1
In lower grades, students learn to read.
2
In higher grades, they read to learn.
3
And somewhere along the way, reading can start to feel less like discovery and more like a task.
4
Most students see a text and immediately look for the balded words to answer question number one.
5
They scan, search, and move on as quickly as possible.
6
And honestly, can we blame them?
7
Many reading lessons follow the same pattern.
8
Read the text, answer the question, check comprehension, and move on.
9
There is nothing wrong with this approach, but if we rely on it too often,
10
reading can become repetitive and mechanical and students begin to lose interest.
11
Sometimes I feel like we treat reading like an autopsy rather than an experience.
12
So how do we turn reading into an experience?
13
Take a look at this text from one of the grade 7 lessons, the Marie Celeste.
14
I'd like you to take a moment and think about how you would teach it.
15
What activities would you use?
16
How would you engage your students beyond simple comprehension?
17
Now, let me show you a few ideas for how we can turn the same text into an experience.
18
Something closer to an adventure than a worksheet.
19
Introduce the topic, the Marie Celeste, and ask a few questions to find out what your students already know.
20
This activates prior knowledge and creates curiosity before reading even begins.
21
Questions like these help students connect to the topic and prepare their minds for the story.
22
Usually we introduce key vocabulary and ask students to copy it into their notebooks.
23
Again, there is There's nothing wrong with that.
24
But what if we ask students to discover the vocabulary instead?
25
What if we turned it into a detective story?
26
Tell your students that today they will become detectives.
27
They will investigate a mysterious case, the Marie Celeste.
28
This simple roleplay immediately increases engagement and gives students a clear purpose for reading.
29
For that purpose, I created a short video that introduces the lesson and sets the mood.
30
Hello, detectives.
31
Today we're going to investigate a mysterious case, the Marie Celeste.
32
This is not just a story, it's a mission.
33
As we read, you will collect clues, solve problems and think like real detectives.
34
Get your pens ready, keep your eyes open.
35
Every detail matters.
36
Are you ready to begin the investigation?
37
Let's go!
38
Let's read.
39
Quick tip.
40
Don't put the whole story on one slide.
41
it into smaller sections.
42
After each part, pause and ask students to make predictions.
43
What do you think happened?
44
What clues stand out?
45
What might happen next?
46
This keeps students actively involved and encourages them to think ahead instead of passively reading from beginning to end.
47
Now take a look at this slide.
48
There are two mystery words hidden in the next section of the text.
49
One means a group of people working on a ship and the other means empty with no people.
50
Student must find these words in the passage and write them in their detective log along with their guest meanings.
51
Now show the next slide.
52
Set the timer to one minute and let students search for the words.
53
After the time is up, reveal the answers.
54
A group of people working on a ship is crew and empty with no people means deserted.
55
Now do you think your students read the text carefully?
56
I seriously doubt it.
57
Most of them probably scanned the passage because they were focused on finding the correct words.
58
And that's exactly why we show them the next slide.
59
Oh wait, wait, we still need three more pieces of evidence.
60
Look for a large boat with sails,
61
a story that is hard to explain and the way the ship looks from the outside.
62
Add those to your log.
63
This time click the play button and let students listen to the pre-recorded narration while searching for the mystery words.
64
This approach gives you multiple benefits at once.
65
Students hear correct pronunciation, stay focused on the text,
66
and are less likely to miss important details.
67
One shot, multiple goals achieved.
68
And of course, don't forget to reveal the correct answers once everyone has completed the task.
69
Next comes the 60-second search mission.
70
Students have 60 seconds to find four reasons why the captain was confused.
71
This activity adds urgency, encourages quick scanning skills,
72
and gives students a clear purpose for reading.
73
Click the play button and then start the timer to begin the countdown.
74
Make sure to include translations for any difficult words.
75
This lowers frustration and keeps the focus on comprehension rather than decoding individual vocabulary items.
76
When the time is up, have a short discussion with your students.
77
What facts did they choose?
78
Did different groups notice different clues?
79
Encourage students to justify their answers before revealing the correct ones.
80
This small discussion stage helps students move beyond simply finding information and into explaining their thinking.
81
Then reveal the correct answers.
82
Next is the gap-filled challenge.
83
Some words are in the wrong places.
84
Can your students find them and fix the sentences?
85
Notice how I included these four keywords and their translations directly on the slide.
86
This may look simple, but it serves an important purpose.
87
Subconsciously, students begin noticing and processing these words before they even begin the task,
88
making the next activity feel more manageable and familiar.
89
The next slide also includes a 60-second timer.
90
Students read the sentences and correct the mistakes.
91
If you like, you can turn this into a pair work activity
92
and let students compare their answers before checking together as a class.
93
When the time is up, play the narration and reveal the correct answers.
94
Again, one activity is achieving several goals at once.
95
reading, noticing language patterns, listening practice, and peer discussion.
96
Next is the liar's summary activity.
97
Tell your students, listen carefully to the last paragraph.
98
When you finish, you'll see a summary with three factual errors.
99
Can you find them?
100
I've covered the keywords with rectangles containing translations.
101
As students listen to the narration, they must identify these missing words and write them in their notebooks.
102
This keeps listening active and purposeful rather than passive.
103
Now show them the liar summary.
104
Put Put students into groups or pairs and start the timer.
105
As they discuss, they must work together to identify the three factual mistakes.
106
When the time is up, elicit answers from the groups.
107
Which mistakes did they find?
108
Did everyone agree?
109
Only after discussion should you reveal the correct answers.
110
like this encourage students to become critical readers.
111
Instead of simply accepting information, they learn to question it,
112
verify it, and support their thinking with evidence from the text.
113
Since we're teaching higher grades,
114
we often ask students to identify or write the main idea after reading.
115
The main idea is simply what is most important in the text.
116
Essentially it's a one-sentence summary.
117
Traditionally this is often taught as a fill-in-the-gap activity where students
118
complete a sentence after discussing it with their desk mates or in groups.
119
And again there is nothing wrong with this approach.
120
However, writing the main idea can be challenging for many students,
121
especially if they're not confident writers.
122
So here are a couple of more engaging alternatives.
123
Ask students to write the main idea as a front-page newspaper headline.
124
Give them a word limit.
125
For example, the headline must be exactly 6 words long and include at least one target vocabulary word.
126
For example, mystery crew leaves deserted sailing ship.
127
This adds a creative challenge while keeping students focused and concise.
128
And because headlines naturally highlight important information,
129
Students are practicing main idea skills without always feeling like they're completing a traditional summary task.
130
Another option is the text message summary.
131
Ask students to write the main idea as if they were sailors,
132
sending a final SOS message to their families.
133
This approach encourages emotional engagement and gives students more freedom of expression.
134
Instead of simply repeating information,
135
they begin imagining the situation and responding to it from a personal perspective.
136
And sometimes that emotional connection makes the learning more memorable.
137
Now, if everything I suggested earlier feels a bit too complicated or time-consuming to prepare,
138
here's a simple, effective, and flexible post-reading strategy that works with almost any text.
139
It's called the 3-to-1 activity.
140
Students complete the following in their notebooks or logs or whatever they used to write in.
141
Three new vocabulary words they found.
142
Two useful sentence structures they liked.
143
One sentence summarizing the main idea.
144
What I like about this strategy is its simplicity.
145
It combines vocabulary, sentence patterns,
146
and summarizing into one short activity and requires very little preparation from the teacher.
147
Sometimes simple works best.
148
Final tip, be consistent, but also vary your post-reading strategies.
149
Not every reading lesson needs to become a full detective mission.
150
And not every lesson should follow the exact same routine either.
151
A little variety goes a long way.
152
And remember, you only need to prepare these materials once.
153
But a well-designed lesson can stay with you and your students for many, many years.
