1
I want you to know this, remember this, there is no such thing as failure.
2
Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction.
3
It doesn't matter how far you might rise, at some point you are bound to stumble because if you're constantly doing what we do,
4
raising the bar, if you are constantly pushing yourself higher, higher, the law of averages, not to mention the myth of Icarus,
5
predicts that you will at some point fall.
6
And when you do, I want you to know this.
7
Remember this.
8
There is no such thing as failure.
9
Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction.
10
Now, when you're down there in a hole, it looks like failure.
11
So this past year, I had to spoon feed those words to myself.
12
And when you're down in the hole, when that moment comes it's really okay to feel bad for a little
13
while give yourself time to mourn what you think you may have lost
14
but then here's the key learn from every mistake
15
because every experience encounter and particularly your mistakes are there to cheat you
16
and force you into being more of who you are
17
and then figure out what is the next right move
18
and the key to life is to develop an internal moral emotional GPS
19
that can tell you which way to go
20
and in 1986 I launched my own television show with a relentless determination to succeed at first
21
I was nervous about the competition and then I I became my own competition, raising the bar every year,
22
pushing, pushing, pushing myself as hard as I knew.
23
Sound familiar to anybody here?
24
Eventually, we did make it to the top, and we stayed there for 25 years.
25
The Oprah Winfrey Show was number one in our time slot for 21 years, and I have to tell you,
26
I became pretty comfortable with that level of success.
27
But a few years ago, I decided, as you will at some point, that it was time to recalculate,
28
find new territory, break new ground.
29
So I ended the show and launched OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network.
30
The initials just worked out for me.
31
So one year later, after launching on,
32
nearly every media outlet had proclaimed that my new venture was a flop.
33
Not just a flop, but a big bold flop, they call it.
34
I can still remember the day I opened up USA Today and read the headline,
35
Oprah not quite standing on her own.
36
I mean really USA Today now that's the nice newspaper
37
it really was this time last year the worst period in my professional life I was stressed
38
and I was frustrated and quite frankly I was I was actually I was embarrassed
39
and the words came to me trouble trouble don't last always from that hymn, this too shall pass.
40
And I thought I am gonna turn this thing around and I will be better for it.
41
So I'm here today to tell you I have turned that network around.
42
And as a young girl from rural Mississippi I learned long ago
43
that being myself was much easier than pretending to be Barbara Walters.
44
although when I first started
45
because I had Barbara in my head I would try to sit like Barbara talk like Barbara move like Barbara
46
and then one night I was on the news reading the news
47
and I called Canada Canada and
48
that was the end of me being Barbara I cracked myself up on TV couldn't stop laughing
49
and my real personality came through
50
and I figured out oh gee I can be a much better Oprah than I could be a pretend Barbara.
51
But no matter what challenges or setbacks or disappointments you may encounter along the way,
52
you will find true success and happiness if you have only one goal.
53
There really is only one, and that is this.
54
To fulfill the highest, most truthful expression of yourself as a human being.
55
You want to max out your humanity.
56
by using your energy to lift yourself up, your family, and the people around you.
57
Theologian Howard Thurman said it best.
58
He said, don't ask yourself what.. the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that.
59
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
60
I have to say
61
that the single most important lesson I learned in 25 years talking every single day to people was
62
that there is a common denominator in our human experience.
63
Most of us, I tell you, we don't want to be divided.
64
What we want, the common denominator that I found in every single interview, is we want to be validated.
65
We want to be understood.
66
I've done over 35 ,000 interviews in my career and as soon as that camera shuts off
67
Everyone always turns to me and inevitably in their own way ask this question.
68
Was that okay?
69
I heard it from President Bush.
70
I heard it from President Obama.
71
I've heard it from heroes and from housewives.
72
I've heard it from victims and perpetrators of crimes.
73
I even heard it from Beyonce and all of her Beyonce -ness.
74
She finishes performing, hands me the microphone and says, was that okay?
75
They all want to know one thing.
76
Was that okay?
77
Did you hear me? Do you see me?
78
Did what I say mean anything to you?
79
From time to time you may stumble, fall.
80
You will for sure count on this no doubt you will have questions
81
and you will have doubts about your path but I know this
82
if you're willing to listen to be guided by
83
that still small voice
84
that is the GPS within yourself to find out what makes
85
you come alive you will be more than okay you will be happy you will be successful and
86
you will make a difference in the world
