Shadowing Practice: How to Speak With a British Accent - Key Features - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
This week, I was working with a new student who had one clear goal in mind.
2
She wants a convincing British accent.
3
Not because she needs it, not because somebody is telling her to, but because she loves it.
4
It complements her personality and her life here now in the UK.
5
And that's important.
6
We all have different reasons for learning an accent, right?
7
It's your choice.
8
In this lesson, we put accent reduction aside And we decided to focus on the most important components
9
that make us sound more British when we speak.
10
So today I'm going to give you a very clear plan
11
so that after this you can start sounding more British if you want to.
12
And number one isn't a sound, it's a question.
13
Why?
14
Why do you want a convincing British accent?
15
If you think it's because you need one to be accepted or you think it's something you must have, stop.
16
Trust me, work on clarity first, accent reduction, work on your confidence.
17
But if you love the British accent, if it suits your personality, or if you just think, why not, I'll just learn it, then you're in the right place.
18
I find my best students who progress the fastest are the ones who are enjoying the experience, who are doing it for fun and because they love it,
19
not because they feel like they have to.
20
Once you're clear on that, we can move on to step two, which is the first sound.
21
It's the R.
22
In standard southern British pronunciation or modern RP,
23
we don't pronounce the R if it comes at the end of a word or if it's before a consonant sound.
24
So for example, we don't say car, we say car.
25
We don't say teacher, we say teacher.
26
We don't say work, we say work.
27
So there's no strong R at the end of words and also no R's being pronounced before consonants.
28
Service, work, short, father, doctor.
29
This immediately takes away any American from your accent, if you're influenced by American, and you'll instantly start sounding more British.
30
It's a key component to the accent.
31
However, we do connect our speech with an R.
32
So, for example, if we have the word teacher and the next word is is, that next word begins with a vowel.
33
So it would become the teacher is.
34
We'll use the R to connect to the vowel.
35
However, if it's the teacher was, the teacher was.
36
We're not going to pronounce the R.
37
So remember, the R loves vowels.
38
It will always be pronounced when it comes before a vowel sound.
39
We have a few key sounds which replace the R and it's good to know them.
40
So one of them is the schwa sound, teacher.
41
We have the ER sound, like in work, this is a long vowel.
42
We have two other long vowels, course, OR and R, car.
43
We also have diphthongs, which are two vowels joining together.
44
EAR in HEAR and ER in WHERE.
45
There is one other diphthong which is UR like in PURE.
46
However, in modern RP we just replace this with an OR sound so we'd say PURE.
47
Easy.
48
Practice pronouncing these sounds and using them to replace the R.
49
Sentence!
50
The doctor was very clear.
51
The doctor was very clear.
52
Sound 2 is a sound I actually just mentioned, but it has more layers to it.
53
I'm pushing the tip of my tongue down and sliding it back slightly. And that's the sound.
54
The throat is more open, and that's what makes it sound so buttery smooth.
55
Instead of ask, ask.
56
Instead of answer, answer.
57
After, after.
58
Half, half chance chance dance dance
59
and there are more there's a specific list of words
60
and they're quite random sentence i can't answer that after class i can't answer that after class
61
this next sound is another sound that really replaces us from the americans
62
and that sound is is like in not and hot.
63
Notice how my lips are rounding slightly.
64
In American English, it's a little bit more open, more of an R, like na instead of not.
65
So think tighter and more rounded when you pronounce this sound, and nice and short.
66
Here are some very common words which can make a big difference.
67
Sentence.
68
I got a lot of work done.
69
I've always said this about this sound.
70
It screams British.
71
It's a big one, trust me.
72
We're heading over to say hi to some consonants now.
73
Now this one is very important, especially for that standard Southern RP British accent.
74
Pronounce your T's most of the time.
75
The main thing I want to say here is Americans, Australians, some other accents, they have this thing called a flap T.
76
A flap T is when you pronounce the T a little bit more like a D, so instead of saying better,
77
it might sound a bit more like better with this D sound, right?
78
Better.
79
This D, this flap, ideally this sound wouldn't happen in a modern RP accent
80
and we would try to pronounce our T's here.
81
And don't listen to those videos where people are saying, all British people say, bottle of water.
82
I always have to do that voice when I say bottle of water.
83
Yeah, give me a bottle of water, mate.
84
Trust me, that's only one kind of area of the UK.
85
Most of the time we're pronouncing our T's or doing something different.
86
Better, water, city, pretty.
87
You can hear that crispiness, the way that T gets pushed out very smoothly.
88
City, city, tt.
89
It's just a soft breath.
90
Sentence, I need to get a lot of work done.
91
I need to get a lot of work done.
92
I want to be better at writing.
93
I want to be better at writing.
94
Keep it sharp.
95
This sharpness adds structure to the accent and it makes it just sound that little bit more defined.
96
On that note, let's talk about the glottal T.
97
I just did it there. About.
98
About the glottal T.
99
This is when we cut the T out of our speech by tightening our vocal cords.
100
So instead of saying not with that clean T, I might say not.
101
Now I'm not just removing the T and saying no, I am tightening my vocal cords.
102
So at the end of that sound, I'm tightening my throat and cutting the sound away.
103
This is very, very distinctive to British accents.
104
And yes, it does happen in modern RP.
105
Not in classic old school RP, but definitely in modern RP,
106
so it's something worth considering because it does really honestly create more of a British effect.
107
But use it strategically.
108
When you're speaking fast and you have those short, boring words, I just did it then, short.
109
I didn't say short, I said short.
110
So words like not, you could say not.
111
A lot, a lot.
112
Get, get.
113
Right, right.
114
Used naturally, this sounds very British, but where people fall into a trap is when they make it sound too obvious.
115
Try not much instead of saying not much, instead of not today, not today.
116
That man could become that man.
117
Have fun and play with it, but only at the end of words ideally for now.
118
Know, go and show.
119
Oh.
120
We're moving between two sounds here.
121
Watch my mouth.
122
Oh.
123
Oh.
124
We start in the middle of the mouth and then we glide into more of a round shape at the end.
125
Oh.
126
There's a very clear movement here between the two sounds.
127
Oh.
128
Here are some very common words where this sound really matters.
129
Don't.
130
Go.
131
Home.
132
No. Open.
133
Only.
134
Over.
135
Sentence.
136
I don't know where to go.
137
I don't know where to go.
138
So just to quickly recap, if you want to sound that little bit more British and to have that effect in your speech,
139
even if it's mixed with some of your non-native accent, these are the things that will really help you get going.
140
The R.
141
Don't pronounce strong R's at the end of words or when they come before consonant sounds.
142
The long R sound in those words that are very distinctive like can't, last and fast.
143
The rounded O vowel has that very British effect, not hot pot.
144
And that glide between a, oo, o in go and no. Again, very British.
145
Make sure your T's are nice and clear.
146
But don't forget you can glottalise, and I usually recommend at the end of words.
147
Maybe not in the middle when we're saying things like bottle of water.
148
If you apply these consistently, people will notice that shift in your accent.
149
But remember, this is about 50% of the process.
150
Sounding natural isn't just about individual sounds.
151
It's about stress, rhythm, intonation, and of course some of the sounds which are very strong in your accent which you may need to reduce.
152
Which is why I always say accent reduction should be the first thing
153
that you look at before you start trying to go all crazy and sound like the queen.
154
Take these sounds, practice them slowly and apply them to words you use in your day-to-day life.
155
And if you need structured guidance on this
156
and support from a professional who's been doing this for more than 10 years now, I do private coaching, I have a course, you can check out my website, the link's in the description below.
157
Otherwise, keep practicing and I'll see you next time.
158
Again, make sure you're doing all of this for the right reason.
