Hello, High Level listeners.
2
Today we're going to help you keep your conversations going in English so you can learn to ask more questions,

4
when you feel a little awkward and you don't really know what to say next.
5
So, like always in these small talk lessons, we've got some short, natural conversations for you today.
6
First, you're just going to listen to us go through the conversation.
7
Then we'll go back to the start and we'll slow down
8
and we'll repeat and explain the useful phrases so you can repeat and shadow along with us and improve your conversational English.
9
And if you want more fast -paced American English speaking practice with me, check out my fluent and friendly American English speaking course below,
10
where you'll learn real -life chunks and phrases just like you learn in this video
11
that you can feel more confident using in your English speaking skills.
12
Yeah, We've also got a study guide with all of our PDF transcripts and small talk conversations in a downloadable ebook.
13
You can find that in the link in the description down there as well.
14
Let's get started with the first conversation.
15
Okay, so our first conversation, we're going to be working on follow -up questions.
16
Follow -up questions.
17
Now, follow -up questions are basically where someone tells you something and you want to keep the conversation moving.
18
So you're going to ask another little question.
19
So listen to this dialogue
20
and then we're going to give you some more follow -up questions that you can practice on your own.
21
Hey, Mark, do you get up to much this weekend?
22
Yeah, actually, I went hiking on Sunday.
23
Oh, nice.
24
Where'd you go?
25
We found this little trail about an hour outside the city.
26
Oh, that sounds really cool.
27
Have you been there before?
28
No, first time.
29
It was really nice, actually.
30
OK, so did you notice that Mark gave me an answer, but it didn't really give me much to go on,
31
so I kept the conversation going by asking some extra questions.
32
These are called follow -up questions, all right?
33
So let's hear that dialogue once more and you can hear them once again.
34
Hey Mark, did you get up too much this weekend?
35
Uh, yeah, actually.
36
Went hiking on Sunday.
37
Oh, nice.
38
Where'd you go?
39
We found this little trail about an hour outside the city.
40
Oh, that sounds really cool.
41
Have you been there before?
42
No, first time.
43
It was really nice, actually.
44
So, again, yeah, Kat's questions, her follow -up questions, helped extend the conversation.
45
So yeah, if you're ever struggling to keep conversations going, we're about to share some more really good follow -up questions,
46
especially if the other person is talking about a trip they went on, a vacation or a holiday, or they did some kind of outdoor activity.
47
Let's start with the first one.
48
I'll go nice and slow, and then we'll do a natural speed.
49
This would be a really good time for you guys to shadow
50
and practice listening and then speaking at the same speed as us.
51
oh nice where'd you go oh nice where'd you go how was it how was it how was it
52
have you been there before have you been there before who'd you go with who'd you go with Oh,
53
would you go again?
54
Oh, would you go again?
55
Okay, this is the second conversation.
56
In this situation, me and Kat run into each other at a coffee shop.
57
Again, we'll go through the conversation two times and yeah, listen out for ways we keep the conversation going.
58
Hey, how's your week going?
59
Yeah, pretty good.
60
I've been busy with work, but I'm looking forward to having Friday off.
61
Oh, nice.
62
Yeah.
63
Anything planned?
64
Well, nothing too exciting, but I'm thinking about going out for lunch somewhere.
65
How about you?
66
Got any plans for the weekend?
67
I've got a few things planned, actually.
68
We're heading out of town to see my family.
69
Oh, that sounds really nice.
70
I hope you have a great time.
71
okay so did you notice
72
that i could have just said something like oh pretty good oh nothing too exciting
73
and yeah that would be perfectly acceptable especially
74
if it's a quit conversation at work or something like that
75
but we're working on speaking more right we want to talk more
76
so let's listen one more time and see
77
if you can hear how i start each sentence
78
and how mark starts a sentence so that we can fill it in with interesting activities that we've been doing.
79
Hey, how's your week going?
80
Yeah, pretty good.
81
I've been busy with work, but I'm looking forward to having Friday off.
82
Oh, nice.
83
Anything planned?
84
Oh, nothing too exciting, but I'm thinking about going out for lunch somewhere.
85
How about you?
86
Got any plans for the weekend?
87
I've got a few things planned, actually.
88
We're heading out of town to see my family.
89
Oh, that sounds nice.
90
I hope you have a really great time.
91
so we're going to give you some sentence starters kind of some chunks
92
that you can easily use and fill it in with your own activities okay
93
so let's listen to it a little bit slower at first
94
and then at the natural speed yeah pretty good I've been busy with pretty good I've been busy with
95
and then you can add in your own activities so I've been busy with work I've been busy with my kids.
96
I've been busy with projects.
97
Okay?
98
So, you can add any different activity that you've been busy with.
99
Yeah.
100
A great way to keep the conversation going is to share more about yourself.
101
You don't have to wait for a question.
102
So, another way you can start sharing is say, not bad.
103
I've got a few things planned for...
104
So, the main chunk is, I've got a few things planned for after four, say a time.
105
So I've got a few things planned for this weekend.
106
I've got a few things planned for tomorrow.
107
Maybe there's a national holiday coming.
108
So yeah, I've got a few things planned for Christmas.
109
And then you can keep explaining.
110
Another one is this is kind of a response to how have you been or how are things going?
111
Good, actually.
112
I'm looking forward to it actually.
113
The word actually here is kind of like surprisingly, like even though it seems like a boring week,
114
I'm looking forward to, or I'm excited about something in the future.
115
Yeah, I'm looking forward to skiing this weekend, or I'm looking forward to a day off,
116
or I'm looking forward to taking my kids to the zoo, something like that.
117
So you can use the to and then the activity.
118
I'm looking forward to cooking with my family, going out to eat, spending the weekend with my family, something like that.
119
Nothing too exciting, but I'm thinking about...
120
Oh, I like that one.
121
So, if someone asks, well, what did you do?
122
Anything interesting?
123
Nothing too exciting.
124
That means I had a very normal, standard time.
125
I'm thinking about doing something.
126
I'm thinking about going on a trip.
127
I'm thinking about getting away for the weekend.
128
I'm thinking about visiting my family.
129
So just like Mark's sentence, I haven't decided yet, but I might do something.
130
I haven't decided yet, but I might go see my family.
131
I haven't decided it yet, but I might take off next weekend.
132
So I might do something.
133
That's a really good way to kind of talk about maybe these plans will happen, maybe not, but it is a good way to continue chatting and speaking more in your conversation.
134
All right.
135
So our last conversation is a good way to kind of show interest
136
or show your curiosity in another person and the conversation that we're having.
137
So Kat and Mark, that's me and Mark, are talking at a friend's get -together.
138
Okay, so I'll start with this one.
139
So Mark, what have you been up to lately?
140
I've actually started taking Spanish classes.
141
Oh, no way.
142
How are you finding it?
143
Good.
144
It's harder than I expected though.
145
Oh yeah, I bet.
146
What made you want to learn Spanish?
147
I've always wanted to learn another language.
148
that's super interesting okay so again maybe you heard cat's reactions
149
and yeah showing interest in my new hobby is another way
150
to keep the conversation going little things like no way
151
or yeah i bet there are lots of little phrases like this in english see
152
if you can hear them one more time we'll go through the conversation again
153
so mark what have you been up to lately I've actually started taking Spanish classes.
154
Really?
155
No way.
156
How are you finding it?
157
Good.
158
It's harder than I expected, though.
159
Yeah, I bet.
160
What made you want to learn Spanish?
161
I've always wanted to learn another language.
162
Oh, that's super interesting.
163
Okay, so these are kind of short and fast, right?
164
No way.
165
Oh, no way.
166
This is a good one to say when you're a little bit surprised.
167
That's really interesting.
168
No way.
169
That's cool.
170
It's kind of a one that you use if you don't believe them.
171
Like, oh, that's...
172
I'm shocked to hear that.
173
No way.
174
So, you can use it in a friendly way or you can use it in a serious way.
175
No way.
176
I can't believe that.
177
Right?
178
So, it's just no way.
179
No way.
180
Okay.
181
So, as I said, there's lots of different phrases you can say to show interest.
182
And by showing interest to the other person, you might encourage them to keep sharing if they think you're interested,
183
maybe they'll feel more willing to open up to you and share more.
184
And then the conversation gets longer, more chances to practice your English.
185
So after Kat said, no way, another one is, oh, really?
186
Oh, really?
187
There's different ways you can say this.
188
Really?
189
When it's high at the end, sounds like a shock, a surprise, like, oh, wow, really?
190
I didn't know that.
191
But you can also say it in a, really?
192
Oh, really?
193
That's me being interested.
194
And that means I want you to go on.
195
So you can say it how you feel.
196
If you feel surprised, oh, really?
197
But if you're interested and you wanted to keep going, oh, really?
198
This is one of my favorite phrases and I use it all the time.
199
That sounds fun.
200
That sounds really nice.
201
Oh, that sounds lovely.
202
Oh, that sounds fun.
203
So it's a way to, if someone tells me something interesting, oh, that maybe I've never done that before.
204
I don't even know, but that sounds fun.
205
Like I can understand that that would be fun if I ever did it, right?
206
Oh, that sounds really fun.
207
another good one is yeah i bet oh yeah i bet this is a good one
208
if someone's talking to you and maybe they're complaining something was really difficult at work
209
or really frustrating you can sympathize and show that you're listening
210
and say yeah i bet they say oh it's learning Spanish is really difficult.
211
Yeah, I bet.
212
This can be used positively as well.
213
If someone went to a big concert and saw a famous band and they had an amazing time, say, oh yeah, I bet the crowd was crazy.
214
Oh yeah, I bet.
215
I can imagine.
216
Another one just simply saying, oh, that's interesting.
217
So we do say this word interesting.
218
Interesting.
219
Sometimes if you're very interested in what someone is saying, you can separate it out.
220
Oh, interesting.
221
Kind of like you're listening, you're thinking.
222
That's very interesting.
223
Interesting.
224
It is weird.
225
We do say it in both different ways.
226
But you can also say interesting.
227
Interesting.
228
So it's more of a tr sound.
229
Oh, that's interesting.
230
Last one.
231
How are you finding it?
232
How are you finding it?
233
Maybe you're talking to someone and they started something new, a new hobby, like learning a new language.
234
If they stop and you want to keep going, how are you finding it?
235
That means what do you think so far?
236
How has it been so far?
237
This is an easier form grammatically.
238
How are you finding it?
239
Are you enjoying it?
240
Are you liking it?
241
How are you finding it?
242
Okay, there you go.
