1
I know that there are so many methods out there when it comes to improving your English speaking.
2
And I've already mentioned some of them.
3
You can learn vocabulary in chunks.
4
You can learn pronunciation techniques.
5
You can shadow.
6
You can read English books, listen to English podcasts, watch English TV shows, and even take English classes.
7
All of these things can help.
8
But there is only one thing that none of the above can really replace, which is practice, practice, and practice by yourself.
9
A year and a half ago, when I was about to have my very first baby girl, I came down to a decision to stop working and teaching English.
10
And it was the first time in almost 10 years that I wasn't teaching English at all.
11
And to be honest, I barely used English at that time.
12
So I wasn't speaking English to my baby girl because I wanted to raise her in Vietnamese.
13
And even when my husband is American, we actually didn't have a lot of time to sit down and chat during the day because he was super busy.
14
He would leave home very early and came home pretty late.
15
So basically, we just had around like 30 minutes every night to catch up.
16
And because he can understand Vietnamese really well, our chat would normally go down to something like I would speak Vietnamese
17
and he would speak English because that was what we felt really comfortable with.
18
So literally for around a year, I didn't really have to use English and I started noticing a big problem.
19
I started losing quite a lot of my vocabulary
20
and sometimes I got stuck in my head because I failed to find the right words to say.
21
I could feel like my English was going downhills.
22
I mean, it was getting way much weaker than before.
23
It just didn't feel as responsive as it used to be.
24
And that was definitely alarming to me because my career was all the time around English.
25
And I just knew that I had to practice again.
26
Whenever I have time for myself, I'll stand in front of the mirror and speak English about whatever for around like 15 minutes, sometimes half an hour, sometimes an hour.
27
And you know how crazy it is, right?
28
And when I talk to my husband, I'll try my best to stay in English longer instead of just automatically switching back to Vietnamese like I used to.
29
And of course, I've been coming back to teaching full time like you see now.
30
So there's one more thing I really want to share is that if you do want to improve your English,
31
you have to surround yourself with people who are better than you because you can learn how they put the words together.
32
You can learn the expression they use, but you would normally never use and you have to respond to them in real time.
33
So yes, a good teacher, a right method, a good learning environment can help you save a lot of time
34
and can help you find the right way to practice English.
35
But at the end of the day, nothing can do the practice for you.
36
So if you really want to become a better English speaker, you have to speak it out.
37
You have to open your mouth.
38
You have to train your muscle because the more you use it, the easier it becomes to use it again.
