I'm doing more work on my home page

and I realized there's three things I forgot to include in my reset

that I generally include in my pages and my things these days

that are some modern CSS that I think you should probably include in yours as well.

So we're going to be diving in and looking what those are.

And the two of them involve short pages.

So let's go to a non-existing page because I don't have a lot of short pages.

You can see my footer is stuck to the top.

And if you want to fix that, the simplest way to do it, this depends on your own little bit on your structure.

In my case I have my header, my main, and then my footer at the bottom.

So this is going to work.

So what we can do is set a min block size and maybe you're setting a min height.

This is the logical variant.

The block size is min height.

So min block size and the idea with a min block size

and not just a block size is we want to set it as a constraint

so it can be that size or bigger if we have more content.

And I want to use 100 SVH.

And this is the one where like I think people are probably already including maybe VH here.

Some of you might be more cutting edge and doing using DVH, but you actually want to be using SVH.

And the reason for that, or this is I guess my opinion, but the reason I like doing SVH is because on phones, when you scroll,

if it's DVH when the scrolling stops it will repaint to get to the bigger size

because the UI elements that come in

and out I'll have a video on screen right now

that sort of illustrates this happening on a different video I did and

if you want to watch the video where I went into

in depth on these behaviors it will be linked in the description

so yeah SVH in my opinion especially for hero areas the top of the page is a much safer option

if you're scrolling down to things it's possible there the DVH might make more sense.

But for hero areas, top of the page stuff, in my opinion, SVH is a much safer option that prevents weird glitches from happening.

And that enables me to do a display of grid and then do a grid template rows.

I was gonna write columns, but it's rows.

And I want the first one to be auto, then a 1fr, and then an auto here as well.

So auto for that area, the main part of my page gets the 1fr, and then the footer gets the auto, which pushes the footer all the way to the bottom of the page.

I covered this in a video a really long time ago.

It's probably like six or seven years old at this point, but it's maybe five years old.

It's using grid.

I'm not entirely sure, but it works well.

I think I did a flex and grid example of that.

So if you want more details on how this is working, I'll include that below.

But I would just have this as your min block size.

100 SVH is like a sane reset, in my opinion, to have in your projects these days.

So that's the first one.

Now we're on a short page, and this leads us to the second one.

If you look at my navigation, if I go back to this page, and then I go here.

So when I'm going back and forth between these two pages, you'll notice that the navigation looks like it's like shifting back and forth.

And the reason for that is I'm on Chrome on Windows, which has a fixed scroll bar that you can see down the side there.

And the scroll bar distance has an effect on things.

So I should have, from the very start, had an HTML and a scroll bar gutter of stable.

And all that does is mean on pages where there is no scroll bar, it's still reserving the space for the scroll bar to be there.

So now when I jump back to the short page and then I go back, you'll notice the navigation doesn't jump anymore.

everything is stable as the name implies.

I don't see a reason not to do this, to be honest.

You can do it for the left and right side.

I'm not sure why you'd need to do that, but just the scroll bar gutter of stable seems like a pretty sane thing to do here.

And the other bonus of this, I'm going to include an article by Baramis down below that Chrome has started to, and I think the CSS Working Group has resolved to do this,

that if this is declared, 100VW, if you're using that, or VI for inline, will take into account the space of the scroll bar.

So it won't add extra like it used to and cause horizontal scrolling when scroll bars are visible.

So yeah, this one is a nice win already for just making content not jump around.

And it's a double win once 100VW will actually act like 100VW, though you probably still don't want to be declaring it.

I don't think there's lots of use cases for 100 VW or 100 VI, but every now and then you might need it.

So it will be more predictable once that becomes more widespread.

And you'll need to have this declared for that to work or an overflow Y of auto, I think, but you're not going to want that.

This is the better option.

You can stick with that one.

And a little bit of a random jump cut because we're in a different project of mine.

This is for my course platform CSS Demystified.

For some reason, I'm zoomed out.

I'm not sure why.

So built a custom course platform for my new course or the new version of CSS Demystified.

And in there, when we get to the modules here, you can see that if I click on these, they open and close because I'm using a details in summary.

I have a little animation running, which is causing a slight delay because it's waiting for those to turn.

But the reason it's doing that because normally here I removed it, but I already had this in and I'm doing this on my root.

You could put this on your HTML, on the root, even on the body, it's an inherited property.

So by putting it either on the root or the HTML element, you're basically enabling this site wide,

which is to do a interpolate size of allow keywords.

And by adding that here, now when I open these, they actually animate opened and closed instead, which I think is pretty cool, right?

I think it's a nice little thing that we can do right there.

And if I jump on over to my course here, which is where I'm doing it, you can see that I have my details, details content.

If you want to know how to do this, I've gone more in depth in another video looking specifically at these.

So I'll link that in the description below

because it's a little bit strange looking and I'm making sure this is supported if I'm going to do it.

And then I have a prefers reduced motion to include the animation only in there, but I'm going from a block size,

which is a height of zero to a block size of auto.

And the auto normally we wouldn't be able to transition to.

But with interpolate size allow keywords, it means we can now transition or animate to different intrinsic sizes, such as auto fit content,

min content, max content, and any others that I might be forgetting.

I've also put the transition behavior in here, which for this one is required because of the content visibility as well.

And actually in looking at this, there could be a case made to include this also

so at media prefers reduced motion no preference preference

and then we could move the interpolate size into there this

could be a good catch-all type of thing just to make sure

that you're not doing anything over the top for me this is like pretty aggressive animations

that i'm doing so that i would prefer not to happen

but there's sometimes it's more like micro animations that you're doing

so maybe you want to allow it

and only gate the specific things like I'm doing here

so that's up to you whether you want this just to be the default

or not I'm going to leave this here I don't have any micro animations

or interactions that are using it but I'd like to sort of have

that control of choosing where I'm disabling those or enabling them

and because this is like a lot of motion

or I did have it disabled at a specific place right

there the other thing with this really quickly is I've realized I need to update this a little bit

because when I've disabled it, there's that little delay that's there.

So I'm going to hunt that down and make sure there's no delayed animation.

I should have done a bit more testing on that.

But by the time you find this, if you do want to dive into the course, that will be fixed, hopefully.

And right before I let you go, I just realized that the reason that it was delayed, you can see there is no delay.

So if this was disabled, then this was running with the animation on it still.

So it was doing, you know, it was taking a long time to do its thing.

And I had to wait for that because we weren't able to transition it with this disabled.

So yeah, anyway, just to say that everything was completely fine and I didn't have any changes to make.
