If getting a shadowing practice video from me here on YouTube once a month, maybe twice, is just not enough for you,
16
then I'm happy to share that I have started doing weekly live shadowing practices in my online learning community,
17
Next Level English.
18
So the description of this video.
19
When you join, it's a monthly subscription to be a part of a community where you get access to live shadowing practices with me,
20

21

22
and of course, direct messaging with me so I can address all of your English questions.
23
So if that sounds interesting to you, check out the link in the description.
24
And I would love to see you in my community, get to know you and help you personally on your journey to English fluency.
25
All right, without further ado, let's start our shadowing practice today.
26
So the structure is going to be the same as always.
27
First, repeat after me, and then shadow what I say.
28
So you say it at the exact same time as me, matching my intonation, pronunciation, rhythm.
29
And this is going to help you overall with your English fluency, which includes feeling more confident when you're speaking English.
30
And I'm going to point out some specific pronunciation tips along the way.
31
So overall, it's just really going to help you with your English skills.
32
Now, contractions that you might have some questions about how to pronounce them or how to quickly speak them in English. So
33
I've come up with a story that has loads of contractions in there
34
and I will point out each one to you so that you can feel confident using them when you speak English.
35
Alright guys, let's get started.
36
English made easy with Claire.
37
So first, repeat after me.
38
I thought I'd wake up early today.
39
Thank you.
40
I thought I'd wake up early today.
41
I told myself I'd go for a run.
42
I told myself I'd go for a run.
43
"Make a healthy breakfast." Make a healthy breakfast.
44
and start my day right.
45
and start my day right.
46
Awesome.
47
So the one contraction that we see in this first section is "eyed." And that, of course, is the words "eye" and "would" contracted together.
48
And we pronounce this Eyed.
49
I'd I thought I'd wake up early today.
50
Thank you.
51
I told myself, I'd go for a run.
52
Thank you.
53
Alright, let's shadow this all together.
54
Say it with me.
55
"I thought I'd wake up early today.
56
I told myself I'd go for a run.
57
make a healthy breakfast, and start my day right.
58
All right, repeat.
59
I would have done all of that.
60
I would have done all of that.
61
If my alarm hadn't betrayed me,
62
If my alarm hadn't betrayed me, For some reason, It didn't go off.
63
For some reason, it didn't go off.
64
All right, here we have three different contractions.
65
Would've.
66
which is would and have, Would've.
67
Would've.
68
So make sure that it is a voiced /v / sound very quickly at the end, Would've.
69
Would've.
70
And hadn't that's had and not together.
71
Hadn't And at the end here, in rapid speech especially, we have that stopped T sound.
72
So not "hadn't" but hadn't.
73
Hadn't.
74
So again in a lot of my shadowing videos I point out the stopped t
75
because it is a big question for a lot of people
76
especially in the American English accent we stop our t's a lot
77
when they're in the middle of the word or at the end of the word.
78
It almost sounds like a d sound or you can just think of the sound stopping and we have Didn't.
79
Didn't.
80
which is did and not.
81
Again, we have this stop T at the end.
82
This N' sound doesn't need to be overcomplicated,
83
and it's probably a little bit easier to Learn it within the phrase.
84
It didn't go off.
85
It didn't go off.
86
You can hear how the sound stops.
87
didn't.
88
didn't go off.
89
Okay, let's shadow this section.
90
Say it with me.
91
I would have done all of that.
92
if my alarm hadn't betrayed me.
93
For some reason, It didn't go off.
94
All right, repeat after me.
95
Instead, I didn't get up on time.
96
Instead, I didn't get up on time.
97
I didn't run.
98
I didn't run.
99
and I've only had coffee instead of food.
100
and I've only had coffee instead of food.
101
Okay, again, we have the contraction didn't, so more opportunity to practice that one.
102
But we also have I've.
103
which is I have.
104
I've I've So let's shadow this all together.
105
Instead, I didn't get up on time.
106
I didn't run.
107
and I've only had coffee instead of food.
108
Repeat.
109
I keep thinking I'll do all that tomorrow.
110
I keep thinking, I'll do all that tomorrow.
111
Thank you.
112
Thank you but I've said that before.
113
But I've said that before.
114
So I've got great intentions.
115
So I've got great intentions.
116
They just haven't turned into actions yet.
117
They just haven't turned into actions yet.
118
Okay, the contractions we have here are I'll, I'll
119
and the l sound here can be a little bit tricky for some people
120
but don't overthink it you don't need to necessarily position the l too far back in the throat
121
if your native language tends to have very forward l's you can still keep the l quite forward i'll i'll
122
that works in english as well and in rapid speech it ends up sounding like i'll "I'll" instead of "I'll"
123
We have All.
124
All.
125
I'll do all that tomorrow.
126
We have "Ive" again, but I've said that before.
127
but I've said that before.
128
in rapid speech you might not really hear that that voiced sound, but I've said that, right?
129
But I've said that, but I've said that.
130
So it's easier.
131
This is why shadowing practice is so good.
132
It's easier to learn it in the context of the whole phrase.
133
And then that pronunciation really starts coming.
134
And finally, we have the contraction haven't.
135
which is have and not.
136
Haven't.
137
haven't.
138
And again, we have that n apostrophe t ending that Sounds like it just stops in American English pronunciation anyway.
139
Haven't. Have it.
140
And one last thing I want to say, I just want to point out, you can see here, I've got great intentions.
141
I've got.
142
The phrase I've got has the same meaning as I have.
143
You can either say I have got or I have, and they mean the same thing, but you will hear a lot of native speakers use this phrase.
144
I've got.
145
"great intentions" or "I've got work tomorrow." It's just a phrase that we commonly use.
146
So that's a good one to also have in your back pocket.
147
Okay, let's shadow this final section all together.
148
I keep thinking, I'll do all that tomorrow.
149
But I've said that before.
150
So, "I've got great intentions." They just haven't turned into actions yet.
151
Okay, let's take this entire story and shadow the whole thing together without stopping.
152
So here is the part where you can repeat this as many times as you need to.
153
Pause the video, slow it down, whatever you need to do.
154
Keep this one as a regular practice so you can really get used to pronouncing these contractions in a real world context.
155
Here we go.
156
Thank you.
157
"I thought I'd wake up early today.
158
I told myself I'd go for a run, Make a healthy breakfast.
159
and start my day right.
160
I would have done all of that.
161
If my alarm hadn't betrayed me, For some reason, it didn't go off.
162
Instead, I didn't get up on time.
163
I didn't run.
164
and I've only had coffee instead of food.
165
I keep thinking, I'll do all that tomorrow.
166
But I've said that before.
167
"So I've got great intentions." They just haven't turned into actions yet.
168
All right guys, thank you so much again for joining me for today's shadowing practice.
169
