1
We have obviously been leading worship since we were little.
2
When did you start leading worship?
3
I was 10 in our little kids' room.
4
Yeah, it's really similar.
5
I think I was 10 or 12.
6
And just our whole lives, we've led worship in home groups and just about every space you could get.
7
You want to know my first worship list?
8
I do.
9
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.
10
Yep.
11
because I knew everyone would sing it.
12
Yeah.
13
But my mom's like, that's a song about beer.
14
So, and then my other one was B-I-N-G-O because I knew all the kids would sing it.
15
And she's like, what about like, Jesus loves me?
16
Or I love you, Lord, or something.
17
My first solo was when I was five.
18
And I sing the Arky Arky.
19
The Lord said to Noah, there's gonna be a floody, floody Lord.
20
It was fire.
21
Lots of people got saved.
22
They're like, wow, she's gonna go places.
23
This one.
24
A women's aglow meeting.
25
Women's aglow.
26
I remember that.
27
Yeah.
28
So we have both just loved leading worship our whole lives
29
and will probably tell the day we die until someone peels us off of a stage and goes, I think you're done now.
30
So, but I'm going to be raptured and just Enoch and go home.
31
So I'm not going to even die.
32
Yeah, we'll go together.
33
I told Brian, him and I are going to go like the notebook, just gone the same.
34
But we're talking about worship leading.
35
I know.
36
So don't watch that movie.
37
There's a bad scene.
38
Fast forward it.
39
let's start from practical
40
so you are getting ready to lead worship what do you
41
do what what's your practice of of starting out like the day of yeah like
42
because I feel like gearing up for a worship set you
43
know there's like days of it I feel like just of like coming for Sunday night you know we're preparing
44
that for that a few weeks out of just starting to intercede into Lord What do you want to do?
45
What should we be focused on that night?
46
What's your heart for the people in the room that night?
47
So that's like practical leading up to an event.
48
Cody and I also will just sit and work on set lists a few weeks out, and then we have to usually revisit it a few times.
49
And then honestly, the morning of on Sunday, I woke up and spent time with the Lord, and I changed two songs that I was going to do.
50
So, you know, nothing's ever set in stone.
51
But, like, practically, I think just before, you know, day of, repenting of sin.
52
Right.
53
Honestly, just, Lord, is there anything that's grieved your spirit that I am aware of or I'm not aware of?
54
And just really making sure I'm coming with clean hands
55
and a pure heart and doing that as much as I know how.
56
And then seeking the Lord for that night.
57
Like, what's your heart?
58
What do you want to do?
59
and also just how do you how do i minister to the lord i'm really really wanting to search
60
that out right now like what does
61
that really mean to minister to the lord and i want to do
62
that so yeah that's a few things you know it is a an interesting posture as a worship leader
63
because you know your normal everyday mundane life with god is just you
64
and god or what he's saying to do you know communicate to other people
65
or whatnot but but leading is such a pastoral position
66
so I've seen worship leaders who just stand on the stage and just minister to the Lord.
67
And the whole thing is they're right here, but they forget to bring the people with them.
68
And so I don't know what it is like for you, but for me, it definitely is kind of a back and forth with just me and him.
69
And then bringing, how are we doing?
70
What are you doing?
71
And it's a back and forth instead of a, and then the opposite.
72
I've seen people that are just always connected to the room and eyes are always open.
73
And you're like, he's here too.
74
So, you know, it's an interesting dance, but I think that there's beauty in both.
75
Practically for me, I do a vocal warm-up that is a 10-minute vocal warm-up.
76
She does, every time.
77
It makes everyone on my team crazy.
78
They can all do the vocal warm-up with me.
79
But some of our friends don't warm-up at all.
80
Brooke doesn't warm-up.
81
So really, I think it's probably dependent on learning your voice.
82
I've worked with a vocal coach multiple times.
83
and I do just a 10-minute simple vocal warm-up.
84
On a practical side, if we have a Sunday set, we have a group text
85
that starts on Thursday for our Sunday set where we are usually working with a leader and then also a co-leader.
86
And just what songs are you feeling?
87
What themes are you feeling?
88
And then, you know, what she said, we kind of just shake it down.
89
And then once we're in the set, we really leave it flexible.
90
If there is a song or a moment that we feel we're supposed to do, I don't know what it is for you guys,
91
but in the moment, you have a couple options for
92
if the band isn't rehearsed on the song that you've prepared in the set.
93
A great idea, unless someone can play by ear like a boss, is to just bring it down and just actually do the song a cappella.
94
oftentimes if the band tries to catch up live it can be real wild
95
and pretty distracting and so I highly recommend oftentimes you'll watch our guys
96
if we go into a song spontaneously our MD will communicate the chords to the rest of the guys
97
and they'll come in when they're in unison
98
and are on the same page with what chords to play
99
but usually safer to err on the side of just do it acapella until everybody has their act together
100
and if they can't get it together than just let it be acapella.
101
Do you have any thoughts on this?
102
No, that happened literally last night, because no one knew I was going to go into nothing else.
103
And Jaylee's like, three, one, or whatever the numbers are.
104
And I was like, oh, yeah, I probably should have told them I might do that.
105
I actually went over there to tell him.
106
And then Paul was like, Carrie's going to do first love.
107
And I was like, ah.
108
And I just had to walk back across the stage.
109
Because I was about to tell him, I think I want to do nothing else instead of first love.
110
But then Paul said I was going to do first love like
111
so then i'm to myself i'm like well i'll just go into nothing else
112
but i didn't tell anyone else so and it was
113
so beautiful it's fine it was all in my mind it
114
was you know i usually have a microphone i can tell
115
the band like a talkback i love talkbacks um just for those moments you know
116
but they they're
117
so good though they can just they can do it yeah
118
that's a lot of years yeah um i I don't have a talk back because it would not go well for me.
119
I would say very wild things.
120
And so I don't trust myself.
121
I have been known to put my taco order in.
122
Like, hey, can you guys text Ashley and tell her I want two tacos after this is over?
123
People are like, yes, Lord, what?
124
Tacos?
125
Well, like I forgot to put my food order in and everyone else did.
126
I'm like, oh, yeah, I forgot to tell her what I wanted.
127
The inside track.
128
Okay, so worship leading wise, when you're building your set, talk me through that.
129
Like, do you have kind of a roadmap of where you start, where you end?
130
What are your thoughts or any kind of practicals around set list?
131
That's a good question.
132
Thankfully, I'm married to my MD, so.
133
Very wise.
134
It's nice.
135
It's a little spoiling because he does the details and I just stick with what I'm feeling.
136
I think we're similar with that.
137
It's like if I'm feeling a song, that's all I know.
138
And then Cody works out the other stuff.
139
Keys for me, I'm always like, what key?
140
And that's my biggest thing is what key will I be in?
141
Can I get to these other things I'm feeling?
142
And I usually will have Cody put, if we're going to be in the key of B, what are the B songs I can flow into in case I'm not ready to move on?
143
just because I don't play anything that's helpful for me
144
because I can't just like make everyone else be quiet
145
and I can just be alone yeah
146
so I have to have like those tools
147
but my I'm more like theme focused what am I feeling in my spirit what song will
148
that be and then what other like
149
back pocket songs can I have ready yeah that's helpful for me okay so talk me through
150
hand signals or communication especially
151
because you don't play what my bridge it's like spider-man spider-man
152
oh a little spidey bridge okay i don't know why it
153
was from christ for the nations a long time ago like the worship leader there did bridge um
154
and so it just stuck so i like it i don't know it's very confusing
155
because chorus is with a thumb out and bridge is no thumb
156
but it often gets very crazy
157
when we're like you know whirling around they're like i don't know what the gang sign you're throwing right now
158
but brian like lifts his leg we got the bands are truly incredible
159
because they have they learn the worship leaders every cody like
160
lifts the bridge of his guitar yeah who knows what it
161
all is minor chorus this is the top i just start patting my head
162
and yeah bridge that's my favorite one i just thought you were like throwing like rock
163
and roll signs i was like yeah oh i have one other one that's helpful
164
if i'm in a moment
165
that i don't want the band to build you know sometimes they start building
166
so much we're already we're gonna go through the rafters
167
and there's nowhere else to go um
168
or i just i really love to help uh sometimes just build a tension in the room
169
and just keep singing um you know a phrase over
170
and over and over almost too long like awkward
171
because I think sometimes our congregations
172
or the room gets um kind of familiar with where they think we're gonna go and they disengage
173
and and so sometimes I just awkwardly want to like just just shake it up and like just
174
harp on something until we like act like oh she really wants me to sing
175
that like um after 10 minutes but no I'll I'll after
176
or I'll do this with the band and it just means stir the pot
177
and stay right where you are don't build it yet
178
and then sometimes I'm like let's go and
179
so it's like yeah just helps you have some kind of way to communicate the dynamics of what you're feeling.
180
Yeah.
181
Oftentimes, there are kind of two concepts.
182
Worship leader-led band or band-led worship leader, where they're calling the shots versus you're calling the shots.
183
And neither one are bad, but I think what we've found to really be a dream is a go back and forth of communication.
184
and so our MD will even ask us like you know um uh bridge
185
or you know
186
but he's oftentimes waiting for us to do it we don't
187
we don't do a lot of set arrangements we do do
188
some sometimes like I'm gonna do this song just probably just like this um
189
but we definitely like to practice the song
190
and then once we get into the moment not program tracks
191
and make things so complicated that we can't flow
192
or do a bridge a second time
193
so you don't want you never want tracks to limit you to what you're supposed to do in the room
194
or anything you're doing creatively behind the scenes never let
195
that limit what the holy spirit wants to do and
196
if you can't be good enough as a team to get your
197
so locked and loaded don't over complicate it you'll just distract it's not about perfection
198
but but it really is important that you um that it's smooth
199
and you always prefer the fluidity of of where the Holy
200
Spirit wants to go over being locked into an arrangement or XYZ.
201
Okay, so for you, a set list has been prepared.
202
The only other thing I would add is I drink regular water, and I also drink coconut water, massively organic.
203
Coconut water with no sugar is really great at hydrating.
204
It's actually even a little bit better for you than just water. Or tea.
205
I love that even more than hot tea.
206
some teas will dry my voice out
207
certain spring water dries my voice out so I have to be careful with that too but that's always amazing
208
do you like practical stuff? are you guys like, please move on you guys probably have some amazing things too
209
just whatever works for you your voice is different than your
210
neighbor's voice some people can eat right before they sing I can't,
211
I burp so it's like four hours I don't want to be like,
212
you know, singing through a weird it's a great practical i usually don't eat like two
213
or three hours before which is not great for the waistline to eat these late night meals
214
but here we are you know then you're
215
so hungry at the end of the night yeah i usually
216
try to eat right after worship i'm usually sitting right in the front row during the sermon eating
217
so you'll find me there it's wise great practical um
218
so set list vocal prep band direction um again back to
219
the the signaling the team with hand signals just it's probably really simple to to just define what
220
that is for you and your team we do this for the top
221
or reverse um chorus bridge um
222
and we're making sure you often see me i'll i'll look around to the whole team to make sure
223
that they they know oftentimes where we're going um because
224
if in worship sometimes they can't see you and your hand signal
225
so oftentimes if i'm going to make a change especially an unexpected change.
226
I will look at every single team member to make sure that they know where we're going.
227
So as much communication as you can have back and forth with the band, where again that they're not leading you.
228
I think the goal ultimately is that the worship leader leads.
229
But sometimes, I don't know about you, but I've gotten into a spot where I don't know how to end a song.
230
You know how like those songs at the end they just keep going like this needs to end somehow
231
but i don't know how to get out of this um i'll just look at at my md like wide-eyed
232
and he'll be like right right and bring it down you know
233
so because you can't be on the mic
234
and bring it down you know and distract everyone
235
so i'll give him really weird eyes um we had an
236
md one time it was before they had like the extra
237
cool ways of doing the he had to have two mics
238
So he yelled for the band in the wrong mic because he also sang with me.
239
And so he's like, we're going to the bridge!
240
And the whole room was like, oh, bridge, bridge, okay.
241
It was awesome.
242
We had a terribly perfect moment one time.
243
Chris Kealala was our drummer, and he started playing with us when he was 13 years old.
244
Chris started playing drums and he is the original OG with us.
245
We were in this together and he was on the drums and there are two songs called Let Everything That Has Breath.
246
And one song is let everything that has breath.
247
It's like this really fast dancey praise song.
248
And one is this like super emo like let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
249
And so the set was like so, so beautiful and powerful
250
and it gets kind of down to the end of the set, and it's like this just super emo, broody, beautiful moment.
251
And Brian turns around to Chris and goes, let everything that has breath.
252
And Chris was like, all right.
253
And the fast one has this crazy, ba-da-ba-ba-ba-ba, like crazy.
254
And Brian just took his guitar and turned around and went, wrong song, so sorry, wrong song.
255
Just apologize.
256
We have done so much.
257
Oh my gosh, we should tell more fun stories.
258
This will be good.
259
We, this one time right over here, back in the day, for whatever ungodly reason, we stapled our set list together.
260
Never do that.
261
Yeah, girl.
262
And so, of course, like you rip apart the set list because staples are stupid in a set list.
263
You have to flip, you know, anyway.
264
So I, you know, the staple goes.
265
Wait, how many songs did you have if you had to have a stapler?
266
Girl, this is Bevel.
267
Hello.
268
We're ready for anything, you know?
269
Back in the day, it's actually Brian hurt his shoulder.
270
His whole entire shoulder kind of like dislocates.
271
It's really gross.
272
But we would do like a one or two hour worship set, and they would bring us back up, and we'd do two hours, sometimes three hours of ministry.
273
We don't do that anymore because that's stupid. But we learned.
274
So, yeah, we had to be ready for anything.
275
But I ripped the set list, the staple, went God knows where,
276
and I found that staple in worship as I'm stomping around on the stage and it went right into my heel
277
and blood is dripping from my stage, from my heel and I'm like, and it's Bethel so people are like, yes Lord, more Lord.
278
And I was like, no. So people often ask,
279
they're like, are you barefoot because it's holy ground?
280
And I'd love to say that, but actually it's just, I get really sweaty and shoes are uncomfortable.
281
And this is just better and easier.
282
So, but yeah, we don't do staples anymore here.
283
There will be blood.
284
There was blood.
285
There's power in the blood.
286
This is a funny story.
287
Yes, tell me.
288
When I first started like traveling a little bit more out of the church where I was, early 20s, we didn't have like any money.
289
We always did like a van, but for some reason this one time somebody was letting us use their tour bus.
290
And so we were like, yeah, that's so cool.
291
So we borrowed this tour bus, and it was super duper old.
292
And it was, I don't even remember, probably 1967 bus.
293
Well, the bus driver didn't empty the toilet.
294
And we were going to an event that was outside in a parking lot.
295
that was a little bit of a hill.
296
Like, and this, like, the people were down lower than where we were,
297
and the bus was at the top of the hill.
298
And for whatever reason, the bus, like, relieved itself.
299
Talk about a fragrance.
300
It was the most disgusting event I've ever been to.
301
And it was the most foul-smelling experience in worship.
302
It was like two hours.
303
It was hot.
304
It was in Texas.
305
So, yeah, it was great.
306
I don't know why I shared that one, but it's like one of my funniest memories because I just like, I felt so bad for the people.
307
Trying to worship and hold our nose.
308
Oh, my gosh.
309
Yeah, we've done, we've just had about every wild thing you can happen.
310
We, it's an entire session waiting to happen to talk about the crazy of here.
311
But, okay, let's talk about some more practical things.
312
Let's talk about spontaneous, you know, even just to break down those words.
313
What's spontaneous versus prophetic?
314
You know, at the end of the day, it's a spontaneous moment that you're always listening for what God's saying.
315
You know, and obviously we're hearing that for the songs and which songs we're singing.
316
And I want to encourage you at the top to know that not every set needs a spontaneous moment.
317
I just want to free you up with that, that you don't need one in every single set.
318
If it's the Lord, great.
319
If it's beautiful, but you can have a powerful 10-minute set that does not have a spontaneous moment.
320
So never feel like you need to force it.
321
Another thing that I would recommend is, you know, I don't know what your situation is, but we almost always co-lead where there's two, three, four, sometimes five of us up here.
322
I love it.
323
It's my favorite.
324
But we definitely have an awkward kind of a dance sometimes with, like, are you singing a song or me?
325
Or we're not all five singing something because there's only so many minutes in the set.
326
But we kind of establish there's main leader and then there's co-leader and then there's BGV usually.
327
Most of the time the BGV is probably not going to sing a spontaneous song in this set just
328
because they're going to leave it to the main or the co-lead.
329
But we are always watching them and we are also watching the band
330
because oftentimes the moment the Lord wants to do is not even vocal it's through an instrument
331
and so we're just always listening to kind of what's happening in the band
332
and keeping an eye on each other
333
but we have something we call follow the point
334
or honor the point it's a hunting reference but
335
if somebody on the team leans into a moment
336
or a theme instead of checking out
337
or stepping back we we want to echo
338
or harmonize what they're doing the word harmony actually means to partner with an echo
339
so um be mindful in those moments
340
if someone steps into a prophetic moment um
341
and even in a spontaneous moment you know you you want to oftentimes have a hook come from
342
that jim saying like something that the crowd can sing
343
so it's not just you singing for 15 minutes um
344
that can be the lord sometimes but it's few and far between
345
but we always be listening for like what's the thing
346
that they can also sing with you back what's the phrase
347
so when you
348
when you get a strong theme from the lord um to
349
circle the back do you have any thoughts on spontaneous singing yeah
350
because you can always a lot of times too to circle
351
back to whatever song you've come out of to get the
352
room singing again is helpful as well right you know circling back to
353
that yeah no i love that i think i think if you do spontaneous at the end of every single song, I think it can lose its potency.
354
And the people maybe don't even want to lean in on that as much anymore.
355
So we try to be real strategic on, Lord, what would be the best spot of the night to just flow?
356
And then, of course, if you feel something in the Holy Spirit, you always follow that.
357
And space is really beautiful, too.
358
Just letting people not have to be sung to, but just like allowing space.
359
Just being sensitive to that.
360
It's not as awkward in the room as you think it is.
361
It's like really sweet for people to just stand in the presence of the Lord and just kind of quiet,
362
like create those moments too that are just, yeah.
363
Yeah, beautiful um the the other spontaneous thing
364
that we try to just be mindful of is to keep
365
a pulse on the timing of it you know oftentimes as worship leaders
366
when you're up here you can get lost in a moment
367
which obviously is the goal for us to just be you
368
know really in in a lost moment with the lord
369
but you do need to remember again you're checking in with the clock you're checking you're you're still on earth
370
so you have one foot in heaven and one foot in earth
371
and you've watched worship leaders that they lift off and they're gone
372
and you're like nice knowing you see you goodbye now goodbye
373
you know like we stop these moments I won't mention names
374
but I'd have to like pull her down from heaven be like okay
375
but you're here now too so be here um
376
so just being mindful of that that
377
that you are you know you're pastoring you're shepherding
378
and you're bringing them along with you um and uh I think
379
that in a in spontaneous moment
380
or in a song be really mindful of how many times you say the same phrase
381
because it can be really um it can be powerful in some moments
382
if you feel like it's the lord lean into it like carrie was saying like
383
if you're like no i need to i do need to keep singing this
384
but if you're not if you don't know for sure
385
that you should keep singing the same chorus
386
if you don't know for sure
387
that you should keep singing the same line in a spontaneous maybe wait like carrie's saying
388
and maybe even pause for a second let it have a moment
389
and then you can always come back to it instead of
390
having to just keep saying the same thing 75 times it can get really old
391
so even just giving a little bit of a breath so
392
that you could pick it back up
393
when i was talking about themes earlier coming into a night
394
or a set list with just whatever the theme is from the holy spirit usually
395
that theme is what kind of happens in those prophetic spontaneous
396
moments it's it's kind of what is released in the room if that makes sense So it's me leaning in,
397
okay, like, for instance, like the blood.
398
If it's like the Lord's like, I really want, I want my, like, I want you to focus on my blood, the power of my blood.
399
Then before that set, I will really just go and read scripture
400
and just remind my own spirit of the power of the blood.
401
So I'm singing scripture more than I'm singing my own interpretation of his blood.
402
Does that make sense?
403
and honestly what's in you is going to come out of you
404
so the depth of our history with the lord the more easily it's going to just flow
405
when it's time sometimes i go into stuff
406
that i'm like whoa i did not see it going
407
that direction but it's just it's just hearing the holy spirit history with the Lord.
408
Yeah, if that makes sense.
409
Something in worship that has really helped us and built the worship culture
410
that we have here is just some really simple verbal guidance
411
like the Bible says sing a new song to the Lord you know
412
and I think it says it like at least nine times
413
in the Bible sing a new song to the Lord oftentimes especially in cultures
414
that wouldn't be like something here that's you know developed
415
and mature and years and years of worship teaching
416
and leading maybe you're a place that's like newer to this
417
or hungry for this or scared of this
418
and your pastor might just want you to sing a couple safe songs
419
and be done like the presence of god can show up there you're good but you also have to build trust
420
with the leader and but oftentimes a great helpful pastoral tip is to say something scriptural
421
the bible says sing a new song to the lord let's
422
the bible says lift your hands let's lift our hands
423
so just some simple you're not trying to pass room
424
or teach them and i don't really even love talking a lot in worship if i'm
425
if i'm talking about my preference um although i've had some powerful moments with it i don't recommend it
426
but often just say let's lift our hands together just
427
that simple coaching often even gives permission for a room
428
that would maybe feel differently of some people would probably be fine with it
429
and some people be like are we okay with that here
430
and just giving that simple let's the bible says just lift our hands just lift your hands
431
And you'll just watch a room really release.
432
So just be being mindful of that.
433
The next thing I want to talk about is authority.
434
And I love this about you because some people just sing a song
435
and some people mean every word of the song they sing.
436
And I love that about you is you only sing songs that you believe every word and it really translates.
437
And so talk to me about that.
438
How do you feel like you've gained authority in worship?
439
You have such a purity and a sweetness, but you have such a confidence in your walk with God
440
that truly translates in your real life that when you get up here, it's just an overflow.
441
Oh, man.
442
Thank you.
443
Yeah, it's true.
444
I mean, I'm just, I feel like I'm living it.
445
I mean, you know, like I'm a worshiper, And I find that when I'm going through stuff in my own life,
446
which we all are, I'm in the word and I'm in worship to get me through it.
447
I'm not numbing out on Netflix.
448
I'm not, I'm just, I'm careful with stewarding the season and letting the Lord meet me in that place.
449
Because I've just watched him do it time and time again.
450
of it being intentional that, you know, he's in control.
451
So I'm like, what are you wanting to do in my life through this?
452
Um, and so I think when I get up to lead, it's, it's just like, I've been in that song.
453
I usually lead the songs that I'm living out.
454
It's like what I want to lead.
455
Uh, if someone asks me to lead a different song, I'm like, I need to sit with
456
that for a minute to make sure it comes out of my bones
457
and and I'm not just like I don't know just fulfilling a task you know what I mean
458
and I've had to do that I remember being in um you know there's different seasons
459
that we're going to be in
460
so some of us in this room a lot of you
461
are probably in season a season where you're serving what your
462
pastor is asking you to do on weekends a lot of times
463
and I've been in that season and the Lord blesses
464
and honors that so I think if there's you know songs
465
that you don't connect with ask the holy spirit to help you start connecting with
466
that pray that song sit in scripture with
467
that song with the truth of the word of god in
468
that song and but yeah i'm just
469
so desperate for his presence i'm like i told i told hannah yesterday they asked me to jump up
470
and sing even though i walk with her
471
and i was like i said this song is really special to me
472
because this last year we went through some really tough things
473
and um i was in a season where i just started running
474
because it was like my i felt really overwhelmed with a lot of things i
475
if i felt like if i turned on worship music in my ears
476
and just started sprinting i just felt better
477
and i would i would sprint even though i walk
478
and i was like my neighbors were probably like man who
479
is she fighting like we both know who had said fight
480
because i would like sing it and like run
481
and just declare i live out in the country
482
so they may not have heard me but
483
if they did they're like wow she's like angry
484
but i mean yeah i'm just sitting you're probably the same like i'm sitting with these i'm a diehard worshiper
485
and um it's it's in my bones i wanted to say
486
something about bones can i just go there for one second
487
when jen asked if i would jump up with her in this
488
i um i've been in second kings
489
and i was super moved the other day in second kings 13 21 it talks about
490
when elisha dies and they bury him and then the scripture right after
491
that talks about this man that had died
492
and they were taking him out to bury him
493
and these this group of raiders were headed toward them
494
and uh such the bible is so funny
495
because it's like random information all of a sudden it's like every spring the moabite raiders would come
496
and the people were afraid and it's like i want to know more about what
497
that means but anyway it's like elisha died lisa harper i should yes actually i will elisha died
498
and was buried and then it's like and it was springtime
499
and the moabite raiders were you know and
500
so they have this dead man and they get scared and
501
so they throw him into Elisha's tomb and they run for their lives.
502
And it says, you probably know this, but it says the dead man hit Elisha's bones and came back to life.
503
And I was, I've just been so moved.
504
I'm like, Lord, what's in my bones and is what is in my bones?
505
Will it affect other people and bring them back to life?
506
And so I'm just so, I want to make sure what I'm putting into my spirit is bringing health to my bones.
507
You know, because even David said when he was not confessing his sin before the Lord that his bones were wasting away.
508
And so it's just so important.
509
I think if you're not experiencing, let me put it this way.
510
Let the Lord heal your bones so that when you're leading, there's just authority because what's going on in your personal life is breakthrough.
511
And then he'll handle the room.
512
Just have this walk with the Lord where you're letting him do the things and work out the things, meet you in the pain and meet you in the trauma, meet you in the disappointment,
513
the hard conversations, the submitting to your pastor, the leading of your team, the stuff in your family with your husband, with your children, with all of it.
514
Let the Lord meet you there.
515
Get your heart before the Lord where you need it to be.
516
And then when you step up to lead, it's going to come from an overflow of relationship.
517
and it's going to bring life to other people because it's you're having life in your own bones so yeah
518
absolutely yes spider-man power face
519
crush um you know the the thing about i think singing spontaneously is is right along with that
520
same theme of people like how do you how do you
521
grow in it practically how do you grow in singing spontaneously
522
i think the cutest example ever is we tell our team to practice singing
523
other lyrics to a song you know really well like here
524
i am to worship you know we're all at worship school you know it's
525
so silly to do it but
526
if you can actually get your brain to get out of the way
527
so that you can you are so you can sing anything to anything
528
and it could happen so practically so practically just even on an instrumental
529
or or just play chords of a song that you know
530
so well and just practice singing um whatever you feel like the lord is leading you to sing
531
and and learn melody and learn harmony
532
and even with singing harmony um don't lock in necessarily to one harmony like be flexible
533
and movable to what note the lord wants you to sing And that comes with a lot of wrong notes.
534
But man, if you can err on the side of Lord, I want you to speak to me
535
and I want to hear what you're doing so much that I follow you even at the risk of me looking stupid.
536
I'll follow you.
537
I'll flow with you.
538
Wait till you hear Susie's session.
539
I think it's tomorrow.
540
You're not ready.
541
She just taught me to flow like nobody.
542
The freedom that she walks in is bonkers.
543
but with spontaneity god wants like carrie said everything that you do
544
and say to be an overflow from your life and so
545
if you want to practice you know all the practical things of singing a song that's great
546
but to practice being spontaneous
547
and to hear what the lord is saying that's what it
548
is at the end of the day is you want to get good at hearing god's voice
549
and so ask god say god speak to me
550
and i'll do whatever you say lord speak to me
551
and give me the courage to to do that in my normal life.
552
When singing spontaneously really came alive for me, it was after a season where God had taught me in everyday mundane stuff to listen to his voice of,
553
tell this person that, or go do this.
554
And I would just say, Lord, just tell me what you're saying and give me the courage to obey it.
555
So practice in your normal everyday life, both singing and also hearing the voice of God so that when you get up here,
556
you're not practicing doing anything necessarily.
557
You're doing it out of an overflow from your life.
558
And we also tell our teams, we want you to focus on being courageous and following God way more than we want you to focus on messing up.
559
So if you can step over that line of the fear of man that you have practiced, you put in the hours,
560
you're living the life, and then you get up here and it's just an overflow filled with the courage of God.
561
Man, powerful, powerful things can happen.
562
um okay let's talk about um actually
563
when we're singing the songs uh there's a written melody
564
and harmony and chorus and all this the song is if we're gonna say just say um say we're gonna sing
565
i don't know what first love which we sang yesterday twice
566
which i loved um makes me cry
567
when you're singing a song that's already established talk to me about like your process in it, like how you change it or make it your own,
568
or if you've written it versus someone else's song that you're singing.
569
Do you have any thoughts about that?
570
Like for example, she said, I don't think I understand.
571
It's the three o'clock lol.
572
Yeah, yeah.
573
Okay, so I'll say a thought then, and then we'll see if something sparks for you.
574
Something for me that I want to encourage you to avoid doing is changing the melody of a song you didn't write.
575
This has sometimes been popular in recent days, and I just would put back to you,
576
would you want someone to change your song?
577
And also, it's illegal, so two for one.
578
There is definitely creative flow when you're doing someone else's song, when you're leading someone else's song.
579
I would highly recommend you, as a worship leader, to sing the melody of the song in a congregation.
580
What we're doing up here this week with you is very
581
different than what we would do in a local Sunday congregation because we're all on the same page.
582
We have been trained.
583
We went from eating baby food in the spirit and worship to now we're ready for steak.
584
But the congregations you're leading in worship are some people are coming and they don't know Jesus.
585
You have children in the room.
586
You've got all walks of life.
587
So you're leading worship to a very diverse crowd of where they're at and you need to meet them there.
588
So some people that are coming there, the song that you're so tired of
589
and you want to change it up live to make it cool and fun and feel fresh, half the room don't even know your song.
590
So you've got to remember who's in your room and who you're leading for.
591
If you're leading for a home group and they all know the song, great, that's very different.
592
But being mindful of who you're leading and how you're leading them is really important.
593
And so, do you have any thoughts on that?
594
No, that's very good.
595
She said, say la, okay.
596
Say la, say less.
597
Okay, Annie, is there anything standing out for you before we let Q&A happen?
598
No, let's do Q&A.
599
Okay, if you have a question, where's Steph?
600
Steph's gonna grab the mic.
601
If you have a question, you can actually come right over here and line up.
602
Heather, will you give everybody a wave?
603
This is my best friend, Heather, everybody.
604
Nobody like her in the world.
605
And I like her shirt.
606
I think you should just talk about worship hat on, worship hat off.
607
Just mention that one.
608
Okay.
609
So Bill Johnson, who's very wonderful, has corrected me in my life more times than I can count.
610
And I'm very thankful for it because I'd be weirder than I am.
611
and one of those times we were driving to a conference
612
in Nashville it was probably in like it was probably 23 years ago now
613
and we were driving to conference and I was a new mom
614
and I'd had a long day and I was exhausted
615
and I was grumbling kind of preparing my heart for worship
616
and I was like mommy hat off worship hat on you know just being stupid
617
and Bill leaned toward me And he just said, well, the problem is, is the worship hat should have never come off.
618
Shot to the heart.
619
So it changed my life, and it really gave me a different perspective on this is not worship.
620
This is part of it, but your whole life is worship.
621
The hidden times that only God sees you changing your baby's diaper, going to work, serving, everything
622
that you do in all your life is worship unto him not just um these moments
623
that we have here by by any means
624
so thank you bestie go ahead steph all right this is
625
going to be a quick packed powerful q a rapid fire
626
questions hi thank you a good segue from what you were
627
just talking about for raising your kids in worship do you
628
have any specific tools i just had a baby like six weeks ago.
629
So like raising up your kids into worship.
630
She said you have more kids.
631
You're doing a bad job.
632
I think that for me, we try to get them in the room when worship's happening, getting them into the presence of God.
633
Growing up, you know, they listen to worship music when they're going to sleep at night.
634
And oftentimes we have worship in the house.
635
But we are in this house actually a lot.
636
And so it is not convenient when you have kids to get them in the room.
637
It is a lot.
638
We tell our team, man, anything you can do, we'll help you with your babies.
639
Just get your babies even in the room where God's presence is happening.
640
Another thing for me as a mom is I've tried to
641
always take my kids around the world to different moves of God
642
or on trips with us so they can experience the presence of God in other cultures and denominations and see God there. So yeah, he's here she had our baby's here
643
so yeah that's that's mine do you have any thoughts
644
or you want to that's great okay good we'll do rapid
645
fire um how do you guys balance like the familiar with
646
introducing new songs great yeah i think just uh being practical with your church not overwhelming them with new songs
647
and um you know probably works differently for different congregations but um
648
just yeah I don't even know what's new to you is probably not new to them
649
so we really try in our sets to only do a
650
new song like I'm talking past like year to five years
651
like a new song like one of them maybe two of
652
them per set again the goal of corporate worship is
653
that we sing together and
654
so oftentimes you know those are just the best songs to choose
655
but if you really feel a song you know to do it then that's that's great just be really mindful
656
that probably most of songs you're doing are going to be pretty new to a lot of people.
657
So, please be mindful.
658
So, my question is, how do you discern from a Holy Spirit, like, spontaneous moment versus a moment that could just be, like, an attention moment, if that makes sense?
659
You know, I think that Jesus wants you to focus more on what he's saying than being distracted on what something isn't.
660
And so, don't stress on it too much.
661
If it's good, and the message that you're feeling
662
or what you're supposed to sing is something that is good and it lines up with the word, it doesn't have to be like five minutes long.
663
It could be one phrase.
664
I've had an encounter with the Lord where someone sings, Jesus loves me spontaneously in a moment that was absolutely the song of the moment.
665
So I would say don't worry about it.
666
If you're under submission, under leadership, have an agreement that like, hey, we're gonna risk and practice and try together.
667
We're gonna experiment and try, especially with your lead pastor have a relationship with your lead pastor
668
and say hey can we work together
669
and can you talk to me about how this made you feel
670
or this is a you know you want to lead the
671
service at church as one big inclusive moment it's not just like worship
672
and preaching and so you know be talking with them and
673
and in communication but don't worry about it just go for it and
674
and focus more on what you're supposed to do than how
675
it's going to go all right now this is probably something you guys would never have to worry about
676
so after you've done the honey and the lemon
677
and the coconut water and you get out there
678
and you god's anointed you and you're ready to go
679
and then your voice cracks do you just keep going like
680
it was intentional like yeah lord i'm just feeling it you
681
just like keep singing through it how do you handle
682
that without being embarrassed you just sing through it uh
683
and just come out of the fear of man yeah you
684
know you're we're gonna to mess it up we're gonna hit some funny notes
685
and some things but just not letting the enemy harp on
686
that in your life too much I got up last night
687
and I think it was the smoke from the fires the real actual smoke in here
688
and my voice was so dry I couldn't get to the coconut water
689
and I just was like oh well
690
and I felt it like I felt scratchy I felt
691
but I just sang through it and you have to have great song guys too
692
that make it sound really really nice put
693
that extra anointed love on there that's just call it the anointing button i'm like turn it up turn
694
that up back there please the echoey stuff you do the reverb please give
695
that to me thank you just do your best don't don't stress about how it's how it is
696
or how it's just do your best and
697
if you can't hit a note
698
and your voice isn't where it's at sing around it
699
or don't sing it at all or my favorite sing it out Hi,
700
I guess my question that I've been wondering if you have any wisdom to give light to is
701
whenever you step into a church culture,
702
how do you balance like being all things to those people but also bringing the heavenly culture and stuff like that?
703
Before we answer this, I just want to stop because you are precious.
704
What's your name?
705
Erin.
706
Erin.
707
Extend your hands to Erin.
708
Lord, we just bless Erin.
709
There's something special in your life, girly.
710
Lord, we just say yes and amen to what you're doing in her and through her, and I just, I ask you that you'd show yourself to her, Lord.
711
So profoundly powerful that you'd show your face, your every side, every aspect of who you are, that you would just be known to her, Lord, that she would see you and know you.
712
We just bless Erin in Jesus' name.
713
okay i don't know what your question was
714
but you're special what was our question what was the question again sorry i was just wondering like
715
if you have wisdom for like when you step into a church culture
716
and it's very set in stone like how do you be all things to those people
717
but also like bring down the heavenly yeah amazing uh longevity
718
i mean like the more you um okay hold on let me let me think i'm
719
so thankful for the holy spirit
720
and um i always have to just remember i'm there to serve to serve serve what's needed in the room
721
because some rooms are just like they just they're not used to flowing
722
that would be kind of awkward for them
723
and just knowing the room you're stepping in where did you
724
go where she is just knowing um what room you're going into even denomination and serve it.
725
Don't judge it.
726
Don't be negative about it.
727
Don't try to change it.
728
Just serve it.
729
Serve the Lord in the space that you've been entrusted to walk into and just have a humility and just, you know what I mean?
730
If you've been invited somewhere or you serve on the weekend and you have 13 minutes, maybe like what John Wilds was saying yesterday, if you were in his class,
731
just serve and be a good steward of the time the Lord's allowed you to have.
732
Keep your heart soft before the Lord and he'll show up for those people.
733
He will show up.
734
He doesn't need, he can do it in two seconds.
735
13 minutes might be a lot of time for somebody to worship because they've never, ever done it.
736
So just serve.
737
That's all I can really say.
738
And also you can begin to intercede
739
and pray into the culture of your house and ask the Lord to come and turn the ship.
740
But let me tell you something.
741
If you've ever been on a cruise ship on a big, big, big, big, big boat, which is the church, many, many church denominations are a big boat,
742
to pray into a culture like that for the Holy Spirit to shift it might take a lot of time.
743
And so don't go by what you see.
744
Go by what you know he's saying.
745
And just continue to serve,
746
intercede for your church, and just sprinkle in those little culture moments you're longing for in little doses.
747
And then watch the Lord begin to, like, help them understand, oh, I can wait in the presence of the Lord.
748
This isn't awkward.
749
You know, just teaching them, not talking down at them, but, like, just, like, teaching, coaching.
750
Anyway, yeah.
751
Great.
752
Awesome.
753
Similar to how Paul talks about decency and order, like when people are giving like gifts
754
and have you know things to share how do you guys
755
sorry hold on can you hear her can you turn her
756
up real quick sorry I can talk louder there we go
757
there we go we got um how Paul talks about like decency
758
and order in the church and Ephesians
759
when people are like there's multiple people trying to share something how do you guys handle
760
that during spontaneous worship given the fact that you guys have co-leaders
761
and on top of that you also might have musicians who've been practicing you know prophetic melodies too Like, how do you, when there's,
762
like, a space of spontaneous worship, how do you determine who's going to go?
763
Because I'm sure everybody, a lot of people have something to do.
764
But, like, how do you determine that?
765
I think, I was going to say this earlier.
766
With your team, I would so highly, highly recommend nights of worship with each other without anyone in the room.
767
And begin to trust each other.
768
And trust what's on each other's lives.
769
Trust what so different ones carry because there's different anointing and different flow things people carry.
770
So know what your guitar player is good at doing.
771
Know what different singers can carry and what they feel comfortable doing.
772
And then that way when the Holy Spirit begins to move, I trust my husband with everything.
773
And there might be two different ways we're sensing the Lord moving.
774
And I might be like, oh, I didn't see it going that way, but I trust him and I trust what he's sensing.
775
and so I just served that moment with him, but I may have felt something totally different.
776
And so sometimes I'll just intercede that in the room or if the time is right, I'll kind of like help lead it that other way.
777
So it's like a dance with your team, but you gotta know how to dance in private before you can do it in public.
778
That's it, beautiful.
779
Okay, Carrie.
780
Great, just as we wrap up here, would everyone just stand for a moment and would you guys just pray for everyone before we send them off?
781
Yeah.
782
we just love you so much we honor you you're amazing to come
783
and and to be in a room to learn
784
and glean from the the holy spirit these are some of the most marking moments of your life
785
so lord we bless we bless our friends right now lord i pray for fresh oil
786
and fresh fire on the altars of their heart lord i just thank you
787
that you're tending to every detail of their homes Lord, everything they're burning for.
788
Lord, maybe their church has what they're burning for and they're just loving it.
789
They're so excited.
790
But maybe they're here and they're longing for their home church to want more and to desire more.
791
Lord, I thank you that you're starting it in them and it'll go home and be like a wildfire in their home.
792
Lord, we just bless them with more friendship with you than anything else.
793
Friendship and communion with the Father.
794
Lord bless our friends in Jesus name Amen We love you so much Thank you guys
