1
Hello everyone and welcome back to Slow English Podcast.
2
I'm Sahar and today I want to talk about something that completely changed my English.
3
I want to tell you how I improved my grammar.
4
And honestly, this story might surprise you.
5
Because grammar was never my favorite part of learning English.
6
When I first started learning English, grammar felt impossible.
7
Every grammar book seemed full of rules, exceptions, charts, and formulas.
8
I felt like there was always something new to memorize.
9
Whenever I finished one grammar lesson, another lesson appeared.
10
Whenever I learned one-tons, there were three more waiting for me.
11
And because of that, I started believing that good grammar meant memorizing hundreds of rules.
12
So that's exactly what I did.
13
I bought grammar books.
14
I watched grammar videos.
15
I wrote notes.
16
I highlighted important pages.
17
I filled notebooks with explanations and for a short time I felt productive.
18
I felt like I was improving but then something strange happened.
19
A week later, I couldn't remember half of what I had studied.
20
A month later, most of it was gone.
21
and every time I opened my grammar book again, I felt like I was learning the same thing for the first time.
22
It was frustrating.
23
I remember thinking maybe I wasn't talented enough.
24
Maybe grammar wasn't for me.
25
Maybe some people were naturally good at grammar
26
and I wasn't one of them
27
but thankfully I was completely wrong the problem wasn't my memory the problem was my method at
28
that time I was treating grammar like information
29
but grammar isn't information grammar is a skill
30
and skills don't go through memorization skills grow through repetition one
31
day I stopped trying to finish grammar books instead I started trying to remember grammar
32
and those are two completely different goals before
33
that my goal was to complete lessons after
34
that my goal became making grammar stay in my head so I changed my routine Instead of studying new grammar every day,
35
I started reviewing old grammar.
36
At first, I felt strange.
37
I thought I was wasting time.
38
I thought I should always be learning something new. But slowly,
39
I noticed something the grammar points I reviewed started feeling familiar then comfortable then automatic
40
and that's exactly what I wanted I also stopped writing line
41
grammar explanations most of the time I never read them again
42
anyway instead whenever I learned a grammar point I try to understand it deeply once
43
and then revisit it many times later
44
that simple change saved me from forgetting another thing
45
that helped me was becoming more patient before I expected myself to remember everything immediately
46
if I forgot a grammar point I felt disappointed now I understand
47
that forgetting is normal in fact forgetting is part of learning every time I forgot something
48
and reviewed it again it became a stronger in my memory
49
so instead of feeling frustrated
50
when I forgot grammar I started seeing it as part of the process
51
that mindset helped me a lot around the same time I
52
also noticed another mistake I had been making I was separating
53
grammar from English grammar was one thing reading was another thing listening was another thing
54
and speaking was another thing as well everything was separate
55
but real language doesn't work that way grammar leaves inside English
56
so I started paying attention to grammar while doing other activities
57
while reading I noticed grammar patterns while listening I noticed grammar patterns
58
while watching videos I noticed grammar patterns without realizing it I was reviewing grammar all day long and
59
because I was seeing it in different places it became much
60
harder to forget little by little grammar stopped feeling like a
61
school subject it is started feeling like a natural part of language and
62
that was the beginning of the biggest improvement I had ever
63
experienced as my grammar started improving I became curious about something why was I remembering some grammar points for months
64
while forgetting others after only a few days the answer taught
65
me one of the most valuable lessons of my English journey the grammar
66
that stayed in my memory was the grammar I kept meeting.
67
The grammar that disappeared was the grammar I studied once and never saw again.
68
That sounds simple, but it changed the way I learned forever.
69
From that moment, I stopped chasing new grammar
70
topics i stopped chasing new grammar topics instead i focused on creating a system that brought
71
old drummer back again and again every week i spent time reviewing things i had already learned Not because I enjoyed reviewing.
72
No, not because it was exciting,
73
but because I realized that remembering is more important than learning.
74
Many learners spend years learning grammar.
75
Very few spend years remembering grammar.
76
And that's why so many people feel stuck.
77
Another thing that helped me was lowering my expectations.
78
For a long time, I believed I needed perfect grammar.
79
I thought good English meant making no mistakes.
80
That belief created pressure.
81
That pressure made learning harder.
82
Eventually, I accepted that mistakes were not signs of failure.
83
They were signs of progress.
84
Every mistake showed me something I needed to improve.
85
Instead of feeling embarrassed, I became curious.
86
Why did I make that mistake?
87
why did I forget
88
that structure why did I choose the wrong tense those questions
89
helped me learn much faster I also became much more consistent
90
before I started grammar in big bursts of of motivation before
91
i studied grammar in big bursts of motivation one day i
92
studied for three hours then maybe i didn't touch grammar for
93
a week later i started doing smaller amounts more regularly the sessions were shorter
94
but the results were much better consistency was more powerful
95
than intensity that lesson applies to almost everything in language learning another thing
96
that surprised me was how much listening improved my grammar at
97
first i thought listening was only useful for improving listening skills
98
but i was wrong the more english i heard the more familiar grammar became.
99
I wasn't memorizing rules.
100
I was becoming familiar with patterns this is incredibly powerful many
101
times I knew a sentence was correct without remembering the grammar rule behind it
102
that happened because my brain had heard similar structures
103
so many times before before I continue I want you to
104
write for me in the comments how much grammar is hard for you i will read all of your comments
105
and finally the biggest change happened
106
when i stopped seeing grammar as something separate from communication for
107
years grammar had been a subject a collection of rules a list of things to memorize
108
but finally grammar became something different it became a tool a tool
109
that helped me express my ideas more clearly a tool
110
that helped me communicate more confidently when
111
that shift happened everything became easier I wasn't studying grammar anymore i was using grammar
112
and that's the real goal looking back now i can honestly say
113
that my grammar improved
114
when i stopped searching for shortcuts there was no secret book
115
no magical course no perfect method there were only small habits
116
repeated for a long time reviewing old grammar being patient with myself accepting mistakes staying consistent
117
paying attention while reading and listening
118
and most importantly giving grammar enough time to become familiar
119
if you are struggling with grammar right now I want you to remember something
120
so important you don't need to memorize everything you don't need
121
to be perfect you don't need perfect grammar tomorrow you don't
122
need to finish every grammar book you own you only need to keep coming back to the same grammar points
123
again and again until they become part of you that's what I did
124
and that's how my grammar slowly became stronger over time thank
125
you for listening I will see you in the next episode don't forget to subscribe my channel
126

128

  • "naturally good at" - 자연스럽게 잘하다
  • "revisit it many times" - 여러 번 다시 살펴보다
  • "part of the process" - 과정의 일부
