1
Let's see if you bleed in black and white.
2
Your face finally got that splash of color.
3
It's so desperately needed.
4
Today, I have an exciting lesson for you with Netflix's Wednesday.
5
In the scene we'll watch, she meets the most popular girl in school, Bianca, and challenges her to a fight, fencing.
6
That's this sport like sword fighting.
7
You'll be learning tons of new words in this lesson, like bleed and splash that we just saw.
8
and to actually practice speaking the new words
9
that you're learning with people from all around the world for
10
free you can join our new speaking club on the real life app
11
so just click the link down in the description below to get started
12
and i'll also be telling you more about
13
that in just a little bit now let's
14
head over to fencing practice coach coach
15
he tricked me it was a clean strike rowan maybe
16
if you wind less than practice more you wouldn't suck seriously coach
17
when am i gonna get some real competition anyone else want
18
challenge me i do oh you must be the psychopath they let in
19
and you must be the self -appointed queen bee interesting thing about bees pull out their stingers and they drop dead
20
rowan doesn't need you to come to his defense he's not helpless he's lazy are we doing this or not
21
so at the start we saw bianca fencing against another student
22
named rowan coach coach she tricked me it was a clean
23
strike rowan to trip someone means to make them stumble
24
or fall usually by catching their foot
25
but the coach isn't buying it he says it was a
26
clean strike meaning a fair legal hit done properly within the rules.
27
What do you think?
28
Did Bianca cheat?
29
Well next we see that Bianca isn't a very humble winner.
30
To whine means to complain in an annoying high -pitched way, kind of like a small child would.
31
Like in this example from the Addams Family.
32
It's not gonna be easy.
33
There are people everywhere.
34
You can do it if you just stop whining.
35
Nobody likes that.
36
Diana, you gonna stop that whining and if something
37
or someone sucks it means it's just really bad listen to
38
this i got a stack of user complaints like a mile high look i know it sucks
39
but the ip recognition is rock hard okay
40
so don't even worry about it but another sonic youth album
41
and it sucks it's just noise so
42
which of these is the best example of whining i refuse to accept defeat but it's not fair.
43
I always lose.
44
I'll get you next time.
45
Right, it's B.
46
Moving on.
47
Oh, you must be the psychopath they let in.
48
And you must be the self -appointed queen B.
49
So Wednesday is not having Bianca's insults
50
if you appoint someone you're officially giving them a role
51
or position so self -appointed means that someone gave themselves a title
52
or authority that nobody else actually gave them my name is dawada
53
and as team captain appointed team captain i'm not acknowledging that remark
54
and a queen bee is a slang term for the most popular most powerful girl in a school
55
or social group you know the one everyone either wants to be
56
or wants to be friends with think regina george in mean girls this fame
57
or popularity usually comes with power
58
and influence just like the power a real queen bee has over her workers
59
so wednesday is saying bianca just decided all on her own
60
that she's the top girl here nobody voted for
61
that interesting thing about bees pull out their stingers
62
and they drop dead and this is a brilliant play on words from wednesday
63
and kind of a threat so this is the beast stinger
64
and drop dead means to die suddenly
65
and immediately actually it's just like olivia rodrigo's new song
66
that we recently made a reel to drop dead literally means to die suddenly
67
but we can use it as an exaggeration to express a big emotion
68
when the person you really like asks you on a date you feel like you might drop dead.
69
When Messi scores a goal in the final minute of a game, many fans drop dead.
70
And for more quick lessons like this, be sure to follow us on Instagram.
71
Rowan doesn't need you to come to his defense.
72
He's not helpless, he's lazy.
73
If someone is helpless, it means they can't do anything to protect or help themselves.
74
By the way, the suffix less means without.
75
So helpless means without help or unable to help oneself.
76
You'll see this pattern everywhere.
77
Careless without care.
78
hopeless without hope fearless without fear so Bianca's saying Rowan can help himself
79
but he's too lazy to try ouch now the first time
80
I moved to another country to Germany I felt pretty helpless see I've been studying German for three years
81
but no one could understand me when I spoke that's
82
because I'd had plenty of opportunities to study German
83
but not to speak it but with time
84
and patience I eventually became fluent but that wasn't
85
because I studying more it was much simpler than
86
that i finally had people to speak with
87
and a reason to speak every day and honestly
88
if you know a lot of english
89
but you don't feel natural speaking it that's probably what's missing for you too
90
so we built a place for exactly
91
that inside the real life app a place where you don't
92
just learn english you live it it's called the real life
93
speaking club every single day you get a new fascinating topic
94
that you can discuss with people from all around the world in real conversations
95
and become more fluent this really is the best way to go from intermediate learner to advanced english speaker
96
and if you're nervous about speaking you can practice the questions with your ai coach first
97
and then jump into your first conversation it's free so start your adventure right now with a link in the description.
98
All right now let's watch Wednesday and Bianca's actual fight.
99
We heard en garde at the very start of the fight, which is borrowed straight from French.
100
It's said right before a fencing match starts, telling both opponents to get into position and get ready to fight.
101
All right, so, so far, Wednesday and Bianca are pretty evenly matched.
102
means they're roughly equal in skill
103
so neither one has a clear advantage think of france
104
and argentina in the 2022 world cup they were pretty evenly matched now let's continue watching the
105
that first point was clearly beginner's luck let's finish
106
this for the final point i would to invoke a military challenge no masks no tips winner draws first blood
107
so bianca says that wednesday had beginner's luck that first point was clearly beginner's luck
108
this is when someone who's totally new at something succeeds purely by chance not skill Like when your friend, who's never played darts in their life,
109
throws one dart and hits a bullseye.
110
That's beginner's luck.
111
Listen to these ways natives use it.
112
I want to do it again.
113
Going again.
114
Everybody's a winner.
115
Win a prize.
116
Then we hear Wednesday wants to up the stakes or increase the challenge.
117
For the final point, I would like to invoke a military challenge.
118
To invoke means to formally bring something up or call upon a rule, tradition, or power like here in Pirates of the Caribbean.
119
I invoke the rite of parley.
120
According to the code of the brethren set down by the pirates Morgan and Bartholomew, you have to take me to your captain.
121
Let's hear exactly what a military challenge is in fencing.
122
No masks, no tips.
123
Winner draws first blood.
124
so this is a fencing mask fencing swords have a soft rounded tip
125
that keeps it from actually hurting anyone
126
or in another context this is the tip of a pencil sure annoying
127
when those break so by removing masks
128
and tips this fight just got a whole lot more dangerous
129
that's why the winner is the first to draw blood
130
that means to actually cause bleeding but actually sometimes when you go to the hospital, they need to draw blood with a needle for tests.
131
Alright, and finally, we can learn with the two insults Bianca used in that clip where she wins.
132
Let's see if you bleed in black and white.
133
To bleed simply means to lose blood, usually from a cut or an injury.
134
Bianca's being sarcastic since Wednesday famously only wears black and white.
135
And then when Bianca wins, she throws this at Wednesday.
136
Your face finally got that splash of color.
137
It's so desperately needed.
138
A splash of something is just a small, unexpected amount of it, usually a color or a flavor.
139
You'll hear this a lot with drinks, like a splash of milk in my coffee.
140
It's just begging for a splash of color.
141
Cappuccino with an extra splash of espresso, please.
142
Again, it's a mean joke.
143
Bianca's saying that a bit of red makes Wednesday look better.
144
So in the end, Bianca comes out on top, meaning she wins.
145
We could say Spain came out on top in the World Cup this year.
146
However, there's a great lesson here about not judging a book by its cover.
147
That is, not being tricked by your first impression of something, practicing being non -judgmental.
148
Wednesday and Bianca both start out thinking they know who the other is.
149
However, they eventually realize they have a lot in common.
150
They both deal with challenges with their parents, and eventually they band together to defeat the villain, Joseph Crackstone, at the end of season one
151
and become friends by the way a great way to increase your non -judgmentalism
152
which really is an essential skill in a globalized world is
153
by speaking with people from all around the world in the real life speaking club
154
that I mentioned earlier remember
155
that you can join for free with the link down in
156
the description I hope you had fun learning with Wednesday
157
and Bianca but we're not done yet now comes the most important part of the lesson you'll test everything
158
that you learned by But watching the scenes again, this time without subtitles and answering some quiz questions.
159
Let's do this.
160
Coach, coach, you tricked me.
161
It was a clean strike Rowan.
162
Maybe if you whined less and practiced more, you wouldn't suck.
163
If you whine, you are complaining, winning a competition, losing blood.
164
Seriously, coach, when am I going to get some real competition?
165
Anyone else want to challenge me?
166
I do.
167
Oh, you must be the psychopath they let in.
168
And you must be the self -appointed queen bee.
169
What does self -appointed mean?
170
Chosen and voted in by others?
171
Someone who gave themselves a title?
172
Someone who was appointed by king or queen?
173
Interesting thing about bees.
174
Pull out their stingers and they drop dead.
175
Rowan doesn't need you to come to his defense.
176
He's not helpless.
177
He's lazy.
178
How else can you call someone courageous, using the less suffix?
179
Fearless.
180
Are we doing this or not?
181
Anger!
182
Point to Wednesday.
183
The score is even.
184
If two competitors are evenly matched, it means one is clearly much better than the other, they are roughly equal in skill, they refuse to compete against each other.
185
What do you call it if someone new at something does well?
186
Beginner's luck?
187
Beginner's chance?
188
Beginner's fortune?
189
That first point was clearly beginner's luck.
190
Let's finish this.
191
For the final point, I would like to invoke a military challenge.
192
No masks, no tips.
193
Winner draws first blood It's your decision,
194
Bianca Let's see if you bleed in black and white
195
your face finally got that splash of color it's so desperately needed
196
