Welcome to Gravitas Hub.
2
There is a moment in life when we begin to notice something uncomfortable.
3
Some things keep happening to us.
4
The same kind of conflict.
5
The same kind of disappointment.
6
The same kind of failure.
7
The same kind of relationship.
8
The same kind of struggle.
9
And eventually, we begin to ask Why does this keep happening to me?
10
We look outward for an answer.
11
We blame the people around us.
12
Our circumstances.
13
Our childhood.
14
Our luck.
15
The economy.
16
The timing.
17
The world.
18
Sometimes those things really do matter.
19
Life is not equally kind to everyone.
20
Some people begin with advantages.
21
Others begin with burdens they never chose.
22
James Allen does not deny this.
23
But he asks us to look somewhere deeper.
24
Not only at what happens to us, but at how we meet what happens to us.
25
And that brings us to the question of this chapter.
26
How do I meet life?
27
Because life will meet you first.
28
It will bring uncertainty.
29
Loss.
30
Opportunity.
31
rejection, success, failure, people you understand, and people you don't.
32
You cannot choose every event.
33
But Alan asks us to consider something more difficult.
34
What part of my life is being shaped by the way I think?
35
We often imagine circumstances as if they are separate from us.
36
Something outside.
37
Something fixed.
38
something that simply happens.
39
But our inner world is constantly interacting with the outer world.
40
A thought becomes an attitude.
41
An attitude influences a decision.
42
A decision creates an action.
43
An action produces a result.
44
And the result becomes part of the circumstances of our lives.
45
This process is usually so gradual that we don't see the connection.
46
A person thinks they are unlucky, so they become hesitant.
47
Because they are hesitant, they avoid opportunities.
48
Because they avoid opportunities, their world becomes smaller.
49
Then they look at that smaller world and say, see, nothing ever works for me.
50
The circumstance appears to prove the belief.
51
But the belief helped create the behavior that created the circumstance.
52
This is one of Alan's most challenging ideas.
53
Not because it tells us that we control everything.
54
But because it asks us to stop pretending that we control nothing.
55
There is a difference.
56
You may not control what someone says to you.
57
But you influence how you respond.
58
You may not control losing an opportunity.
59
But you influence what you do afterward.
60
You may not control where you began.
61
But you influence the direction in which you continue.
62
And this is where responsibility begins.
63
Not as blame. As power.
64
Because blame says.
65
This happened because of them.
66
Responsibility asks.
67
What can I do with what happened?
68
Those are very different questions.
69
Imagine two people facing the same setback.
70
One becomes bitter.
71
The other becomes thoughtful.
72
One says.
73
Life is against me.
74
the other asks what is this teaching me the event is the same
75
but the inner response is different
76
and over time those different responses create different lives this does not mean
77
that positive thinking magically changes reality alan's philosophy is deeper than
78
that he is not simply saying think good thoughts and everything will become good he is pointing toward character
79
the quality of your thoughts influences the quality of your actions
80
and the quality of your actions influences the direction of your life if your mind is constantly filled with fear
81
you may hesitate when courage is required
82
if it is filled with resentment you may interpret neutral events as personal attacks
83
if it is filled with impatience you may destroy things
84
that required time if it is filled with discipline you may continue long after motivation disappears
85
the outer world does not simply respond to what we wish it responds in part to what we repeatedly do
86
and repeated action comes from repeated thought this is why circumstances
87
can sometimes become mirrors not perfect mirrors not explanations for everything
88
but mirrors showing us patterns we may not have noticed look at the situations that repeatedly frustrate you not to accuse yourself
89
not to decide that everything is your fault
90
but to investigate what do i repeatedly expect how do i
91
usually react what do i tolerate what do i avoid what
92
do i keep choosing what kind of people do i continually become involved with what happens
93
when things do not go according to plan?
94
These questions can be uncomfortable.
95
Because responsibility removes some of the comfort of helplessness.
96
If everything is someone else's fault, then there is nothing you can do.
97
But if your thoughts, attitudes, and choices influence your life, then you have something to work with.
98
And that can be frightening.
99
Because responsibility means participation it means you are not merely watching your life happen you are involved in its direction
100
consider how a small thought can change an entire day you wake up expecting the day to go badly
101
a small inconvenience appears you interpret it as confirmation your mood changes you become impatient with someone.
102
They respond defensively.
103
Now the interaction becomes tense.
104
You leave the conversation thinking.
105
People are impossible.
106
But perhaps the day did not begin with the argument.
107
Perhaps it began with an expectation.
108
And that expectation shaped the way you interpreted what followed.
109
This happens constantly.
110
We don't experience reality in a completely neutral way.
111
We experience it through the lens of our mind.
112
Two people can enter the same room.
113
Hear the same words.
114
And leave with completely different experiences.
115
One feels insulted.
116
The other hears information.
117
One sees rejection.
118
The other sees redirection.
119
One sees an ending.
120
The other sees an opening.
121
The event matters. But interpretation matters too.
122
An interpretation influences response.
123
This is why responsibility does not mean controlling life.
124
It means becoming responsible for the part of life that belongs to you.
125
Your attention.
126
Your attitude.
127
Your interpretation.
128
Your choices.
129
Your effort.
130
Your response.
131
That is where your power lives.
132
And perhaps this is the deeper lesson behind Alan's philosophy of circumstances. Do not ask only.
133
Why is my life like this?
134
Ask.
135
what in me is helping to shape the way I live this life?
136
That question changes the direction of attention.
137
From accusation, to examination, from helplessness,
138
to responsibility, from waiting for life to change, to asking what you can change within yourself.
139
But there is another important distinction.
140
responsibility is not the same as guilt guilt looks backward
141
and says i should have been different responsibility looks forward
142
and says what will i do now
143
that difference can transform a person you may have spent years thinking in ways that weakened you you may have reacted poorly
144
You may have made choices you regret.
145
You may have allowed fear to make decisions for you.
146
But awareness creates a new possibility.
147
You can begin again.
148
Not by pretending the past did not happen.
149
But by refusing to let the past make every future decision for you.
150
This is where thought becomes practical when something goes wrong notice your first thought
151
when someone criticizes you notice your first reaction when someone succeeds notice what happens inside you
152
when an opportunity appears notice what fear says when failure arrives notice the story you tell yourself.
153
These moments reveal the mind.
154
And what they reveal can be changed.
155
Slowly.
156
Repeatedly.
157
Deliberately.
158
Because circumstances are not merely events.
159
They are also opportunities to discover who we are.
160
A difficult person can reveal impatience.
161
A setback can reveal fear.
162
Success can reveal pride.
163
Failure can reveal resilience. Or resentment.
164
Pressure can reveal what we have practiced in private.
165
And perhaps this is why life can become a teacher.
166
Not because every painful event has a hidden reason.
167
But because every event gives us a chance to respond.
168
And every response teaches us something about ourselves.
169
So when life does not go according to your plans.
170
Perhaps the question is not immediately how do i escape this
171
perhaps it is how do i meet this with fear with anger with bitterness with denial
172
or with clarity with patience with courage with discipline with With acceptance,
173
the circumstance may be outside your control, but your meeting with it is partly yours.
174
And that is responsibility, not the responsibility for everything that happens,
175
the responsibility for how you participate in what happens.
176
Because life will continue to present circumstances.
177
Some beautiful.
178
Some painful.
179
Some deserved.
180
Some completely unexpected.
181
You will not always get to choose the situation.
182
But you are continually practicing a way of meeting situations.
183
And that practice becomes character.
184
Which brings us back to where this series began.
185
Thought becomes character.
186
And character begins to influence action.
187
influences direction and direction gradually becomes circumstance not perfectly not mechanically
188
not overnight but through thousands of small interactions between what happens outside
189
and what happens within so perhaps tonight
190
when something goes wrong don't ask only who caused this ask how am i meeting this
191
when disappointment arrives watch yourself when success arrives
192
watch yourself when someone challenges you watch yourself and
193
when life gives you something you never asked for watch yourself
194
because somewhere in that response you may discover the person you are becoming
195
and perhaps the deepest freedom is not the freedom to control every circumstance
196
it is the freedom to choose your response and through
197
that response to influence the direction of your life you cannot command the world to become exactly what you want
198
but you can begin to govern the mind with
199
which you meet it and once you understand
200
that circumstances stop being only obstacles they become teachers they become mirrors they become opportunities to practice a different way of being.
201
So the question is no longer simply, why is this happening to me?
202
It becomes something quieter, and more powerful.
203
What will I become because of how I meet it?
204
That is responsibility, and that is where your part in the shaping of your life begins.
205
And I'll love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

  • What part of my life is being shaped by the way I think?(自分の人生のどの部分が思考の仕方によって形成されているのか?)
  • Not as blame. As power.(責任としてではなく、力として)
  • What is this teaching me?(これは私に何を教えてくれているのか?)
