1
Today we are going to talk about something many English learners ask me.
2
How can I stop translating in my head?
3
How can I start thinking in English?
4
Hello everyone, welcome back!
5
Maybe you understand English well.
6
You know grammar, you know a lot of vocabulary.
7
But when you try to speak, everything feels slow.
8
And you translate every sentence from your language into English.
9
Does that sound like you?
10
In this video, I want to explain what thinking in English really means.
11
What academic research actually says about it.
12
And most importantly, how you can train your brain to think in English step by step.
13
I will also share my own experience of learning a second language to fluency.
14
I will tell you what actually helped me.
15
What does thinking in English really mean?
16
What it really means is this.
17
Your brain can access English words and phrases quickly and automatically without needing to search for them every time.
18
It's about access.
19
When you translate in your head, your brain does two jobs.
20
First, you think of the idea in your own language.
21
Then, you look for the English words.
22
That extra step takes time and that is why speaking feels slow and difficult.
23
Thinking in English means reducing that effort and this is exactly where research helps us understand what is happening.
24
what the research actually shows.
25
A recent study from 2024 looked specifically at what makes people fluent when they speak a second language.
26
The study has a really long name.
27
I'll put it here if you are interested in looking it up.
28
The researchers focused on something called cognitive fluency.
29
Let me explain.
30
In simple terms, they studied how quickly the brain can recognize and retrieve or bring back words in a second language.
31
Here's what they found some learners rely mainly on controlled processing that
32
means their brain slows down to search for words and check
33
choices the other learners show more automatic processing their brain
34
recognizes words faster and retrieves them with less effort and the
35
important result was this learners with more automatic word access spoke
36
faster with fewer pauses obviously the study did not say these speakers were more intelligent or that they knew more grammar and vocabulary.
37
No, it showed that their brains were simply better trained, trained to access English quickly.
38
So when we talk about thinking in English we are really talking about how good your brain is at finding English words without stopping to calculate.
39
Why translation slows you down.
40
Translation is not bad.
41
It is normal and at the beginning it is very useful.
42
But if translation becomes your main speaking strategy it creates problems.
43
The research helps explain why this feels tiring.
44
Controlled processing uses more mental energy.
45
That's why your speech may be correct, but slow, hesitant and unnatural.
46
Fluency improves when the brain doesn't need to stop and check every step.
47
When I learned my second language, French, I translated everything at first.
48
every sentence every thought I could speak but it felt really heavy and I was always behind in the conversation.
49
What changed everything for me was repetition and exposure.
50
How much time I spent listening to my second language.
51
I started hearing the same phrases again and again I stopped
52
building sentences word by word I started using ready-made patterns and slowly my
53
brain adapted not because I tried to think in my second language nothing was forced but because I used it
54
often and naturally how to train your brain to think in English
55
now let's talk about practical advice you can actually use work
56
on collocations your brain does not like isolated words lists of words I
57
say this all the time it likes predictable patterns a collocation is a predictable
58
combination of words for example we can say heavy rain but not big
59
rain because it doesn't sound right heavy and rain go together when
60
you learn phrases collocations like make a decision heavy rain take
61
responsibility your brain starts to anticipate the next word this reduces
62
effort and speeds up word retrieval exactly what the research shows fluent speakers do better
63
below in the description and the comments you can download a free pdf of 100 english
64
collocations i have made for you learn them use shadowing shadowing means
65
listening and repeating immediately out loud no translation no analysis just reaction this
66
is one of the main techniques i used to become fluent in french this trains your brain to move from controlled processing to more automatic processing.
67
This is exactly what we want to be able to think in English.
68
Make sure you are speaking as much as you can, either with a partner or alone, every day if possible.
69
Speaking, even with mistakes, forces your brain to find the words faster.
70
And faster retrieval is what builds fluency and thinking in English.
71
Use English stories for input.
72
This is exactly why I post two story videos every month on this channel.
73
You don't need to understand every word.
74
In fact, understanding 60 or or 70% is good.
75
It pushes your brain to predict meaning, use context and fill in the gaps.
76
This is how your brain learns to connect ideas directly to English without translation.
77
You need English input every day.
78
Give yourself a realistic goal.
79
Thinking in English is not a switch.
80
It's a gradual change.
81
Some days you will translate, some days you won't.
82
That's normal.
83
The goal is not perfection.
84
The goal is less effort and more flow.
85
Try and keep that in mind.
86
So thinking in English isn't a myth.
87
I know because I think in my second language.
88
Research shows that fluency grows when your brain becomes faster at accessing words.
89
If you train that speed through repetition, patterns and real use, your brain adapts.
90
And one day, you won't be thinking about English at all.
91
You will just be speaking.
92
I will leave you a link below to a PDF with 100 English collocations and also a link to a video I made about some of the things that I did to become fluent in my second language.
93
If this video has helped you, make sure you subscribe so I can help you more this year.
94
I'll see you in the next video.
95
Take care.

  • Think in English: 영어로 생각하기 방법을 연습하세요.
  • Access words quickly: 단어를 빠르게 접근할 수 있게 훈련하세요.
  • Reduce effort: 생각의 과정을 간소화하여 노력을 줄이세요.
  • Use collocations: 어휘를 조합해 문장을 자연스럽게 만들어보세요.
  • Practice daily:
