1
hi I'm Mimi a Japanese digital artist in this  video I show you how I color and render using Procreate i'll be covering the brushes I use  layer structure tips and tricks and my entire
2
sketch to render process first let me talk  about the steps i'm going to break down my rendering process into five steps which are  sketch base color lighting adding colors and
3
refining and rendering and details first let  me explain what I do in each steps with this ball like I just said there are five steps in  my rendering process first I make the sketch
4
which is very simple then I fill it with the  base color i like using a nice midtone color as the base color so I can add the lighting later  then I pick a lighter color and add the lighting
5
in this step I like to try some different  lightings and see which one I like the most for this ball I decided to go with  this lighting then I add more colors
6
to paint the ambient light and the reflected light
7
i also pick a saturated color and add it  between the light and the shadow lastly I add details and finishing touches i also use  different blending modes to enhance the lighting
8
and it's done it looks complex if you look at the  finished artwork but it's really not that complex if you break it into different steps before we  start the sketch to render process I want to
9
explain my layer structure and the brushes you  use i usually use around 20 layers and they can be separated into three big categories which  are background character and adjustments for
10
this piece I used two layers for the background  12 layers for the character and six layers for the adjustments two layers for the background  are very simple one is for the sky and the other
11
is for the flower petals for the character I have  one for the hair in the back then one for the skin
12
one for the eyes and eyebrows one  for the shirt one for the hair in the front one for the sketch/line art one  for the bag and the horns two for the arms
13
and lastly three for all the details
14
then I like to add some layers  in different blending modes on top of other layers for this piece  I used three at layers one screen layer and one hard light layer i add  these layers to enhance the lighting
15
all right that's it for the layers now let me  explain about the brushes i use three brushes which are script medium brush and medium hard  brush in Procreate they are default brushes so
16
you can find similar ones in other softwares  i use script for everything from sketching to rendering medium brush is a basic airbrush and I  mostly use it as the smud brush to smud the crisp
17
lines I draw with script medium hard brush is a  bit more crisp than medium brush and the opacity changes depending on pen pressure i use it for  sketching but mostly for coloring and rendering
18
now we know what I do in each  steps how many layers I use and what brushes I use we are ready to  start the sketch to render process
19
i use medium hard brush to make the rough  sketch it's easier for me to use a thicker brush for sketching because I don't have to  pay attention to the details too much that way when I start sketching I like to draw  some different poses and brainstorm ideas
20
you can see this pose looks a lot different  from the one in the finished artwork i changed my mind and started drawing a different pose now this is the pose that I  decided to go with as you can tell
21
the warp tool can be really useful to adjust the pose with and I like to use  it when I make the sketch
22
now I'm going to use script  brush to refine the sketch it might look like I'm making the line art over  the sketch but I'm still drawing on the same
23
layer i'm going to keep this layer throughout  my entire drawing process and keep refining the lines as I render so it's the sketch layer  right now but it's going to be like the line art
24
layer at the same time i'm drawing more crisp  lines using a script brush and I'm also using the eraser to erase imperfections to clean up  the lines during this step I don't really
25
need to focus on drawing perfect lines because I  just need these lines as the guide to draw with
26
now the sketch is done now I'm going to apply base colors
27
for the base colors I use midtone colors that  are not too bright or too dark i'm going to use lighter colors to draw lighting later  so the base colors need to be dark enough
28
i also make sure they're not too saturated  because I'll be adding saturated colors later on i usually pick colors from the  middle part in the color panel
29
i'm creating new layers under  the sketch layer and applying the colors on them so I already have  these different layers in this step
30
i'm just going to continue filling all the  parts except the details like the accessories
31
and it's done all right now I'm going to pick up lighter  colors and add in lighting first I wanted
32
to place the light source behind the  character and see how it would look
33
so imagine the light is hitting her from the  behind i thought it would look nice but I wanted the lighting to have more of a bright and sunny  feel so I erased what I drew and now I'm going to
34
add light from a different direction now imagine  the light is hitting her from the top right
35
so I'm just going to add the lighter colors  to anywhere that's facing the light source like the top of the head and the chest when you  draw lighting like this it's easier to work on
36
it if you alpha lock the layers that way you  don't have to worry about drawing outside of the base colors here you can see I forgot to  alpha lock and I painted outside of the hair
37
i'm just continuing to place colors  to the areas where the light hits and we're done with the lighting here's the before  and after lighting makes a lot of difference but
38
what I did is actually very simple so I just  used one color for each part and roughly added it to the areas where the light should hit so  I'm still only using two colors for each part
39
i'm now going to add more colors to paint  ambient light and reflected light this step adds more dimension to the illustration i'm also  going to refine the lines I drew on the sketch
40
layer you can see I'm erasing the lines I  drew before on the sketch layer then I'm adding more colors on the coloring layers  to make everything look cleaner and nicer
41
i'm going to clean up the hair now i'm  just erasing the lines on the sketch layer and refining the shapes on the coloring  layer then redraw the outline on the sketch
42
layer i basically just repeat this process  throughout my entire rendering process
43
i also like to add details like  accessories in this step to have a better idea of what this piece  is going to look like as a whole
44
now I'm using more darker colors  to refine the hair a bit more here
45
I just created another layer  to roughly paint the sky lastly I use the curve tool to adjust the  value of the character i'm making the shadows
46
even darker to make the character stand out  more against the sky and this step is done
47
what I'm going to do now is to add more  details and enhance the lighting I drew in the previous steps when I render  I always pay attention to the three sources of light which are primary light  ambient light and reflected light the
48
primary light is the main light source in  the scene the ambient light has effect on the shadows and it's basically reflecting  the color of the surrounding environment
49
the reflected light is the light that's bouncing  off the ground and is striking the object you're drawing i like to use bluish colors for the  ambient light and orangey colors for the reflected
50
light but I choose different colors depending on  the scene I'm drawing if you look at the hair for example there is the lightest color which is for  the primary light then there is the darker color
51
for the shadow and in the shadow there is the  bluish ambient light and the orangey reflected light as well i have the same combination of  colors for the skin and for everything else
52
so now I'm going to start rendering but what I'm  going to focus on is to enhance those three lights that I just talked about while refining and adding  details i started off with drawing the folds
53
on the shirt i like to keep the number of the  layers as low as possible so I draw on just one layer for each part most of the time for the  shirt I'm drawing on one normal layer right now
54
I'm using script brush to draw and medium  brush to smud if the edges feel too harsh and then I wanted to darken the shadow on the arm  so I created a multiply layer on top of the normal
55
layer for the arm i created another multiply layer  for the hair to add darker colors on it multiply layers can be useful if you want to darken  the color of something without changing
56
what's already been drawn but like I said  before I like to keep the layers simple so I like to merge the multiply layer into  the normal layer once I'm done drawing on it
57
now I've merged the layers for the hair and  I'm back to drawing on just one normal layer
58
moving on to the back now i'm still using  script brush and the eraser to refine the shapes and lines there's no set way for me to  render and it's hard for me to explain what
59
exactly I do but I just keep adding details  and darker colors to enhance the lighting
60
let's move on to the bows now I'm adding  darker colors to draw the folds then I've refined the lines and now I'm adding  some light you can also see that I'm
61
adding an orangey color as the reflected  light to the areas that are facing down now I'm adding something that I  didn't draw in the previous steps
62
it's something that I do pretty often but  it just because it's easier for me to make the sketch and do base colors and lighting  without thinking about the small details
63
now I'm working on the accessories for  small details like them I don't separate the layers for the lines and colors  but instead I just draw the lines
64
and the colors all together on one normal layer
65
the character is looking pretty  good so let's add some flower petals
66
i also wanted to enhance the lighting a  bit more so I created an add layer on top of other layers it makes a lot of difference  as you can see I'm also darkening the bottom
67
right corner with a hard light layer and  adding a sunflare effect with an add layer
68
then I decided that I wanted to add the  other arm so I started off with drawing the shape of it with just two colors and then  I'm drawing the outline on the sketch/ line art
69
layer and it's done from now I'm just going  to keep working on the remaining details
70
if I want to add something like this little  bow on this shirt I draw the silhouette first and then add the outline it's the  same thing as what I did with the arm
71
okay we're almost there we just  need to render the charm on the back
72
and add some cute flowers on the hair
73
and lastly I just want to refine  the flower petals a bit more and we're done
74
thank you so much for watching um I  tried to fit as much information as I could and I really hope you learned  something useful but if you have any questions please leave a comment  and I'll do my best to answer them
75
all right well I will see  you in the next one bye-bye
