쉐도잉 연습: ONE thing that will improve your English Listening Skills - 영상으로 영어 말하기 배우기

레슨 만드는 중...
1
If you want to improve your English listening skills, don't try to understand each and every word.
2
Let's find out what to do instead.
3
Hello, it's Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy and the YouTube channel English Speaking Success, where you become a more confident speaker of English.
4
You know, I think the biggest mistake that students make
5
when listening to English is sometimes they try to understand every single word and you can't, even I can't.
6
If you do that, you get lost quickly, you can't keep up and then you, you give up.
7
And you give up my white towel.
8
You must go beyond individual words, right?
9
The secret, the secret, the one thing you should do is always focus on the gist first.
10
The gist is the overall idea, right?
11
Just try to understand the overall general idea.
12
How can you do that?
13
Focus on the stressed words in a text or in a sentence.
14
These are the key ones that you really need in order to understand what someone is saying.
15
Teachers, we call this sentence stress, right?
16
And in this video, I'm going to show you how sentence stress works and how knowing sentence stress will help you
17
understand much more when you listen to real English.
18
Let's do it.
19
So sentence stress refers to the words we stress in a sentence.
20
Surprise!
21
We stress the most important words, usually the nouns, the verbs,
22
the adjectives, adverbs, not usually prepositions or pronouns or question words, right?
23
Okay.
24
For example, I live in a town near London.
25
Live, the verb, town, the noun, London, a noun, a proper noun, a real noun.
26
So why is this important?
27
Because not all languages do this.
28
So in that sentence, right, I live in a town near London.
29
You can hear the rhythm.
30
I live near it.
31
I live in a town near London.
32
Right?
33
I live in a town near London.
34
Now, we don't go around all the speaking like this all the time.
35
Where are you from?
36
Hello, my name is Keith.
37
Hello, my name is Keith.
38
We don't go around speaking like that.
39
But to show you the stress, I live in a town in London, we stress these words.
40
Some languages don't.
41
Some languages stress each syllable almost with equal stress or weight, right?
42
For example, Mandarin Chinese.
43
我住在倫敦附近 Or Spanish, similarly, tend to stress every syllable.
44
Vivo en una ciudad cerca de Londres.
45
It's different.
46
English tends to be, it's more of a stress-timed language, by and large.
47
So we stress the words at the same time interval.
48
Let me show you with two sentences, right?
49
And listen for the stress.
50
I live in a town near London.
51
I've been living in this town just near London for years.
52
Can you see or hear the stress is in the same place, even though the second sentence has many more syllables?
53
And that's what makes English a stress-timed language, more or less, generally speaking.
54
And I personally think that's why English works very well with music, because it has that beat, regular beat.
55
And so you can fit the lyrics into that beat.
56
Now, if you try and understand every word, you will fail.
57
Even British people don't do that.
58
I've been living in this town just near London for years.
59
We hear living town London years.
60
That's what we focus on.
61
So that brings me to my second point, why this is important, because listening for sentence stress is a strategy native speakers use as well, right?
62
We only focus on those key words, right?
63
We are so used to the grammar that we will recognize the tense immediately, right?
64
But, and this is interesting, imagine I'm in a disco or speaking to someone over the phone or on a noisy street.
65
I will have strategies to help me understand what I cannot hear.
66
I can't hear everything.
67
So I use the strategies like one of them, focus on the key stressed words.
68
Also, I will use the context to help me confirm the tense and to get the overall meaning.
69
Sometimes I will guess.
70
And all of these are listening strategies that you should develop as well.
71
Listening for stress words, use the context and guess.
72
Now, there's a third reason that sentence stress is really important.
73
And it's because sentence stress can change the meaning of a sentence too, right?
74
Let's go back to our example.
75
I live in a town near London.
76
Stress words provide the new and important information.
77
But I could, or you might hear, I live in a town near London.
78
We've changed, right?
79
And maybe the person is saying this because they they want to make it clear that I don't live far away.
80
So I live in a town near London, right?
81
You probably still stress the word town, but less because it's less important.
82
Near is the key information.
83
Imagine somebody said to me, okay, so you live far away from London.
84
I would probably They say, no, I live in a town near London.
85
Can you see the stress has changed again?
86
No is the key information to say, no, you're wrong.
87
I live in a town near London.
88
I stress near.
89
The other words are not stressed so much and they almost disappear because we're repeating them.
90
They're not important.
91
Got it?
92
Of course, do remember, right?
93
Context and intonation play a very important role in deciding what the person means, what they're trying to say.
94
But knowing sentence stress, it's essential.
95
And it will really help you understand native English speakers or proficient English speakers.
96
So to summarize, whatever your level of English, there will always be things you don't understand.
97
Okay, accept it.
98
Don't try to understand everything.
99
Focus on the stressed words.
100
Focus on understanding the overall meaning.
101
Focus on gist.
102
Now, your next question is, great, Keith, how do I do this?
103
How do I develop and practice this skill?
104
Great question.
105
Let me give you five tips to help you do this in the next part of the video.
106
Oh, by the way, if you're enjoying this and finding it useful, do remember to subscribe.
107
Give me a like as well.
108
Okay, tips for practice.
109
Number one, do dictations.
110
A dictation is where you listen and you write down or type what you hear.
111
So do dictations with very, very short audio texts, just two to three sentences.
112
Okay, listen and write the key words the stressed words.
113
Listen again and add any extra words if you can.
114
Listen a third time and just try to write everything you can.
115
Then go back and check with the tape script if you can get a tape script.
116
Nowadays on YouTube videos, you can get the tape scripts very easily.
117
Dictations.
118
It's great.
119
We do this a lot in the gold live lessons, in the gold course.
120
Students enjoy it and find it very, very useful.
121
I think.
122
I hope so.
123
Number two, do plenty of longer listening.
124
news stories, podcasts, things like that, where you don't look up any words.
125
You don't take notes.
126
You just listen.
127
So it doesn't feel like studying, right?
128
It feels that you're more like a native speaker rather than a student.
129
Number three, change your expectations.
130
Don't expect to understand everything.
131
Number four, listen to English at least one hour a day.
132
Yes.
133
As students, we don't listen enough.
134
One hour a day.
135
Now that can be fitting it into your daily routine.
136
20 minutes in the morning when everybody's getting up, before everybody wakes up.
137
Maybe on your commute for 10 minutes, maybe on your daily walk for 20 minutes, in the gym for 10 minutes,
138
or just before you go to bed, another 20 minutes.
139
Try and get in one hour a day.
140
If you can do 10,000 steps, you can do an hour of English.
141
The thing is, if you do, you will notice a huge improvement in weeks.
142
Number five, stop using subtitles.
143
I know, I'm sorry.
144
And I know on Netflix, it's like, what did he say?
145
What did he say?
146
Because the noise is louder than the voice.
147
But try and get into the habit, sometimes not using subtitles.
148
Why?
149
Because subtitles encourage you to focus on every single word as you're reading, right?
150
Doesn't help you focus on the stressed words.
151
That's it.
152
Five easy tips. So there you go.
153
Now you know what sentence stress is.
154
You know why it's important and how to practice it.
155
So what are you going to do now?
156
Let me know in the comments below.
157
Let me know what you think of this video.
158
Oh, by the way, if you want to know more about the gold course I mentioned, there's also a link down below.

160
And I will see you in the next video.
161
Take care now.
162
Bye-bye.
