn't mean that this isn't part of God's will.
99
Just because the road is now marked by pain, or the road is now marked by failure, doesn't mean that this isn't part of God's will.
100
I mean, look at the life of Jesus himself.
101
Jesus did the Father's will perfectly And where did it lead him?
102
led him to a place of,
103
yes, incredible beauty and power and miracles and people accepting him and yet receiving him and being converted,
104
but it also was marked by rejection.
105
It was marked by betrayal.
106
It was marked by failure or apparent failure.
107
He was marked by torture and death.
108
So keep this in mind.
109
One of the criterion is not going to be, "This is clearly God's will because I've succeeded and because I have everything I want."
110
And this clearly can't be God's will because I failed and because it's hard and painful.
111
We recognize that When we come to serve the Lord, we have to prepare ourselves for trials.
112
And so keep that in mind.
113
But the fourth thing is this.
114
First thing, right, we have a lot of freedom.
115
Secondly, we can discern wrong.
116
Thirdly, so keep that humility.
117
Thirdly, The criterion for judging whether this was and discerned well or poorly is not failure or success.
118
But fourthly, It's possible that you discerned incredibly well.
119
And you said, I thought for sure that God wanted me to go down this road.
120
But now all of a sudden, there's a roadblock.
121
I thought for sure God wanted me to go down this road, but all of a sudden I'm being forced to down this alleyway, down this side street.
122
Who's to say
123
that God did not want you to start going down this road so that you can get to the roadblock.
124
Who's to say that God didn't want you to start going down this road
125
so that you could get to the side street?
126
Now, see, our problem is this.
127
Our problem is we thought that when God set me on this road, I knew the destination.
128
I thought when God set me on this road that I just said, oh, yeah, this is how it's going to be for the rest of...
129
my life or the rest of whatever the next foreseeable future is.
130
And God was like, no, no, no. I just wanted you to get on the road.
131
So you discern that completely correctly.
132
That was accurate.
133
You did discern well.
134
You said, here's a relationship.
135
I thought that this was the relationship for my whole life.
136
Yes, you might have, but maybe it was merely the relationship to get you to that next stage in life.
137
I thought this was the major that I was going to.
138
and get his career in this field, Maybe, but maybe it was just the beginning of getting you to the place where you got to make the next decision.
139
Again, every act, you know, life is not crockpot.
140
This is not crockpot Christianity where you kind of set it and forget it.
141
Mm -hmm.
142
God wants to be actively engaged in our lives.
143
And so we don't just say, okay, made this decision.
144
Now I'm on this track and I'm going to go until the end and how I see the end.
145
It could be, okay, I'm on the road, and I'm constantly, every day, waking up and saying, "Okay, God, here we go.
146
Okay, God, are we still on this road?
147
Are we taking a side street?
148
Are we on this road?
149
Are we taking a trail?
150
Are we on this road?
151
Are we doubling back?" "God, where do you want me to go today?" Now, it's not to be obsessive about this, but it is to be active, right?
152
It is to be cooperative with the Lord himself.
153
because It might be the case that you made the exact right decision.
154
that you discerned, completely accurately.
155
And God got you on that road and got you moving so that He could get you to this fork, so that He could get you to this roadblock, so that He could get you to this side road.
156
Because He has other places that you and I cannot even imagine.
157
where he wants you to go.
158
So don't give up discernment.
159
Don't give up discerning because what you thought it would be turns out to be something different.
160
Continue discerning, knowing that God, you're in the driver's seat.
161
I am...
162
here cooperating with you, and I will go wherever you lead me.
163
even if it's not exactly where I thought it would be.
164
Anyways, from all this here, this is my name is Father Mike.
165
God bless.
