1
Welcome to Live With Purpose with New Perspective founder Todd Novacek.
2
In this episode, Todd is joined by Richard and his daughter Chris.
3
He dives into their transformative journey to senior living and the profound impact it's had on their lives.
4
Get ready for an inspiring conversation.
5
Chris and Richard King, so nice to have you at New Perspective Senior Living.
6
I appreciate you coming in this morning.
7
And before we get started, I'd like to make a comment.
8
If I'm correct, you're going to be celebrating quite a big moment in time.
9
100-year birthday party.
10
Wow.
11
And you have 48 grandchildren.
12
I think that's right.
13
That's what I heard. And how many children?
14
Ten children.
15
Your bride is a saint, right?
16
She just got nominated for sainthood, right?
17
Oh, yeah.
18
Good for you.
19
Oh, children.
20
Gosh, that's phenomenal.
21
Well, we're just going to chat a little bit about your experience,
22
maybe before you got involved in living that new perspective, and maybe a little bit about what's going on now,
23
how things go for you.
24
So prior to getting involved,
25
maybe Chris, you could share just a moment of what was Richard's lifestyle like when you would visit and you see him,
26
etc. When my mother died, we moved Dad into independent living in Stillwater.
27
And that went real well.
28
Last fall, he fell and needed to go into assisted living.
29
Oh, okay.
30
And one of your family members, Holly.
31
That's my daughter.
32
Yes.
33
Took us over to New Perspective, and he's been there ever since.
34
And he just, he loves being there.
35
It's a perfect place for him.
36
The people are wonderful.
37
What do you feel when you're there?
38
What kind of environment would you, how would you characterize the environment there?
39
Actually the whole system otherwise is pretty doggone good.
40
They've got things going on all the time.
41
But I've never played all the games they play.
42
I've never had time to do things so quiet as they are.
43
They play a lot of cards, they play to hit the ball over the fence
44
and I don't do any of them because I finally worked my way out of it.
45
But you have enough other stuff going on that keeps you busy.
46
Yeah, I can go back to my room and use the computer.
47
Oh, wow.
48
I ran the first computer ever made on a B-29.
49
The first computer ever on a plane.
50
So you were involved in electronics way back...
51
I was running a gunnery system.
52
Okay.
53
You don't want to talk about that.
54
No, but, you know, listen, those are important.
55
You went involved for your country and honored your duty for your country.
56
Just flying an airplane in those days was a thrill.
57
Yeah, I bet it was a real thrill.
58
When you transitioned from your home to senior living, How did that decision get made, Chris?
59
Was it a group decision?
60
Were you and Richard just deciding what you wanted to do?
61
Well, it's always a family decision.
62
But when he moved from Stewartville up here, we put him into independently because he was doing real well.
63
And we just wanted a place where there would be some help for him.
64
Right.
65
When he broke his hip, we needed more attention, and that's why we ended up at New Perspectives.
66
And he has improved so quickly.
67
Would you say because you're in a senior living community,
68
does that help you, force you in a way to be more involved
69
and to get on your walker and move through the building?
70
Do you have to actually get more involved than maybe you would if you were just at home?
71
They do have a time every day that they have now where we all meet together and have a lunch every day.
72
I like to not so much read, but I've got many books from World War II.
73
I have a terrific best collection in the country.
74
Really?
75
Probably the United States.
76
I don't know, but I have a hell of a collection.
77
It's history, yeah.
78
It was three years of bang, bang.
79
You know, I mean, it was a life.
80
Yeah, that's your history.
81
You take off in the morning for six hours, and you train, you shoot guns.
82
I've run all the gunnery systems, so we did a lot of target practice.
83
I mean, I'm coming into a world of, I mean, I'm down.
84
And I'm getting used to it, though.
85
Yeah, I would encourage you, and I'm sure you're probably already doing this,
86
but the more you can keep moving throughout the building.
87
I move around a lot.
88
He uses the recumbent bike there.
89
He had physical therapy with his hip for several months after he moved into it.
90
You did, okay.
91
I make it a point to do something every day.
92
I'm not outlandish, I just get a little bit.
93
But you look like you're in great shape, and so you're...
94
That is up to God, I don't know how he's done that actually.
95
I have no idea.
96
You can give me the credit.
97
I don't smoke, I don't smoke, I don't chase women.
98
One of the studies that just came out a few weeks ago and maybe you heard about this,
99
but they did a big national study with older adults who lived in their homes.
100
The bottom line of the study was they found
101
that most people responded responded to the survey that the biggest challenge they had living on their own at home was loneliness.
102
So my question to you is, do you feel that there's less loneliness?
103
I think we all have some loneliness, but do you feel there's some less loneliness in not only your life, but do you see it in other people?
104
The people that are there now, I don't see much loneliness at all.
105
They pretty well entertain each other.
106
That's interesting.
107
They have a lot of things.
108
The lady runs it and it's something, it's not in my life because I've never done that, but they do all these things,
109
different things at different hours, different days.
110
They do good.
111
So your feeling anyway is that the general loneliness issue is less if these other folks,
112
folks or you were living in your own home by yourself.
113
Another thing is I take 15 medicines a day.
114
Okay.
115
And they come into my room.
116
You actually have a doctor that comes into New Perspectives and visits monthly, I believe it is.
117
And I get the updates and it's just wonderful.
118
I'm glad you're using that service because we believe in it a lot.
119
We like to have the doctors in our communities, seeing folks, because that's their life, that's where they're living.
120
So the doctor now can actually see you in your environment and see what you're doing and ask you questions like,
121
hey, are you going to the gym every day and working out?
122
And you'll say to him, yeah, I'm going in the gym every day and working out, and he can actually go see what you do.
123
that's pretty cool.
124
Chris, if I could ask you,
125
what do you see as maybe the one or three best benefits of having a father move into a senior living community?
126
What have you noticed or what do you feel?
127
He feels safer.
128
Safer.
129
He had been having night dreams and he'd been hearing noises,
130
and he had all kinds of little things that he didn't like and they take care of those things.
131
He's probably in a better spot right now than a couple of years ago.
132
And he loves coming up and talking to them and having them taken care of.
133
He was having me do all this stuff before.
134
Well, for Chris, it's just like Christmas.
135
Well, you know, you're right.
136
I mean, now I think maybe you get more attention.
137
Well, he does.
138
And the thing, he wears the...
139
The pendant.
140
The pendant around his neck.
141
That pendant's the best thing ever.
142
Whenever he has a problem, he calls me and I say, push the button, Dad.
143
Yeah, yeah.
144
Well, that just saved your trip.
145
I don't have to run over there.
146
That just saved your trip.
147
That's right.
148
My mom lived, she was 91, but she lives in and we lived in Chanhassen,
149
I can't tell you that the number of times my wife Sherry or I would be driving from Chanhassen to Roseville, it was always during rush hour,
150
because she needed something, we needed to be there.
151
It took me a long time to get her into senior living, which then worked out really well for her.
152
She went in with a real negative attitude, and within about 30 days, all of a sudden, she started meeting people,
153
and her whole life changed.
154
I know what you've gone through in having to be there you know, when there's a need.
155
And there's nothing wrong with having to have a need, but as an adult child, you feel now the benefit is that at least you've got help.
156
I would say that it's, you know, your life just improves exponentially.
157
You have people there, you have people that care for you.
158
They have all these activities that he doesn't do, but a lot of the other people do.
159
And I mean, it's just, it's a community and you're not sitting alone in your house.
160
This is total freedom, I think, for Chris.
161
I can trust the people there to do what they need to do and to call me when they need me.
162
That's really wonderful.
163
And I'm happy you've got maybe a little bit more personal time.
164
Thank you for your time.
165
Thank you.
166
Thank you for sharing your story.
167
and I think it's just so timely that you're going to be turning 100.
168
I mean, that is just such an exciting.
169
Well, thank you very much again.
170
Thank you.
171
Thank you.
172
That was fun.

  • "dive into their transformative journey" - 그들의 변화하는 여정에 깊이 들어가다
  • "profound impact" - 깊은 영향
  • "get ready for an inspiring conversation" - 영감을 주는 대화에 준비되다
  • "prior to getting involved" - 참여하기 전에
  • "characterize the environment" - 환경을 설명하다

약점을 보완하세요

이 비디오는 특히 영어 발음 교정과 리듬 연습에 도움이 됩니다. 대화에서 사용된 "phenomenal", "transformative"와 같은 긴 단어의 발음과, "I think that's right", "Oh, wow"와 같은 감탄사의 강세를 주의깊게 들여야 합니다. shadowing site나 shadow speech를 이용해 반복적으로 연습하면, 자연스러운 발음과 말하기 리듬을 익힐 수 있습니다. 특히 "They've got things going on all the time"와 같은 구문의 연결 발음을 shadowspeaks 방식으로 연습하면, 실제 대화에서의 흐름을 더 잘 따라갈 수 있습니다.
