I'm about to do something insane, guys.
38
I'm about to interview some of the richest women in the entire world, including Sarah Blakely, the youngest self-made female billionaire in the entire world.
39
And I'm not kidding.
40
Right now, I am standing in Beverly Hills, one of the richest zip codes on the planet, and I'm going to be going around to find some of the richest women
41
that live here to figure out how they built their fortunes.
42
But we're just getting started, you guys.
43
Because after this, I'm going to be flying across the country to Atlanta to go meet
44
and interview one of the richest female billionaires on Earth to figure out how she turned just $5,000 into a billion-dollar empire,
45
making her the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world
46

57
Real quick, can I show you my channel?
58
That way you can see it.
59
You guys, I could not get the game from her, but she said doing $2 billion in revenue.
60
That's just to put in perspective for you the kind of women, the kind of people that are out here that we're gonna be running into on these streets of Beverly Hills.
61
I wanted that one bad, but we couldn't get it, you guys.
62
But I know that they're out here, and I am not gonna stop until I get a billion dollars worth of game for you all.
63
Come on.
64
Excuse me, ma'am.
65
How did you get rich?
66
How did I get rich?
67
Yes.
68
Working really, really hard.
69
And what line of business?
70
Are you a business owner?
71
Finance.
72
You were in finance?
73
On Wall Street or what?
74
That I can't tell you.
75
Wait, so real quick.
76
I grew a channel of 17 million followers.
77
I've been interviewed 25 billionaires in the last four years, like Mark Cuban, Michael Rubin.
78
I asked successful people how they made it for the younger generation.
79
So I wanted to ask you, if there's one piece of financial advice that you learned throughout your career that you could instill in the younger generation, what would that be?
80
Invest in things you understand.
81
Like what?
82
What was that for you?
83
What was the best vehicle?
84
Real estate.
85
Did you like residential or commercial?
86
What did you like?
87
Residential.
88
Why is that?
89
Because the timing was perfect for it.
90
And when did you buy real estate primarily?
91
This goes back to the 90s.
92
What's the best city to buy real estate in today's world?
93
Oh, LA.
94
Anywhere where there's coastal properties.
95
A lot of people like red states.
96
Well, of course, because of politics.
97
So red states obviously are better because of the tax breaks.
98
Did you ever own a business?
99
Yes.
100
What was the biggest issue you had?
101
A billion dollars.
102
A billion dollars?
103
Yes.
104
Are you serious?
105
Yes.
106
business?
107
No. Nobody doubted you?
108
No. Why not?
109
Somebody that did cost them a lot of money.
110
So it's safe to say that it's not a smart idea to bet against you?
111
Absolutely not a good idea.
112
Yeah.
113
Absolutely not.
114
Listen, all is fair and I believe in doing things fairly
115
and that business can be a win-win for anybody
116
but you should never get in a situation where you think that somebody else is not worthy of whatever.
117
Everybody deserves a break and a chance to prove themselves in business.
118
What was the biggest challenge that you face running companies?
119
Because it's hard.
120
You have to you boys why it was hard to get them why
121
because employees you have to hire people
122
that you trust men are linear they're direct they're clear thinkers
123
they're easy to take care of women are emotional difficult to do business with
124
so did you hire a lot happens to be the truth
125
so did you not hire a lot of women employees then
126
no why are you serious yes I'm serious even as a boss woman yes you hire women
127
that have men's instincts for business you mentioned buying real estate
128
did you buy a lot of real estate yes you did yes With each of your properties, did you have an LLC for each property?
129
Yes.
130
How many LLCs do you own?
131
Over 50.
132
Over 50 LLCs?
133
And how important was that?
134
Oh, it's critical.
135
I mean, here's the thing.
136
An LLC is a veil of protection and everybody should understand their taxes.
137
It will serve you for the rest of your life.
138
For every business that I've started and every property that I've acquired starting this year, I've been using an LLC.
139
Super smart.
140
The company I used to start my business and buy my properties was called Busy.
141
I started my LLC through them and it was one of the smartest decisions because it protects you.
142
I'm going to look at busy.
143
You said you're 62 today.
144
Yes.
145
If me and you die tomorrow and you had one more message for the younger generation, what would that be?
146
Live while you're alive.
147
What's that mean?
148
Enjoy your life.
149
Guys, we just interviewed, I think, a billionaire out here in Beverly Hills.
150
And did you hear what she said?
151
For every one of her businesses, for each one of her real estate properties, she has an LLC.
152
She's got not one, not two, but 50 LLCs, you guys.
153
That is insane.
154
And that should tell you something because, look, billionaires, they don't leave anything up to chance.
155
They structure everything
156
because the right entity protects their personal assets saves them a ton of money on taxes
157
and sets them up to scale And that's exactly why I used busy
158
when I was starting out
159
and it helped me build a multi-million dollar business They make
160
it insanely easy to start a business you guys whether it's an LLC
161
or an escort You can literally get everything handled in like under 10 minutes
162
and it's super affordable It is way cheaper
163
and way easier than trying to go hire a super expensive lawyer
164
or an accountant to set up your business
165
So guys trust me on this stop what you're doing be like the smart entrepreneurs be like the rich entrepreneurs
166
and use busy to set up your business today all you
167
have to do is go down to the link in the
168
description of this video to start your business to be busy today
169
but with that being said let's get back to the video all right you guys
170
so we're at our next spot out here in beverly hills
171
and a maybach just put up to the valley out here
172
so i'm gonna go up
173
and see what they did to get rich let's go see
174
who it is you guys come on excuse me ma'am ma'am question for you how old were you
175
when you became a millionaire I'm not a millionaire.
176
No?
177
No, I'm a billionaire.
178
You're a billionaire?
179
Yes.
180
Are you actually?
181
Yes.
182
How did you become a billionaire?
183
Well, working hard, shaping eyebrows.
184
So you're in the beauty business?
185
Yes, I'm in the beauty business.
186
I own a company called Anastasia Beverly Hills.
187
Are you serious?
188
Yeah.
189
How long have you been a business owner?
190
Wow, I started in 1997. Are you self-made?
191
Yes, totally.
192
So you don't come from a lot of money?
193
No, I came here from a communist regime from Romania, and I didn't speak the language.
194
I didn't have any money.
195
I didn't know anyone and I really believed in eyebrows.
196
I go all over the world interviewing billionaires to help the younger generation.
197
Can I get a minute with you for the channel real quick?
198
Absolutely.
199
Did you take on a lot of investors?
200
No, I mean, when I sold in 2018, I didn't have, I own 100% of the company.
201
Are you serious?
202
Yeah.
203
How much did you sell for it?
204
The company was evaluated of 3 billion.
205
Nobody believed in eyebrow business.
206
Did you have anybody that doubted you in business?
207
Oh, absolutely.
208
The landlord that I wanted to rent the space, the bank didn't want to give me a credit card everybody my own husband didn't believe
209
that this will be a business why didn't you listen to anybody else you know why
210
because i really believed it i really believed
211
that eyebrow is such an important feature in our face
212
and i fixed my own eyebrow this is how everything started i had pencil thin eyebrows in the 80s
213
that was the fashion as a billionaire what's the best financial advice you would give to the younger generation
214
if you want to start your own business watch the cash flow EBITDA is everything.
215
It's all about the profits.
216
Don't start spending money left and right.
217
When I started, I was driving a beat-up car that I spent $200, okay?
218
And it didn't matter if my daughter thought
219
that I couldn't drive her to school because the kids would make fun of her or my clients.
220
They didn't make fun, but you know, the perception of people like, oh, I have to fit in with everybody else.
221
I didn't care.
222
I had bigger goals and it was important for me to save every penny to put into my business.
223
And for many years, this is what I did.
224
Every money I will generate, I will put back into the business.
225
So you just kept reinvesting?
226
That's it, yes.
227
I didn't buy cars.
228
I worked non-stop, so I didn't have even time to spend the money I was making.
229
Now, when you started to generate cash flow and reinvest in the business, how did you scale?
230
You have to scale to produce more products to widen the distribution
231
and of course you start learning the business slowly you make a lot of mistakes i made many mistakes
232
but you learn from your mistakes
233
and the key is to never make the same mistake twice social media right now
234
because you asked me how i scale my daughter
235
that worked with me
236
and we used to travel to promote the products in 2012 she came to me
237
and said mom maybe we'll get into this app called instagram
238
and we don't need to travel that much
239
and i said okay let's try let's see anybody else like
240
i don't believe it i don't want like absolutely anything i will try anything
241
so we start posting pictures of our products and it went viral
242
and this is how we start sending products to some makeup artists
243
or women and men that love products and our makeup
244
and they used to do tutorial on youtube or pictures for instagram
245
and we're the first beauty brand having a presence on Instagram
246
and this is how we scale it's exploded the company
247
so social media it changed the game for you change completely the game
248
so you always have to be alert don't sit here
249
and do the same business
250
that you did 20 years ago you have to adapt you
251
have to pivot business changes every day right now with AI
252
I'm looking into I want to learn more I want to
253
implement AI as much as I can in finance in product development in distribution everything You've already built a billion dollar company.
254
You've became a billionaire.
255
Are you still motivated to keep on going?
256
Oh, I work like I can pay my rent next month.
257
So you're working like the rents do?
258
Oh, yes.
259
Yes.
260
Like, I love it.
261
I love what I do.
262
I don't even feel like I work.
263
And that's the key, actually.
264
I find that I'm more successful, that I have a purpose every day, me and my daughter.
265
Money are great.
266
Don't get me wrong.
267
I love my whatever I have, what I build.
268
I work hard for it.
269
But that's not everything in life.
270
My family, my clients, my friends.
271
Every day I wake up and I love challenge.
272
I love to solve problems.
273
I'm competitive.
274
So I have a great life.
275
Does money buy happiness?
276
Depends.
277
How you define happiness?
278
It buys freedom.
279
Freedom.
280
That's, yes.
281
I think money buys freedom.
282
Not fulfillment though?
283
No fulfillment, no. Absolutely.
284
If me and you died tomorrow and you had one more guiding principle to lead with the younger generation, what would that be?
285
Oh my God.
286
Don't be afraid to start to do whatever your heart is telling you.
287
Believe in yourself.
288
That's very important.
289
And you don't need to be like somebody else.
290
I know it's a lot of bullying right now on social media, school for younger people.
291
You don't need to be like somebody else.
292
You know, it's okay.
293
I was skinny in school.
294
I was a gymnast.
295
I was the last one.
296
I was never like everybody else in the class.
297
But you know what?
298
I used to go to the library.
299
I used to read, to do my homework, and be passionate about whatever I was doing.
300
And at the end of the day, you take all that and you could build whatever you want.
301
You have amazing advice.
302
Thank you so much.
303
Thank you so much for your time.
304
I appreciate you and wish you good luck.
305
And everybody else that is watching, believe in yourself, because you could do whatever you want.
306
I have to ask you, I connect with all the billionaires I interview.
307
Can I get your contact?
308
Sure.
309
Guys, we just walked up to her.
310
What did she say?
311
I'm not a billionaire.
312
I'm a billionaire.
313
And she's a self-made one too.
314
Guys, she came from a communist country of Romania.
315
Came here to Beverly Hills and built a multi-billion dollar company, you guys.
316
She just gave a fantastic interview.
317
But the time has now come.
318
We're about to leave Beverly Hills and head out to Atlanta, Georgia, to go find the richest woman that lived there
319
and meet up with the youngest self-made female billionaire in the entire world.
320
So head with us right now to the airport to go fly out to Atlanta.
321
All right, you guys, so we just got through security at the Los Angeles airport, and it is time now.
322
It's 11 o'clock at night, and we're about to fly out to Atlanta to go meet up with the youngest self-made female billionaire of all time.
323
And we're gonna figure out how she built her billion-dollar company, and how you watching can do the exact same thing.
324
And since Atlanta's home to more millionaires and billionaires than most cities in the world, we're gonna go see who else we can find in the richest areas in Atlanta.
325
So come with us right now to Atlanta, Georgia.
326
March guys it is 5 a.m and we just landed in Atlanta Georgia
327
and in just a few hours I'm gonna be heading into the richest part of Atlanta
328
and Buckhead Village to go find some of the richest women
329
that live out here and see
330
if we can get their advice on how they built their well
331
so stay tuned let's head in
332
and go see who we can find excuse me ma'am question for you how old were you
333
when you became a millionaire um 33 33 and how did How did you get rich?
334
I run a tech company.
335
You run a tech company?
336
Yes.
337
Have you been a business owner?
338
I left Wall Street in 2013.
339
You were on Wall Street?
340
Yes.
341
My job was to keep rich people rich for a living.
342
I came up with the idea in 2013, but we didn't make our money until 2017 as a business.
343
So what was the most amount of money that you made in a single year?
344
Just shy of $10 million.
345
$10 million?
346
Yeah, just shy as well.
347
I go all over the world interviewing the richest people to help the younger generation.
348
Can I get a minute with you for our channel real quick?
349
Sure.
350
Have you ever met a billionaire?
351
Absolutely.
352
I've been to bank accounts with billionaires and the homes of billionaires.
353
Absolutely.
354
So where do the wealthiest people put their money? their money.
355
I want you to think about the richest people that you've ever met.
356
Where are they investing their money in today's world?
357
That's not talking about a lot.
358
Okay, so here we go.
359
80% of their money typically is in marketable securities.
360
So stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETF, things like that.
361
10% of their wealth is in cash.
362
And then the other 10% is in alternative investments.
363
Those are the investments that you can't turn into cash quickly.
364
So things like real estate, things like private investments that can give you the ability to grow your wealth tremendously over the next five to 10 years.
365
But it's all invested.
366
Wealthy people do not put their money in cash.
367
It's always in something that has a potential to grow their wealth.
368
Do they keep their money in the savings account?
369
No. Wealthy people put their money to work.
370
I think we all have job descriptions.
371
Even me running my business, they give their money a job description.
372
You cannot save or work your way to wealth.
373
You can only invest your way there.
374
Did you come from a lot of money?
375
No, I did not come from a lot of money.
376
I came from a middle-class household, two parents.
377
I was the first person in my family to go to college, first entrepreneur, first millionaire in my family.
378
You went to Howard?
379
I did.
380
I grew up right outside of D.C.
381
Yes, I did.
382
The best HBCU in the world.
383
What was your turning point to financial freedom?
384
I think one of the biggest things I learned about the 1% on Wall Street, they believe they have power.
385
They believe they deserve to be in a room.
386
They believe they're supposed to be wealthy.
387
Most people don't even believe they deserve a seat at the table.
388
Did you ever doubt yourself?
389
Absolutely.
390
I was the only black female on my floor on Wall Street.
391
Sometimes I felt like I wasn't good enough, but in that same moment I knew that I could be a billionaire because I was in that room.
392
Are you gonna be a billionaire?
393
Absolutely.
394
Billion-dollar CEO right here.
395
Absolutely.
396
Your last message to the younger generation.
397
Wealth does not have a color.
398
Therefore it looks like you, it looks like me, and it starts in the mind.
399
Just Just because you didn't grow up with wealth, just because you may not have a lot of money now, doesn't mean you can't effectively build wealth.
400
But the key is ownership.
401
You have to create your wealth by owning companies that you know you use and believe in, or create your own business.
402
You got amazing advice.
403
Thank you.
404
I appreciate that.
405
I have to ask you, I connect with all the millionaires that I interview.
406
Could I get your contact?
407
Absolutely.
408
Guys, she made $10 million in a single year.
409
She started off on Wall Street, left, and built a multi-million dollar tech company, you guys.
410
She just gave a phenomenal interview.
411
My favorite part was when she broke down what the richest people in the world, the billionaires, do with their money.
412
And I just got to say, you guys, you don't find this information in school or any of these online courses, you guys.
413
Only here at the School of Hard Knocks.
414
But as you guys know, we got to keep this one rolling because we got to keep going to find the richest people in Atlanta, you guys.
415
Come on, Arch, you guys.
416
The time has now come.
417
We're going to be heading out to go try and meet and interview the legendary, the youngest self-made female billionaire in the entire world,
418
Sarah Blakely, at an event that's being held about an hour south of Atlanta, Georgia, you guys.
419
We're gonna show up and see if we can actually get to her
420
and interview her for our channel you guys I've interviewed like 25 plus billionaires
421
But she would be one of the craziest ones
422
that I've ever done being that she's one of the only self-made woman billionaires you guys
423
So we're gonna go do our best to try
424
and get this interview for you guys and go get a million dollars worth again All right, you guys, so we just got to our destination We're gonna be walking
425
over right now to go meet up with an interview the
426
legend Sarah Blakely to go figure out how to become a billionaire Come on Hello How are you?
427
Hi!
428
Hi Sarah.
429
How are you?
430
Good, it's great to meet you.
431
Congratulations on this whole movement and you know success that you've had.
432
Thank you so much.
433
Stopping people and asking them cool advice.
434
We appreciate that.
435
Yeah, it's been a lot of fun.
436
We get to meet amazing people like you so it's all worth it for sure.
437
Your story's been super inspiring to just learn about
438
and this is what I've been wanting to do for a couple years now
439
so I'm glad that we get to tell it to our audience as well
440
and you've had an amazing journey so I know that they're looking forward to it.
441
My only request is that no holding back.
442
We're going to give them the secrets right now and what it takes to build a billion dollar brand.
443
Okay.
444
Can we do that?
445
Well, let's do it.
446
Perfect.
447
I got all the secrets.
448
Who am I here with today?
449
Sarah Blakely.
450
And for those that don't know, what was your business?
451
I make butts look better.
452
My business was Spanx.
453
You're the founder of Spanx.
454
I'm the founder of Spanx.
455
What was the most amount of money that you made in a single year?
456
A lot.
457
Give me a range.
458
Hundreds of millions.
459
Hundreds of millions of dollars?
460
Yeah.
461
And did you sell your company?
462
I did.
463
For how much?
464
I sold it for $1.2 billion.
465
You sold your company for $1.2 billion?
466
Yes.
467
Are you a billionaire?
468
That makes me a billionaire, yes.
469
For the ones that don't know, did you have a lot of money when you started your business?
470
No, I had $5,000 that I had saved myself from selling fax machines door to door for seven years.
471
Do you guys know what a fax is?
472
I sold them and I saved my money.
473
Was it easy to get people to invest in your company?
474
It was so easy for me to get investors.
475
You know why?
476
I'm the only investor.
477
You never took on investors?
478
I never had a single investor in Spanx other than me.
479
Are you serious?
480
I'm serious.
481
Self-funded the entire 21 years.
482
Are you serious?
483
I'm serious.
484
So it was really easy to get an investor.
485
I sat down with myself and I was like, do you want to spend your five grand on a vacation or do you want to try to bet on yourself?
486
And you bet on yourself.
487
And I bet on myself.
488
So you don't think people should look to give their company away and give that ownership away to other people?
489
Listen, whatever you give away in your business, you have to be very willing to give up.
490
You give up control.
491
You got to control.
492
You got to make all the shots.
493
Yeah.
494
I mean, I literally had no investors.
495
I got to answer to my own intuition, which I really honored throughout the whole journey.
496
I always pay attention to intuition over data.
497
And I don't think investors really understand that.
498
So that worked in my favor because intuition is not on a spreadsheet.
499
Did you face a lot of rejection?
500
Did I face a lot of rejection?
501
I sold fax machines for seven years door to door.
502
Rejection is my middle name.
503
I actually got rejected so much, people would rip up my business card in my face and they would escort me out of buildings.
504
So by the time I started Spanx, rejection I knew was just part of the formula to success.
505
Totally unfazed by rejection.
506
In fact, the more I would get rejected, I'm like, oh, I'm closer to my yes.
507
What was the craziest thing that you did as a business owner when you were starting out?
508
Oh my God, where do I start?
509
Well, definitely when I landed Neiman Marcus, which was such a prestigious retailer.
510
I got a chance to be in one pocket in the store of the whole hosiery department.
511
You know, Spanx was between like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein
512
and all these huge brands and no one had heard of Spanx.
513
So I took bins that I bought at Office Depot and stuck them at every cash register in the store, which is so not okay.
514
Neiman Marcus has a very strict visual apartment, but everybody thought somebody else approved it.
515
So I was trying to get the product out of the sleepiest corner of the store
516
and move it around to where the customers actually were.
517
So you have to do whatever it takes to really become successful.
518
Absolutely.
519
You do whatever it takes.
520
And I always say, ask for forgiveness, not permission.
521
I love that.
522
Everybody started buying it like crazy.
523
And by the time they figured out no one had approved that I could do that, the CEO of Neiman said, whatever this girl is doing, let her keep doing it.
524
So it's safe to say that nobody's going to run your business like you are, the business owner.
525
Yes.
526
I saw in a video that you did recently
527
that you think people should wait to talk about their idea with other people.
528
But there's other people that maybe argue that and say
529
that you need to talk about your business and run it by as many people as possible to get your thoughts.
530
You disagree with that?
531
I disagree with that.
532
I waited a year before I told any friends or family what I was working on, and that's because I didn't want ego to have to get involved too early.
533
When ego gets involved, you end up spending your time defending it and explaining it instead of pursuing it.
534
So I wanted to invest enough of my personal time in creating this crazy idea that I had.
535
I worked at night and on the weekends on it until I knew I wouldn't turn back when I got doubt.
536
And out of love, your loved ones will bring up things.
537
Like my family was like, Sarah, if it's such a good idea, Why hasn't anybody already done it?
538
You know, even if this is a good idea, the big guys will knock you off in six months and you've spent your life savings on it.
539
Had I heard those things the moment that I had the idea, I would probably still be selling fax machines or something else because faxes aren't really around anymore.
540
But it's very true because ideas are the most vulnerable in the moment you have them.
541
And it's also people's instinct to share the idea in the most vulnerable stage.
542
Because you get an idea and you turn to your coworker, your husband, your wife, and you say, hey, I've got an idea
543
and out of love they'll give you a list of like hey maybe you should consider this
544
and i didn't want that to happen
545
so intuitively i waited a year before i sat my family down
546
and they all thought i was crazy they're like wait what
547
this is the idea you've been working on this new type
548
of undergarment i'm like yes it's gonna change the way women
549
around the world get dressed what did you see differently than your family the people
550
that were calling you crazy the way that i saw
551
that it solved my problem with my clothes so all undergarments prior to that were too thick they They were heavy.
552
They were made with thick material.
553
And you could see the underwear.
554
You could see panty lines.
555
I know you've had this problem.
556
But anyway, you could see panty lines.
557
And I wanted a smooth look.
558
And so I thought of pantyhose only because it's like second skin.
559
The material is so lightweight that if I could create an undergarment out of that material, it would be breathable.
560
It wouldn't feel bulky.
561
It wouldn't feel constricting in the way that other traditional undergarments and girdles had.
562
So it really created this whole new canvas for women.
563
And I want to mention that I went into an industry that was in a double-digit decline.
564
And I find that fascinating.
565
A lot of people like to chase trend and where is everybody moving?
566
And I'm interested in like what industries are sort of dying on the vine and why.
567
And hosiery was dying on the vine because fashion had changed, women's styles had changed, and no one was solving the problem.
568
So when I created Spanx, I created a new type of undergarment
569
that didn't exist with the lightest weight material that was second skin in hosiery to go under women's clothes and bam,
570
it was like lightning in a bottle and I filled a void that women had been waiting for me to fill.
571
