1
Before you come to Vietnam, listen to a local.
2
These tips can save you a lot of valuable time, legal charges, and even permanent re-entry ban in Vietnam.
3
Hi everyone, it's Minh Phu from Vietnam.
4
Welcome back to my channel.
5
For those of you who don't know me, I am your local buddy who spent around 5 years learning about Vietnam to give you the best hidden gems,
6
local food spots, and unique, insightful travel advice.
7
So in today's video, I'm gonna tell you the things
8
that you should not do in Vietnam if you want to have a smooth local experience.
9
And now, let's talk about the first thing that you should not do.
10
I would use the word affordable because cheap sounds cheap.
11
If you only see Vietnam as cheap, you start treating the experiences like they don't have value.
12
You over consume, you rush, and you don't really appreciate what's in front of you.
13
Fun fact, Vietnam is a developing country, so not everything is one dollar anymore.
14
Most of foreigners came to Vietnam thinking, I'm drinking three iced coffee a day like it's water, taking grab for a five minute walk because it's only one dollar,
15
and randomly walking to a cute cafe like I deserve this, and ordering food like I have four personalities.
16
As a Vietnamese, I'm happy to welcome tourists come to vietnam
17
but at the same time i want people to come here have respect
18
and open minds for the people the culture and the country itself
19
so yeah don't come to vietnam because it's cheap
20
if you really take time and put your heart
21
and your mind into it it's actually priceless
22
if you ask me how long the custom lines are in international airports in vietnam they're long.
23
They can take hours.
24
Due to the ongoing staff shortages across airplanes and airlines, the custom lines can be unpredictable and that can make you frustrated.
25
As a Vietnamese, I don't want you to have a bad first impression about Vietnam.
26
That's why I'm telling you to not join the endlessly long immigration line.
27
Instead, get a fast track.
28
It's around 30 US dollars but it save you tons of times and headaches.
29
The service people will contact you via WhatsApp and then
30
when you arrive they will escort you to VIP fast track and priority lane for the security checkup.
31
And if you order the premium service they will take care of the custom procedures, a chance handling the required paperwork,
32
collecting your luggage and assisting you all the way to the vehicle for a smooth exit from the airport.
33
I think it's gonna change your total experience when you come to Vietnam
34
and if you don't know where to book your fast track, I leave the link in the description down below so that you can book yours.
35
Vietnam is the sixth country in Southeast Asia and one of 43 countries worldwide to ban e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
36
Under According to Decree No. 371, Vietnam has implemented a comprehensive ban on production, sale, importation, and use of e-cigarettes,
37
vapes, and heated tobacco products to protect public health.
38
And if you're caught using one, you could be fined between 3 and 5 million Vietnam Đồng.
39
Premises owners allowing vaping can be fined up to 10 million Vietnam Đồng.
40
So yeah, the friendly Vietnamese staff is not your friends anymore when it comes to vaping.
41
But here's where it gets serious.
42
So if you get caught in for example bars,
43
hotels or clubs, the staff have the right to kick you out and the authorities can confiscate and destroy your device.
44
So yeah, you could lose your vape and still get fined.
45
Honestly, it's not worth it to pack your vape in your luggage.
46
Just leave it at home.
47
Your lungs and your wallet will thank you.
48
The roaming fees can cost you a fortune so don't use it.
49
Get an eSIM instead.
50
One of my favorite eSIM company is Silly who I also trust to be the sponsor for today's video.
51
I've been using Silly for my international trips
52
and I have stable strong internet connection all the way through
53
and I also recommend Silly to my friends who have smooth experiences with using the eSIM in Vietnam as well.
54
What I love the most about using an eSIM is that you have the internet right after you land.
55
Installing and activating an eSIM from Selly is also very easy and fast.
56
You can just go to settings, cellular and activate your new eSIM.
57
After connected, you don't need to rely on the airport wi-fi anymore.
58
You can use the internet to book a healing service
59
or navigate map or even use the translate to talk to the locals.
60
And if Vietnam is not your only destination, you can still use Silly because they provide affordable data plan in over 200 destinations.
61
I've asked Silly to give you an exclusive discount so
62
that you can save 15% on your data plan by going to silly.com slash pho to download the app
63
and apply the code pho at checkout.
64
Another local tip from me for your smooth trip in Vietnam.
65
As a Vietnamese, I still make this mistake.
66
Admit that staying in a busy area can be convenient and easy to walk around.
67
But I forgot that sleep is more important to me.
68
Without a good night's sleep, I don't think that I can do anything else.
69
If you're in Hanoi, please avoid the Ta Hii,
70
the Beer Street area or the Train Street area or avoid staying inside the Old Quarter.
71
It's very crowded in there.
72
And if you are in Ho Chi Minh City, please avoid staying in Mùi Việt area if you don't want your heart beats like Vinh Hàu's music.
73
Those spots usually have high foot traffic so it's harder for you to move around.
74
The prices are usually more expensive there.
75
And also, you know, Vietnamese people love partying and singing karaoke so it can be loud in both day and night.
76
Even though the Vietnamese government tried to ban the loud music at night, well you better save Gunsari.
77
Unless you want to party all night so just forget what I just said.
78
And also let me know in the comment down below
79
if you want me to make a video about where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.
80
But all of my favorite recommended hotels, places to eat and things to do, I included in my ebook so don't forget to check it out in the description box below
81
food poisoning is a risk in vietnam particularly from street food
82
with recent major outbreaks linked to salmonella in bánh mì resulting
83
in hundreds of hospitalizations in ho chi minh city yes i'm
84
your vietnamese news reporter key causes include poor sanitation improper cold storage
85
and handling practices especially in high turnover low-cost eateries even though authorities in ho chi man city stepped up inspection
86
and monitoring of food production you still need to be a smart traveler To avoid sickness,
87
you should pay attention to the color and the condition of the food.
88
Check the smell of the pate and other ingredients in bánh mi before consuming.
89
If any unusual odor or abnormal signs are detected like sour smell, slimy texture, or gas bubbles,
90
the food should not be eaten.
91
Period.
92
During this hot and humid season, you should avoid raw and cooked dishes,
93
coconut milk based dishes, and fermented food can spoil quickly if the temperatures reach from 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.
94
It's a great temperature and the best environment for bacterias to grow so be smart about it.
95
Make sure you eat at busy local stalls or restaurants where locals eat
96
and you can see if the cook is wearing gloves
97
or flies are not flying around the food or the surrounding is hygienic.
98
It's a good restaurant to go and if you want to be safer you should drink bottled water.
99
Well I feel like I sound like a mom now but it's okay it's for your own safety.
100
Oh and please don't just order bánh mi or phở
101
because that's the reason why I have this channel to show you other amazingly delicious food around Vietnam?
102
Let me know in the comment down below what your Vietnamese favorite food is.
103
When you come to Vietnam, please don't expect the service is as fast and professional like in your country.
104
In fact, in Hanoi, you have to behave to eat at some of the restaurants.
105
I shared my experience of eating at one of the most famous restaurants in Hanoi where the owner yells
106
and I explained the culture stories behind it.
107
In short, most of the restaurants in Vietnam are just short staffed
108
so they might seem like they're ignoring you but it's not the case.
109
You can learn some basic Vietnamese words like em ơi to get their attention
110
or nhà vệ sinh ở đâu where is the bathroom
111
if you have a stomach ache because you didn't listen to my previous advice.
112
Just kidding. But
113
Learning some Vietnamese can be very helpful along the way
114
and you can even impress some Vietnamese people as well So why not, right?
115
I made a video about learning Vietnamese words and phrases in 15 minutes So you can check it out right here
116
It looks fun on Instagram like oh I'm riding a motorbike around the Ha Giang Loop, but not until you're in the real traffic
117
Riding in Vietnam is an art and you need time to master the organized chaos.
118
Many foreigners say, oh it's just a bike, it's so small, I can handle it.
119
How hard can it be, right?
120
But riding here isn't about balance.
121
It's about reading traffic, predicting movement, and reacting fast.
122
If you hesitate for even one second, you can crash.
123
Not to mention that you need to know some cultural rules to avoid scams, finding a parking spot in a busy city,
124
and also you might have to deal with huge fines
125
if you get caught by a police if you don't have the proper driver's license.
126
I've been living in Vietnam for five years since I moved back from the States, but I still don't drive because it's just very convenient here.
127
I usually just go Grab, Bee or Seng SM.
128
Those are the top healing services in Vietnam to move around.
129
It's cheap, it's safe, and the locals driving you around and also behind the wheel, you can have a better look around the city.
130
However, if you're experienced, confident and have insurance, you can ride a bike to explore Vietnam from north to south.
131
I see some of my friends do that too and they had fun.
132
But just be careful.
133
Well, be careful with pretty girls that you meet on dating apps, especially those who ask you to meet at a bar for the first date
134
because they may be working for that bar and they're looking for customers.
135
Okay, so how does it work?
136
A scammer matches with a foreigner and quickly pushes to meet in person.
137
They insist on a specific bar or restaurant.
138
Once there, they order overpriced drinks or food without warning you and shortly after, they make an excuse like, oh i don't feel good
139
or oh my family members have some emergency i have to go home now
140
and then leave the victim is then stuck with a huge bill
141
and the restaurant can intimidate or pressure the victim to pay the bill
142
so here are the right flags
143
that you can look for number one is the inconsistence of specific
144
and obscure venue they refuse to meet at the place
145
that you choose but they want to meet at a specific bar or restaurant.
146
The second right flag is a quick progression.
147
They message you very fast and they eagerly want to meet you immediately.
148
Yeah, that's not a good sign.
149
Number three is too good to be true.
150
The person seems overexcited or interested in you despite a difference in age or background.
151
Number four is immediate suggestion on alcohol or expensive dining.
152
So the idea involves ordering lots of expensive drinks early on.
153
That's not a good sign either.
154
And the last sign can be like a gray area
155
or a yellow flag is when they refuse to be picked up and they want to meet you at the exact location.
156
So how can you protect yourself?
157
First, you can choose the venue.
158
Always insist on meeting in the public and if she wants to choose the venue, make sure you verify that location.
159
Read the reviews, ask your friends, do your research on any mentions about scams or stuff like that.
160
Last but not least, you should trust your instinct.
161
If it's too good to be true, buy me a scam!
162
You think it's common sense right?
163
But I've seen so many people still mess this up.
164
And honestly, I get it.
165
The food is good, the coffee is so addictive, and the life is so good here in Vietnam that you completely lose track of time.
166
You came for two weeks and suddenly it's been two months and you're like, honestly, I live here now.
167
Yeah, that's illegal.
168
Even overstaying just one day can get you fined and if you push it longer, it can go up over to 1500 US dollars.
169
And the worst part is not just about money.
170
They can literally deport you and even blacklist you.
171
Imagine falling in love you in Vietnam but Vietnam is like thank you
172
but don't come back and honestly I would be heartbroken
173
if you made it this far but still haven't subscribed
174
so hit that subscribe button and turn on the bell for more helpful tips about Vietnam
175
so yeah those are the things that you should not do in Vietnam
176
