1
Hi, I am Vanessa from SpeakEnglishWithVanessa .com.
2
What should I say?
3
Let's talk about it.
4
Sometimes I'm surprised because my English students don't use expressions that I hear a lot around me in daily life.
5
Even some advanced English learners miss some of these expressions that we use commonly,
6
But today I want to help you learn some common English expressions for daily life.
7
Especially since the pandemic began, our interactions have been a lot different.
8
There have been more online meetings, Zoom calls,
9
these type of interactions where there might be some communication problems due to bad internet or wifi or some kind of misunderstanding.
10
So I hope that today's expressions will help you to have smoother interactions in these situations.
11
These 20 phrases fit into four categories, asking someone for information, making sure that you understand something,
12
politely interrupting a conversation, and finally, politely agreeing or disagreeing with someone.
13
Let's start with our first category.
14
When you're asking for information, yeah, you can say, what's that?
15
What's this?
16
But this is really basic and there are a lot of more common expressions that we use.
17
Do you happen to know what time the meeting is?
18
Beautiful.
19
Do you happen to know?
20
This is a little bit indirect, but it is beautiful.
21
Do you have any idea if Katie is coming to dinner tomorrow?
22
Do you have any idea?
23
This is simply asking, do you know if Katie is coming?
24
But we can use this word idea.
25
Do you have any idea if Katie's coming to dinner tomorrow?
26
I'd like to know if Katie is coming to dinner.
27
I'd like to know if...
28
This doesn't seem like a question, right?
29
There's not a question mark, but you're asking for more information without it being a direct question.
30
I'd like to know if Katie's coming tomorrow for dinner.
31
Maybe I'll have to send her a message.
32
I'd like to know if.
33
You might hear someone say, I'm wondering if those reports about the marketing plan are finished.
34
I'm wondering if those reports are finished.
35
If your boss says this, it means that he or she is trying to be indirect and asking, are they finished yet?
36
But instead of directly asking that, they kind of indirectly say, I'm wondering if they are finished.
37
It doesn't seem like a question, question, but it is, and they're asking for more information to know, are the reports done?
38
So if your boss says to you, hey, I'm wondering if those reports will be done by three o 'clock,
39
you can say, yes, they will be done by three o 'clock or maybe, nope, they won't.
40
All right, let's go to our next category.
41
The second category is checking for understanding, checking to see if someone else understands you or if you understand them correctly.
42
So when someone asks you these questions, you want to make sure that you respond accurately.
43
Whether you are giving directions or telling a complex story, you want to make sure that other people can understand
44
because you don't want to get to the end of the conversation and the other person or you says, huh?
45
It's quite disheartening.
46
So I want to make sure
47
that you can use these expressions to check along the way to make sure that you are being understood.
48
Do you know what I mean?
49
Especially if you're talking about something that is annoying you or close to your heart.
50
Let's imagine that your child is having problems going to bed at night and it's really frustrating for you.
51
So you're talking with your husband about it.
52
Maybe this is similar to my life.
53
And you say, oh yeah, it's so tough.
54
Why won't he just sleep?
55
I'm so annoyed.
56
You know what I mean?
57
And here I am asking to see if he understands how I feel.
58
Did you notice that I cut off the first question word, do?
59
The full question is, do you know what I mean?
60
But we often just say, you know what I mean?
61
And you want the other person ideally to say, yes, I understand what you mean.
62
I understand how you're feeling.
63
They might say, no, you know, I really don't.
64
And then you realize, okay, I need to explain in a different way, or we're just on different pages.
65
But this is a great question to ask.
66
You know what I mean?
67
Or you can ask, are you following?
68
Maybe if you're telling some complex sets of directions about how to fill in this paperwork to get a visa
69
and you're telling your friend, oh, first you got to do this,
70
and then you got to go over here and it's quite complex and their eyes start to look like this.
71
We say their eyes glaze over, you might say, are you following?
72
It means, are you following these directions?
73
And they might say, sorry, I lost you a long time ago.
74
Or maybe their eyes are not glazing over.
75
Instead, they're saying, yes, okay, okay, all right, all right.
76
But you know that your directions are pretty complicated, so maybe they should write things down, but they're not.
77
You might ask them, got it?
78
That means, do you understand?
79
Are you following my directions?
80
Are you getting it?
81
This is another meaning of the word get, which means to understand.
82
I get you.
83
This means I understand you.
84
I understand how you're feeling.
85
And an answer to this, if someone says, got it, you might say, got it.
86
So you could just respond with the same phrase.
87
If someone's telling you something complicated at the end, they say, did you understand?
88
Or they say, got it?
89
You can say, Yep.
90
Got it.
91
Let's go back to my previous example about my son having difficulties falling asleep.
92
Well, when I'm talking to my husband about it,
93
I might say, well, we need to make some changes in his nighttime routine to help him sleep better,
94
or maybe changes in our daily routine to help him wind down and feel more tired at the end of the day.
95
I could ask him, are we on the same page? page.
96
We're not reading something, but this just means, do we have the same ideas?
97
Do you agree with me that we need to change something so that he can sleep?
98
Do you understand what I'm saying?
99
Are we on the same page?
100
This is very important for relationships.
101
You absolutely need to be on the same page as your partner for a lot of stuff,
102
but you can even use this at work if you're talking about a project that you're working on.
103
You want to make sure that everyone in the team is on the same page, understands the same thing.
104
So you might say, all right, everyone, are we on the same page?
105
Everyone understands what we're doing now.
106
Are we on the same page?
107
All right, let's do it.
108
Our next category are polite interruptions.
109
This could be in real daily life conversations where you need to interrupt someone,
110
or it could be on a Zoom call when someone's internet cuts out and you need to tell them something,
111
but you want to tell them it politely, or maybe they say something and they got some information wrong about your marketing meeting,
112
so you need to interrupt them before they continue.
113
You want to do that politely.
114
What can you say?
115
Here's some ideas.
116
You might say, excuse me, may I have a word?
117
Excuse me.
118
Great way to introduce this.
119
May I have a word?
120
This is not just one word.
121
This means, That means, can I say something?
122
Can I interrupt you and say something?
123
So you might say, excuse me, may I have a word?
124
You can use this when you knock on your boss's door and you want to tell him something, knock, knock, knock.
125
Excuse me, may I have a word?
126
Great.
127
That means you got to tell him something, usually something brief and short.
128
Do you mind if I jump in here?
129
Jump in means interrupting.
130
You're not literally jumping, but we can imagine that idea
131
that someone else is talking and And you are jumping or cutting or interrupting in the middle of what they're saying.
132
But this is very polite.
133
Do you mind if I jump in there?
134
Do you mind if I jump in here?
135
I want to say something that is important right now.
136
Do you mind if I jump in here?
137
Sorry, I didn't catch that.
138
Is it possible to repeat that last point?
139
This is especially if it's something organized where someone is giving a presentation
140
or they're trying to tell you some steps and you missed the last thing they said, you could use this whole phrase,
141
sorry, I didn't catch that.
142
It means I didn't understand that.
143
Can you repeat that last point?
144
Or you can shorten this even further and just say, I'm sorry.
145
Notice my head here.
146
It's tilting.
147
I'm sorry.
148
That means I didn't get it.
149
But this is really polite because you're
150
You're apologizing for not understanding and you can just say this, I'm sorry, and they'll be able to repeat what they said.
151
And finally, our more direct question you can say is, do you mind if I interrupt you?
152
You're still using this polite expression, do you mind if, but you're using a clear word, interrupt, if someone is speaking, speaking, speaking.
153
Do you mind if I interrupt you?
154
I want to share something that's relevant to this exact point before we move on to something else.
155
Do you mind if I interrupt you?
156
Great.
157
Our final category of common daily phrases for daily conversation are different ways to agree or disagree with someone.
158
Let's start with agreeing.
159
For one word responses, strong agreement, you can say totally, absolutely, right.
160
Great.
161
You strongly agree.
162
English is the most fun language to learn.
163
You might say totally, Absolutely, absolutely right.
164
For partly agreeing with someone, you can use these slightly longer phrases.
165
I see your point, but this means, yeah, okay, I understand where you're coming from.
166
I understand your point of view, but I disagree.
167
So if someone says, skiing is the best sport in the world, you might say, well, I see your point,
168
but I really would rather play basketball.
169
It's warm outside.
170
You can be on a team.
171
Okay.
172
You're agreeing with them.
173
That's polite, but you're also showing your point of view.
174
Or if someone again says, skiing is the best sport in the world, you might say, I'm not so sure about that.
175
Here you're just kind of partly agreeing, not 100%.
176
100%, say, well, I'm not so sure.
177
If you see this kind of indirect language, I'm not so sure.
178
You could say, I'm sure about it.
179
100%, I'm sure.
180
But here they say, I'm not so sure about that.
181
I would really rather play basketball.
182
I'm not so sure about it.
183
Very polite way of partially agreeing.
184
Our final three phrases are for disagreeing.
185
Let's imagine that you really do like basketball more than skiing.
186
You could say, that's not always true.
187
Skiing is dangerous.
188
Skiing is really cold.
189
Yeah, that's not always true.
190
Or you might say, I don't agree.
191
I don't think so.
192
This is pretty clear, but you know what?
193
Sometimes you just got to get your point across.
194
I don't agree.
195
Basketball is better.
196
I don't think so.
197
Basketball is better.
198
This is my opinion.
199
I disagree.
200
And that's just the way it is.
201
I hope that your daily English vocabulary has improved
202
