It's a tiny sample of americium, which is an alpha particle generator.

Of the radioactive particles, you have alpha, beta, gamma.

Gamma's your most strong.

Beta is your medium strength.

It'll go through like paper and maybe wood, but you can block it with like aluminum foil.

Then alpha is your weakest.

You can stop it with paper.

It doesn't even permeate your skin.

Amaricium is primarily an alpha source.

It puts off some gamma radiation.

So what they do in the smoke alarm is they put a disc,

a metal disc, with a little piece of radioactive foil in the middle and that foil throws alpha particles off.

There's a little receiving pin that can read when the particles are hitting it.

When you have smoke, because alpha particles are so weak, the The particulate in the smoke blocks the particles from hitting

and it detects that there's a fire and that there's smoke going on.

And it's more reliable than a visual detector.

It's the most reliable way we still have for a smoke detector to function, at least in like a manner that can be made for cheap.
