1
Has your kid ever wanted to be a spy or maybe write secret coded notes to their siblings or their friends?
2
Well, today I have an experiment for exactly that called secret friendship notes.
3
Hi everyone, I'm Emily Calandrelli, MIT engineer and host of Emily's Wonder Lab.
4
And on my channel, we learn about all things space and science.
5
So grab some turmeric because we are about to go on a mission.
6
Keep exploring.
7
And this sounds like.
8
Skate carrier.
9
And keep exploring.
10
Today for our secret friendship notes, we are going to draw a secret message with a baking soda solution, set it aside to dry,
11
and then once it's dry, we are going to reveal it with a turmeric solution.
12
Okay?
13
So for our baking soda solution, what you need is one cup of water plus one tablespoon of baking soda.
14
To draw your message, you'll want a few paintbrushes, and then later for your turmeric solution,
15
you want one half cup water with one teaspoon of turmeric.
16
And parents and adults, if you've worked with turmeric before, you know that it stains everything.
17
Fingers and counters and bowls and basically anything it touches.
18
So please exercise caution here.
19
It is why I have my tinfoil on the counter because I'm trying to save this counter from the turmeric.
20
So just be careful here.
21
So first, we are going to make our baking soda solution.
22
This is going to be our paint that we paint the secret message
23
that you're not going to be able to see after it dries.
24
So let's go ahead and do one cup of water.
25
Right in a bowl.
26
And now, let's add one tablespoon of baking soda.
27
Just like this.
28
And then go ahead and mix it up.
29
You'll notice that the baking soda won't completely dissolve in the water, and that's okay.
30
If you have a little bit of baking soda on the bottom, that's all right.
31
We're just trying to create as much of a baking soda solution as we can
32
because it's the baking soda that is the very key ingredient to our secret message here.
33
Once you've mixed that up about as good as you can, we're going to take our paintbrush and use this
34
and our baking soda solution to write our secret message on a piece of computer paper.
35
So I'm going to take one sheet of computer paper here,
36
set this aside and write my message here trying to get as much baking soda on your paintbrush as you can.
37
Tap it off.
38
You don't want it to be too wet.
39
Okay, now that I've written my secret message, I'm going to set it aside to dry.
40
It'll take between 10 minutes to an hour, really depending on how much water you use on your paper.
41
But if you want this message to be completely secret,
42
You want it to be completely dry because once it's completely dry because the baking soda is white
43
It's so hard to see this is the secret part of these secret friendship notes
44
So try to let it completely dry before you move on to the next step
45
Once your secret friendship note is dry
46
You can give it to a friend with the magic reveal paint and the magic reveal paint is our turmeric solution
47
So let's go ahead and make that we're going to do one half cup water there plus plus one teaspoon turmeric.
48
I'm using my one half teaspoon here because it fits in the turmeric because I'm just trying to avoid spills here.
49
One half teaspoon plus, plus one half teaspoon equals one teaspoon.
50
I'm gonna go ahead and mix this up.
51
Again, it'll be a little clumpy.
52
This is because turmeric is not soluble in water.
53
It's soluble in alcohol, but we're just gonna do our best here.
54
We just wanna suspend the turmeric in the water as best we can.
55
Now here's the fun part.
56
So we're going to take our turmeric solution
57
and with a big paintbrush you're going to tell your friend
58
that to reveal the secret message they just need to paint the paper with the magic reveal paint.
59
You just want to go ahead and paint the entire thing.
60
I'm going to take my secret message here and I'm just going to paint on top of it.
61
Because look at this.
62
It's very hard to see what this says.
63
Right?
64
What is my secret note saying?
65
I don't know.
66
Let's reveal it.
67
Here we go.
68
Look at that.
69
Look at the turmeric reacting with our baking soda here.
70
Do you see what's happening?
71
Look at this.
72
Everywhere that our turmeric is touching the paper, it's yellow, kind of what you would expect, like the color of turmeric.
73
But when it touches the part where we had baking soda, do you see the color it turned?
74
It turns red.
75
Why does that happen?
76
Well, it's because turmeric is something known as a natural pH indicator.
77
which means it changes colors when it's in the presence of an acid and a base.
78
What is baking soda?
79
Well, it's sodium bicarbonate or a base.
80
And so when turmeric interacts with baking soda, it turns red.
81
It goes from yellow to red to indicate that it is in the presence of a base.
82
Here's a trick to make your secret note even more secretive use cardstock
83
because cardstock doesn't absorb the water as much so you don't have those obvious ripples in the paper.
84
It takes a little longer for the water to dry but once it does it's even harder to see your message.
85
So let's go ahead and reveal this one.
86
Get my turmeric secret reveal paint on my paintbrush.
87
Watch with each brush stroke I'm revealing a part of my secret message.
88
You see what it says here?
89
It says, Stay curious and keep exploring.
90
You send your friend this message, but they have no idea what it says.
91
You tell them to reveal it with your magic turmeric paint.
92
Let's see.
93
You see what it says?
94
Meat in the treehouse.
95
Home.
96
And the best part is that your secret friendship note smells amazing.
97
Very spicy.
98
Smells great.
99
Thank you for making secret friendship notes with me.
