Noemi was one of the members of EnglishProTips .com
2
and we did a practice speaking test before she went to do her real IELTS test.
3
Now, Noemi needed a band 7 in the speaking test to be eligible to become a nurse in the UK.
4
However, when she went to do her IELTS speaking test, she actually got a band eight.
5
So, as you can imagine, she was totally ecstatic.
6
Now, there is a lot of great language in this practice test, which I have highlighted in the video.
7
And stick around until the very end of the practice speaking test to see what advice I gave her,
8
particularly for part two of the speaking test.
9
Enjoy.
10
So this is the speaking test conducted on the 16th of April over Zoom.
11
The examiner is Eli Hardy -House and the candidate is Noemi.
12
So good afternoon.
13
My name is Eli.
14
Can you please tell me your full name?
15
I am Noemi Jan Ilopre Idubo.
16
And what should I call you?
17
You can just call me Noemi.
18
Noemi because Noemi I'd like to ask you some questions about yourself let's talk about this town
19
or city that you live in have you always lived in the same town
20
or city no actually in the past three years we moved twice already
21
so in the first town
22
that we were at it was also a small town like here what in the recent place
23
that we were in it's a cozy town it's like 25 kilometers away from the center the Copenhagen Central Station
24
so it has like a country feeling to it so we like it.
25
And would you like to always live in this city?
26
No,
27
as our situation is changing we plan to move to another country
28
and so it means that we will move to another city
29
but I think our standards of a place remains the same
30
it it should have like a country feeling to it
31
so yeah let's move on let's talk about weekends do you wake up early at the weekend no actually on the weekends
32
we as a family wake up like maybe at eight o
33
'clock unlike on the weekdays where I wake up at 5 30
34
so that I can catch the train
35
and get to work at seven o 'clock yeah do you like to have the same routine every weekend yes
36
it's a nice routine that we have
37
so on saturday we wake up we wake up at seven eight o 'clock
38
and then we prepare ourselves for a virtual church gathering on zoom we do
39
that every saturday and on sundays it's either we are invited for a dinner or a lunch by our friends and acquaintances.
40
So we would like to continue that kind of regularity in our weekends.
41
Were your weekends very different when you were younger?
42
No, actually, it's not that much of a difference because when I was a child,
43
we still go to the church on Saturdays but the main difference is
44
that before it was a physical church that we go to
45
and now it's kind of online and isolated
46
so I think that's the main difference on Sunday I think
47
it's much the same is there anything
48
you would like to change about your weekends I think
49
that's a hard question especially for me as a person I don't like a lot of changes
50
when when there is like even a small deviation in in my routine I will panic a bit so
51
for me i'm quite contented with um my weekends and how we we do things on the weekends
52
let's move on let's talk about singers do you have a favorite singer
53
yes i have definitely um and of course i i i'm sure
54
that you don't know her she's not really um a worldwide famous singer.
55
She's in the Philippines and she is called Sara Geronimo.
56
I really like her voice and when she sings it feels like there's an angel
57
that I am listening to an angel you know that her voice is very calming.
58
Have you ever been to a live concert to see a singer?
59
uh unfortunately no i have not been oh now i can recall the the location where we went to
60
a theater yes um i think yeah i i had been to a theater
61
and we enjoyed that concert it's a classical performance um but i forgot the name
62
Are singers from other countries popular where you live?
63
Sorry I did not hear it was a bit choppy
64
Yes, are singers from other countries popular where you live?
65
Yes, Filipinos love singers from America especially Mariah Carey, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift.
66
I think my fellow Filipinos, they are so in love with these singers.
67
And there are a lot of singers in the Philippines that try to imitate them and how they sing.
68
Would you like to be a famous singer?
69
no never in my dream because i i i love music
70
but i think it doesn't love me um i i i i i listen to songs a lot
71
and different kinds of genres also um but i'm contented with listening
72
and i will give um the the limelight to those famous people
73
now in this next part i'm going to give you a topic
74
and i'd like you to talk about it for one to two minutes before
75
you talk you'll have one minute to think about what you're going to say you can make some notes
76
if you wish do you understand yes i do understand all right remember
77
you have one to two minutes for this so don't worry
78
if i stop you i'll tell you
79
when the time is up can you start speaking
80
now please okay um
81
i am a fan of um green green spots especially in the cities.
82
I'm not really a city girl, but in my situation right now,
83
I don't have any choice but to also seek for those green spots in the cities.
84
So we have these parks,
85
it's either natural and man -made and i usually go there to relax
86
and when i go there i bring a book with me
87
if i don't have a book with me then i just sit there observe people that are passing by
88
and observe what they do and also I'd like to to watch how the animals are
89
are fed those those kind of things and I find it very therapeutic when I go to these places
90
It's calming, it's good for my eyes,
91
and it clears my mind of any clutter I have within the day,
92
especially when I am stressed with work and with maybe maintaining a family.
93
So I really love to go to these places, yeah.
94
uh sorry um do i need to really finish at two minutes yes okay
95
so how often do you go to this park would you say um i go there
96
when um for example i have um a work a day off work and also Sundays.
97
Yeah.
98
Okay, so now this next part I'm going to ask you one or two more general questions related to your topic.
99
Let's consider, first of all, relaxation.
100
So you mentioned you're from the Philippines.
101
What kind of activities do people from the Philippines find relaxing?
102
um one thing that comes to my mind um is the
103
is that people just come out of their houses
104
and sit there outside and then call the neighbors
105
because i live in a in a small village
106
and that's what people do there we just go out talk to our neighbors and that's our way of relaxing.
107
Is it different in where you live now in Copenhagen or near Copenhagen?
108
Sorry?
109
Is it different the way that people relax in the Philippines and where you live now?
110
Yes it's very different.
111
Here we don't usually see our neighbors unfortunately
112
but of course I would like to talk to them
113
and see them because I'm a person who really loves to talk to people.
114
So here when they relax people just go out to the parks, have a beer, walk the dog, things like that.
115
But in the Philippines it's quite different.
116
Would you say that the way that people relax is different
117
when you're older and younger of course it's different with the younger people if you
118
if we talk about them they seek relaxation in other things like playing games video games
119
or for them maybe going to the parties is a part of relaxation
120
and winding but for older people putting their feet up
121
and just relaxing in their homes I think those are the ways
122
that they they get out of stress you know some people say
123
that nowadays we're a lot busier than we used to be in the past what do you think
124
it is true that statement I agree with that
125
and one of the reason I think is the advancement and technology obviously
126
some people say that this innovation would help us not to be busy but
127
in fact what is happening is the opposite because we now know
128
that we have these machines and so we put more work on these machines
129
so that they could do it and to make the task accomplished.
130
So do you think that people would be better off if technology didn't advance at such a rapid rate?
131
No, I guess it's, I'm not saying that.
132
I think it just depends on how we use technology and our relationship to it.
133
I think in this modern days, we just need to prioritize things.
134
We need to plan our day so that this technology will not get in our way of living.
135
Of course, they are very beneficial to us
136
but we make we also make boundaries we just use them
137
if we need them and if not then yeah we do away with them.
138
What advice would you give to somebody that feels
139
that technology is taking over their life a little bit too much and not giving them the personal space that they need.
140
Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm the right person to advise those people,
141
but I would say to them that I empathize with them because,
142
of course, I live in the same generation where these gadgets are ubiquitous and it easily gets on our way.
143
But I would tell them that I empathize to them and
144
that they will just do their best not to be overwhelmed and make boundaries when using this technology.
145
Do you perceive much of a difference between relaxation and laziness?
146
I honestly don't know I think okay with relaxation I think it implies
147
that you worked hard before you do the relaxation
148
but with laziness I reckon that you don't really do things at all like even beforehand
149
so yeah that's what i thought
150
so is one better than the yes yes of course relaxation
151
is better than being lazy okay thank you very much noemi that is the end of the speaking text.
152
How did you find it?
153
I was really nervous all throughout and I keep on thinking of my vocabulary,
154
my grammar to the point that i am disturbed by it
155
and so i cannot think and i cannot express myself well right interesting
156
because i thought you know your vocabulary and your grammar was at a very very high level
157
and i was very impressed
158
and what we'll do in a second is go through some of the amazing vocabulary
159
that you used um
160
and you know i don't think
161
you have anything to worry about getting at least band seven in the speaking test
162
because in my opinion
163
and that's this is not reflective of the british council ideally in my opinion
164
you are well beyond band seven um
165
and what we'll do look at each part individually
166
so you're assessed on four criteria the first one is fluency
167
and coherence and that refers to your ability to speak often at length without hesitation or repetition
168
and of the four this is maybe your lowest um school um
169
and i think it's because you said you were consciously thinking about the vocabulary
170
and grammar and and how not to make mistakes and
171
so as a result your your fluency was a bit um hesitant
172
but um you know i can see
173
that you're very capable of doing very well on fluency coherence it almost you strike me as someone
174
that might do slightly better if you've just had a conversation in english with your husband
175
and you're in a coffee and then you go straight in
176
and you you feel more relaxed and so i think just getting into
177
that kind of mentality might help you
178
when it comes to the speaking now um you're capable of band eight for fluency
179
and coherence in this test it would be band seven
180
and maybe some cruel examiners would give you band six
181
and I'll tell you why
182
because in part two you really need to speak for two minutes
183
so one of the criteria of band seven plus is
184
that the candidate so you can speak at length without noticeable effort
185
and what happens is you stopped and you continue so that
186
that shows that you can't speak at length without noticeable effort
187
so so you might get an examiner that would give you six of
188
that for that and that was only in part two
189
because in every other part you were fine
190
so what i'd recommend is just continue speaking
191
and then the examiner will will tell you to stop
192
and it's quite awkward because
193
if you stop talking the examiner is just going to listen go like this yeah like i did
194
and wait for you to continue i mean that's what they're instructed to do um
195
and it just it will kind of throw you off your thought
196
so just continue speaking
197
and then they will tell you to stop at the end okay yeah can i speak yeah
198
i'm just yeah it's just because i don't know really like how to divide like each point
199
You um but i guess um i don't really have to
200
because when for example
201
when i finish everything the points to say something about the points each point
202
then i don't want to go back again to the first point
203
if i just have to you know sustain um yeah you know what i mean i know what you mean
204
because you don't have to meet yourself and start all over again yeah
205
so that's why I just okay maybe stop
206
and then I will just practice more
207
so what I'd recommend to you Naomi is if
208
that happens start to talk about the future
209
so what you do is you say now look I'm about to move to the UK
210
and I'm really going to miss this park I really hope I can find somewhere similar
211
because it's been so integral for me as a place to sit down and relax
212
and as soon as you start talking about the future
213
you've got a whole new set of things to talk about okay i will take note of
214
that yeah that's that's a good idea yeah that's a piece of advice
215
that i've always i think is one of the most one of the best pieces of advice
216
you can have for part two
217
because it just suddenly gives you a lot more opportunity to speak um the other thing
218
that a lot of candidates do
219
that helps them is to tell a story in in part two
220
so for example if you're if you're talking about a park you tell the story of
221
when you first went to the park um how you felt
222
when you went there what you saw when you went there
223
and then you start talking about how your relationship with the park changed maybe you met somebody
224
while you were there and then you begin to elaborate
225
on an anecdote a story about that part
226
which gives you more opportunities to use different grammar different tenses and speak for longer yeah yeah tell a story okay
227
and um in in the in
228
so in english pro tips we've got these ielts speaking simulations um
229
and what you can do is just um you can record yourself doing these just to make sure
230
that you can speak for two minutes as just some practice unfortunately no one will assess
231
that it's just for your own record but it's something
232
that you can do to familiarize yourself with what two minutes feels like
233
when you're speaking okay okay
234
so the next thing you've got fluent in coherence next thing is lexical resource
235
which is vocabulary and your lexical resource is astounding it's really good it started very good
236
and it even just got better and better
237
so in part one
238
we had lovely collocations like cozy town a country feeling um
239
physical church moving to online um content contented with my routine um
240
it feels as though i'm listening to an angel calming voice genre limelight
241
Then in part two, we've got a lot of nice vocabulary as well.
242
I'm not really a city girl, but, and then elaborating, natural and man -made,
243
the way animals are fed,
244
so to feed in the past simple is a very nice verb and very unusual to hear, so very nice.
245
Describing something as therapeutic, the park, very nice clear my mind of clutter as a very powerful collocation
246
that can get you a very high score in for lexical resource
247
and then in part three
248
we had really really nice vocabulary unwinding putting your feet up sympathize ubiquitous same generation overwhelmed
249
and then reckon as well as a synonym for think so really impressive with the lexical results well done.
250
Thank you.
251
Yeah and you know and I expected
252
that from reading your essays as well I thought I'm looking forward to seeing the vocabulary that Noemi's got.
253
I think I am better in writing than speaking because I have more time to think and yeah but with speaking.
254
It strikes me that you might be a bit of a perfectionist.
255
yes i guess so and maybe maybe
256
because um filipinos are really like i mean my fellow filipinos i feel like they are very judgmental
257
when you don't like speak good english they say it's like in um they equal it to intelligence something like
258
that so yeah and of course i want to get rid of that but still yeah
259
okay well i mean i think you know this it's a double -edged sword
260
because on the one hand it means
261
that your your vocabulary is a very high level
262
and you take pride in that and then the on the other hand it means
263
that sometimes if you're if you don't feel you're doing well you you
264
but you start to stutter
265
and you get a bit worried yes you know it has good points
266
and it has bad points um
267
and then you know one thing
268
i really like about your answers is you had a lot
269
of um a lot of natural linking words like oh i'm not sure
270
if i'm the right person to ask but you know that
271
that kind of stuff is really nice
272
because you know you're being honest you're not so when when
273
when ielts students learn linking words often they learn these set phrases
274
that they want to use but they're not appropriate
275
so they go oh that's a good question
276
if you asked me i would say and it's not natural
277
and examiners know when something is memorized and when something is natural yeah
278
because that's what they're trained to do
279
and you're using a lot of these linking words very naturally like little things like I'm not sure
280
if I'm the right person because you genuinely felt well who am I to give advice
281
and that that kind of brilliant because that's you conveying your idea
282
and examiners will definitely appreciate that
283
and then pronunciation is very good there was like some sometimes there were problems with your sentence stress
284
and that was you know sometimes when you started to stumble a little bit
285
but you know you're definitely at least bound seven for pronunciation
286
because everything that you said was uh very easy to understand
287
and um at a word level your your word stress is very good
288
so it's all very clear to understand you
289
and you know with a with the right amount of luck
290
you would um you would be able to move into
291
that uh band eight level for pronunciation as well
292
so well done thank you I guess yeah I'll be contented as long as I get seven
293
because yeah I'm I'm not I'm not applying to become a IELTS expert
294
or a teacher so that I could get the eight
295
and nine but as long as I can get seven I will be happy
296
Well, I think that's very likely.
297
I think you're setting yourself up well to get your band seven.
298
Yeah, I also feel like I should not be complacent
299
because maybe it's only like the type of the test that I will get.
300
So I really hope that I can get a good set of questions also.
301
Yeah.
