Hi, welcome to Learn English with Camille.
2
I'm Camille and I'm so glad you're here.
3
In today's video, I'm going to be reading a short story from my book,
4
60 Beginner English Short Stories using the top 2,000 words in English.
5
This book is available on Amazon or my website www.learnenglishwithcamille.com.
6
If you have this book and you want to follow along, I am on page 132.
7
So this story is called Paris in Paris and it's a really fun story.
8
I hope you like it.
9
I'm going to read the whole story
10
and then I'm going to go over it part by part
11
and at the end we will do a grammar tip and we will do a few multiple choice questions.
12
So each story in this book has five multiple choice,
13
five fill in the blank, and five matching exercises.
14
We won't have time to do all of those today.
15
So let's go ahead and get started.
16
Paris in Paris.
17
Paris is a college student from the US.
18
This semester she's studying abroad in Paris, France.
19
Yes, her name is Paris and now she lives in Paris.
20
She hears this joke every day.
21
Wait, your name is Paris and you're in Paris?
22
Oui, she says and smiles politely.
23
Paris is taking a French language class at the local university.
24
She knows some French, maybe A2 level.
25
She can order food, ask for directions, and say, I'm sorry I'm American.
26
She uses that one a lot.
27
In In class, her teacher speaks mostly in French.
28
Paris understands about 60%, well, maybe 50%.
29
Today, the teacher says, écrivez une petite présentation.
30
Paris writes a short presentation.
31
She writes about her hobbies, reading, coffee, and cats.
32
When she reads it out loud, she says, J'aime lire, boire du café, et chat.
33
The class laughs, not in a mean way, just surprised.
34
The teacher gently says, En français, j'aime les chats.
35
If you say, et chat, it sounds like you want to drink coffee and cats.
36
Paris turns bright red.
37
No, just coffee, not cats.
38
Later that day, she goes to a bakery.
39
She wants one croissant.
40
She says, je suis un croissant.
41
The baker looks confused.
42
Paris realizes she said, I am a croissant.
43
She laughs and corrects herself.
44
Je voudrais un croissant, back in her room Paris texts her mom good news I am not a croissant
45
and also I love it here she may mix up words
46
but she's learning and laughing
47
and that's the best way to do it okay maybe you
48
don't speak French that's okay throughout these 60 stories there's a few of them like this one
49
when I mixed in a tiny bit of French there's one with a tiny bit of Spanish
50
and a tiny bit of Italian just a little bit
51
and I'm curious to see if you're French speaking you obviously would have understood this more
52
and related to it in a fun way
53
and same for the other stories and I love languages
54
and language learning so I wanted to just include a tiny bit of it in this book.
55
So let's go ahead and start back from the beginning and I will explain things so you can understand.
56
So Paris is the name of a person.
57
If you didn't understand that, we can name our child Paris.
58
It's a girl name.
59
So Paris is a college student.
60
In America, we say college student, university student but it's very common to hear college which means after high school.
61
So when you're going to college usually you're around 18 years old.
62
So she's from the U.S the United States that's an abbreviation.
63
This semester she's studying abroad.
64
So in the U.S college is divided into two semesters.
65
So this semester would mean like one semester of classes.
66
I think it would be like half of the year.
67
So this semester, this half of the year, she's in Paris, France.
68
And yes, like you said, like you heard, her name is Paris.
69
And so a joke is something that is funny.
70
So people think it's funny because her name is Paris and she lives in Paris.
71
Okay so the word we it just means in French.
72
I'm sure you know it even if you don't speak French.
73
Yes it means yes so she smiles politely.
74
She smiles nicely.
75
She's taking a French language class at a local university.
76
So that means just a university right in town.
77
And then if you're watching this, Paris knows about A2 level French.
78
Maybe you know A2 level English.
79
So that means she can order food, ask for directions, and say, I'm sorry, I'm American.
80
I'm sure you can say that with your country too.
81
So if you're speaking English and you don't understand something, you can just say, I'm sorry,
82
I'm in whatever your nationality is wherever you're from
83
and that will give you some grace with people and they'll be like no worries no worries so okay
84
in class her French speaks mostly in French
85
so mostly means the majority most of it so in most of this story it's English, like 90% of this story is English,
86
there's just a tiny bit of French, right?
87
So Paris understands 60%, so we say when you see the little percentage sign,
88
we say percent, so 60%, well maybe, maybe is like you're guessing, you're not sure, maybe 50%,
89
maybe she understands little less.
90
So today the teacher says and then it's just a French line
91
which means write a little presentation and
92
so right after I say the English of that
93
so you guys can understand Paris writes a short presentation
94
so it's just a short thing presenting something that's what a presentation is.
95
She writes about her hobbies.
96
Hobbies are things you like to do.
97
So her hobbies are reading which right now we're reading.
98
I think everyone knows coffee and everyone knows cats.
99
So she reads out loud like I was doing with this story.
100
I was reading out loud and the French
101
that I have in there I basically had her make a little mistake in French
102
and the class laughed because it was funny
103
but it wasn't like in a mean way like oh you
104
are a dumb girl no it was just like oops
105
that was funny because in language learning we make silly mistakes
106
and it's good to laugh at ourselves and not get stressed out about it
107
so in this story she says that she likes to drink coffee
108
and cats so that was like the humor of it
109
and she turns bright red meaning her cheeks when we
110
when our cheeks turn red that means we are embarrassed something happened
111
and so she's like no no no i don't like drinking cats just coffee okay
112
so later that day she goes to a bakery a bakery is a place
113
that sells bread and usually sweet treats anything that you would put in the oven we call that bakery like cookies cakes,
114
muffins, all of that would be categorized as bakery and in English we say croissant, croissant.
115
I know it's not the French pronunciation but that is how we say it.
116
So she said I am a croissant, another little part of humor in the story.
117
I hope you guys like my humor.
118
I like to just have fun when writing these.
119
So she realizes meaning she's like oh my gosh she realized
120
what she just said she was aware of what she just said
121
and that's when she corrected herself and ordered a croissant in the correct way
122
so that would be the equivalent in English of saying like yeah I am a croissant
123
or I am cake
124
or I am a muffin that's what she did in French instead of I want or I would like.
125
And then she corrects herself.
126
It's good as a language learner to correct yourself if you recognize
127
that you said something wrong oh no problem just change it up.
128
So back in her room Paris texts her mom so I think everybody knows what texting is
129
on your cell phone you message somebody you text them
130
and she says she she tells her mom she's not a croissant
131
and that she loves it in paris um so yeah
132
that is the story the grammar tip like i mentioned there's
133
32 grammar tips is using the present simple verb tense and we use that tense to talk about habits,
134
routines, facts, or things that are generally true.
135
For example, I use this notebook every day.
136
Use is the present simple verb tense.
137
Or she goes to class in the morning.
138
Goes.
139
They read before bed.
140
Read.
141
So that is the present simple.
142
We're going to go on to a couple of multiple choice questions.
143
These are on page 134.
144
So I think you're going to get these right.
145
If you don't, maybe go watch the video again.
146
Take some notes.
147
Okay.
148
Where is Paris studying?
149
A London, B Rome, C Paris.
150
If you want you can write these answers in the comments too.
151
The answer is C Paris.
152
Remember the name of the story Paris and Paris?
153
Okay we're going to go to another one.
154
Do you remember what level is her French?
155
A. She doesn't speak any.
156
B. Advanced.
157
C. A2.
158
Give you guys just a second.
159
And by the way, at the end of all the stories, I have the answer key.
160
So then you can go and make sure that your answers are correct.
161
And it is A2.
162
Okay, so let's go to one more.
163
What does she accidentally say at the bakery?
164
Does she say, I eat cats, I want 10 croissants, I am a croissant?
165
Let me know this one in the comments, and I'll let you know if you're correct.
166

이 레슨에 대해

"Read with me in Beginner English - Paris in Paris"
