The life of Prince Artic is a tragedy.

I never thought of him as a villain, only someone who made the wrong choices in life.

I think most people who paint Artic as a villain have never read Winglet No. 4, Runaway, which effectively is an extended prologue to Darkstalker Legends,

taking place right after Artic had given the magic ring to Foleslayer.

To quickly summarize, Arctic was under a lot of pressure to choose an animus spell to give to the tribe

and was under an arranged marriage with Snowflake.

Needless to say, his mother

Queen Diamond put a lot of pressure on him and didn't give him many freedoms.

But then he met Foslayer.

Everything in his world suddenly felt right.

He couldn't stop thinking about her, and then he made the decision to run away with her.

He had this perfect vision in his head that they'd run away to some remote island.

But then everything went wrong.

Arctic was all too willing and eager to leave his mother, but Foslayer was not willing to leave hers.

She proposed they instead live in the Night Kingdom, to which Arctic reluctantly agrees to.

At least he'd still be with Foslayer.

But during their escape, Arctic accidentally makes a horrible mistake with a poorly worded animus spell.

Spears!

Stop those guards!

The Spears did just that and plunged into the hearts of six ice wing guards, killing them all.

Arctic would never be the same again.

He was too rash, too eager to escape his mother.

His perfect vision of a future with foe slayer was shattered.

He was blinded by love and to not consider the imperfections of it.

Now, what I'm about to say is a little bit of speculation, but I think Foslayer is the one who pushed

Arctic to have children with her.

And my suspicion comes from the last line of Runaway.

I'm going to hang on to his soul, and I'm going to make him happy.

We are going to be happy.

Maybe this isn't exactly the fate either of us expected, but it's ours now, me and Arctic, together against the world, forever.

I suspect that Foslayer thought that having children with Arctic would help him heal, to forget about his ugly past,

but I think it made it worse.

Darkstalker and Whiteout looked more Nightwing than Icewing.

They only served to remind him of the imperfections of their love.

He missed his ice wing home, did not feel welcome in the night kingdom, and felt cheated at life.

The only bit of goodness he had was reserved for Foslayer and not their children.

He still loved Foslayer.

She was the only thing keeping him from going insane.

Once Foslayer was captured by his mother queen, Diamond,

he snapped he had an evil plan to trade his daughter Whiteout into sexual slavery and return for his wife, Foslayer.

While Whiteout wasn't an animus dragon, she had animus genes, so one of her future dragonettes would be an animus dragon, eventually.

He thought that

Diamond might agree to this plan, to return animus magic back to the Icewinds through Whiteout,

in exchange for Foslayer and Artic to live together in peace, but he forgot one thing,

his son Darkstalker, and he was not going to allow him to take White out.

Artic would lose all free will under Darkstalker's animus magic, but was granted the ability to say one last thing.

I do wish I had been a better father.

If I were, I would have strangled you the moment you hatched.

I think it's fair to say that Artic lost his soul in that very moment.

He'd lost his wife, was willing to trade his daughter, and wished for the death of his son.

Everything in his life went wrong, but he could have stopped it.

He could have tried to love his children, to let go of his past,

and to love his wife for who she was and not what she could have been.
