1
Hey friends!
2
Welcome back to Daily English Talk, the channel where real English meets real life.
3
I love today's topic!
4
We are talking about taxis!
5
Lily.
6
The app said $17 .50.
7
What is happening right now?
8
Don't worry, Tom.
9
I'll handle this.
10
Yes!
11
And Tom, before we start...
12
Be honest, have you ever had a taxi disaster? Have I?
13
Oh, I have so many stories.
14
One time, I got in a taxi, I gave the driver my hotel name, and he said, "Where is that?" And I said, "I also don't know.
15
I just showed him a photo of the lobby." A photo of the lobby?
16
He recognized the curtains.
17
The curtains, Lily!
18
Okay, okay, okay.
19
So, that is exactly why today's video is so important.
20
By the end of this lesson, you will know every phrase you need, from calling a taxi on your phone, all the way to paying the driver.
21
And we are going to show you something really useful today: what to do
22
when a taxi driver tries to charge you more than the app price.
23
Has that ever happened to you, Tom?
24
It happened to me last month, and I didn't know what to say.
25
I just paid, like a very confused tourist.
26
Well, not anymore.
27
Today we fixed that.
28
Let's go.
29
Before the story begins, we have a question for you.
30
Listen carefully and find the answer inside our conversation today.
31
Here it is.
32
What phrase does Lilly use to show the driver the confirmed app price?
33
The answer is somewhere in our story.
34
When you find it, write it in the comments.
35
Even one sentence in English is great practice.
36
We read every single comment.
37
Every single one!
38
So don't be shy, write it down there.
39
Okay, are you ready for the story?
40
Let's go.
41
Lily!
42
We made it!
43
The airport!
44
We are here!
45
We are here!
46
Finally!
47
Okay, let's get our bags and find a taxi.
48
Oh, I see taxis outside.
49
Lots of them.
50
Let's just jump in one.
51
Tom, wait.
52
Don't just jump into any taxi.
53
Why not?
54
A taxi is a taxi, right?
55
Not always.
56
Some taxis outside airports have no meter.
57
They can charge you anything they want.
58
Anything?
59
That's why we use an app.
60
I already have one on my phone.
61
You open the app, you type in your destination, and the app shows you the exact price before you get in.
62
Before you even get in?
63
So you know the price already?
64
Exactly!
65
No surprises, no games.
66
The price is confirmed right here on the screen.
67
Okay, that is actually brilliant.
68
Show me.
69
Okay, so I type in our hotel, the Blue Harbor Hotel, and look, the app says the fare is $17 .50.
70
Fixed price.
71
Fixed!
72
I love that word.
73
Fixed.
74
The price cannot change.
75
not change okay a driver just accepted our request his name
76
is daniel he's two minutes away blue sedan what is a
77
sedan a sedan is a regular four -door car not an
78
suv not a van a normal car uh i knew
79
that i was testing you of course you were oh i see a blue car is that him the license Are you Daniel?
80
Yes, that's me.
81
Are you Lily?
82
Yes.
83
Hi, Daniel.
84
Thank you for coming so quickly. Of course.
85
The Blue Harbor Hotel, right?
86
That's right.
87
Can I put my suitcase in the trunk?
88
Absolutely.
89
Let me open it for you.
90
Lily, he's so nice.
91
I love this already.
92
Tom, get in the car.
93
Please make yourselves comfortable and don't forget your seatbelts. Of course.
94
Safety first.
95
you care about seat belts.
96
I always care about seat belts.
97
I'm a very responsible person.
98
Hey, Lily, how long does it take to get to the hotel?
99
The app says about 25 minutes, maybe a bit longer if there's traffic.
100
Traffic, the great enemy of every taxi ride.
101
Don't worry, I know a good route.
102
Not the main road.
103
There's congestion there.
104
I'll take the Riverside Road.
105
It's a little longer in distance, but usually faster.
106
Congestion.
107
What does that mean?
108
Congestion means a lot of traffic.
109
Too many cars on one road, like a traffic jam.
110
Oh, like when everyone is stuck and nobody moves.
111
Exactly.
112
Very good.
113
The Riverside Road is much smoother at this time of day.
114
Smoother?
115
Does that mean the road is soft?
116
No, no. Smoother means the journey is easier, less stopping and starting.
117
Aw, English is so poetic sometimes.
118
You're right about that.
119
Oh, look, Tom.
120
We're almost there.
121
I can see the hotel.
122
Oh, wow.
123
It's beautiful.
124
Look at that building.
125
Here we are, the Blue Harbor Hotel.
126
I'll stop right here.
127
Perfect.
128
Thank you so much, Daniel.
129
That was a smooth ride.
130
So, the total comes to $26.
131
Twenty -six?
132
I'm sorry, did you say $26?
133
Yes, $26.
134
The road was longer because of the detour and there was a surcharge for the airport pickup.
135
Lily?
136
The app said $17 .50.
137
What is happening right now?
138
Don't worry, Tom.
139
I'll handle this.
140
Daniel, I understand, but when we booked through the app, the confirmed price was $17 .50.
141
It's right here on the screen.
142
Can you see it?
143
Well, the app doesn't always account for the route I take.
144
I understand that, but the app price is a fixed fare.
145
It's confirmed before the write starts.
146
That's how the system works.
147
She is incredible.
148
Let me check my app.
149
Ah, yes, I see.
150
The confirmed fare is $17 .50.
151
I apologize for the confusion.
152
No problem at all.
153
Thank you for checking.
154
We really appreciate it.
155
Lily, that was amazing!
156
How did you stay so calm?
157
I just knew the facts.
158
When you know the facts, you don't need to be nervous.
159
Facts.
160
I need more facts in my life.
161
So, can I pay through the app or do you prefer card?
162
The app payment is fine, or you can tap your card here.
163
I'll pay through the app then.
164
Done.
165
You should get the notification now.
166
Got it.
167
Thank you very much.
168
Lily, should we give a tip?
169
I think so.
170
Daniel was a good driver.
171
He explained the route, he was polite, and he corrected the price when we showed him.
172
I agree.
173
Let's add a tip through the app.
174
There, I added three dollars.
175
Keep the change, Daniel.
176
Oh, that's very kind.
177
Thank you both so much.
178
I hope you enjoy your stay.
179
Thank you.
180
You were wonderful.
181
Goodbye.
182
Goodbye.
183
Have a great trip.
184
Okay.
185
Wow.
186
That was a lot.
187
Was it scary?
188
A little when the price was wrong, but you handled it so perfectly.
189
The key is, always check the app before you get in.
190
The confirmed price is your protection.
191
Confirmed price.
192
Protection.
193
Got it.
194
I'm writing that on my hand.
195
Please don't.
196
Let's go check in.
197
I'm exhausted.
198
like I learned so much today congestion fixed fare surcharge sedan and And you remembered all of them.
199
I'm impressed, Tom.
200
Don't be too impressed.
201
I still don't know what a curtain is in English.
202
Tom, curtain is an English word.
203
Oh, right.
204
Okay, let's go.
205
Okay, before vocabulary, let's look at one key grammar point from today's story. Which part?
206
Did you notice how Lily talked to the driver when the price was wrong?
207
She didn't shout.
208
She didn't and she used polite, clear English.
209
That's called polite correction.
210
In English, when something is wrong, we often say, "I understand, butโฆ" this shows you are respectful and confident at the same time.
211
For example, I understand the road was longer, but the confirmed app price is $17 .50.
212
Very calm, very clear, very powerful.
213
So the word "but" is like a magic word?
214
Kind of, yes.
215
You acknowledge the other person first, then you say your point.
216
It's polite and effective.
217
I acknowledge that this grammar lesson is great, but can we do vocabulary now?
218
See?
219
You used it perfectly.
220
Let's go.
221
Eight vocabulary words and phrases.
222
Let's break them down one by one.
223
A fixed fare is a price that does not change.
224
It is set before the ride begins.
225
When you book a taxi through an app, the price you see on the screen, that is the fixed fare.
226
The driver cannot charge more.
227
Example, the app shows a fixed fare of $17 .50.
228
Beautiful phrase.
229
Very useful.
230
Confirmed means agreed, accepted, official.
231
When the app shows your price and you press book, that price is confirmed.
232
Nobody can change it.
233
Lily said this to the driver: "The confirmed price is right here on my screen." Powerful, right?
234
A surcharge is an extra fee, an additional cost on top of the normal price.
235
The driver said there was a surcharge for the airport pickup.
236
That means extra money for starting at the airport.
237
Some surcharges are real and legal, but with app bookings, the surcharge is already included in the fixed fare, so you don't pay extra.
238
The app protects you.
239
I love technology sometimes.
240
Congestion means heavy traffic.
241
Too many cars on one road.
242
There's congestion on the main road.
243
This is a very natural phrase.
244
You can use it in cities, airports, highways, anywhere.
245
Tom, do you have congestion on your street?
246
I have one neighbor and a cat.
247
The cat sometimes blocks the road.
248
Does that count?
249
Cat congestion.
250
A new vocabulary item.
251
A detour is a different route, not the main road.
252
You go a different way.
253
Sometimes a detour is shorter.
254
Sometimes it is longer.
255
But the key word is, it is a different road from the normal one.
256
The driver took a detour because of traffic.
257
Very natural English.
258
The trunk is the storage space at the back of the car.
259
In British English, it's called the boot.
260
Boot?
261
Like a shoe.
262
Why?
263
English is a mystery, Tom, but in American English, trunk.
264
Can I put my suitcase in the trunk? perfect phrase.
265
Smooth does not mean the road is soft.
266
It means easy, comfortable, without problems.
267
That was a smooth ride!
268
Means the journey was comfortable and easy.
269
You can also say "smooth journey" or "everything went smoothly." Very useful in travel English.
270
Keep the change means the extra money is for you.
271
You don't need to give it back.
272
For example, the fare is $17 .50.
273
You give $20.
274
You say, "Keep the change," and the driver keeps $2 .50 is a tip.
275
It's a kind and generous phrase.
276
Drivers appreciate it.
277
Oh, I felt so good when I said it in the story.
278
"Keep the change, Daniel." Very confident.
279
Review time.
280
I give the situation Tom gives the word or phrase ready So ready.
281
Let's do this.
282
The price on the app that cannot change.
283
Fixed fare.
284
Too many cars.
285
Traffic is very bad.
286
Congestion.
287
The driver goes a different road, not the main one.
288
A detour.
289
An extra fee on top of the normal price.
290
A surcharge.
291
The journey was easy, comfortable, no problems.
292
Smooth ride.
293
Yes, perfect, Tom.
294
Now everyone at home, say the words out loud with us.
295
Ready?
296
Repeat after us.
297
Fixed fare.
298
Fixed fare.
299
Congestion.
300
congestion detour detour surcharge surcharge smooth ride smooth ride keep
301
the change keep the change amazing you just practiced six essential taxi words that is real English right there
302
Let's do a quick summary of everything we learned today.
303
Today, Lily and I arrived at the airport and needed a taxi to our hotel.
304
Step 1: Don't just jump in any taxi.
305
Use a taxi app.
306
The app shows you the fixed fare before you get in.
307
Step 2: Check the driver's name and license plate in the app before you get in.
308
Safety first.
309
Step 3: Put your suitcase in the trunk, put on your seatbelt, and enjoy the ride.
310
Step 4: If the driver takes a detour,
311
you can ask politely, "Is this the fastest route?" Step 5: When you arrive,
312
if the driver asks for more than the confirmed app price, stay calm.
313
Show the driver the screen and say, "The confirmed price is right here." Thank you.
314
Step 6: Pay through the app or by card.
315
And if you want to be kind, say "keep the change" for a tip.
316
6 steps.
317
You are now a taxi expert.
318
I am also a taxi expert.
319
Kind of.
320
You're getting there, Tom.
321
OK, before we go, do you remember the question from the beginning of today's video?
322
What phrase did Lilly use to show the driver the confirmed app price?
323
The answer is, the confirmed price is right here on my screen.
324
That is what Lily said to the driver polite, clear and confident.
325
Did you get it right?
326
Write your answer in the comments.
327
Even one sentence in English is great practice.
