Shadowing Practice: New BMW M5 Review: Why does everyone hate it? - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
Why is everybody hating on the new BMW M5?
2
Do people not like the fact that you get this M effect in the ambient lighting?
3
Look at that.
4
Oh, that's very M, isn't it?
5
But despite that, you look at anything online where people are discussing it and it's just negativity everywhere.
6
What's wrong with people?
7
I guess people just don't like change, but BMW has had to make a change to keep with the times, but at least they haven't changed the engine.
8
It's still a 4.4-litre twin-to-be V8. that didn't shut.
9
I guess people just don't like the fact that BMW has had to add one of these to the car.
10
A place when you can plug it in because it's hybrid.
11
But I'm going to find out if people are wrong to hate on this latest M5 by performance testing it,
12
weighing it and stick it on a dyno to see how much power it really makes.
13
Because BMW are known to lie about those things.
14
Anyway, I'm Matt Watson and you're watching CarWag.
15
In this video, I'm going to tell you five good things about the new BMW M5.
16
Then I'm going to tell you about five bad things about the new M5.
17
And at the very end of the video, I'm going to give you some alternatives that you might want to buy instead of it.
18
But before that, let's kick off with one obvious benefit of this new car being a hybrid.
19
So go and pop the bonnet.
20
Yes.
21
So we've got this 4.4 litre twin turbo V8.
22
It's got 585 horsepower however it's mated to an electric motor
23
and combined the total power output is 727 horsepower
24
and 1000 newton meters of torque and that drives all four wheels for an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
25
Now that's quite a lot of power isn't it but is it making more power than BMW suggest?
26
Let's put it on the dyno to find out.
27
I'm here with Mitch from Ori Performance in Swindon so So we're going to find out what the reality is.
28
Now, in my experience, BMWs usually overperform.
29
Yeah.
30
Do you find that?
31
Yeah.
32
Well, this one.
33
When I dyno-tested the old BMW M5 competition, it was supposed to have 625 horsepower, but actually produced 652 horsepower.
34
So have things got better, or have they got worse, with the new M5?
35
Here we go.
36
Whoa, look at that climb.
37
Yeah, they're some good numbers.
38
So Mitch, this graph looks pretty blooming good.
39
So what have you found?
40
She's got a lot of horsepower.
41
A lot.
42
And even more torque.
43
What we've actually got on there is what is calculated today at our engine is 774.4 horsepower.
44
Wow, so that's a considerable uplift over the claimed 727.
45
And then we come to the torque.
46
So the car's supposed to have 1,000 Nm peak torque.
47
Yeah, it's 1,000 Nm.
48
So, okay, so today it's running at 1,000 Nm.
49
And the interesting thing as well is just that torque curve, look how it just rises so sharply that it stays flat until 5,000, then tapers off.
50
It's nuts!
51
It is nuts.
52
What are these cars like to tune?
53
Because the previous generation were pretty good for tuning you can
54
get to a thousand horsepower with an engine build you have
55
to build the engine for this to get to a thousand
56
not for a thousand one of these really one of these
57
i believe literally by just doing a stage one map yeah
58
very little modification to the engine at all you know you talk in an intake
59
and exhaust and you'll be seeing one over a thousand
60
and do you reckon like bmw when they're designing this car
61
and building it they they work
62
that in they're like right we're doing a hybrid let's make
63
sure it's an absolute banger even on paper like you look
64
at the engine output it's no more than the previous generation car.
65
You're saying that actually it's another level.
66
It's also the electric side filling in as well.
67
Yeah, wow.
68
This car is supposed to do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.
69
Let's find out what the reality is.
70
I've got my specialist timing gear up here.
71
I'm going to time it to 60 miles an hour and over the quarter mile, see what it does.
72
Launch control.
73
We're ready.
74
Frickin' hell, that was mental.
75
That can go a lot quicker because of the wheel spin.
76
Let's try again.
77
That was brutal.
78
That was a bit of launch.
79
3.48, see?
80
11.37.
81
3.37, once again though I think it can go quicker.
82
This is serious, this thing is.
83
That was a good one.
84
This'll be it.
85
No. 3.52, but maybe quicker on the Quar.
86
Nope.
87
One more blast.
88
3.41.
89
I reckon I can get it a little bit quicker,
90
but I think that's some good attempts there.
91
What I like about it is it's letting me launch over and over and over again, whereas BMWs didn't used to do that.
92
That's a good one.
93
No. Come on.
94
It's getting consistent now.
95
I think we are where we are.
96
I'll tell you what, though.
97
There is something about this in the way that it just has no lag.
98
If I just put my foot down, that torque fill from the electric motor, there's no pause when you put your foot down.
99
Let me just put it into just normal drive mode, and this is where you really feel the benefit.
100
So you're just driving along, and you want to accelerate, and it's just on it straight away.
101
Look, you can see the battery power there in the blue, whereas normally there'd be a pause while the turbo spores up.
102
That just fills it in, and it's just on it straight away.
103
Blimey.
104
So while it might not be quicker so far with the quarter mile, it does feel quicker when you initially put your foot down when you're driving along.
105
It does pick up better than I remember the previous generation M5 did.
106
For a plug-in hybrid, this car sounds blooming good, you know.
107
Rev it up.
108
It's not bad, is it?
109
The second good thing about the new BMW M5 is that it has rated brakes over the standard 5 Series.
110
So at the front, you have 410mm discs gripped by six-piston calipers.
111
Then at the rear, you've got 398mm discs gripped by a single-piston caliper.
112
That's for the standard iron disc.
113
If you upgrade to the carbon ceramics, which costs about £8,000, then you get 420mm discs up front, though at the back it's still the same size as the iron discs.
114
Anyway, let's see how they perform.
115
Right, brake test from 60mph.
116
It's a heavy old car.
117
Let's try it.
118
Here we go, 3, 2, 1.
119
That's like double leg press.
120
Can we beat 35m?
121
Whoa, look at that.
122
Certainly stops well, 32m.
123
That is really, really impressive stopping power.
124
really impressive.
125
Good brakes, good brakes.
126
The third good thing about this new BMW M5 is related to the fact that it has adaptive dampers as standard.
127
This car is super relaxing.
128
If I want to go into electric only mode and it's silent.
129
Well, apart from the tyre noise and some of the noise of the vehicle is going past that it's not too loud.
130
I can go up motorway speeds in electric power for short distances.
131
You can do just over 40 miles on electric power alone but it's quite nice just cruising along like this.
132
So if I go in hybrid it will manage the systems better.
133
So you get the benefit of electric power but you've got the petrol motor so you don't have range anxiety.
134
Now this thing is only averaging 22 miles per gallon but that's because it's been ragged by a load of journalists.
135
It's letting me launch over and over and over again.
136
And really when you think about this kind of car and what it can do in the performance, 22 miles per gallon is pretty good especially
137
when it's been in the hands of people who like to drive enthusiastically
138
and will have been doing so to test the car for their reporting.
139
But it is a very nice long distance cruiser.
140
It's comfy too, surprisingly comfy.
141
I think it feels more comfortable than the previous M5 and the one before that.
142
It's like they're going more in a comfort orientated direction.
143
There's a touch of a Bentley about this car in the way that you have ballistic performance, yet quite good levels of comfort.
144
That does mean that it's slightly less M car-like though.
145
Another good thing about this, being a BMW, you can get a good discount through CarWow.
146
So you can save an average of £6,000 off a new M5 already through CarWow.
147
But you might not want to buy one yourself.
148
You see, for the first time in a long time, you might want to consider one of these as a company car.
149
Yeah, that's right.
150
You don't have to go with a boring full-on electric car.
151
You could have an M5.
152
Reason being, because it's a hybrid
153
and can go a decent amount of mileage on electric power
154
alone over 40 miles it falls into an eight percent benefiting kind tax bracket
155
that means that you will pay the taxman
156
if you're a top rate taxpayer which you'd like to be
157
if your company is willing to buy you one of these
158
things it will cost you three thousand five hundred pounds a
159
year paying to the taxman to have this car now with
160
the old m5 competition you'll be paying the taxman fifteen thousand pounds a year to drive one of those
161
if you're changing your car then you've got to check out CarWow
162
because there's nothing quite like knowing that you're getting a great price both
163
when selling your old car and finding a new one.
164
CarWow makes all the stuff that's hard work about car changing like the haggling, the no-shows and the nasty surprises.
165
A thing of the past.
166
Life-changing.
167
Now if you want to go to CarWow right now I'll put a link in the description of this video
168
and the pinned comment.
169
Alternatively you can click on the pop-out banner a ping in the top right hand corner screen now
170
or scan the qr code on screen using your mobile phone
171
to go directly there car change car wow the fifth good thing about the new bmw m5 is
172
that it certainly stands out especially
173
if you have it in the company car park you know
174
well you compare it to electric cars it's definitely distinctive and
175
when you compare it to an electric bmw 5 series even
176
the i5 50 60 70 whatever it is m it's way more aggressive
177
because you've got this big m style grille
178
which illuminates at night then you have this huge lower front bumper with huge air intakes
179
and all the intakes are real moving down the side you've
180
got 20 inch yellow wheels at the front at the back
181
they're 21s you've got fistable door mirrors you can get it with carbon fiber roof
182
and stuff like that more on
183
that later then moving to the back you've got the m5 badging there on the rear pillar
184
and this crazy diffusory thing it's not really a diffuser
185
but it's a thing going on here
186
and quad tailpipes plus the all-important m5 badge yes
187
and there's more on the inside
188
so there's the m steering wheel with the center marker there your m trickle
189
or stitching your m1 and m2 pre-configured buttons
190
so you can quickly change modes you've also got the m sport seats
191
which are very comfy and they've got a little illuminated m5 logo there
192
and you can have them in this two-tone effect if you pay a bit extra.
193
Also you've got some M things going on here in the centre console like the red stop start button,
194
your different modes there with some red accents and M on the iDrive controller.
195
You also have some M kick plates, you've got some M pedals and footrest
196
and you also get some M functionality here on the infotainment system such as an M lap timer.
197
Ooh look at that and you can get some M ambient lighting effects.
198
Then on the digital dials you have some M graphics as well.
199
All very, and I shouldn't forget this because I love this, the M tricolor here on the seatbelts.
200
You get them in the rear as well.
201
Thing is though, while there's lots of bespoke features on this car, they can't save the way it looks, can they?
202
And that brings me up to five bad things about the new M5.
203
I think the first one is that it definitely is the least good looking, or dare I say it, ugliest of all the M5s ever made.
204
Do you or disagree.
205
In fact, you know what, here's a quick recap of all the other M5s.
206
In our pinned comment, we have a system where you can vote on which you think is the best looking, and I bet this car has the least votes.
207
The second bad thing about this car is that there's actually too much choice in terms of the driving modes, and I'll show you why now.
208
First of all, we have the ability to go into the hybrid system
209
and go for dynamic plus dynamic hybrid electrical e-control hybrid operation
210
to condition the drive for maximum driving performance this includes the yeah I don't really understand
211
that but anyway you've got those modes and then you have your
212
setup where you can set the car up slightly differently
213
and then configure between those two m1 and m2 buttons
214
so this allows you to control the drivetrain so that'll be the gearbox
215
and engine response between comfort sport and sport plus the energy recovery
216
so that's like the regen braking that you get
217
when you lift off the accelerator between min mid and max
218
and then there's the drive logic I think
219
that might be the severity of the changes of the gearbox between comfort sport
220
and sport plus then the suspension between comfort sport
221
and sport plus then the steering weight between comfort
222
and sport then the brake between comfort
223
and sport then the four-wheel drive system between four-wheel drive four-wheel drive sport
224
and two-wheel drive and then there's the m sound more on
225
that in a bit between on and off
226
and i'm sure as well where's the stability control there let's
227
go into the stability control we can have stability control on stability control halfway house
228
and stability control off is there anything else oh yes there is then i can go into m mode
229
and have it set up for all driver assistance and all
230
that kind of stuff and the screen all on go into sport mode
231
which kind of gives you driver assistance to more sporty settings
232
and then track mode
233
which basically then brings up this where you can then go back to changing your DSC on off
234
or mid and it will even turn off the main display
235
when you engage M mode
236
when you go to track function not available until I've got
237
the car on I need to move it just take my word for it okay
238
that was long wasn't it sorry it's the car's fault why don't they just give you a few settings
239
that you can just choose between
240
or none no just a few will be fine the third bad thing
241
and probably the worst bad thing about the new BMW M5, and the one everyone is talking about, is the weight.
242
Because you've got a hybrid system on board with the battery and the electric motor, it weighs in at 2,435 kilograms.
243
But what's the real weight?
244
Let's get on scales to find out.
245
It's weighing in at 2,405 kilograms, but its fuel tank is only 60% full we need it 90% full
246
so we've got to add in some fuel
247
which comes to about 14 kilos of fuel to get to 90%
248
so it's a comparable number to the listed figure and
249
that means that we have this car weighing at 2,419 kilos so slightly less than claimed.
250
I thought it was going to be more still very heavy though.
251
Now the problem with weight is
252
that it affects a car's performance in a number of ways
253
in terms of acceleration it's all down to your power to weight ratio
254
so what we're going to do now is compare all the BMW M5's power to weight ratios over the years.
255
As you can see, this is the very first time
256
that an M5's power to weight ratio has got worse with a new iteration.
257
But there's another downside to added weight.
258
Got to hand it to BMW's engineers
259
because this handles way better than you imagine a two and a half tonne car would, but ultimately it's still a two and a half ton car
260
and you can sense it yes the suspension is incredible the
261
way it keeps the car flat through the bends yet isn't overly bumpy either
262
and the cost is really quickly you know that's partly down to the rear axle steering
263
and then there's a performance you know whoa it just hooks up
264
and if you have it in this semi-off traction control setting it gets sideways on you pretty quickly
265
but there's just something about it you just don't get the sensations from
266
because the weight masks the sensations coming into your body, either through your hands or through your bottom.
267
And so it all feels a little bit computer-controlled in a way.
268
Impressive, but not especially good fun.
269
Just mind-bendingly quick and very capable.
270
And it is incredible.
271
But am I getting thrills?
272
Probably not so much.
273
And I was thinking about what this car's like, and it's sort of like Muhammad Ali.
274
You know, it's a heavyweight.
275
It's got one serious punch.
276
Yeah, it's amazing how you can still dance around the ring.
277
And like Muhammad Ali, it seems to lack personality.
278
That's a bit of a shame, especially for an M car.
279
The fourth bad thing about the BMW M5 is that you're going to have to spend on some options.
280
You see, while this car may start from £112,000, the one I've got here is actually £134,000.
281
Now, £20,000 worth of options is included in something called the Ultimate Pack and that includes carbon fibre roof,
282
carbon fibre boot lip spoiler and carbon fibre mirrors.
283
The pack also includes adaptive cruise control which really should be standard on a car at this price.
284
Top speed de-restriction from 155 miles an hour to 190, pointless on the road but may be handy if you go on track.
285
There's Parking Assistant Pro
286
which in addition to the standard camera system allows the car to park itself automatically into parking spaces
287
and you can even control it remotely to drive it in and out of parking spaces with you outside the car.
288
All features that you never actually use because it takes too much time.
289
It even has a tow bar.
290
That's £1,200.
291
It's electrically operated.
292
Look, towing with your M5.
293
That's one hell of a flex.
294
The towing capacity, in case you're wondering, is two tonnes.
295
The final bad thing about the new M5 is that it just doesn't feel quite as expensive inside as the old one.
296
Here's some examples.
297
You used to have leather on the dash now you have leatherette
298
and it doesn't feel as nice
299
and it also doesn't look as expensive then there's the fact
300
that the switches just feel cheaper especially this one here the indicator it's like out the one series
301
which is worse than in a Kia then there's the gear
302
selector paddles in the M4 they're carbon fibre in this they're plastic
303
hmm so then what's my final verdict on the new bmw m5 should you avoid it consider it shortlist it
304
or just go right ahead
305
and buy it well i reckon you should consider it you see it has mega performance
306
but the added weight of the hybrid system does count against it
307
and with that in mind i've got a couple of other choices
308
that i would pick ahead of this car
309
and none of them are hybrids so an audi rs7
310
or rs6 is just more fun to drive
311
and feels pretty much as quick then there's the fact that you could go for a Porsche Panamera GTS.
312
Not quite as quick but handles better and it feels posher inside.
313
Or why not if you want to stick with BMW just get an M3 Touring
314
which from my point of view is the better car.
315
Anyway hope you'll enjoy the video if you did give it a like.
316
If you want to watch some other videos click on the video windows
317
and if you haven't done so already make sure you subscribe to this channel
318
because I'm going to be doing some more videos with the new M5 to test its performance.
319
Thanks for watching.

Why Practice Speaking with This Video?

If you’re looking to level up your english speaking practice, this car review video is a goldmine! The casual, conversational tone mimics real-life discussions—perfect for mastering natural flow. The speaker, Matt, uses dynamic language to share opinions, ask questions, and explain technical details, giving you a chance to practice shadowing speech in a relatable context. Whether you’re into cars or not, the mix of enthusiasm and analysis helps you pick up intonation, pacing, and emphasis—skills that stick when you use a shadowing app to repeat phrases. Plus, the video’s structure (5 pros, 5 cons, alternatives) teaches you how to organize thoughts clearly, a must for confident speaking.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Let’s break down 3 key structures to boost your speaking:

  • Rhetorical questions for engagement: “Why is everybody hating on the new BMW M5?” This invites listeners in—use it to start conversations or emphasize a point. Practice shadowing this to nail the curious tone.
  • Contrast with “but”: “BMW has had to make a change… but at least they haven’t changed the engine.” This balances ideas, critical for explaining pros and cons. Repeat using a shadowing technique to smooth out transitions.
  • Colloquial emphasis: “That’s quite a lot of power, isn’t it?” Tag questions like this make speech feel friendly. Mimic Matt’s casual delivery to sound more natural.

Common Pronunciation Traps

Watch out for these tricky words in the dialogue:

  • “Dyno” (short for dynamometer): Pronounced “DIE-noh,” not “DEE-noh.” Use shadowing to lock in the short “i” sound.
  • “Torque”: Rhymes with “fork,” not “torch.” The speaker stresses the first syllable—repeat until it feels natural.
  • “Ambient”: Emphasize the second syllable: “am-BEE-ent.” A shadowing app can help you match the speaker’s rhythm here.

With these tips, you’ll turn car talk into confident English skills—one shadowed phrase at a time!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
