쉐도잉 연습: How I Started Thinking in English 24/7 (Without Translating) - 영상으로 영어 말하기 배우기
레슨 만드는 중...
1
This was me searching for words translating in my head in real time.
2
Hello, so this is just a brief introduction for me to tell us.
3
That was not a bad day.
4
That was just every day.
5
Today, I think in English 24 hours a day without translating a single word.
6
And I have never lived in an English-speaking country.
7
I actually live in a country where nobody speaks English.
8
So, what changed?
9
It wasn't grammar.
10
It wasn't memorizing thousands of words.
11
I built a simple system.
12
I call it immersion thinking.
13
Three steps and once you understand them, you will know exactly how to train your brain to start thinking in English naturally.
14
Here's what most people get wrong.
15
They think they cannot think in English because they don't know enough words.
16
That was my problem.
17
I knew the words, I just couldn't use them fast enough to actually think.
18
And it took me way too long to figure out why.
19
Here's what was actually happening.
20
Your brain thinks in whatever language you use the most to understand, react, plan and talk to yourself.
21
Back then, almost all of that was happening in my native language.
22
I could study English for an hour, close the book, and five minutes later, my brain was completely back to my native language.
23
But there was a deeper problem.
24
Even when I was surrounded by English, my native language was still working in the background.
25
Every time I heard an English word, my brain didn't go straight to the meaning.
26
It searched for the matching word in Portuguese first, then connect that to the meaning.
27
English, Portuguese, meaning.
28
It happened so fast I didn't even notice.
29
It felt like I was understanding English directly, but I wasn't.
30
So I started training myself to skip that middle part.
31
If I felt something, I didn't want to think in my native language first.
32
I wanted to connect English straight to that feeling.
33
I did this with everything, my emotions, my opinions, the things I wanted to say.
34
English stopped feeling like a subject and started feeling like something I could experience directly.
35
I thought that was the whole answer.
36
I was wrong.
37
There was a night I remember clearly.
38
I got some bad news and in that moment, the moment I actually needed English the most, my brain didn't think in English.
39
It went straight back to my native language.
40
Like none of the practice had happened at all.
41
And it wasn't just that night.
42
When I stubbed my toe, it was my native language.
43
When I was dreaming, it was my native language.
44
That was kind of frustrating.
45
I had been doing this every single day and it felt like it meant nothing.
46
But it actually showed me the real problem.
47
I could control the thoughts I chose to think about, but I had zero control over the thoughts I didn't choose.
48
Honestly, that was the point where I almost gave up.
49
And if you are learning English right now and you are at the same point where you feel like nothing's working,
50
that's exactly why I built English Achievers, a community for people doing this together.
51
It's a place to actually stay consistent instead of doing this alone.
52
It's free to join, by the way.
53
First link in the description.
54
Your brain is not just processing words all day.
55
It's planning, remembering, replaying conversations, talking to yourself.
56
And almost all of that was still happening in my native language.
57
So instead of creating random English thoughts just to practice, I took the thoughts I was already having and let them happen in English instead.
58
Wait, if it's that easy to just let your thoughts happen in English, why can you just do that right now?
59
Let me show you what I mean.
60
Let's say you're about to think about something.
61
Most English learners would think of a sentence in their own language first, then maybe translate it into English after.
62
That's not what I did.
63
That is still translating.
64
What I did was stop myself the second I noticed the thought starting.
65
Instead of finishing it in my own language, I just started over in English.
66
Same thought, same moment.
67
But now it happened in English from the start, instead of happening in my language and getting translated.
68
At first this feels slow, of course, I had to catch myself a lot, but every time I did it, it got a little faster.
69
Until one day, I didn't have to catch myself anymore.
70
The thought just started in English on its own own.
71
So if I was planning my day, I planned it in English.
72
If I was replaying something awkward that happened yesterday, what I should have said or what they actually met, I did it in English.
73
That is a completely different feeling than practicing.
74
English is not an activity anymore.
75
Your life is the activity.
76
English is just a language you are using.
77
But there was still a gap.
78
I could force myself to think in English.
79
But when I was just living my life, my brain would choose my native language.
80
So I picked the moments where you don't get to choose.
81
For example, when you say something on the spot without even thinking about it.
82
There's no time to plan a sentence.
83
Something just comes out.
84
That reaction always came out in my native language.
85
Every time.
86
Because when you don't have time to think, your brain doesn't think in the language you are learning.
87
It thinks in the language it trusts the most.
88
So that became the real goal.
89
Not the thoughts I could plan, but the thoughts I couldn't and slowly without forcing it the reaction started changing it too.
90
I would get surprised and the sound that came out before I even thought about it was English.
91
That is how I knew something had actually changed.
92
Not that I could speak English on purpose but I couldn't stop it from happening on its own.
93
At this point I could force myself to think in English even my reactions were in English.
94
I thought I was done but there was one important point
95
that if you don't know what it the first two will not work.
96
Here's a problem nobody talks about.
97
Say you spend one hour a day practicing English on purpose, studying, watching a lesson, whatever.
98
That leaves 15 hours where you are awake and doing everything else in your native language.
99
Your notes, your messages, what you read for fun, what you watch before bed.
100
One hour of English cannot compete with 15 hours of your native language.
101
It doesn't matter how good that one hour is.
102
The 15 hours always wins because your brain follows the language you use the most.
103
So I changed this not by adding more study time but by moving things I was already doing into English.
104
My to-do lists, my random notes myself, the shows I watched, the stuff I read for fun.
105
Not only things designed to learn English but things I was interested in.
106
I stopped asking how do I practice English today, I started asking, how do I do more of today in English?
107
And that's the difference.
108
It's not about adding a second hour of study.
109
It's about removing what you do in your native language as much as possible.
110
And once those 15 hours started changing, I didn't need the one hour anymore.
111
English wasn't a task on my schedule.
112
It was just where I lived.
113
So that's it.
114
Three steps.
115
Remove the middle language.
116
Create an English inner world.
117
Make English your life.
118
That's immersion thinking.
119
None of these are hard.
120
You don't need to move to another country right now.
121
You don't need to memorize thousands of words.
122
You just need to give your brain more reasons to actually use English, not just study it.
123
And I know this sounds simple, but it took me 1000 days to actually figure out how to make it work.
124
I filmed the whole thing.
125
The days I struggled, the days I was with, the exact moment things started changing.
126
That is a completely different video.
127
The full system day by day.
128
This video gives you the three steps.
129
That one gives you the system to actually do it.
130
Go watch next and I see you there.
