1
Hey, it's TJ Halverson with Orthopedics This Week.
2
I'm talking to Travis Greenhall, the CEO of SurgenTech, to talk about a new technology they have in the OTW Technology Awards this year.
3
Travis, thanks for joining us again.
4
Why don't you tell us more about DuraShield?
5
TJ, thanks for having me.
6
And I appreciate you guys and what you're doing over there.
7
DuraShield is focused on preventing dural tears.
8
We all know it's a major risk, a major complication during a T-lift procedure.
9
Every surgeon has had it.
10
It's always a nightmare to deal with.
11
Right now, there's ways to fix a Dural tear, but not prevent it.
12
So that's what DuraShield is focused on.
13
It employs a device that allows you to tag the annulus with a silicone ribbon.
14
That silicone ribbon acts as a retractor and a guard, kind of like a bumper.
15
As opposed to have your first assist or your PA hold back with a Nurgert retractor, the Dura, the entire time, this allows you to go down and tag the annulus,
16
hold the Dura back.
17
And then you can also do the same on the contralateral side with the peripheral nerve root.
18
So it allows you to create a larger corridor to pass your instruments, provide adequate carpentry and pass larger implants, which is every surgeon's goal, right?
19
So we focused on that.
20
It's been years in the making.
21
The device has a depth stop.
22
It's fully disposable kit and it's safe, right?
23
That's our goal is to try to make things safe.
24
Every surgeon's had a dural tear, had to deal with the consequences of a dural tear.
25
Sometimes these things are longstanding as well too.
26
So if we could prevent a large percentage of those from happening, that would be phenomenal.
27
It's a great product
28
and hopefully you get it to market soon what do you
29
think the timeline is for getting it to market it's actually really close
30
so we have all the ip is filed we've received patents
31
and it's in with fda currently we are hoping for early fall
32
so it's on track and things are going well
33
but we're being optimistic it will be out early exciting exciting
34
well travis thanks again for joining us sharing more about durashield
35
sergentek just continues to i mean how many years in a
36
row have you guys been part of the tech awards innovation
37

38

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Awards submission: DuraShield from SurGenTec" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
