This Meccan chapter tells the story of Abraha al-Habashi,

a Christian ruler in Yemen who led an army of men and elephants in an attempt to destroy the Kaaba in Mecca.

Mecca was a major trading hub for merchants who would sell their goods to Arab pilgrims who came from all over Arabia.

They came during the summer and winter months to perform the pilgrimage of Abraham

and also to pay tribute to the idols that were surrounding the Kaaba at the time.

Abraha was jealous of this

and decided to build a large cathedral in Sana'a to attract the Arab pilgrims away from Mecca

and become the new economic and religious center for all Arabian tribes.

A Meccan man who heard of Abraha's plan decided to go to Sana'a and vandalize the cathedral.

In response, Abraha raised an army of men and elephants to go destroy the Kaaba.

Abraha rode on the largest elephant and led his army north towards Mecca.

As he approached Mecca and was about to enter the city, Abraha's elephant suddenly knelt down and refused to continue forward.

The only direction the elephants were willing to go in was back towards Sana'a where they came from.

Allah intervened to protect the Kaaba that was built by Prophet Abraham and his son Ismail peace be upon them.

Allah sent a flock of birds that pelted Abraha's army with stones of baked clay, leaving them battered and destroyed like chewed up straw.

This miraculous event took place just a couple of months before the birth of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him,

which is why the year he was born is known as the year of the elephant.

These five verses would be revealed to Prophet Muhammad over 40 years later as a reminder

and a warning to the people of Quraysh, some of whom had witnessed the destruction of Abraha's army with their own eyes.
