Hi there!

4
and learn some English words and phrases that people use all the time in cafes in Australia.
5
You can speak along with me and use this video for shadowing practice, or just relax and listen along.

11
Okay, let's grab a coffee.
12
It's been getting colder in Melbourne lately.
13
It's almost winter and the temperature has really dropped.
14
Today is overcast and a bit gloomy so we're heading to a cozy cafe.
15
Overcast means that the sky is covered with clouds.
16
It's actually about to rain so we'll spend some time inside before we continue with the rest of our day.
17
This cafe has outdoor seating but because it rained earlier I think sitting inside is a much better idea.
18
On a sunnier day it would be nice to sit out here but probably not today.
19
Let's head inside.
20
There's a huge sign at the front of the cafe.
21
This cafe sells coffee and other drinks like matcha, juice and soda.
22
They also make really tasty sandwiches which is why I wanted to come here this morning.
23
This building also doesn't look like a cafe.
24
In fact, if there wasn't a big sign out the front, you might walk right past it.
25
It's a little hidden away.
26
Hidden away means something is difficult to notice or to find.
27
Walking into the building, there's a stand with the full menu on it.
28
A menu is the list of food and drinks that a cafe or a restaurant sells.
29
The menu is split into categories.
30
Similar items are grouped together.
31
On the left side of the menu there are sandwiches which they call sando's.
32
Sando is an abbreviation for sandwich and usually refers to a Japanese style sandwich made with very soft bread.
33
They They also sell toast made from the same kind of fluffy bread and pastries.
34
Toast is bread that's been heated until it becomes crisp and golden.
35
And pastries are baked, bready treats like croissants and danishes.
36
I'll have a look at those later.
37
On the right side of the menu, they list all of the drinks.
38
We'll grab a table before we decide what to order.
39
In Australia, people say grab all the time.
40
It usually means get or take.
41
I'll grab a seat just means I'll find a seat.
42
Hi, grab a table for two, can we sit anywhere?
43
Thanks.
44
Up the back?
45
Thank you.
46
There aren't many people here yet so we can sit wherever we like.
47
What is the stuff that we'll be trying to do with it?
48
Okay, thank you.
49
This cafe is styled with lots of vintage Australian furniture and handmade knickknacks.
50
There are lots of little decorations and pot plants everywhere.
51
The whole cafe feels very nostalgic.
52
Nostalgic means something that reminds you of the past in a warm or emotional way.
53
There's also a lot of Australiana in the design.
54
Australiana refers to things that feel very Australian, especially older Australian style or culture.
55
It gives the cafe a cosy, old-fashioned Australian feeling.
56
It kind of feels like someone's house.
57
It's pretty common in Australia to order at cafes and casual restaurants using a QR code.
58
You scan the square code with your phone and place your order online.
59
It can be convenient, especially when cafes are busy.
60
Still, it's always useful to know how to order in person too.
61
We're pretty hungry, so I'll head over to order our food first.
62
At the counter, there's a cabinet full of pastries.
63
The counter is the place where you order food and pay.
64
usually food that needs to be cooked is ordered from the menu
65
but pastries cakes biscuits
66
and donuts are often displayed at the counter instead many cafes change their pastries every now
67
and again depending on what the Baker makes
68
so there's often something new to try some people love ordering their usual
69
which is their favorite thing that they order every time they go to a cafe.
70
Other people like to try something different each time they visit.
71
Today we're trying something new.
72
Hi, um my QR code's not working, do you mind if I order here?
73
Thank you.
74
Could I grab two miso mushroom sandwiches please?
75
And that's all for now, I might grab a coffee later if that's the time.
76
Thank you.
77
Yeah we're just sitting on the couch all the way.
78
They're so good.
79
Yeah, I've been here once before.
80
I got the eggplant one.
81
It was so good.
82
We talk about it all the time.
83
Thank you.
84
Oh, actually, I'm going to grab the receipt.
85
Thank you.
86
Before the food arrives, we'll grab some water for the table.
87
There are glasses and bottles of water near the counter that we can take with us back to the table to drink.
88
We'll pour a glass while we wait.
89
The cafe is starting to fill up now.
90
More people are arriving and chatting with their friends.
91
People are mostly here to chill out or catch up with friends, but some are working remotely.
92
Working remotely means working somewhere outside of your normal office, like at home or in a cafe,
93
but most people are just here to grab a coffee with someone.
94
If someone says, I'll grab a coffee, they just mean that they'd like to buy or make one.
95
If someone says to you, let's grab a coffee sometime, they usually mean they want to spend time with you.
96
It doesn't literally mean that they want a coffee, although a cafe is a really nice place to hang out with someone.
97
Our sandwiches have arrived.
98
They look pretty good.
99
They also look pretty big.
100
There's a lot of mushrooms stuffed inside the sandwich.
101
Before I take a bite, I'll grab some napkins.
102
I feel like it's going to spill out when I take a bite.
103
Yep, I was right.
104
The filling is spilling out everywhere.
105
I might need another napkin.
106
Still, it tastes great.
107
The bread is really soft and fluffy, and the mushrooms are crispy and savory.
108
Savory means salty or rich in flavour, not sweet.
109
How good was that?
110
It was so tasty.
111
The mushroom was so crispy.
112
Oh, I'm so full. So good.
113
Oh my god, I want another.
114
The sandwich was really delicious, but was bigger than I expected it to be.
115
I think I need a minute before ordering a drink.
116
Today we're eating in the cafe, but you can also get your coffee or food to take away.
117
takeaway means that the cafe will put your food
118
or drink into a disposable container
119
so you can take it with you you don't need to stay in the cafe to eat
120
or drink it most cafes are also happy to make your coffee in your own clean cup
121
that you bring instead of using a disposable one to help
122
reduce waste all right I'm ready to order our drinks now I'll head back to the counter to order.
123
Near the counter there's a fridge stocked with cold drinks.
124
They also keep alternative milk in there.
125
Alternative milk means milk that doesn't come from a cow.
126
There's no dairy in it.
127
Mostly you can get soy milk or oat milk.
128
Hi, could I order a hot matcha latte with soy milk and one hot black sesame latte with soy milk as well.
129
Both regular sized things?
130
Yeah, both regular sized things.
131
We're just sitting under the sofa things.
132
It might take a few minutes for the barista to make our drinks, so I'll head back to the table and wait.
133
The person who makes your drinks at a cafe is called a barista.
134
A barista usually makes coffee using an espresso machine, machine, but they also make tea and other drinks that the cafe might sell.
135
Baristas work in hospitality.
136
Hospitality means jobs where people serve food or drinks to customers, like cafes, restaurants or bars.
137
It can be pretty fast-paced work because cafes are often really busy, especially in the mornings.
138
Fast-paced means things move quickly and there's a lot happening at once.
139
A lot of people on working holiday visas also work in hospitality while travelling around Australia too.
140
Our drinks have arrived.
141
My matcha latte comes in a blue mug and the black sesame latte comes in a glass.
142
They both look great.
143
Usually I drink one or two coffees a day, and normally I make my coffee at home.
144
Today I felt like having something different.
145
Matcha lattes have become super popular in Australia lately.
146
A lot of people drink them iced, but I wanted a hot beverage on a cold day like today.
147
Matcha has a slightly bitter flavour which I enjoy.
148
Bitter is the opposite of sweet.
149
can taste bitter too, but I like the earthy flavour of matcha and coffee.
150
An earthy flavour is kind of like a savoury flavour.
151
The sesame latte is much sweeter and creamier.
152
My partner usually likes sweeter drinks and adds sugar to his coffee, so he prefers that one.
153
Well, we've had a lovely time hanging out at the cafe this morning, but now it's time to head off.
154
When you go to a cafe, do you usually order the same thing every time?
155
Or do you prefer trying something new from the menu?
156
Thanks for joining me today at this cafe in Melbourne.
