I have the audio, I push play,

the students listen, we check answers,

we see how many we've gotten correct, we have done listening.

But listening is more complex than that.

listening can be challenging even in our first language even

if I could speak Vietnamese and I'm up here there are challenges that happen when we listen maybe you're tired

maybe I'm boring and it's hard to stay focused that's human understanding

can be difficult, especially if somebody speaks quickly.

If I start speaking English like this,

and I want to start talking like this,

and I'm just going to say,

then you probably are not going to be able to understand me very much.

Because if I start doing like this,

and I'm just wondering if you did,

I'm still speaking English, you're already the teacher,

so you'll be able to understand me.

But if I do this all the time,

then you're probably going to start to the other person and say,

what did he say?

Because what if somebody speaks quickly or uses unfamiliar words or is talking about something I don't know about.

There are physical factors, environmental factors in listening.

I like this room because it's very quiet outside.

But imagine if we were next to a highway and every time I try to talk,

hear, and I'm trying to talk.

There's the outside noise that we can't cut down.

And again, those factors like hearing problems,

or you can't see my face,

or sometimes if multiple speakers are speaking,

and they interrupt each other,

and they're talking at the same time.

All of that is true of what makes listening difficult in our first language.

And now we add on a second component of listening in English.
